Rihanna To Score Longest Running R&B #1 Single / Beat Mary J. Blige Record

Published: Saturday 12th Jan 2013 by David

Though it isn’t as publicized as it should be, Mary J.Blige remains R&B’s only consistent female ‘seller‘.

Unfortunately tarred with the same brush of perception that’s sullied her genres worth to the wider public, regular releases and well executed campaigns have ensured that her numbers remain favorable and at times miraculous even at their ‘worst’.

Her ‘worst’, being watching her latest LP ‘My Life II’ receive Gold certification after six months. A certification, many of today’s R&B releases are unlikely to ever see…ever.

However, by way of Rihanna‘s smash hit ‘Diamonds‘, Blige is on course to lose a record set in 2005 with Bryan Michael Cox penned ‘Be Without You’.

Chart details below…

Despite technically being a Pop number, Rihanna‘s ‘hue induced’ positioning as an urban act has seen ‘Diamonds’ soar on the R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart- now spending its 14th week at #1.

If it spends another week at the top next week, it will become the longest running R&B #1 of all time, snatching the record from ‘Be Without You‘ which once sat secure with a total of 15 weeks at the top.

A testament to her status as being one of the only R&B acts to break commercial records with R&B material, Mary’s currently undisputed record saw her best chart runs by even her strongest of competitors. These being  Beyonce‘s ‘Single Ladies’, Usher‘s ‘Climax’ and Ciara‘s ‘Promise‘.

However, as a result of Rihanna’s dominance over Top 40 radio, sales of ‘Diamonds’ have seen it reign supreme on Urban tallies across the globe, despite little backing from the Urban outlets that will no doubt take ‘Pour It Up’ to similar heights.

      yet …
      Rated R was R&B
      GGGB was R&B
Unappologetic was R&B with one pop song – (Right Now)
AGLM was a mixture of Reggae & R&B
      MOTS was Raggae & R&B

Rihanna’s Only Pop album was Loud!!!!

      Examining her #1’s

      Take a Bow – R&B
      Umbrella – R&B
      LTWYL – Rap/HipHOp
      LYL – Rap/Hip/Hop

Contrary to popular beliefs mid tempo doesnt make it pop or R&B if you compare

Katy Perry’s Wide Awake To Rihanna”s Diamonds its Clear as Day that wide awake is pop and Diamonds is R&B

if im not wrong that means her R&B numbers out weigh her Pop record right?

furthermore Rihanna is a versatile artist her voice transcends the barriers of Genres hence the reason it may become problematic for one to confine her or to label her music

all these people cryng about diamonds being #1 on the R&B charts

give no f**** to R&B artist and the record sales prove it!!!

Bey put out a R&B album instead of going pop and it was her worst album not saying DIL wasn’t R&B

but the point is these people do not support R&B acts so there complaining and bitching is contrived and irrelevant as f***

      • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) January 12, 2013

Uuumm no. If Katy Perry sang any of these songs, you wouldn’t dare deem them R&B. Because she’s black, you wanna call her music “R&B” which is wrong. So I disagree with you about her being R&B post MOTS.

      • Thorne January 12, 2013

Yall need to give it a phucking rest!!! Rihanna is POP… Plain as day…. She has RnB influences yes, but its POP.
FYI putting an urban/hip-hop artiste on your record DOES NOT MAKE IT URBAN OR RNB…. ITS STILL POP…..
Are you saying that all of Britney Spears’ mid-tempo or slow songs are RNB?
        Seriously?
Wide Awake and Diamonds are both POP RECORDS…..

You people need to stop forming unsubstantiated opinions. Most of the reports on music are being published by people who have studied music. Not just a fan…. or someone who listens music. Its being done by people who live, breathe and sleep music!!!

        Listen…..

      • Thorne January 12, 2013

Just for the record…. I did study Music as well…

So this is not just me babbling!

        Russian Roullette – Urban
        Wait Your Turn – Urban
        Te Amo – Urban

        YDO was urban as f***
Hate That I LOve You – Urban

Unappologetic is rihanna’s most R&B album

        from Genuines Pony Sampled Jump

To Nobodies business…. Fresh off the Runway is ratchet as f***

so again my friend LEARN MUSIC please and thanx

      • Fresh Navi January 12, 2013

Yes THORN RIhanna is a POP STAR

she is THE MOST POPULAR MUSICIAN YES!!!!

AND HER BEING NUMBER ONE ON FORBES SOCIAL MEDIA PROVES IT

irrespective of that the majority of her discorgapghy is R&B

it would be nice if you could name me 15 POP Songs From Rihanna’s Discograpghy of over 120 songs

      • F****** Hairy (Lana & Gaga schoolin’ you) January 12, 2013

        Rihanna is not RnB!
DOES THIS DUMB FANBASE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RNB AND A POP BALLAD? DAMN, IT’S NOT THAT DIFFICULT.
        We Ride = RnB
Hate That I love You = POP ballad
        Umbrella = Pop
        Te Amo = POP ballad
Having a rapper on your track doesn’t make it urban or RnB. If that’s the case then “California Gurls” would be called an urban or RnB track.
RnB = Melanie Fiona; Mary J, Elle Varner, Keyshia Cole, Brandy, Monica, etc.

