Hot Shots: Frank Ocean Poses It Up For ‘The New York Times’

Published: Thursday 7th Feb 2013 by David

While R&B is yet to spawn any new female artists that have taken the world by storm, the last few years have seen no shortage of male contributors take center stage.

Indeed, leading a pack made up of the Beyonce approved Miguel, Elijah Blake and Luke James comes Frank Ocean. A fact, the New York Times were keen to take advantage of when they joined forces with the star for a moving spread this month, some of which can be seen above and below.

Read the full piece here, and be sure to look out for Frank on this Sunday’s 55th Annual Grammy Awards, live on CBS.

NO NEED TO WORRY; I got you …boo : I’m going to buy your CD…

  2. JUELZ February 7, 2013

There is something HIGHLY PRETENTIOUSE about this man.

Why does her continuously feel the need to over-emphasise and exxagurate his “I AM DIFFERENT” act?

Talented? Yes. Irritatingly Boring and False? DEFINITELY.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 7, 2013

But talent is what counts, isn´t it?

      • JUELZ February 7, 2013

…Very true. However, many artists in the past have been widely recognized for their ‘talent’ but failed to resonate with the public, especially on a consistent level.

Which is why, personally, I feel that Frank’s success, if one may call it that, is more representational of ‘one hit wonder’ status.

His music is highly charismatic, but he lacks personality and appeal on an overall basis.

        I.E: Susan Boyle?

    • Eye Candy February 7, 2013

Because he is different. If this was some talentless fool I don’t think people would be complaining as much.

    • mob: django unchained February 7, 2013

I don’t see or hear the talent!

Frank Ocean = Lana Del Rey to me.

      Both are smoke and mirrors!

      • Common Sense February 7, 2013

Lana Del Rey bought her career Frank Ocean worked for it. Try again.

      • boopboop February 7, 2013

@mob – get OUTTA my head! i think of frank as the black male lana del rey too! to me their both boring and overhyped!

      • Eye Candy February 7, 2013

Lana Del Rey has sold over 3 million CD’s with “Born To Die” with no huge hits.
Where is “Fortune”? Still sitting at the 500,000 mark?
        Oops!

    • Common Sense February 7, 2013

You probably just don’t like him. He comes across as an artsy musician to me, but not pretentious like Kanye West.

  3. My Forehead Tho February 7, 2013

You better rock them b*** pads gurrrl !!

But Luke James is the most talented amongst the group of nominees, he deserves to win

    • lol February 7, 2013

Luke James is boring he has a nice falsetto but his music is bor-ring

  4. Kouture February 7, 2013

I wouldn’t call this guy overrated, but he is definitely overhyped. His cd isn’t that great, sorry. But I’m happy that an R&B act is getting mainstream shine. Gay agenda and all.

    • mob: django unchained February 7, 2013

But he said he was not INTERESTED in being declared a R&B artist! Funny how he is so willing to accept such an “inferior role”. LOL anything for publicity

      • lol February 7, 2013

Funny you say that , he covered the New York Times being heralded as the “Self Made Prince of Pop” … you can pick your jaw up now 😉

      • CHUDDS February 7, 2013

But Frank isn’t a pop artist…. -_- He is more so indie R&B/alternative R&B whatever you wanna call it. But his music is very R&Bish…just not the kind we’re used to.

  7. mob: django unchained February 7, 2013

@sam YOU NEED TO FIX YOUR SITE! This new formate simply isn’t working. The black background in the comment section makes it difficult to read.

**smh new and improve isn’t always the best

  8. lol February 7, 2013

Bow to the Self Made Prince of Pop!!!

  9. CzarM February 7, 2013

    Pause.

  10. ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) February 7, 2013

I’m not feeling his hobo look. He really irks me. He gives off this false since of entitlement/arrogance…

  11. MUSICHEAD February 7, 2013

It’s very surprising that someone with very little vocal ability is given so much hype and attention from the media.

The man’s true talent is behind the scenes (writing and producing). I get that he is trying to be different but when did quality of music become less important than image and enigma. All of his bandwagon fans will be nowhere to be found 2 years from now once the “I’m gay” hype has died down.

    • CandyCoatedPain February 7, 2013

IA. Personally I don’t think Frank’s music or his personality is compelling enough to sustain the attention he’s getting now for coming out. I’ll be very surprised if people are still talking about him around this time next year.

  12. CHUDDS February 7, 2013

Lyrically, Frank is awesome. His delivery is just…..dull. I think I would’ve enjoyed CO more if someone else sang the tracks….Good luck to him @ the Grammys on Sunday.

  13. ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ February 7, 2013

Wtf is up with this site? The black background thing? I thought it was just my laptop. I like the regulating comments thing because so many offensive things have been said on this site that shouldn’t be said. You should make a restriction of one account per IP as well because some people be making 20 accounts.

Same ol’ same ol’ from Frank, its easier to see the pretentious, fake, and annoying side f one person when you don’t like them than it is when you like them.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ February 7, 2013

      What happened to my avi?

  14. qutsar February 8, 2013

GO FRANK, ROOTING FOR YOU ALL THE WAY!!!

  15. JER February 8, 2013

Not here for him. He and his team have cunningly used the internet and social media to market his sexuality to garner attention to his album. Otherwise, his mediocre album would be lost among all the other great male R&B singers. His VMA performance was a mess and he offers little to nothing to a genre hanging by a few wig hairs. I see the same GORLS jumping on the bandwagon his team had prayers and incense counting on. SMH. Even Chris Brown’s UnFortune and Usher’s Looking 4 More Sales had better songs than Frank Ocean’s. But hey there’s always gotta be someone that’s overrated, how else will the Llama del Taco’s and Jessie J’s of the world survive? ch…

  16. oops February 8, 2013

“self made” is correct no one else is calling him prince of pop…. People are grasping at straws for this young man… nice writing skill but he is no near Maxwell. When do u call pop prince with no #1 singles and less air play on the radio or platinum album sales….. Oh that right “self Made”… We get NY times. (wink) . Good luck… I hope he gets at least one Grammy because heaven forbid if he goes home with none…. We will definitely see another Controversy/Temper Tantrum on social media.
