Weigh In: Who Is This Generation’s Vocal Bible?

Published: Sunday 13th Jan 2013 by Rashad

Let’s face it…

The turn of the century has unfortunately been accompanied by an under-appreciation of true vocalists.  Veritably, it has been clear to see that as production technology has increased its ability, inversely, quality vocal performances have decreased.

Turn on the radio today and you will be assaulted by an abundance of autotune, so much so one may question if he/she is listening to real people or The Transformers…

*Voting closes Monday, January 14th at 11:59pm CST*

However, there are a select few who have remained faithful to vocal integrity and, in turn, have been awarded the title ‘Vocal Bible’.  The title, a pedestal of sorts, implies that a vocalist has become the standard by which others do or should follow.  Often attributed to the Whitney Houstons, Barbra Streisands, and Mariah Careys of music history, these ladies have undeniably defined an era’s singing style that few could contest.

This generation, on the other hand (presumably due to the dearth of deserving divas), has seen more debate (and loose usage) regarding such titling.  So, we leave it to you – That Grape Juice Faithful – to tell us:

Considering only artists who are under 40, who is this generation’s VB?

TIDBIT:  Is there a male singer under 40 deserving of ‘Vocal Bible’ titling for males?

    • king z January 9, 2013

the unfortunate truth is, STANS start stan wars…lol not sam. lol maybe since its a battle of VOCALS, the NAVY will exclude themselves LOL! meaning there will be less stan warring!

    • haute hottie January 9, 2013

Christina Aguilera, and Kelly Clarkson sing circles around Beyoncé and that’s coming from a Beyoncé superfan.

      • Dakizz January 9, 2013

Christina and Kelly would have to work on their pitch and control first then they’ll be better singers than Bey

      • haute hottie January 9, 2013

Even at their pitchiest they’re better vocally than Beyoncé.

      • quetta January 13, 2013

        Negative.

Ok fannie and jazmine will sing circles around bey but what about jilly from philly? jill can do things with her voice that NO ONE on that list can do!

      • truth(slayer of icki funky ass stans B****!!) January 9, 2013

OMG I FORGOT ABOUT JILLY!!! AND JILLY TOO chile!! you right!!

    • xtina_fighter January 9, 2013

Even though this is a basic poll! Christina Aguilera is the obvious winner

    • whocares January 11, 2013

Certainly not Beyonce. She can perform her ass off but almost every chick on that list can do more vocally than she can. Especially Christina.

      • Blue Ivy’s Shoulders January 11, 2013

        Yes…they all kill Beyonce vocally

    • Jasmine January 9, 2013

I picked no one because there is no Whitney or Aretha of this generation. A true vocalist is someone who effortlessly can hit amazing notes with a huge range and I have not seen that since Whitney’s good days (Bodyguard soundtrack era and before). Monica, Christina Aguilera, and Ledisi can sing but their styles are not good enough to be studied. Beyonce can carry a good tune but is no true vocalist. Alicia Keys being on the list is just a joke (ie she cannot sing). The only artist that I see that could possibly fit the question is Jill Scott but she is not on the list!!!

  2. the real xoxo January 9, 2013

Beyonce is the best of a bad bunch.
The Mariah x Whitney formula is finished – the girls who can sing like them are just that – mariah/whitney clones not original and they dont stand out.

    • ELITE NAVY S***(RIHANNA NAVY) January 9, 2013

Imma need you to listen to jhud and jazzie and fannie because they can outsing beyonce in their sleep

      • Lax January 11, 2013

Jennifer Hudson can blow all of them out of the waters, and then there’s Christiana, Fanny and the list goes on., Jennifer can make Yo Ass Laugh, Cry, and Snot Yo Noes., All at the Same Time!!

  3. JP January 9, 2013

Brandy, Jennifer Hudson, Adele or JoJo…why isn’t Monica on this list? I prefer Brandy but there is no denying Monica’s awesome vocal abilities and she makes ish look easy.

B**** … BRANDY IS QUEEN!!! END OF STORY.

    • LndoftheBlind January 11, 2013

Brandy has pretty much birthed this current music industry, those younger and older than her. Lets be all the way real.

Here’s an example: Chris Brown learned a lot of his technique including his runs from Brandy. Justin Bieber learned his style of runs from Chris who learned from Brandy.

Indi.Arie credited Brandy for inspiring so many singers from this generation including herself. She is quoted as saying “we hear so many people singing and we’re like that’s a Brandy run, that’s a Brandy run, that’s a Brandy Vocal stack.”

Who does vocal stacks like Brandy??? She invented the vocal stack many try but none come close to her.

wow that picture of beyonce next to brandy and whoever that man is it ridiculous she looks so pail compared to them.

    Leona Lewis, Beyonce

they are the only ones who I believe genuinely give people goosebumps when they sing live and hit the notes exactly as they do on they’re digital songs,

Leona’s live performances are unparalleled by anyone, she sings Whitney songs better than Whitney did. Look at her performance of IWALY on UK XF.

Beyonce’s Love On Top at the VMA’s was captivating.

Xtina had it but her recent performances have been shockingly awful.

    • king z January 9, 2013

  9. Mr. January 9, 2013

So, what, does the so-called “Vocal Bible” have to be in just the POP genre???

THIS SITE JUST DOES NOT KNOW TALENT.

All those singers are Pop singers tho???????

There are plenty of “VOCAL BIBLES” in genres other than f****** Pop music.

What about Rock, Jazz, Folk, Blues, New-Age and World music?

The last time I checked, JAZZ singer “Georgia Brown” has been called the VOICE of this generation by numerous critics!!!

Whatever, so much my ECLECTIC music tastes. And the best LIVE singer in Pop music right now would have to be Beyonce or Christina Aguilera.

    • Janessa January 9, 2013

Excuse me but Georgia Brown can’t sing. Yes, she can hit notes and has record on Guiness but that’s it. She can’t sing to save her f****** life, she’s sound like a drunk karaoke gurl trying to be mariah, on the other hand her only talent is to tell when the water is hot, yes, i called her a kettle.

    • C-rOCKA January 10, 2013

  10. Chile Please!! January 9, 2013

I’m not going to lie….I can’t really say who? All of these ladies are talented…..still not beat for Beyawnce…..she doesn’t have enought feeling & soul in her voice.

  11. Fierce P**** January 9, 2013

Beyonce is obviously a good singer but Brandy has always been my favorite. Her tone and agile runs and lower register is just beautiful and everything. Christina has power but her voice always seems forced and choked out. She puts too many runs unnecessarily. She really isn’t a skilled singer to me like ppl hype her to be but she does have talent. Whitney MC obviously had some of the best powerhouse vocals back in the day. But no one can deny Whitney’s clarity and vocal precision in her belts which is why I’ve always loved her the best. I liked MC for artistic expression in her singing but her airy head singing could be overwhelming and draining at times but boy could she finish a song with a good climax. Anyway, I go with brandy. But lots of these singers have their own expressive and special tones that make them good. I like beyonce’s voice for her technique and being able to hit notes while dancing. That’s a talent u can’t deny either.

    • HardlyBreathing January 10, 2013

  12. MOFAN95 January 9, 2013

Usher deserves the male vocal bible! Brandy is the standout alto under 40. Christina is a very good singer but she over uses her talent. As a Bey fan I love Beyonce’s voice but she isn’t the better the singer compared to others. I don’t think that next Whitney, Celine, Toni, or Mariah has really step out yet to be honest.

  15. CHUDDS January 9, 2013

Silly poll. People on this website tend to equate screaming with vocal talent. A true vocalist doesn’t need dramatics to get their points across. ALMOST everyone in the poll is unique, vocally in their own right.

Adele – Beautiful voice, but tends to get boring after a while.

Alicia Keys – She has never been an amazing vocalist to me. She strains a lot and tends to go off key. Her songwriting and artistry is what sets her apart from the crowd.

Beyonce – Say what you want about Bey, but she is one of the best vocalists of our time. Take away the wind machine, flashy outfits and dramatics and you still have an AMAZING technical singer. Perfect pitch.

Brandy – Love, love, LOVE Brandy’s voice. Her control is sick, her runs are divine, her tone is ice cold and her harmonies are f****** hypnotizing. Extremely underrated.

Christina Aguilera – I’ve never been a fan of her voice. She tries too hard for me. Next.

Fantasia – Vocal BEAST! I will admit that her screaming can be a bit much sometimes, but she KNOWS her voice. She is the one and only TRUE soul singer of this generation, and she WILL be a legend. Not to mention the sick s*** can she do with her voice. Her runs, scats, intonation, growls, improvisation….takes me to church everytime and I’m not a religious person!