    • HOTSTUFF January 12, 2013

      @FreshNavi

i don’t really agree with your list, i think it’s more like this :

      Rihanna Hard… Urban
      Rihanna Man Down – Pop/reggae
Rihanna California King Bed – Pop with Country influences
      Russian Roullette – Pop ballad
      Wait Your Turn – Urban
      Te Amo – pop
      Whats My Name – pop
      Pour it Up is Urban
      Stay – pop ballad
      Take Care – Hip Hop/rnB
Love The way you Lie – Hip Hop
      Umbrella – pop
Talk That Talk ft Jay – z – Urban
      Birthday Cake – Urban
      Cockiness – Urban
      YDO – pop
      Hate That I LOve You – RnB/pop

Shes a Pop artist with influences from Dance, Electro, Techno, reggae, rnb….
Rihanna is an extremely talented versatile superstar !

      • Fresh Navi January 12, 2013

i stoped when u said umbrella was pop…..

        i just cant *walks off*

      • HOTSTUFF January 12, 2013

Umbrella beat and lyrics = pop is written all over them and maybe some RnB influences in her vocals.

Ella ella eh eh : you can’t get more pop than this !
The beat is essentially synthesizers and drums….

      • Fresh Navi January 12, 2013

i understand babe… but alot of the songs that you label pop are not… you would never ever see billboard put umbrella #1 on the pop charts

      • SdotB January 12, 2013

@Fresh Navi…Umbrella is def POP, no if’s, and’s, or but’s…and if i’m not mistaken, Umbrella did reach #1 on the Pop Charts…that’s one of her most successful singles to date!

    • FOLLOW ME @gdboyratedloud January 12, 2013

How the f*** is Umbrella pop???? The song is categorized as a mixture of pop and r&b. Just like a lot of todays R&b so deal. the song peaked at 4 on the r&b charts.

      • Mad-On-Her January 13, 2013

Umbrella was offered to Britney first. If Britney had sung it no one would now be debating whether it was pop or not. It would be considered pop. The reason it’s being debated is because Rihanna is black and it features Jay Z.

  2. Salazar January 12, 2013

So unfair, Diamonds is not even R&B…. Sad days for R&B….

    • I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 12, 2013

True and im a RIHANNA stan!!! but it aint her fault!!

    • Ugh January 12, 2013

R&B because she’s black. this s*** has got to stop. totally unfair especially when real R&B is dying. it’s such a slap in the face.

    • JoJo (ISTAN4RIHANNA) January 13, 2013

I love Rihanna but Billboard needs to get it together with there s***** ass rules its like taylor swift when she releases an album and it goes #1 on the country chart when shes a pop artist smh

  3. COLE January 12, 2013

Oh… Who actually gives a F*** if it is R’n’B or not.

Ya’ll sit here BITCHING about “R’n’B this and R’n’B that” but yet you dont go out and help purchase R’n’B material. If mainstream R’n’B artists made CREDIBLE material, then we wouldn’t have these conversations. When HIP-HOP finally decides to remove itself from Contemporary R’n’B, then people will buy it. Until then, R’n’B will forever sit in the back wings collecting dust. Bring back RHYTHM AND BLUES!!!

Anyway, yes Rih. – You better slay with your Electronica influenced “R’n’B” song.

    SLAAAAAAAY!!! 😉

    • Chk-ahh January 12, 2013

there are no R&B mainstream artists.

There haven’t been any in over 8 years

      • COLE January 12, 2013

        Yes there is.

Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Usher, Mary J Blidge, Keyshia Cole, Monica, Brandy etc… are all MAINSTREAM R’n’B acts as they all experience MAINSTREAM success as opposed to more indie-R’n’B acts like Ledisi, Elle Varner, Lalah Hathaway etc…

What do you think MAINSTREAM means?

Commercial success ~ Mainstream success. Having a number one single doesn’t equate to mainstream success but being exposed to a large mainstream audience does.

    • tits mcgee January 12, 2013

Your comment is everything. #nuffsaid #boom

    • AmbeRussell January 12, 2013

at the same time, it is hard to buy it, if it is not being played on radio stations or anything. the radios aren’t going to play a tamia or tank song as fast as they are going to play diamonds, even on the rnb/hip hop stations. the radio djs joke about the lack of success certain artists are not having, yet they are not helping bc they are not playing their music, rather the same rnb artist, usher, beyonce cb, riri, trey and keysha, but no one else…just saying

    • 2013 is the year Beyonce’s career officially ends(yours truly zzzzb) January 12, 2013

Rihanna is on her way soon

MARY J BLIGE IS STILL THE QUEEN!!! GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!

