17.8 million viewers tuned into ‘The Nicki Minaj Show’ ‘American Idol‘s season 12 launch last night, which saw Pop wonder Mariah Carey, Country star Keith Urban and Rap Queen Nicki Minaj take their places on the judging panel for the first time.

Though down 19% from last January’s Season 11 debut, last night’s show pulled in more viewers than any episode aired by NBC’s ‘The Voice’ last year, and was the most watched show on television last night, beating offerings made by any other network in the nation.
Helped in part by a Minaj led promotional campaign, which saw the Rapper take to ‘Ellen’ and ‘Jay Leno‘ for sit down interviews, FOX will no doubt be hoping tonight’s episode fares much better when it kicks off 8/7c, and following outings live up to its Season 6 high which opened with 37.4 million viewers.

Fox’s American Idol returned Wednesday night to its lowest-rated and least-watched regular-season premiere telecast ever (the first season aired during the summer and generally isn’t counted). Idol delivered 17.9 million viewers and a 6.0 adults 18-49 demo rating. That’s down 19 percent from last year’s opener, which was the previous lowest-ever record-holder.
The numbers also mean last night’s Idol premiere will not be the most-watched entertainment show this week — Tuesday’s NCIS had 22.9 million viewers. This is the first time another series was seen by more viewers than Idol during its regular season premiere week.

Agreed, first time i’ve watch since ’04 >> I think they are trying to shift the demographic away from Grandmas and it seems to be working; I work with alot of teens and it’s the first time i’ve ever heard them mention idol in casual convo. EVER.
Agree, Keith seems nice, but he doesn’t offer anything interesting. I think Randy is the dude who keeps the show moving. He was cutting comments short and got the Yes/No voting rolling; he also has no patients for horrible singers (they should stop with the shit and at least give potential talent screen time rather then some of these jokes.)

I actually watched the show for the first time in YEARS because of Mariah Carey, who is at the top of my list of faves (along with Whitney Houston of course). I actually cannot stand Nicki Minaj at ALL. However, truth be told, I feel like Nicki stole the show last night, as much as I hate to admit it. She was animated and lively, interacted well with the contestants and was genuinely entertaining to watch, while Mariah came across as cold, uncomfortable, and distant. TBH I really don’t think it was a good idea for Mariah to do this show, she’s way above the scope of this sinking ship and her personality doesn’t translate well on the format. Oh well, I still can’t stand Nicki and Mariah will always be a queen. That’s all…

It’s THE NICKI MINAJ SHOW… I really do believe if it weren’t for Nicki Minaj being on Idol the ratings would have been a disasterous mess. Mariah Carey is a legend but she’s boring. She’s not young, vibrant, fun and entertaining to watch like Nicki Minaj. The viewers tuned in to get a glimps of Nicki’s many looks and her bubbly personality. Even without the Mariah feud people would still tune in to oogle at Nicki Minaj. Some viewers might tune in just to nitpick and hate on Nicki for whatever reason, like Manly Williams (Wendy) but still they’re tuning in for Nicki Minaj and NOT Mariah. Most of you would never admit it but you all tuned in for Nicki Minaj.

Ok, it´s my first time wathing this. I just wathed it on youtube, the whole hour and a half. And I have to say I was entertained
Keith: nice and good looking. He´s there to compensate
Mariah Carey: hands down the best judge. She has such a special ear the others haven´t got. It showed in this very first episode. She wasn´t vibrant like Minaj cos she is not crazy, but she was likeable and funny enough. Loved when nobody was going to want the Indian gy to pass but she was the one who said yes, I like that, and everybody said yes after her. Didn´t see Minaj changing anybodys opinion.
Nicki Minaj: It was fun. I think the panel is so entertaining with her added to the mix. BUT… she was talking too much and even was disrespectful a couple of times. Mariah is shady but the problem is not that. You could see the problem is that from the very beggining Minaj saw everybody was there for Mariah, not her. And she couldn´t stand it in the inside, she quickly started rolling eyes everytime Mariah had a moment with a contestant (every contestant who said something about the judges lol, all of them “inspired” by Mariah)
Surprised it had less viewers. I´m sure this was more entertaining than J.Lo. lol
And Sam please, your stanning for Nicki Minaj is ridiculous. At least wheen you stan for Beyonce… I don´t know she is really a big big star

American Idol was the most watched show last night on TV, is still a Top 10 show, and is still THE biggest talent competition on TV. The new judges may have halted an even bigger decline in the ratings.

I thought Nicki was really entertaining (just like I had expected her to be). Nicki is totally being herself. No matter how bizarre the hair gets or inflated her behind is, she’s actually quite natural. There’s nothing more fascinating than that. Nicki doesn’t let the hate get to her, she’s very secure! … I also feel like everyone was feeding off her. The Nicki vs Mariah thing is so old guys, they actually seem to be playful in their shade. I think people are taking everything too seriously. I wasn’t too sure about the chemistry working before tuning in, but it seem to be a great dynamic. I’m not totally sure if I prefer this bunch over the scrumptious Jlo, but I will watch this season. American Idol ALWAYS have the best talent!!!

I’m sorry but these low ratings and views are just a sign that these karaoke shows need to finally end. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love me some Mimi but based on what happened the first night, it’s clear that this season of AI will do way worse than the last season. Hell, you would even think that with someone currently popular like Nicki on their show that they would have done way better the first time but they showed they couldn’t. Just look at what’s happening to other shows. Britney couldn’t even save the “X-factor” show. The “Duets” are practically irrelevant. The only other show that is somewhat successful is “the Voice” only because it’s new and is based on a different concept than AI and X-factor.