Jennifer Hudson – Meh. When she’s not hitting those loud notes, she’s a pretty boring singer. No charisma, nothing interesting about her voice. She sounds like Sister Mable from the Baptist Church down the street.

Ledisi – OMG! I loooove this womans voice. She’s another singer with crazy control. Perfect pitch.

Jazmine Sullivan – WHAT??? Another jewel who’s on her way to becoming a legend. Her vocals are dope. The raspiness, the runs, the scats…..eargasms!

    Lady Gaga – Good singer.

Kelly Clarkson – Great singer. I remember her saying that she got a lot of her vocal influence from the black church, and you can tell. I loved her on American Idol.

Jojo – Another vocal beast. I love how dark & husky her voice has gotten over the years.

But we all know that Brandy was originally hailed the “vocal bible,” by people in the industry…..sooooo………

    • Abel January 9, 2013

    • Lien January 9, 2013

You not being a fan of Christina doesn’t take away from the fact that vocally, she slays every single girl you mentioned with ease. The only ones on her level are the legends: Mariah, Whitney, Celine.

    • Ri-Ho-No January 10, 2013

Brandy Is This Motherfucking Competition … She Already Won

    • BRANDY IS THE TRUTH January 11, 2013

      I AGREE ITS HONEST

CHRISTINA DOESN T NEED TO SCREAM ALL THE TIME WHEN SHE IS SOFT SHE WON.

This why BRANDY is the vocal bible. she has the control of her voice her tone is cray cray. she doesn’t have the range or the powerfull voice that B and christina has BUT she has the skill to touch directly your soul. Like BANG!!!! and its more powerfull than anything. PERIOD.

BEYONCE need to find the nuances in her voice because of her trained for me it too technical and less emotion. and i agree again B is one a the greatest singer of his generation and EVERYBODY KNOW THAT SHE WILL BE ACCLAIM THIS WAY at least.

  16. Gilberto January 9, 2013

King Beyoncé is the best. She has got the best technique. She’s the only b**** that can dance and sing at the same time.
XLtina Aguilera isn’t great. She doesn’t have a good technique and most of time she just screams and sound off key. She doesn’t have any control of her voice. If she keeps forcing her throat like she uses to, she won’t have any voice.
Alicia OffKeys? I refuse. This b**** can’t sing.

    • Abel January 9, 2013

Well, the studio voice and live voice of Bey aren’t the same…so, NO, really NO

      • Georgia January 9, 2013

  20. Oh Yeah! (Little Monster) January 9, 2013

Beyonce obviously. You dont even even have to like her to know this deep down. Her voice is not for everyone but shes versatile too, when she holds back her voice is beautiful, and when she goes full power its like wow, when she performed 1+1 at glastonbury thats when I really properly realised wow this girl can SANG the b-b-b-b-b-bbabyyyy part was my favourite bit lol!. Adele will go down as the most soulful though.

    • MUSICHEAD January 9, 2013

Beyonce is very talented but a superior vocalist she is not. While I enjoy her music (I have every album), there is nothing distinct about her voice and nothing special about her technique.

1+1 was a damn good vocal performance from her tho!

    • Lax January 11, 2013

CHRISTIN HAS MORE SOUL THEN BEYONCE!
LOOK AT HER JAMES BROW TRIBUTE AND SHE WASN’T SCREAMING SHE SANG THE HOUND DOG HELL OUT OF ITS A MAN’S WORLD.

  21. Jason January 9, 2013

I still don’t understand what you mean by “This generation”. This poll is clearly bias. Where is Charice?! Can Adele really be part of this poll when she hasn’t put out new music in over a year?

    • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

Because Adele is apart of this musical generation…duh.

      • It Should Be Illegal… January 11, 2013

Well…seeing as Adele released Skyfall for the James Bond soundtrack in October of 2012 (which, last time I checked was within the past year…) that charted within the top ten of virtually ever major chart in the world and has been nominated for an Academy Award. Regardless, she is clearly relevant and her success with 21 is unparalleled in this “generation” she is very much a part of. Thank you and goodnight.

“CHARICE PEMPENGCO” is the VOICE of this f****** generation!!!

None of the above singers could pull of a Whitney, Mariah or Celine power ballad as good as Charice.

“CHRIS CORNELL” is the MALE voice of this generation. A TRUE f****** Rock star!!!

These Pop singers aint s*** like the ones of the past!!!

    • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

UGH!! Y’all Kill Me With Beyonce!!! She is NO ONES Vocal Bible!! She was a average singer that learned to sing!! A vocal bible is someone Singing comes to naturally!! For Me LEDISI is a great example of what is expected from a vocal bible of this generation.. the things she can do with her voice is amazing!

  30. BEY January 9, 2013

THERE’S ONLY ONE VOCAL BIBLE AND THAT IS BRANDY! *CASE CLOSE*

  31. XtinaRebirth January 9, 2013

    Hmmm… there’s no Celine… Whitney…or Mariah’s…. but…

My fave: Christina is the powerhouse, unfortunately she has a bad reputation of using her voice the wrong way technically… so many great moments.

Beyonce is great as well… I can’t say she is a powerhouse, but she has great tone and control…she oversings just as much as the rest, but I enjoy her.

Brandy…what can you say? She has a great tone and knows how to use her voice.

There’s a few others on the list who I enjoy as well….but I wouldn’t say anyone is really trying to follow in their footsteps, vocally!

Many want to be like Christina… Beyonce and Brandy….

oh…and to that person who didn’t know who Tank was smh!!!

    • Lax January 11, 2013

Many might want to be like christina, Brandy But beyonce’s BHIVE don’t want nobody to be like BEYONCE Because Rihanna is Inspired by Beyonce and that seems to P*** THE BEYONCE BEY HIVE OFF,,,,,SO OTHER THEN BEYONCE THE NEW CHICKS COMING UP CAN FORGET BEING INSPIRED BY BEYONCE BECAUSE MANY OF HER FANS SEE THAT AS COPING BEYONCE AND TRYING TO BE ON HER LEVEL,,,,,

  32. XtinaRebirth January 9, 2013

  34. Olavi January 9, 2013

The Title Vocal Bible was exclusively given to Brandy after the release of her Full Moon Album as recognition for her outstanding vocals on the aforementined album why you would use vocal bible to ask who should be called that is beyond me its like asking who is the real Sasha Fierce? when we all know thats Beyonce Vocal Bible is Brandy full stop its her title after all! rather ask who is the greatest vocalist of all time?

    • Ayo January 9, 2013

Thank you, I was just about to make the same comment, I actually find this post kinna insulting. The rest of these ladies are all talented and can sing down, but Brandy was giving the name by her fans and peers why then vote on it.

    • LndoftheBlind January 11, 2013

Please tell them! There would be no “vocal bible” title had it not been for Brandy, so why Sam is taking her title and handing it out to the undeserving is beyond me. And for Christina Aguilera to have the most votes is a joke. Name an artist or writer or producer who references Aguilera as an example for vocal skill and technique…we can’t because they don’t reference her.

Brandy had an album out when Christina was still on the Mickey Mouse club, matter of fact she learned her runs from Brandy! This pole is a joke. Must be a bunch of Aguilera Stan’s mad that her album is not doing well (granted the album is amazing).

  35. Robinoost January 9, 2013

  39. IMO January 9, 2013

Adele, Beyonce, Brandy or Fantasia. Although I do believe Beyonce is the best female performer as an all rounder moreso than the ‘vocal bible’.

    • Saetana January 9, 2013

Agreed, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are great performers but I’d only call them good singers rather than great ones. However, their ability to sing live and dance takes them a notch above most other artists – in pop particularly just being a good singer is not enough. They are both technically good and that is what counts – use the voice you have well and not the one you wish you had ;o)

  40. King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

    Beyonce
And I will break it down
Beyonce is a vocalist and understands her voice probably better than any other Popstar out today. Also Christina could have been my number one but she over-sings alot and also uses the wrong technique, Beyonce over-sings alot to but at least she uses proper technique. Also her voice get better with each release and can give you live vocal showing that is perfect and on key.
However she has a mediocre tone at best………….She doesn’t have the natural great voice like a CA or even Leona Lewis and the songs that she choices to sing does not really show the real greatness that her voice is.Quite frankly the only thing B does not have with her voice is a whistle register.

    • hello January 9, 2013

she has a great upper register tbh… I’m not an expert but I think she has used the whistle register in studio..

      • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

She has used the whistle register.

    • chyna white January 9, 2013

beyonce just got better with her voice in 2008 because when she was with destiny child her voice was not that strong and didnt have that much range as she got older in got to understand her voice she got better if you look up destiny child old peformances she was not that good compare to now

    • oh baby (b****** will Deal) January 9, 2013

I stay with the industry, who already elected BRANDY as a vocal bible.