  6. nick January 12, 2013

sad sad sad diamonds is not r&b ., music is dead just dead sad

  7. Beyonce Knowles-Carter January 12, 2013

And Sam, I’m sure you’re gonna blame Rihanna for breaking this record… Take your frustrations up with billboard

  8. chyna white January 12, 2013

i love Mary she still the queen her keyshia cole k michelle need to do a song together that will be so good my favorite album from mary was whats the 411 i really thought rih song diamond was pop it sound more pop then rnb i rarely hear it on urban radio i hear it mostly on pop radio

  9. Music Soul Harmony January 12, 2013

Diamonds is a good song. It deserved success on the hot 100 but y does it need to hog the r&b charts too considering it’s heavily pop? Well I hope this encourages r&b to step it’s game up and the listeners to support it. On another note, pour it up is garbage ugggh I hope the hype around that song dies quickly. Can’t stand it.

  10. J January 12, 2013

Im happy for Rih but id rather have an actual R&B song at #1.

  11. I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 12, 2013

YEAH QUEEN RIH!!! ANYWAYS DONT BLAME THE QUEEN BLAME BILLBOARD!! EVEN THOUGH AS A NAVY…I WILL ALWAYS BUY RIHANNAS SONGS AND ALBUMS…BUT DIAMONDS IS NOT R&B HOWEVER THERE IS ONLY ONE THING TO DO ABOUT R&B IS BUY THE ARISTS RECORDS ITS THAT SIMPLE. BUY KEISHA COLE AND BRANDY AND FANSTASIAS ALBUMS!! HOW IS IT THAT BRANDY HAD A GREAT ALBUM AND ITS STRUGGLING TO GO GOLD? BLAME YOURSELVES AS WELL!!

  12. JJFan1814 January 12, 2013

Yassss Rihanna. Make thes haters mad! Not even Adorn, Lazy Love could do this s***. LMAO! Beyonce won’t do it either!

That Rihanna reign though!!!! Breaking some kind of record with each album she releases!!!!!!!!!!

  13. COLE January 12, 2013

    And another thing:

I think true R&B as we know it, has been dead for years. It has been replaced by, a lack of imgination, weak lyrics and processed beats. For me, what is now “considered” R&B, is the industry’s way of coming up with something that USED to sound like R&B, except now, it has lables like…”Neo Soul”, which is NOT R&B (kinda like the difference bewteen, Pespi and diet Pepsi…”Close but no cigar”) The days of live instruments are few and far between and if there is a live instrument, the melodies, are dull and the lyrics wimpy.

And really, people are tired of re-iterating the SAME thing. Thrre is PLENTY og good R’n’B out there. Just GO AND LOOK FOR IT!!!

    FFS!

    • AmbeRussell January 12, 2013

that music still exist, it just is not getting the proper promo as it should. they are playing the same 7 rnb artist and same 9 rappers on the hip hop/rnb station and they took away a rnb station in nyc area, so there is just 1. and the pop stations only play 4 rnb singers n those arent even rnb songs, just the dance electric dance pop songs…
      AmbeRussell

  14. cake like lady gaga January 12, 2013

    But!!!!!!!!!!

Diamonds isn’t R&B, what fuckery is this??? These charts are becoming as mediocre as the Rihanna gimmick.

    • Monstarebel (HoneyChildPlease Mothered This H**) January 12, 2013

girl stfu you stan for the biggest gimmick in the industry…

    • Lax January 12, 2013

@Cake Just take that up with Billboard, You Loose
big mamma wearing BLOOMER Bytchs are forever
and a day Bytching. Wait and see how many different
Genre’s the New Music Will Garner when all the artist drop their Music for this year. We will see many artist under different charts that is going to be different from what it has been in the pass,,, .

      • Lax January 12, 2013

In music it’s not strange for RIHANNA’S MUSIC,,
to cover pop, r&b, hip hop, rock, reggae, etc.
There’s Hip Hop, r&b all of it is together they had a big
write up about How they was changing things. And another thing Rihanna isn’t supposed to even be good enough Artist to SEE HER NAME ON NONE OF THE LIST IF SHE IS HALF AS BAD AS THIS SITE , AND HER HATERS ALWAYS TRIES TO MAKE HER OUT TO BE,

So I wonder If GRAPE GOT THE RIGHT RIHANNA Posted up top because the RIHANNA FENTY ME AND HER NAVY KNOW THAT THEY CLAIM RIHANNA FENTY “HBIC” DON”T KNOW HOW TO POUR PUSS OUT OF A BOOTH,,,,IF YOU LET THEM TELL IT,,,,

      • Lax January 12, 2013

@GRAPE ARE YOU SURE U GOT THE RIGHT ARTIST, SINCE YOU HAVE DID A GOOD JOB OF TRYING TO PAIN RIHANNA AS A “NOBODY IN THE MUSIC GAME”,,,
Got the right person Named., It just seem to me that
Grape can write, post and throw shyt at Rihanna 24/7
and there seems to Always be some Entity That have
got RIHANNNA AND HER NAVY’S BACK, EVERY SINGLE TIME,,,

