Chart Check: 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar Continue Hip Hop Chart Reign

Published: Wednesday 6th Feb 2013 by David

While sales of R&B music continue slide week on week, it’s safe to say Hip Hop shows no signs of following suit. In fact, thanks to releases by ‘Leggo‘ contributor 2 Chainz &  ‘The Recipe’ maestro Kendrick Lamar, the genre has made another of commercial leaps and bounds in recent months.

Details below…

With 693,000 units moved in the US since October 22nd 2012, Lamar’s ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ already stands as one of the fastest selling releases of the year, while its lead single ‘Swimming Pools’ boasts sales of 1,063,920 digital units sold.

Interesting, considering the cut only peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100- but did reach #1 on the US Rap Songs Chart.

Joining him in besting their Pop competitors is 2 Chainz‘ ‘Based On A T.R.U. Story’ which now enjoys Gold certification by way of 523,000 US albums sold since August 14th of last year.

Debuting with sales of 147,000, the project is now 477,000 units away from hitting the 1 million mark.

Sure, while its week on week sales may not see it reach that milestone until the April of next year, the LP’s favorable sales follows a rising chart trend, which sees Hip Hop acts outsell albums released by their Pop counterparts even without the benefit of smash hit singles akin to Ke$ha‘s ‘Die Young’ and Christina Aguilera‘s ‘Your Body‘.

Singles, which despite soaring on a singles front, struggled to push their supporting albums (‘Warrior’ & ‘Lotus’) to heights attained by Drake‘s ‘Take Care’ and the aforementioned ‘Good’ and & ‘T.R.U.

A$AP Rocky’s Long Live A$AP album is gonna be the biggest hip hop album of 2013.

He debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and moved 139 000 units in opening sales, quit impressive considering it leaked a month earlier. Kendrick and 2 Chainz could NEVER!!

My fav track on the album has to be Hell followed by Long Live A$AP followed by Wild For The Night.

This album will s*** on your fav hip hop album!

What are you talking about? Kendrick moved 242, 122 units his first week with no major promo. He only came in 2nd because of Taylor Swift. So what do you mean ” he could never”? Good Kid Maad city has Rave reviews. Asap was nothing more than a lack luster

I love A$AP Rocky but I think Kendrick’s did better. Either way, Rocky will be this year’s breakout hip-hop star like Kendrick was last year.

P.S Wild For The Night and Phoenix are my favs

Congrats to kendrick! It’s definitely his best work since Section.80. Also, 2 Chainz? I never understood the appeal but good for him I guess.

Congrats to Kendrick Lamar! To be honest, I think his album will go down as a hip-hop classic 10 years from now. Its my favorite hip-hop release since Kanye’s MBDTF. As for 2 Chainz …….he’s the male Kreayshawn in my opinion. I dont see the appeal at all