    Try hard next time, Sam.

    • oh baby (b****** will Deal) January 9, 2013

    • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) January 11, 2013

Really? Brandy? I like B and all but why do people call her the vocal bible? What are you hearing??

  42. king z January 9, 2013

To me, being the VOCAL BIBLE is being the BLUEPRINT…being that something people want to follow. yes people call brandy that, but nobody is trying to FOLLOW HER. people distinctively TRY TO SOUND LIKE whitney and barbra streisand or even patti and aretha…nobody TRIES to sound like brandy.

yes she deserves all the respect in the world because she is a vocal beast. but if u ask me, this generation has NO VB!

    • Ayo January 9, 2013

There are plently of artists who have outrightly said that they have followed her and are inspired by her, Brandy’s vocal style and what she has acheived in r&b has been very influential to a lot of ssingers and musicians.

    • GOGO January 9, 2013

ANYBODY WHO KNOWS MUSIC KNOWS THAT BRANDY HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION AND MADE AN IMPACT ON MUSICIANS!! MALE AND FEMALE!! WHEN I LISTENN TO SOME SONGS SUCH AS EVEN CHRIS BROWN I HEAR SOME BRANDY ON SOME BALLADS!!

  43. hello January 9, 2013

Beyonce’s voice is the most versatile. period. she can sing whatever she wants. Brandy’s voice is top notch, perfect controll, unique in that… but it’s like, always in the same register… I would definittly nominate her as a voice in the same league as whitney and Mariah in terms of it’s one of a kind register.

Still, Beyonce wins this. Christina lost her’s and Kelly Clarkson’s voice is not as versatile as Beyonce’s. My humble opinion, good poll tgj.

      • WWW January 11, 2013

what’s your point? search for a performance of hers on 2010 on her world tour. she sounds the same… just a different way to sing at some parts

  44. Hennesy January 9, 2013

Its all down to personal taste and what you like to hear from a singer dammit! Some people think Beyonce has no personality in her voice, others she makes cry and liberates them when she sings lol! Obviously the biggest name there is her and Adele so she probably will be the one to rep for this generation mostly but that doesnt make her better than some of the other ladies on that list.

  45. BRIEJ January 9, 2013

There Are alot of things to consider when calling someone a “Vocal Bible”

    These Qualities to me are

    Knowing your keys
being able to work with what you got(vocally)
    Live expression
singing at the drop of a hat
    compliment the lyrics melody,
also being able to ride a beat
Let Your mouth be an Instrument

With that being said the only person i know that can be considered a vocal bible is … BRANDY.

It’s not about being a Diva Or a Powerhouse vocalist It’s about knowing how to use your voice.

Not singing because you pretty or you sung in church and can yell.

  46. Fierce P**** January 9, 2013

Jason: Charice that little philippeno girl? Okay she can blow but her voice does not stand out to me so she is not the voice of a genenration. She is a karaoke singer and mimics the greats. There is nothing amazing about her tone tbh.

    • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

I was trying to figure out who the hell she was. *goes to YouTube*

  47. F****** Hairy January 9, 2013

Alicia Keys is a good artist but she definitely aint no vocalist. Im not sure why she’s on that list.
I would say Xtina but she be doin the most and now her vocal cords are strained. Adele is a wonderful singer but her range is limited.
I’d say its a tie between Beyonce and J. Hudson since these two have the most range out of everybody on that list.

  48. JOHNVIDAL January 9, 2013

There´s no this generation´s vocal bible. There´s no artist deserving of such epic title in mainstream music. Sad but true
After the 90´s there has not been such vocal epicness around. Mariah and Celine were the last ones to do it

  49. gio88 January 9, 2013

    brandy?seriously?

  50. XtinaRebirth January 9, 2013

If you want to talk about versatility…that would be Christina, hands down! That’s one singer who can sing anything she wants! Any genre any sound… As I said before unfortunately so many bad performance outshine all of the good. When she wants to sing and give a great vocal performance, she does…

  51. JOHNVIDAL January 9, 2013

If anything Adele. She is the only one among the big sellers who has relied only in her voice and own songs. That voice has conquered the world whether you like it or not. And you know it. But I still think all I said in my first comment

  52. A Voice January 9, 2013

Its going to Beyonce even though shes not my personal favourite, Brandy is. She probably has the most people that try and mimmick her/draw inspirations from her vocal style these days, you can immediatly tell when someone sounds Beyonce-ish haha. Its always ‘oh you sound like Beyonce’ or people try and ‘sing like Beyonce’. Its just one of those things.

    • pat January 9, 2013

are you serious…damn near every r and b singer in the industry copies brandy’s runs…..even justin beiber inadvertetnly because he copies chris’s runs and chris copies brandy

  53. Saetana January 9, 2013

I voted that this generation has no Vocal Bible (whatever the f*** that is supposed to mean). There are good singers out there but they don’t compare to the greats of old. Christina could have been the voice of this generation as she has a fantastic voice but she doesn’t know how to use it properly and is constantly shrieking, oversinging and straining – not surprised her voice doesn’t sound as good as it used to. Adele is a fantastic soul singer but I find her a bit samey after a while, I will say she is the best for expressing emotion but her voice doesn’t really do it for me on a personal level. Alicia Keys is another good singer, as is Kelly Clarkson, but neither of them are great singers. I’m not familiar enough with the other names on the list to comment, people keep on mentioning this Brandy but the only place I’ve ever heard her name is on this blog – assume she is American rather than international (I’m UK)?

  54. Georgia January 9, 2013

I would say Beyonce would be more this generations best female PERFORMER because she is so multi faceted. When you think of the voice or a vocal bible its people that only use their voice like Mariah and Whitney. In which Adele or Leona Lewis would fit more. But Beyonce would be this generations ultimate female performer.

  55. mc the place to be! January 9, 2013

Well duh brandy she was clearly named the vocal Bible and mariah Whitney and Celine clearly mothered everyone all the singers y’all love today just imitate these women and its been 20 years and I have yet to come across a voice that just kills like mariah Whitney Toni Celine. But just for today Adele because her music is great and her voice is just amazing atleast to me and I like Rebecca Ferguson too she reminds me of aretha and Amy whinehouse of course is another I enjoy ugh British women just kills it something is simple about them that I just love and I’m american

    • ELITE NAVY S***(RIHANNA NAVY) January 9, 2013

adele sucks and everyone on that list outsings her and has more soul

  56. NAVI January 9, 2013

Christina! her ballads are some of the best..bound to you, lost me, hurt are all great songs…she has that SOUL in her voice.

  57. COLE January 9, 2013

NONE of those vocalists are worthy of such a title. ABSOLUTELY NONE.

Those listed will NEVER compete with the like of “Sarah Vaugh, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Billir Holliday, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion” and many others… Those aforementioned SINGERS were just that. SINGERS.

What artists from this generation have relied STRICTLY on their voice and artistry and have been popular at the same time, BESIDES Adele and the ICONIC Amy Winehouse?????????????? WHO.

And the only singers who were primarily performers, but also renowned for their voices were TINA TURNER and MICHAEL JACKSON!!!

I’m gonna need another Rock superstar like Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant or rnb crooner like Luther Vandross etc… to come anf show these men how a REAL MAN SINGS! SMH!

  59. RoyalKev January 9, 2013

Oh, I hate this post with a passion! … but both my girls are in this, so I’m going to just say my piece.

    I selected both my B’s! … Why?

Brandy simply has such a masterful tone and technique. Her voice is so unique and charismatic. I also hear a vulnerability that I don’t feel as much when anyone else sings (other than maybe Janet). I don’t know why, but Brandy’s music just seems like it touches me the most (in such a personal way).

Beyonce has power , control and sheer confidence. There also a reason why people use words like perfection when describing Bey. It’s like her vocals have the classic styling of great singers in the past, but it’s an added agility and packed in passion that I feel reminds me of no other singer! I personally need a singer to be bold the way B is! I love that she has such a big voice, but it’s skilled. Bey also does it for me live (more so than any other singer, after Whitney).

So for me Brandy is who slays on my ipod and Bey slays on the stage. I need both of that in my life, so there is no clear winner.

I also don’t intermix titles Bran (is the VB) and King works perfectly fine for Bey!

Well Christina has always strained. She pushes her larynx up instead of having it neutral which causes a “try-hard” sound instead of a relaxed, free one. That’s y shes not the voice to me. Just an overrated singer. So it’s not something new. She’s been doing that for years which is why her performances have been poor year days. People that understand about vocals know what I mean.