RIHANNA CAN’T HELP IT THAT HER MUSIC IS SELLING AND SINCE MANY OF YOU ARE ALWASYS SAYING RIHANNA IS A SINGLE’S ARTIST THEN,,,,,WHY DON’T
ALL OF YOU SHUT YO ASSES UO AND LET HER AINGLES SALE,,,

DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT LIST RIH IS ON JUST BE HAPPY THAT THE EX DESTINY CHILD ARTIST ARE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO SHINE FOR THE SUPER BOWL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 8 YEARS,,,

Sam Keep saying Rihanna skin is the only reason why she is considered R&B and thats a f****** lie

people who genuinely understand the genre know that most of her music is R&B and that’s why she will continue to have R&B nominations and awards at award shows

its sad that people always try to make it harder for black people to achieve!

rihanna did what any smart person would do branch out to evolve and grow so she wouldn’t had found herself in the predicament that artist such as

Keysha Cole, keri Hilson and Ciara find themselves…… the aforementioned artist were all hot R&B artist at one point but because they were not able to evolve and change with the tides the became lost and displaced

People can say nicki minaj is a sell out and what not,
but when you look at from the point of whats current and longevity
for her career songs like Starships and Superbass were needed to ensure that nicki stayed commercially viable

    • aynon January 12, 2013

I agree with you completely on all her albums the music is mainly R&B/Urban.

the only songs on Unapologetic which is pure pop is Right Now the rest all have some kind of urban grounding,

TTT really only WFL, WHYB and Drunk On Love,

even on LOUD it’s just Only Girl, Complicated and S&M

and these are considered her more pop albums when all her albums before that were pure R&B/Urban.

I Am…Sasha Fierce if anything is more pop than any of Rihanna’s albums..

If I Were A Boy, Halo, Radio, Sweet Dreams, Disappear and Satellites are all pure pop.

      • Fresh Navi January 12, 2013

        exactly!!!!

people reach the point where good music is good music

and putting it in a box is irrelevant these days

everything in life has its season

in the 90 and early 2000 it was all about R&B and soul music

i grew up hearing my parents listen to celine whitney and the other greats who sand R&B

but its new time we cant lament on the past and hope that these batch of entertainers can recreate that because it will NEVER HAPPEN

POP music and few rap songs is where it as at the moment ….. we just got to understand it

Rock songs were really hot as well in the early 2000 but rockstars have seen there commercial appeal go with the wind

    • Monstarebel (HoneyChildPlease Mothered This H**) January 12, 2013

but what people don’t realize is pop isn’t even really a genre pop is just short for POPULAR!!!

      • Fresh Navi January 12, 2013

exactly becuase Rihanna is a POP star being popular

        she cand be R&B

Because R&B is only for flops apparently?

        i’m f****** dying!

        Billboards is THE MUSIC AUTHORITY

and if they say that Diamonds Is R&B

whoooo the f*** Cares How you Haters Feel?

All i see is sings all i see is $$$$ signs – Pour it Up

      • KingBey January 12, 2013

        It’s urban but not r&b .

    • AmbeRussell January 13, 2013

but rihanna only had 2 #1 on the rnb chjart. diamonds is a pop song. just becaus eit “urban” does not make it rnb. christina aguilera has “urban” songs, but they are not rnb, britney’s in the one album urban… o and just bieber is totally rnb bc he raps and just timberlake is rnb as well.

  16. juicypussy January 12, 2013

enjoy your record mary. one week left

    • Lax January 12, 2013

I Wonder how long RIHANNA , MARY and others
are going to last after the Artist Who has STAKED HER CLAIM on all of the charts and everything else in the Entertainment Industry for the ENTIRE YEAR OF 2013
      DROPPS THEIR MUSIC, JUST SAYING,,,,
PERHAPS WE IN THE NAVY WILL ENJOY WHILE WE CAN BECAUSE ITS BY, BY CHARTS WHEN MS BEYONCE’S MUSIC DROPS,,,ROTF,,,LARAO,,,,

      • SdotB January 12, 2013

oh I thought u only stan for Rihanna and put no one else above her…surprising, but nice to see u admit that she isn’t, indeed, the Queen!

    • AmbeRussell January 13, 2013

i just find it funny how rihanna stans were saying that the rnb chart meant nothing, but now that she is #1 on it, it is a big as deal.

  17. Monstarebel (HoneyChildPlease Mothered This H**) January 12, 2013

I’ve come to realize diamonds is an modern R&B song….. the urban audience loves diamonds….Congratulations Rihanna snatch the title from MJB like it nobody’s business…

    • SdotB January 12, 2013

just because the urban audience loves diamonds, doesn’t make it an R&B song

  18. joker January 12, 2013

ohh wow. that debate again? what do i say today? ehh no. i wanna skip. but hell you know this is not about r’n’b as music. right? bb’s black and white categories. i see a gray glop. 😉

but good for her gettin’ another record broken.