As for Adele: okay I get the nice husky tone she has is classy and pleasing to masses. But voice of our generation? She’s good but not that good. I put her in the same vocal boat as gaga. Good singers but also can be boring sometimes…

I hate when people say that Vocalist are the only real artist because they only used their voices to gain legendary status.Do you know that with that comment you are dis-crediting my all time fav Michael Jackson,so because she did not rely on his voice alone, but use his ability to dance and entertain and his catchy music he is not a real artist. Seriously, don’t get me wrong I like vocalist and people that use their voices only but I rather and will always choose a entertainer over a voclaist.S

    • Everyone’s A Critic January 9, 2013

But what if you are entertained more by a vocalist than a dancer? If music is my choice of entertainment, it has to sound good. If you’re singing live. SOUND GOOD, if you’re not sounding good, you’re not entertaining me

      • King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

nothing is wrong don’t dis-credit enterainers though because each bring something to the table. Can you imagine a industry full with artist just like AF,MC and WH as much as I love them it would be boring.

  81. Rob January 9, 2013

This was a unique name given to Brandy by Stacey Barthe. How dare you try to take it and start a fan war. I see what you’re doing here Grape DRINK…

  82. Bran Star January 9, 2013

The title belongs to Brandy Rayana Norwood.

TGJ is really messy for this. No one else has referred to anyone other than BRANDY as a vocal bible. Close this poll it’s pointless.

  83. MRDIVABITCH January 9, 2013

Beyonce! And the lessers will have to deal with it.

  84. Bran Star January 9, 2013

A lot of you people don’t really get it.
That Grape Drink, y’all are a mess for this.
The title was specifically coined for BRANDY NORWOOD.
No one else, just the facts. People just have to do their homework.

Being a vocal bible doesn’t have anything to do with having a big, LOUD voice, or being a powerhouse…It’s not about being the best ‘entertainer’, it’s NOT about singing and dancing at the same time, it’s NOT about being a diva…

It’s about a singer who has honed their skills by practicing and perfecting their craft…It’s about a singer who knows how to use their voice effectively to its potential. It’s about exploring various nuances with their voices.

It really doesn’t MATTER who wins this “fan voted poll” for vocal bible of our generation. The fact remains that the title was originally and initially coined for recognizing BRANDY’S vocal prowess.

Like I said before. Do your homework!

  85. SLAYRIAH CAREY January 9, 2013

I’m sorry Adele is so over rated. SHe can definitely sing but she ain’t no big vocalist in my opinion.

Jennifer Hudson has a nice voice but I wouldn’t give her the title either.

Leona Lewis is AMAZING but she copies Mariah too much. ** Looks at ‘Spirit’s album cover then looks at Mariah’s debut album cover**

It’s between CHRISTINA AGUILERA and BEYONCE. Not a fan of either but IMO they have really amazing voices. I would probably give the title to Beyonce because Christina tends to over sing sometimes which can make her performances a bit unbareable.

I must say that if Beyonce and Christina were both put on stage in THEIR PRIMES, Christina would DEFINITELY slay beyonce. But I still prefer Beyonce’s voice because she doesn’t STRAIN as much as Christina. And I also think because did a much better job with with ‘at last’.

    Michelle Wiliams who?

    • RICHANDBLACK11 January 9, 2013

What you are being real for a chance

      • King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

        IKR She surprised me.

      • Royalkev January 9, 2013

I’m quite surprised by your post, but I agree (or at least see you point) with everything that you’ve stated. I think Adele is a solid vocalist, but she’s overrated. Some people are swayed by her success and might be giving her more credit than she deserves.

It’s also a fair estimation done between Bey and Christina. I’d love to have seen the old Christina join DC and Celine Dion for that stellar performance of “Emotions”. That would have been the perfect song to compare vocals between them.

        http://www.thepagewithroyalkev.com

    • Legendtina January 9, 2013

I agree. Christina at her vocal prime (which in ny opinion was the Back To Basics era) was untouchable.

  86. King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

I would not call Brandy a vocal bible because she does not have the biggest range what makes her voice so good is her tone and her runs but that is about that.
The only thing Adele really has is unique tone and emotion.
You can’t say Adele is the voice of a geneartion she does not have the years in the business to cement that position and just because her albums do great and she only uses her voice so she can’t be a vocal bible.
A vocal bible is a person that can do it all or nearly close to all.
    And that is Beyonce.
The only real artist I would say is vocal bible is MARIAH CAREY because she does it all(agility, whistle, control, power, range, technique).Yes they are things she does better than other vocally but she still has it all.The only one coming close to that vocally for this generation is Beyonce.

    • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

But the title was GIVEN to Brandy. It has nothing to do with range, performing or how long one has been in the business! People refer to Brandy as the “vocal bible,” because just like you study the bible….they study her vocal stylings…..TGJ knows this. I don’t know why they even started this poll.

      • King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

a vocal bible is someone that can do almost everything vocally and just because she was given the name does not mean she deserved it.Just like when people say Beyonce is the female MJ,she in no way deserves that title.

      • King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

How can you call someone a vocal bible and it’s not about vocals but about the name given to her.

      • CHUDDS January 9, 2013

I said it has nothing to do with range, performing or how long someone has been in the game. Who gave you that definition of a vocal bible honey? Lol. The name was given to Brandy point blank period. No one was using that term until it was coined for Brandy. Accept it and move on doll.

  87. Cookie – Rihanna – Toni Braxton January 9, 2013

My vote went to Jazmine Sullivan!

  88. Eric January 9, 2013

This post is SHADY as hell. #1. Simply because Brandy fans have been calling her the vocal bible since Full Moon. And it grew outside her fanbase and some of her peers in the industry have referred to her as that. So this post is Null and Void. Like seriously this is some b*******. I see what your trying to do and it’s not even funny. Just because someone sings with power doesn’t mean there the best singer . It takes more than power to be a vocalist.

  89. Bran Star January 9, 2013

Being a vocal bible isn’t even about having the biggest range! Y’all STILL don’t get it…

I don’t understand why people get so butthurt when Brandy’s fans call her the vocal bible!
Truth be told, that was a nickname for HER that didn’t even originate with the fans! It came from someone who actually had the honor of working with her. Like I said, and I’ll say it again: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

And just because Brandy’s the Vocal Bible that doesn’t mean that she’s better than everyone else, NOR does that take away from any other singers’ talents.

Some of you insecure butthurt stans needs to stop being so sensitive by wearing your heart on your sleeves.

  90. Xaivier January 9, 2013

Brandy is clearly the Vocal Bible! Singers knows this better than most people. They recognize what an amazing talent, Brandy is and what she has contributed to the industry as a pure vocalist. It doesn’t matter who you love or who your favorite is, its okay to tell the truth while loving your favorite. Its simple.

  93. Allyson Jackson January 9, 2013

To me Brandy is the vocal bible of our generation! Her voice is so distinct and unmatchable. No one can sing like her and I mean no one. This is coming from someone who is one a die hard FAN of Brandys and someone who loveeeessss music!!!! Along side of Brandy, Beyonce is another great singer. The title of vocal bible goes to Bramdy though.

    • MUSICHEAD January 9, 2013

The fact that Beyonce, Kelly, Fantasia, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Rihanna, India.Arie, K.Michelle and many more female artists grew up studying Brandy’s vocals is the only argument needed to declare Brandy the vocal bible.

      • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) January 11, 2013

Really?? You got proof of that?

    Brandy, The end.

  96. Casual January 9, 2013

I think of a “Vocal Bible” as someone who impacts the way other singers perform for decades to come. Think Whitney in the 80s-90s. She made an impact on female singers that still holds today – belting, precise enunciation, perfectly sustained final notes.

Beyonce is the most culturally significant artist of the past 10 years, but her singing style isn’t influential in the way Whitney’s was.

My vote is that there is no “Vocal Bible” right now.

  97. Alia January 9, 2013

    Monica>>>
    Why isn’t she on here?

    • King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

she has being using the same one note octave for her last two efforts how the hell she can be a vocal bible.

  98. Dev January 9, 2013

The comments just show that people lack musical knowledge, diversity and an array of artists. The fact that people say that Beyonce is any kinda of vocal anything after the scream/shoutfest that was love on top i have no idea. Actually, the 4 album was just a bunch of (some) decent songs that some chick with a distinctly average but controlled voice shouting over it.
People have also mentioned Leona Lewis who is technically very good but vocally void of any emotion and dull as dishwater, so as far as i’m concerned she’s lost half of the battle.
Jennifer Hudson, although she has emotion and soul, everything is the same volume, pitch and range ….
Amy, Adele although great singers/artists primarily they mimic/put on a voice to sing as apposed to having a natural singing voice, the same as Joss Stone is also a very good singer.
I’m surprised that no-one has mentioned Lauryn Hill or Lalah Hathaway, Michael Speaks (check out i specialize remix) There are so many established and underrated singers that get dont get shine due to the media saturating the market with the “usual”
Oh, people also need to read what the whistle note is, there are people on here that say their favourite artists do but but they dont.

  101. TinaMginaj January 9, 2013

This post is just a mess. Vocal Bible is Brandy‘s title. Sure alot of the ladies mentioned can sing great but having a unique tone that is unmistakable is very important. Sure Beyonce isn‘t the greatest vocalist but she is phenomenal with the voice she has. What sets her apart is her ability to keep pitch perfect vocals while dancing just as hard on stage. That is something non of the others listed could ever do.

    • Dev January 10, 2013

To be honest i dont think that Beyonce sings live at her concerts. An example, when she fell down the stairs she got up so quick and continued singing and i think this was due to a pre recorded track. No one would’ve been mad at Beyonce for taking time out to compose and catch her breath after such a spectacular fall, but she continued as if she was afraid to be found out. I’m not saying that Beyonce doesn’t scream and shout…. i’m sorry, i meant sing live, but with the dancing all the time i’m not convinced.

      • danny b January 15, 2013

Then youve never been to a real Beyonce concert then. You sitting your ass on youtube doesnt count as you witnessing her live. Ive been to every tour and she most certainly sings live. The problem with you and most people is that its so hard ofr u to believe that someone can jut be that good at what they do. Its so hard for you to believe someone can actually sound amazing despite what physical circumstance are going on, i.e. dancing, falling or what hae you. Thats why Beyonce is the Beyonce she is. She has that God-given talent which makes her apart from the rest. Michael had his God-given talent, Whitney had hers, Beyonce has hers. People act like Gpod stopped giving out out-of-this-world talents after Mariah Carey. Like he just said, “Ok Im done, thats the last one.” NO.. each generation will have that one that is able to just blow us away. Beyonce, among maybe one or two more, have that.

  102. ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 9, 2013

    None of them.

  103. Drea January 9, 2013

If this was the year 2005 or 2006 around the time Bey was finishing up her work with Destiny’s child and building her solo career, I would say Beyonce. The way she sang with such a great mixture of soul and elegance on the Destiny Fulfilled album was amazing. She had so much control in her voice and you could distinguish the dynamics in her voice. Her voice on the Destiny Fulfilled and lovin It Tour was outstanding. I love Beyonce and I love her latest album, 4, but she does oversing in her music now. She doesnt sing in a way that builds up to a climax. I love her performances and her runs. She still sings with soul but in terms of vocally, I wouldnt call her the vocal bible now. I love Brandy’s harmonies and she has so much control n her voice. There was a time when she sang too soft but now her voice is really rich and her tone is the business. Her voice has grown so much and I love to hear her voice when I watch her live performances.

    • Dev January 10, 2013

I agree in parts. I have always felt that Beyonce sang better in a group and thats why Dangerously in Love was her best album vocally as it was just after Destiny’s Child, and then the singing on Destiny Fulfilled although at times a little shouty sill better vocals than the solo stuff.

  104. S****** Blonde January 9, 2013

I keep reading Beyonce is the best, she is the one that give people goosebumps when she sing live, well, let me tell you, i never feel that way about her singing, she can sing but not every one can give you goosebumps, i’m sorry just because she’s special to you and you feel related to her songs, doesn’t mean everyone feel the same way, none of them to me is a “Vocal Bible”, what the f*** does that mean, the one and only who give me chills when i hear her voice is Whitney Houston, not because of her vocals but because her voice had nostalgia, she make me feel a sensation of joy and sadness at the same time, i don’t appreciate high notes and impressive vocal ranges cuz most vocalists focus more on its high notes and sometimes they succeed but fail to give the public emotions while singing. I have heard many so called non-singers perform a song with such feeling that the so-called vocalists can’t convey.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ January 9, 2013

“give me chills when i hear her voice is Whitney Houston, not because of her vocals but because her voice had nostalgia”

I agree, if anyone is the vocal bible, it should be Whitney or Aretha. Their voices just take you to heaven and back.

“i don’t appreciate high notes and impressive vocal ranges cuz most vocalists focus more on its high notes and sometimes they succeed but fail to give the public emotions while singing.”

      Nice Mariah shade.

    • Bran Star January 9, 2013

“The Voice” and “Vocal Bible” are not the same!
They are clearly two different titles!

Nice try, trying to make it seem like people are forcing Brandy to come for someone else’s title.

The fact remains that the title “Vocal Bible” didn’t even begin to gain popularity until it was associated with Brandy.

    • Avi January 9, 2013

Rihanna? Trick, sit. She’s a bad karaoke singer. No one on planet earth considers Rihanna any kind of vocal inspiration or blue print. Everyone sees her as what she is: a “studio singer,” who needs a dozen takes and a team of engineers to finish one song.

  107. Kate Middleton January 9, 2013

  108. Joey January 9, 2013

  109. Royalkev January 9, 2013

    @Branstar

Being a vocal bible isn’t even about having the biggest range! Y’all STILL don’t get it…

    ————————————————————————————————
^ So true, people often only factor in the range a singer has. I don’t think people that overlook Brandy’s skill notice all of her abilities. Brandy’s versatility (‘Sweet Nothing’s’) , harmonies( ‘A Capella Something’s Missing’), vocal swiftness ( ‘Thought You Said’ – Diddy FT Brandy), Edge ( ‘List’), Runs (‘Another Day in Paradise’ FT Ray J), vocal tones/texture ( ‘Hardly Breathing’) precision (‘ Locked in love’) is outstanding. She masters everything in the singers’ guide from A – Z. That’s what it’s really about if your judging!

    http://www.thepagewithroyalkev.com

  110. MUSICHEAD January 9, 2013

Why is Alicia Keys even mentioned in this conversation? Girl On Fire alone should disqualify her from any conversation involving vocal talent.

Let’s not forget her performance at Whitney’s funeral. That was so disrespectful!

  111. King B>Rihanna January 9, 2013

Oh I know that someone would say Rihanna.Really? If I had to choose for this post I would say Beyonce,Christina had great potential but her fat ego f***** it up but overall I would not choose anyone from the list,I would go with MC,WH,AF,LV(FOR A GUY)

  112. LouLou January 9, 2013

Brandy is the vocal bible. There should be no discussion. She was not given the title by a blog or fans, but she was given the title by her peers. Chris Brown, Rihanna, Tank, Jill Scott, Solange, and the list can go on and on…..God took his time crafting this woman’s voice, and if I were him I would have honestly kept that voice for myself. She’s that good!

  113. SentFromUpAbove January 9, 2013

i think younger Brandy was very similar to Whitney Vocally. no necessarily range wise but with the nuances, tone, rifts and runs. I was listening to her very first album and was wowed by how much it was inspired by Whitney vocally.

      • Touché January 9, 2013

        True!

  127. Avi January 9, 2013

I don’t even know what a “Vocal Bible” is supposed to mean. I’ve heard Brandy referred to that. Seems like she’s the only one who has been really labeled with that specific title (sort of like how MJB gets called the Queen of Hip Hop Soul.) So whatever, let her have it then. But truth be told, I have never been especially enthralled with Brandy’s singing. I find her voice raspy, choppy, mumbly, too low, and when she does go higher she strains. There’s just not a lot of clarity with her and I also don’t always hear a lot of confidence in her singing. She seemed more vocally confident on her first album, but from her second album on up she’s been hit or miss.

A better question here would be who is the biggest vocal inspiration of this “generation.”

In my opinion to be in the league of a Celine, Patti, Whitney, Aretha…you need to have a CLEAR voice…you need to have CONTROL…you need to have RANGE…you need to have a certain amount of BASS and BROADNESS…of course, you need to be able to blow the roof off the joint when need be (but also you have to be able to sing as effectively calmly too)…you need to have ORIGINALITY and DISTINCTIVENESS so that people will know YOUR voice when they hear it…and finally you need to have had enough commercial success for masses of people to hail your voice as something incredible, for it to be considered iconic and to obviously inspire others (including wannabes and copycats.)

I don’t know who the “vocal inspiration” of this generation is. There are some good singers out, but truth be told I don’t see many of today’s “generation” singers as being vocally iconic and influential. Too many of the “good” singers today IMO are too overwhelmed by their idols (Christina, Jennifer, Leona) to the point where they fail at originality because they spend their entire career trying to BE them. Then you have people who start off with “just ok” or “just slightly above average” voices, who with time may get significantly better…but still never quite ascend to the top level of absolute vocal perfection or iconicness (Beyonce).

The sad thing is that the “generation” of industry moguls and music fans don’t appreciate superior vocalists, because all they want are cheesy pop songs that they can fist pump and queen out too…and so any idiot plucked off the streets who can’t sing a lick, but can be marketed through image and manipulation (Britney, Rihanna, Katy, Kesha) wind up becoming the defining acts of the day.