    • Lax January 12, 2013

      @JOKER WELL STATED!!

  19. vanny January 12, 2013

ya’ll m************ acting like rihanna created the rules on the billboard R&B charts… get the f*** over it!! rihanna is a superstar and knows how to make good music… im not the biggest fan of rihanna but i do give credit where its due!! everytime she puts out an album she is sure to have at least a couple of hits… keep doing your thing rihanna!! much love!

AMEN!! *stands up and gives round of applause*

      • Monstarebel (HoneyChildPlease Mothered This H**) January 12, 2013

lol like how can people complain when their doing nothing to help the cause….Smh I can’t gworl,

    • RG2 January 12, 2013

I agree with you @MONSTAREBEL, the reason R&B is dying is because so called “Fans” don’t buy the music even though they claim they love their favorite R&B artist. Hell I LOVE MJB but lately her albums are not hittin Platinum like they used back in the day. Her last two albums went gold, which is not bad but Im just pointing out the fact that her albums used to sell multi-platinum/platinum and now they don’t cause R&B fans don’t support. But I Think Diamonds is a really nice song so congrats to Rih.

    • Lax January 12, 2013

The only reason they are bytching and bloowing smoke
out their Asses is because they want RIHANNA’S ass out of that top spot because their is another name that starts with a B,,,WHO THEY WANT IN RIHANNA’S SPOT,,,,LOOOOOOL,,,,

@Lax If Diamonds was a Beyoncé song, people would be calling it R&B.

Exactly, they rather support Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne.

so many haters, and then love takes over.

  22. COLE January 12, 2013

    Also…

I am in NO WAY comparing these two artists together as one is an IRREPUTABLE LEGEND and the other still has another five years to hail herself as credible (although I enjoy them both:

The R’n’B and Urban community can be SO F****** HYPOCRITICAL!!!

They’re doing the same thing to Rihanna that they.eid to Whitney Houston. In the 1980’s, Whitney had become so popular with pop audiences that they backlashed against Whitney and refused to call her a R’n’B artist. When the Whitney album came out, the R’n’B community at point refused to buy her records.

Is it Whitney’s fault that Whitney had such a versatile voice that she could fit into any genre? And not just have the usual Gospel-inflected R’n’B voice?

Rihanna is a versatile artist, her voice can fit into anything. But she is FUNDENTALLY a R’n’B artist.

    • Lax January 12, 2013

@COLE You are on it and telling the truth and I
do remember, thank goodness for the reads
we do need them its about time for some Positivity,
toward Rihanna because it’s hate that seem to always come Rihanna’s way on this site and this post is posted becaause
that grape is pissed and so or rihanna’s haters and this post is to try and make it seem that Rihanna is doing something that is not suppose to be known, when Billboard is running things just as they alway has.

  23. Brave January 12, 2013

Sad days for R&B…. It is so not fair. Nobody has to be blamed other than Billboard.
And yet, Mary J. still has the best selling R&B LP of 2012.
20 years after her debut ! Now that’s a queen.

U R DUNCE….. SALES OF A SINGLE IS NOT RECORDED BY GENRE U IGNORANT ASSHOLE

SO WHEN SOMEONE BUYS DIAMONDS OFF ITUNES… THEY ART ASKED BY APPLE

IS THIS A POP PURCHASE OR A R&B PURCHASE

ITS A F****** RIHANNA DIAMONDS PURCHASE

THE POP AIRPLAY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE R&B CHARTS

THE ONLY TIME POP AND R&B AIRPLAY CROSS PATHS IS ON THE BBHOT100!

      • Touché January 12, 2013

” U R DUNCE…..” and “THEY ART ASKED BY APPLE”? How are you going to call someone a “dunce” when you can’t even spell the words “are” or “you”correctly?

      • Vegas Girl January 12, 2013

Actually Billboard changed the rules so yes AirPlay on a top 40 station that generally plays pop does now affect the singles placement on genre charts. That’s why after they made the rule change, Diamonds went from like 60 to #1 on the RnB charts with little to no play on R&B radio stations.

      • Vegas Girl January 12, 2013

Also every station has different sized audiences, so even if Diamonds is played on some R&B stations, it won’t be as impactful on the placement of the song as much as a top 40/pop station, which usually have a much bigger market. They are weighed differently. So more spins in bigger markets vs smaller makes a huge difference.

Prior to the change a song could be played to death on an urban station and go NOWHERE on the hot 100. That hasn’t changed but now a “pop” song from a “urban” artist can dominate genre charts. I feel bad for artist more pure in the genre but that’s the way the games played.

  30. Music Soul Harmony January 12, 2013

In response to Cole- like POP music doesn’t have weak lyrics? Please. The synth and production surrounding “Diamonds” is cute but the best lyrically? Let’s not. R&b is tanking simply because no one is interested and other corny euro music is getting shoved down our throats. I’ve heard some good r&b songs by new artist who still promote well but they just don’t get that awesome buzz like Rihanna or Beyonce.

  31. KingBey January 12, 2013

Doesn’t matter if its rihanna or not, it shouldn’t be number one on this chart . Diamonds is not R&B . AT ALL . And that’s the truth whether her Stan’s like It or not .and are y’all usually saying this chart doesn’t matter ? Anyway it’s only there because of the New Rules of that chart . If this was a year ago it wouldn’t be there .
-waits for Rihanna Stans to call me pressed/ tell me to have a stadium of seats –

    • zania January 12, 2013

Is Look at me now, by Chris Brown Rap? On the billboard chart last year it top hot 100, played on Pop radios and was #1 on R & B/hip hop chart. My point is some songs are able to cross over to all genres. Look at me now was played on all station in my city.

      • King bey January 12, 2013

And I understand that . Diamonds isn’t one of those songs . Look at me now had two rappers in it , and it was most defiantly urban . Bad example .

      • mob January 13, 2013

LAMN would technically have fallen in the R&B/Hip Hop catergory without in formm of manipulation, as it represented the merging of the two genres in a way I think Billboard invisioned this catergory/chart as being. It was truly a unigue song that had a mass appeal on many charts Pop, Rap,R&B/Hip Hop, Dance etc. Diamonds is not that type of record though it is a good song.

**I’m more destrested about SCREAM by Will I Am and Britney Spears being on the R&B chart than I am Diamonds to be honest! WTF? 0_o

  34. Casual January 12, 2013

Billboard really messed up the r&b charts. It’s not even worth following now.

Note: Billboard did the same thing to the country charts.

On Billboard, only the Hot 100, Album 200, single airplay, and single download charts continue to have any real value.

    • Lax January 12, 2013

      Love Billboard’s Mess Ups.

    • mob January 13, 2013

      I WILL SAY IT AGAIN:

The beginning of the end of R&B – phase one of its destruction – occured when it was shoved in a R&B/Hip Hop caterory. WTF does Hip Hop have to do with R&B? And why is there a seperate caterogy entiteld RAP? HIP HOP & RAP have much more in common than does R&B and HIP HOP.

  35. THE LEGENDARY LAX January 12, 2013

I cannot believe this s***. I’m not even hating on Rihanna, but DIAMONDS is in no way an R&B song. I can’t even believe her fan base are proud of this. This goes to show the direction music is heading. DOWN.

    • zania January 12, 2013

Have you ever heard of songs crossing over to other genres because its so well received by everyone. Diamonds is cross over song.

      • Touché January 12, 2013

@Zania, Um no. In order for a song to have cross over appeal, it must contain elements or sounds (etc.) from each of the genres it is trying to appeal to. Now, Rihanna has previously made other cross over pop songs in the past that actually had R&B and hip hop (etc.) influences on it, so it was understandable for why it might have charted under those genres. However, this specific pop song has no other genre influences. It’s just a simple pop song( even written by a pop artist) therefore there was no reason for why it should have charted under the R&B genre.

    • Lax January 12, 2013

DIAMONDS CAN BE WHAT EVER BILLBOARD SAY IT IS.

      • zania January 12, 2013

@Touche , the reason it is charting there because I hear it on my R & B radio station. Take your argument up with the hip hop station.

      • Touché January 12, 2013

“the reason it is charting there because I hear it on my R & B radio station”? That still doesn’t make it an R&B song, nice try though. Also, why would I waste my time taking my argument up with hip hop stations when it’s not even their fault? The problem are these music companies incorrectly categorizing songs.

  39. 2013 is going to be a great year! January 12, 2013

Am I the only one hyped over this years album releases? This year, music will finally take a turn just as Timberland said it does every few years or so. And I can’t wait! This Pop “same beat with different lyrics” s*** needs a rest. The list :

I love me some Breezy but I hope he takes 2013 off and just tour the world. His fans everywhere are so anxious to see him after he teased us with the 1st leg of the Carpe Diem Tour. Unless it’s the last CD in his contract with RCA grandfathered in from JIVE Records and he is looking ot move away from RCA quickly then okay. If that’s not the case I say wait on releasing a new CD! The agenda to try and take him down is still in full effect. So, I’m gonna need Breezy to be easy and just tour the world having fun!! IDGAF, I don’t use R&B charts since the day Billboard changed the rules. I’m checking for R&B AIRPLAY instead.

I’m much smarter than convincing myself that “Diamonds” beats “Love on Top”, “Party” or even “Dance for You” at appeal for urban/Black listeners when it was barely played on their radios.

So….. Good to the f****** Bye.