    • MOnEY January 9, 2013

      GIRL #SIT!!

    • memmmmmmm January 13, 2013

What? Brandy has strained ONCE in her whole career. This is during her song “Like this” where she loses tonal quality which honestly doesn’t mean that someone’s straining; it’s one of the three indicators that that a singer MIGHT be straining, but other than that, she belts from the mask, so she can’t strain. Brandy’s vocal type is a Lyric Coloratura Contralto or as some people like to say “Low Mezzo-Soprano”. Also, Brandy’s voice is resonant throughout her resgisters. Not a single note as of 2013 is not “in check”. Brandy was slaying vocally since she was 12 and if you watch her performance of Respect on the TV show thea, you’ll probably cry yourself to sleep thinking about that run she did during the end. Have several seats.

  128. Legendtina January 9, 2013

    Legendtina of course

  129. Legendtina January 9, 2013

Demi Lovato should be considered as well. She has a good range and can belt, depending on which song she’s singing.

  131. MOnEY January 9, 2013

  132. Logan Mario January 9, 2013

Brandy. Brandy, Brandy, Brandy. She’s influenced most of the vocalists people are submitting. She’s your favorite singer’s favorite singer.

  133. kiddontplay January 9, 2013

Brandy when she was 13-14…Brandy today…and Brandy tomorrow! Brandy is the vocal instructor! You can’t give it to anybody else! Sorry!!!!!!!!!

  134. credits January 9, 2013

The Xtina stans came out full force on this post because a few hours ago Brandy was leadng and Beyonce was right behind. I don’t think thatgrapejuice was being shady with this post, because haters are always questioning “the vocal bible” title. Sam Just did this post to reassure us who brandy the vocal bible really is.

    • kiddontplay January 10, 2013

Because it damn show aint No Christina, I remember when she song Whitney song on a tribute…..Whitney told her you did good, but you can’t do it like me! If ppl think screaming and making crazy faces is the way, then they are stuck on something crazy……Brandy is the vocal bible after Whitney!

      • credits January 11, 2013

lol @ christina. Whitney wasn’t the vocal bible ever!! She was “THE VOICE” and that was the title that was given to her.

  135. Bran Star January 9, 2013

SMH, you xtina stans are by far one of the most delusional people I’ve ever witnessed. It’s just NOT enough that you all force people to recognize her as “the voice of our generation” if that’s not blasphemous enough, but y’all have to go for this title too!

I have just one question, when have you ever heard anyone associate the title or term “Vocal Bible” with Christina Aguilera? Before this horrible post? NEVER!
    I rest my case.

Like I said before, y’all can have this fan voted BS. It doesn’t matter. The Vocal Bible is Brandy and y’all will just have to find a way to DEAL with that.

    • MUSICHEAD January 9, 2013

Don’t complain just continue to vote for Brandy. Not that it matters but it would be nice if Brandy won this little poll even tho she is The Vocal Bible win or lose.

    • Legendtina January 9, 2013

The Voice of a Generation title was given to her by critics not fans darling. It is her title and YOU WILL DEAL. Brandy will never.

      • Bran Star January 9, 2013

You’re right, Brandy will never strain her voice like Christina, and that’s what makes her the vocal bible of our generation, NOT Christina.

        Be seated.

  136. Rez January 9, 2013

Brandy is the vocal Bible of our generation. If she wasn’t around, I would said Beyonce next in line. Monica? Hellllll noooo, she need vocal lesson cause she over sing and yodel too much. She doesn’t know her voice too well.

    • trollon January 14, 2013

WHO IS BRANDY???? AINT THAT A DRINK???

  137. Jace January 10, 2013

Ok so being as neutral as I can it goes

*) I love me some Brandy. True she has an incredible voice and has recorded some classic CD’s. However lately Brandy has been slacking. 2/11 was a fail with me because it lack substince and the individuality that I have seen her deliver. Her vocals are becoming too drowned puting her in the catergory with the less talented. like Kelley Rowland we know the ower is there but we can’t see it unless you show it.

*) Monica Her vocals gives me chill literally everytime I listen. However she can be a bit much some times with her runs. Still no denying this girl’s God Given Talent.

*) Bey I dont care what you say this girl has it all. A very nice voice with looks and entertainment too match. She may be a theif but you can’t say she doesn’t bring life to those songs and she hasn’t forgot her R&B roots. However her voice is very much learned sometimes lacking emotion.

*) Christina Awesome voice incredible voice….but she went off track somewhere after stripped. Now when you see her sometimes looking for her voice is like looking for her slimmer frame(Sorry True)

*) Jojo Lovely incredible voice. I don’t relly have anything negatives for jojo. She has a amazing voice.

*) Tamar had to insert her. A true Diva in every sense of the word. Incredible voice that Supercedes her sis Toni.

*)Tiffany Evans Vocalist in every sense of the word. A true force to be reckoned with. So underated. Vocals looks and has been taught some foot works from dance princess Ciara

Honarable mention: Deborah C** Tamia Melania Fiona Chrisette Michele

The Best 3 from bottom to the top

    3) Monica- vocal index a voice that is truly getting better with times. Her runs maybe over the top but are just right

    2) Beyonce The Girl has it. If you wanna study growth look at her over the years love Monica and Brandy but this girl is the vocal index you can learn from because her voice was learned.

    1) Tiffany Evans – may catch some slack but if promoted right she has got skills to take over. Barely 20. Catch her in the video below killing Beyonce Halo at age 18. Had to.

    [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKv9jeBT5DE&w=420&h=315%5D

  138. Cam January 10, 2013

Brandy is no “vocal bible.” I don’t even know where that foolishness comes from. Most of the time she sounds like a hoarse chipmunk. She may not be the worst singer, but there are many who’re MUCH better.

  139. antertain January 10, 2013

    BRANDY VOCAL BIBLE NORWOOD.

  142. AAlan January 10, 2013

honestly i love love brandy but i dont know she’s on that list
it ‘s just too obvious that BEYONCE wins she can really really sing who is just wooooooow she just keeps getting more amazing so for me the winners are monica and beyonce

  143. BrownSuga January 10, 2013

Beyonce is a super star artist and performer, prob the best female total package but she not a vocal bible.
She a hot sanger that’s true.

  144. BEY January 10, 2013

    BRANDY CASE CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!

  145. ohhey! January 10, 2013

i picked Brandy. i don’t call her the vocal bible, but i think she is the best out of them all. the girl is a vocal beast! she knows how to use her vocal well. give her any song, and she will give it what it needs. she knows how to give a song exactly what it needs. Brandy has mad skills.

  146. kiddontplay January 10, 2013

I gotta say this! Everybody knows Brandy is a great voice in the industry! If Mrs Sonya Norwood would have allowed her to sell her self for S**! She would really sell Music! But Brandy sold Millions with her cloths on. I am sure she has seen this poll and she probably laugh or cried! That’s her spirit, but truth be told Brandy is the Vocal Bible…………..All Day!

  147. Small_Angel January 10, 2013

    CHRISTINA AGUILERA
    THE VOICE OF A GENERATION
PEOPLE’S VOICE Awardee, NeedI say more?

    • MUSICHEAD January 10, 2013

Yes don’t forget the part about her label and management “donating” money for her to get that award.

Dont b saying Brandy if yall not gona support her voice and album!!

I know all of ya b****** dats voting for Brandy better have dat album point blank.

    • memmmmmmm January 13, 2013

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!! I bought her album too, the deluxe version and it was so hard to find her album. I bought one for me and one for my mom. I was too happy in that line getting them. I am NOT disappointed and I lobe her song Do you know what you have. It’s simple, vocally, but she still makes it exciting because of her harmonies and you need to have a great ear if you’re going to harmonize like that.

  150. Caribbean native January 11, 2013

ok honesty here im a navy, a total opposit to a bey stan, however i cant deny that beyonce has one of the best voices, i used to bey a stan before rih came and take overrrrr but i still deep down have alot of love for beyonce (when she”s not up against rihanna) but that being said her voice is perfect but imma have too give it to christina here wow that deep soulful voice cannot be beat by many <3

  151. RCW January 11, 2013

    Monica of course!

  152. Blue January 11, 2013

Nicki Minaj! She’s an incredible vocalist. She can sound like a 2 year old and an ailing Asian woman. But on a serious note, I’d say Jill Scott.

  153. Lyo January 11, 2013

Ehm… I´d say Brandy too… I love her tone… and her voice changed over the years… I love Beyoncé, but I like her younger voice more, she sounded alot warmer back in the day…

And Jessie J should be included in the poll too. WHAT!? That can do things with her voice. CRAZY…

At the end of the day it´s all a matter of taste….