  42. princess January 12, 2013

POUR IT UP is definately R&B and DIAMONDS is definately pop…. Most R&B fans dont listen to ish like DIAMONDS…. glad she went to hot 100 with it but it is not r&B…. ‘

AS long as the GRAMMYS dont classify it as R&B i’m good… they bet not

    • I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 12, 2013

And if they do b**** what are you gonna do?

      • Touché January 12, 2013

Then the Grammys will continue to lose more credibility and will eventually become a completely joke. In fact, people might even protest against it for the misrepresentation of different genres.

  43. RoyalKev January 12, 2013

I’m not trying to tear down Rihanna, but I just find this completely disgusting. The last 2 years have been a joke! The song is not an R&B track. The industry is screwed and so are the charts. Everyone is breaking records these days with .99 albums, .79 cent singles, album re-releases that contain new tracks, albums sales that include touring ticket sales (bundles), video views, etc … It’s been 2 years in this decade and it’s a complete mess. The charts are going to end up being so irrelevant by 2020!

    http://www.thepagewithroyalkev.com

    • blue January 12, 2013

this artists have to make a living somehow, it was all well in the 90s when ppl actually bought albums now this artists literally have to scrape up every last sale they can get.

  44. Together Again (Beyonce’s Weave) January 12, 2013

Do people actually care about the RnB charts nowadays?? They seem so irrelevant, like a BET award.

  45. JOHNVIDAL January 12, 2013

This means nothing. It has been thanks to the recent Billboard changes (and these changes don´t make sense at all)
That song by Mary J. would have been on top for like 30 weeks with the new rules. When Diamonds breaks this irrelevant “record” then there will be other pop songs breaking Diamonds record, cos it has changed, it´s not cos Rihanna is oh-so great or successful

    • blue January 12, 2013

actually they make complete sense just the classification of was is rnb and what isnt is a lil milky.
the chart wants to reflect the biggest rnb song out at that point in time and by the biggest, i mean in terms of airplay(not just by urban radios but all radio stations) and sales
cause lets face it an airplay only chart is a lil bias no? what about that white artist who has an rnb song out that is selling pretty well and getting plenty of pop airplay but urban stations just wont touch it?

  46. MISHKA January 12, 2013

Can Rihanna even sing a Mary J Blige song??? Lawd the nerve.

F%ck Billboard, anyway. They should go back to calling it the “Black Charts” and leave R’n’B all the way alone.

I highly suggest that no R’n’B singer – or even more, no Black singer – shows at the next Billboard Music Awards as a protest. This is going too far.

    • zania January 12, 2013

Rihanna songs are played a whole lot on the top R & B radio station. On Friday and Sat, they are alreadying running Pour it up. Love that song. Yes during the week they play Diamonds, its not just Pop station.

    • blue January 12, 2013

never gone happen they need billboard more then billboard needs them especially as billboard has all the pop acts on its side. why are people so pressed the country chart is going through the same thing. the pop chart(hot100) has been this way for years

    • Fu-gee-la January 12, 2013

      you’re right about!
if it was a RNB track #1 on Billboard Country top, white people would protest! it’s a shame that black are leaving their music genre get OWNED by white music genre!

Now reading the “byeaww byeaww” replies to my very own comment of truth, only to find this snail called “I Love Rihanna” saying I’m pressed at her fave’s singles.

FORGETTING that when my fave’s second group album was certified 8x Platinum in the US, Robyn was still in Barbados with her father on the street cleaning shoes. And also forgetting that her fave hasn’t sold worldwide what my fave sold in the states alone, even after releasing kool 1.600.000 albums per second.

Gurl I like Rihanna, don’t let me go HAM on you and HERR now, okay?

Well in the game of making ends meet in the music realm of things
there a lot of thing that might displease all of us but hey what can we do about it, nothing so let Rih’s Navy “CHEERS” BECAUSE ITS LONG AND IN BETWEEN BEFORE WE CAN GET THE CHANCE TO CELEBRATE AND ALL SINCE MANY SAY THAT Rihanna Isn’t Deserving even though her songs do amazing things like Diamonds is doing, until the next best thing,,,Diamonds is Iconic in its name first and far most then it makes Rihanna 12 Hit and they say its better by the dozen, Stay
PRESSED, AND LETRrIHANNA NAVY HAVE SOME FUN,,,,
SINCE WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY WHO WANTS THIS SMILE WIPED OFF OUR FACES,,,RIGHT HATERS,,,,

  51. Kyle January 12, 2013

As a fan of ‘true R&B’ music, this chart feat makes me really upset. “Diamonds” is not an R&B song, it’s POP! I wish Billboard would’ve kept it only based on airplay from Hip-Hop/R&B stations because I feel like airplay is based more off of longevity, rather than Itunes sales that are based more off of ‘flavor of the moment.’

  52. BEYHIVE MEMBER. January 12, 2013

So we’re gonna compare the sales of 6-7 albums to the sales of 4 solo?