  154. kooo January 11, 2013

no Beyonce voice is trained. She is so trained that she doesn’t know how to play with her voice show some emotion or passion within your voice. That’s something you have to have naturally wish people could understand that.

    • trina January 14, 2013

yes…so true!!! her songs are catchy and she gives u a great live performance. However i have never heard any emotion in certain songs that she sings….

  155. PrinceKing26 January 11, 2013

Vocal Bible?? Sorry that name was giving to Brandy by other celebs and artist. With that being said Brandy is the Vocal Bible!

  156. blue January 11, 2013

can we talkk about what really matters
being a vocal powerhouse is all great and all but what about the people setting the tone of the industry
the guys and girls who are literally shaping the music industry into their image.

yes whitney, mariah, celine and the rest were amazing but there is only one queen of music/pop. and she was honoured and respected as queen for a reason

  157. MissImpartial January 11, 2013

Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Joss Stone, Rebecca Ferguson. Don’t like Christina’s voice when she sings live.

    • mr.m January 12, 2013

      Stay pressed ..

  158. Sierra January 11, 2013

Stacey bathe gave that name to BRANDY.
She’s a class act even Whitney stated this .

    <3 " I wanna be down" <<<yes 🙂

  159. MissImpartial January 11, 2013

I don’t know why the media saying that Christina is the voice of this generation when there so many better singers especially in RnB. I am not a Beyonce fan but she sounds so much better live and has a better control over her voice. And I don’t know why you included Alicia Keys in there.

  160. kelly January 11, 2013

Underrated artists never get the praise they deserve. One person posted this in an earlier post. Check out Keke Wyatt doing her thing, singing eye on a sparrow. Might i add, she’s only 30 years old, so she may be old school but she’s still young and in this generation.

  161. Lolax January 11, 2013

    Carrie Underwood and Xtina

  162. MyPenIzFresh January 11, 2013

While I agree with people, Christina may have the best range and vocal capability.. I have to also consider consistency. Beyonce has a very nice range, and she may not be Whitney or Mariah, but essentially EVERYTIME Beyonce hits a stage its consistant she’s always on key, she always finds interesting runs and harmonies to add to the live experience. I have never once saw a Beyonce live performance that made me cringe or doubt the voice I heard on the cd. To put it simply, Christina (J. Hud & Fantasia included) may have the capability, but Beyonce has the follow though. I’d rather know I’m going to listen to a great performance, than be concerned that it might be a miss.

  163. truthteller January 11, 2013

Whitney Aslaya-b**** Houston trumps all these ladies in the vocal AND looks dept. No one else comes close…end of

  164. Fierce P**** January 11, 2013

Xtinarebirth: beyonce oversings? No sweetie. That would be LOUDtina Strainulera. Beyonce stays within her 3 octave range. Xtina be riffing and running all over the damn place with no sense of musicality. Have a seat.

  165. Fierce P**** January 11, 2013

Anyone voting for Christina has a horrible taste…

    &B****** will DEAL!

  167. Kash511 January 11, 2013

Ledisi, Tamar (her RANGE is outrageous) that’s it.

  168. LndoftheBlind January 11, 2013

Chris Brown is this generations male vocal bible. His runs are ridiculous (Brandy taught him everything) and his voice has depth, range and versatility. He can sing really high and sometimes sound like a female, and then he goes super low and s***. He can sing a European dance song, switch over to buble gum pop, turn around and sing the hook from an hip hop sing and then bounce onto an R&B ballad.

Having said that, will somone please post the video of India.Arie giving Brandy her props during an album release party? That will answer as to who the VB is.

    • LittleJohnny January 14, 2013

ZThis is dumbest comment. Chris Brown has wack runs and has the tone of a 8 yr old kid. Please try again and stop listening to mainstream singers for one day .

  169. Lee January 11, 2013

    What about Leona Lewis!?

  170. cocobutta January 11, 2013

Title is Brandy as it was given to her.

My personal choice would have been Christina Aguilera but her live singing has not been it in recent few years so she fell down my list
. Consistency is important to me so top 5 are.

1: Brandy (has she ever flopped ? Not large range but slays)
    2: Beyonce (very very consistent)
    3: Pink (versatile)
4: Yolanda Adams (never fails for the lord)
5: Monica (Whitney tribute promoted her up my list plus poised with presence)

Leona should be on the list but her songs (well poor single choices) have made people sleep on her actual vocal talent and technique

  171. speechless January 11, 2013

Xtina and Brandy are. And you lessors will deal.

  172. Fierce P**** January 11, 2013

    Brandy wins!!

  173. PrettyPrissyPrincess January 11, 2013

Beyonce hands down …Ledisi comes very close. But nobody on that list can go the places they go with their voice. Who could accomplish that “Boy” run in the beginning of Countdown besides B?

  174. YOGA January 11, 2013

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK YOU SAM!! DIDNT YOU ALREADY POST THIS?? Y AGAIN? R U BUGGED THAT IT IS BRANDY’S TITLE AND WILL ALWAYS BE HER TITLE FOR ETEEERRRRNIIIIITTTTTYYYYY!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  175. YOGA January 11, 2013

Of course the one chick that stats true to her craft but never gets any of the shine and can OUTSING ALL THESE DAMN BROADS! Ask Clive and Whitney and they would’ve told you…… MONICA!! Hands down!! *drops the mic*

  177. SDF January 11, 2013

Beyonce (living legend),she is so good that she doesn’t even has to make music anymore.
Leona Lewis – wonderful talent, bad manegment
Alicia Keys – great, but she is more like real musical artist with piano and all, rather than THE VOICE
    Emeli Sande – THE VOICE,HONESTY;ART
Christina A oversings, And Jennifer H is great, but she needs better songs
Adele – WELL,ADELE. nothing else to say.

  178. SLW1 January 11, 2013

hasnt this BEEN BRANDYS TITLE FOR HOW MANY YEARS NOW?!?! THE TERM VOCAL BIBLE WAS 1ST SYNONOMUS WITH BRANDY NAME SO WHY IS THIS EVEN A DISCUSSION?!?! LOLOL BRANDYS RAW TALENT TONE VOCAL CONTROL RUNS AND TECHNIC SHITS ON THIS ENTIRE LIST!

  179. aalih26 January 12, 2013

I remember the Singer Esthero saying – “If God can sing, He would sound like Brandy..”
Brandy hands down is the Vocal Bible!!!!

  180. aalih26 January 12, 2013

Timbaland was asked via twitter if he would work again with brandy – he Yes – describing her voice like that of a humming bird…. and he would record again with brandy even just for his personal use that’s how dope she is…..

  181. mr.m January 12, 2013

NO ONE HAS THE POWER OF XTINA’S VOICE .. NO ONE!!!
    the b**** can SANG ANYTHING
    X = the truth
    Y’ALL KNOW IT .. Y’ALL HAVE TO DEAL 😀

  182. all4u1 January 12, 2013

Christina’s talent is unmatched for sure. She has the versatility, the power, and can riff and run in a matter of seconds. She makes good music. However, the timing, with the release of videos and songs isn’t on point. I think she needs to change management to savage her career and not have a lot of freedom to get back on top.

  183. IJs January 13, 2013

No one gives a s*** about brandy. I’ve tried to be nice. Brandy hasn’t influenced s***. Her stans are worse than anyone elses. The only praise she gets is on youtube and up here. She is a certified flop who has overstayed her welcome hence 3 back to back flop eras. Beyonce would slay her vocally live like monica does everytime. Just like christina who isnt even in full voice would. Jazmine would the last goes on. Every era you all act like she is this respected vet and in reality she really hasnt mattered since 2002. Thats 13 years ago. Stop living in the past. The only way 2/11 will see gold is if someone drops their copy in a jewlery distribution center and it fell into a pot of it.

    • MUSICHEAD January 13, 2013

You lost all credibility when you said 2002 was 13 years ago. Go practice your arithmetic and then we can discuss how big of a flop your SAT/ACT scores were.

      • kiddontplay January 14, 2013

I love you for that…..LMAOROTF…….Brandy is the deal! and ppl get mad she is the only vocal bible……

    • CHRIAHANNA January 13, 2013

B**** PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE THE NAME IS BRANDY HUNI…………….!!!!!!!

  184. quetta January 13, 2013

Christina doesn’t sing she scream and yell. What note has she been able to hit last year without straining or sounding a hot mess? Anywho, I think I’m going to have to give it to ledisi. Last year at jazz in the gardens..I wactched her perform and she did the damn thing.she sounds like mj when she talks, lol but don’t let that fool you. She can BLOW!!!!!