And the difference is barely 1 mi copies worldwide!

KIIII Yess @FreshNavi you better expose your fave’s flop status!

6-7 albums vs. 4 albums, I’m not allowed to use any DC albums , ( even though that tea is brought to you by Billboard.com, an official charts company ) , or even any DVD sales??

I mean, what kind of fairness, Rihanna stans?!! What kind of fairness??

Again, Good to the f****** Bye.

    • I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 12, 2013

Ohhh @iloverihanna is pressed in f****** deed.

Hun, don’t believe me, just see this :
    http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/record-labels/avril-lavigne-chad-kroeger-jay-z-beyonce-1007879952.story

FROM BILLBOARD.COM, Beyonce has sold 30.1 million albums in the states alone.

They counted her solo albums WITH her group albums.

Are we gonna dispute BILLBOARD’s tea now?

And if you want my 2 cents, BILLBOARD did the right thing, because:

    BEYONCE = 96% Destiny’s Child.

Go listen to their songs and read about them and you’ll know why.

Now I am leaving this thread, chaawwww

**Blasts the most played song on urban radios in years, by the true Queen of R&B***

    “BABY you ALLL I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDdd”

  56. Julia January 12, 2013

  59. Booboo January 12, 2013

They need to stop. This is some Pop music.

  60. yagz January 12, 2013

Diamonds isnt a R&B song but its not RiRi fault. blame billboard

    • zania January 12, 2013

Than why are they playing that song on the R & B radio station if the song isn’t a cross over song. Don’t blame billboard, blame the Hip Hop stations for playing the song.

    • mob January 12, 2013

I agree! I loath and detest Billboard and the POWERS THE BE who are in control of it all!As I have stated, I like Diamonds the song & video, I think it is more of a Pop hit than a R&B one. I must add, I do think it’s kind of funny that some of her fans who constantly shunned the R&B Charts as being reflective of nothing important, are now cheering for this accomplishment! ……..I’m just saying LOL 🙂

  61. King B>Rihanna January 12, 2013

What a misrepresentation of the genre! And no I’m not hating because nothing about that song is R&B so deal.
    100% REAL.

  62. 2013 is the year Beyonce’s career officially ends(yours truly zzzzb) January 12, 2013

You haters better be thanking Rihanna for making the R&B charts relevant.

  63. Jer January 12, 2013

I wouldnt call Mary J Blige consistent in any sense of the word. She has a good album every 2 albums if that and her hits are random and far between. Not to mention her creativity and vocals are completely all over the place.

    • Brave January 12, 2013

Um shut up, Mary never realy had a bad album and she’s a very consistent artist. You clearly don’t know what’s realy good in life and music.

      • Jer January 13, 2013

Mary J Blige never had a bad album? Girlmotherfuckingbyex70000

        LAWT THE DELUSIONS!

    • Brave January 13, 2013

No delusion, just being real. STFU

  64. Mark111 January 12, 2013

Another day, another record taken from a legend by Rihanna. Madonna you’re next on the pop charts. Mariah you have a few more years before Rih have over 18 #1’s.

  65. Girrrl January 12, 2013

To all the pressed souls who are hurt about Rihanna’s record on the R&B charts so far, please set up an Itunes/Amazon/etc account and PURCHASE some “authentic” R&B songs instead of bitching about it and downloading illegally. Or just face the fact that the R in R&B stands for Rihanna. 🙂

  66. mob January 12, 2013

Okay, I like Diamonds but an R&B record holder……NO, I don’t think so. I could see Stay which is a R&B track IMO. Anywho,I havediscussed the fixed, rigged, limitedy ownd and heavly controlled music-media monopoly. It is what we have allowed it to be. Similar to the Patriot Act and the complete control of your person information by the US government. We allowed it, so it is SO…………………

  67. mob January 12, 2013

Listen, anything is possible with the POWERS THE BE in control. Hell when Ke$ha is on the cover of VIBE MAGAZINE and Indie artists Frank Ocean is considered the NEW KANG OF R&B! I mean….WTF?? 0_O

  68. BEYHIVE MEMBER. January 13, 2013

Girl good to the f****** BYE.

If you haven’t heard of it yet, DEF JAM already swallowed their own p*** and certified Rihanna a “100 NOT 185 million units plaque”, and it was reported that includes only 25 million albums.

And if you believe the numbers Def Jam released BEFORE the plaque, why not believe PEPSI saying BEYONCE has sold 100 million ALBUMS worldwide?

B**** don’t you even TRY me. Just go listen to your fav’s 66% FLOP albums and congratulate the artists with huge #ACHIEVEMENTS.

    • I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 13, 2013

YOUR SHADE CANT OUTSHINE RIHANNA AND HER REIGN F**!!

  69. Side Eye January 13, 2013

Rihanna can’t break any record when the song is not rnb.

    • I LOVE RIHANNA!!! January 13, 2013

She can and she will and you will deal!!