  185. memmmmmmm January 13, 2013

Why is Chistina up here? Her technique is horrible. Great styling and sound, which I enjoy, but it’s not healthy. I like candy that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. I thought that vocal bibles are supposed to have remarkable healthy technique. Putting pressure on your vocal chords to change your sound is not healthy technique and let’s not get started on her frequent strain. The only people who should be on this list are Brandy, Monica and Beyonce, especially Brandy. Monica less than the other two, but definitely a candidate. What makes it so sad, is that if Christina actually took some vocal lessons, worked hard and sang in her REAL voice, she’d SLAY both Beyonce and Brandy and this is coming from a beyhive and a star.

    • kiddontplay January 14, 2013

Never probably Beyonce but not Brandy and I am a STAR that loves Beyonce as well……….But Brandy kills Christina in a her low register………………..LOL

  186. ryry247 January 14, 2013

Leona Lewis, Brandy & Celine Dion 🙂

  187. Ddeejjj January 14, 2013

    Beyoncé.

  188. Ddeejjj January 14, 2013

    Beyoncé who else?

  189. Shaquinisha-Rose January 14, 2013

Why are so many people throwing around the word “pitchy” when referring to certain singers? Do you know what that means? It means they are either singing sharp or flat. According to you they do this a lot…I honestly can’t say I have heard any of these singers sing off pitch. Maybe I haven’t listened to them as often as some.

  190. mya January 14, 2013

Really TGJ………….Brandy—the control this women has with her voice and the way she does things with it is….. amazing!!!!! she knows how to stay within her limits and gives you every emotion.. even when she is giving u a snippit of someone’s song, she puts her own spin on it……LOVE HER

beyonce– is the ultimate performer (that’s all) as a singer she is okay. now that she is opening up more i am starting to become a fan.

jennifer hudson–like someone stated early in this post….she can sing, but after a while she becomes boring and she sings like any other church singer.

Fantasia–the things she does with her voice are amazing but when she starts to do all that howling i feel like i need to start running (in fear)

that is all….everyone have a great day

  191. stacey January 14, 2013

    brandy hands down

  192. LittleJohnny January 14, 2013

OK, I’m going through this list and 2 people that are mentioned frequently are 2 people I don’t think can sing that well. Christina and Beyonce. Vocally those two are average at best.

  193. morenavee January 14, 2013

Go to youtube and search……..BEYONCE sweet dreams medley or resentment I AM… YOURS (intimate performance),or glastonbury,in fact ANY B performance of ms.Knowles, and you will witness the king (yeah that’s right its not queen B anymore, its king B of music OK).I like sweet dreams medley coz she displays a lot of vocal stunts there it just made me buy the I am… Yours and I am… World tour,a night with beyonce, and roseland DVD/CD sets and the I am… Yours and all 1+1 performances prove why she is THE vocal bible.Anybody who denies this fact is just in denial,as for brandy…she would be numba 2,she definitely can sing but her range does not match beyonce’s,as for christina she has range but her technique does not qualify as anything that is supposed to be followed by ANYONE,vocal fries are just not good she is overdoing it and it all collectively sounds like a lot of noise,BUT I still love her albums (studio) work so I would place her on third place, and monica can sing but she has nothing distinct…unlike the other 3 I’ve listed she has no signature singing style.Under 40 men I would go for Trey Songz the man can sing, besides his music being repetitive and oversexualised,he has range, unique technique and if you are not musically deaf, you’ll realise that he is not anything like Rkelly OK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Search unplugged performance and download READY TO MAKE LOVE,soothing vibrato oh just the voice makes you fall in love,he is the vocal bible .next #2 is MARIO yep that RnB singer he is not doing as well as he should be for some reason but guy can sing, just search for any of his music And I tie him to usher (climax performance).#3 miguel now I don’t even need to explain anything about him its just…. Obvious he deserves a run for the title.remember these are popular singers I’m talking about….otherwise if we go really technical you wouldn’t recognise some of the singer and I wonder are MAXWELL and josh groban under 40? If they are they qualify.ne-yo…average……chris brown…no no no (only studio I love his music and of cause my idol rihanna ims still comin 2 ya).I know one day ill name rihanna the best singer in the world and MEAN IT.She has potential and she is vocally improving rapidly and occasionally but she has the most distinct voice and tone + accent from ANY singer in the world,(no rita is not caribean she is british albanian she won’t sound like rihanna OK).so for 2013…female VB-BEYONCE and male VB-TREY SONGZ. IN the future female VB-RIHANNA and male-we’ll just see.keep in mind being an artist is not having the biggest voice,it’s having A voice and finding an artistic, distinct and creative way of using it. #done

    • LittleJohnny January 14, 2013

I’ve seen those and she is not a great vocalist, but a mediocre singer. She is average at best.

  194. danny b January 14, 2013

Honestly, I dont know why Brandy was ever given that title. She does have incredible runs and an impeccable unique tone, but that is about it. I really havent gotten into Brandy’s vocals until Two Eleven. She is amazing live as well in the studio but “Vocal bible”? i just dont see it. I hate to compare, and as debatable as it is, i think Beyonce would be more suited for that title if anything. Sure she might “scream” a note here or there, as most “listeners” claim, but if you really dissect her voice, its really perfect in a sense. Her tone, her range, and most importantly her control, something alot of vocalists this generation seem to lack. And with each project/album , she seems to learn and try new things with her voice and she shows growth consistently. From Dangerously In Love, to Listen, to Halo, to I Care. You can see and hear how much her voice has developed. Especially in I Care, those acrobatics she does with the guitar is something not many people have heard or can do. This is far from a Bey stan just defending her because Im a stan. This is a stan validating why I am a stan of Beyonces. And this is also a music listener recognizing great vocals when I hear them.

BullshYYYT! Brandy would totally sing the f*** out of all of Beyonce’s song! And sound way better and draw and audience in to the lyrics! Beyonce is a great entertainer as well not taking anything from her! But don’t try and take away from what Brandy has shown the industry as a child sanging with the Best of them……”Missing You” the Set it Off soundtrack……Brandy is just getting back on the scene with support and a great team now, and making her own choices, be sure to tune into BET Feb 13, I heard she was the best Perfomance of the night!!!!!Brandy is the vocal bible true the term is because her vocals are studied. I know I sing and I don’t like to scream and make stupid sounds! I like for my tone to be good and my runs to be clean! I learned that from Brandy and Luther! Brandy is it…. & while I am her why is Christina in the led, she screams like she’s caught in a hurricane or tornado…….

The term “vocal bible” is F****** ANNOYING !!!

  196. TEENBRANDYFAN January 14, 2013

To me it doesnt matter what any of us think
None of us are singers and the majority of singers cite Brandy as the Vocal Bible. 5He term was made up in refrence to her and imo asking 2ho is the Vocal Bible is disrespectful to Brandy simply because nobody called anyone V9cal Bible until they started calling Brandy Vocal Bible

If you look at that list, when god forbid, all these ladies leave this earth..there are only two (so far), who have given iconic performances…and that is Christina and Beyonce. J Hud is getting there, but not at the level of the other two.

Between Christina and Beyonce, is it not fair to say Beyonce is known as the “entertainer” of our generation, while people are legit just calling Christina the “voice” of our generation now…so I will go with Christina.

Say what you will about her tone, etc…when her career is recapped, you have the super iconic James Brown performance, Etta James tribute, Aretha tribute, I Love Porgy Grammy tribute, ANOM MTV Awards performance, pick any of the top performance of Beautiful…I could go on and on….and she has nailed these songs at big events. Beyonce has had her share epic performances too, but lets keep it 100…I have never heard anyone call her the voice of a generation.

    • danny b January 15, 2013

You dont hear Beyonce being called that all the time because her voice gets overshadowed by her ability to dance and entertain and put a great show along with other things like big hair, big costumes, big songs. If all she ever did was stand and sing at a mic her whole career, I most definitely think people would liken her to that title. But because she has so much else going on for her other than voice, people look past her amazing singing talent.

  204. Carl k.o. Mitchell January 15, 2013

    Brandy is queen

  205. Sonya January 15, 2013

Alicia is the winner as far as I’m concerned. It’s not about the high notes or always hitting it just right, but the power and emotion she delivers through her music is what touches me most and I love her for that. On the other hand Celine Dion is a powerhouse vocalist and really impresses me with the range she can deliver.

  206. Joey January 16, 2013

Y’all crazy beyonce can sing but her voice lacks emotion! THIS GOES TO BRANDY! All of these ppl are crazy talented but just about every artist out there now adore BRANDY!!! My opinion is that Brandys vocals give u pure emotion and she has about 7 different tones!!!!!!!!

  207. Jay lyric January 16, 2013
