Michelle Williams Dishes On ‘Super Bowl’ Performance, ‘FELA’, & Gospel Album With Billboard

Published: Thursday 7th Feb 2013 by Sam

With the world still buzzing about Destiny’s Child‘s reunion at the Super Bowl, member Michelle Williams sat down with Billboard to discuss the reunion everyone is talking about.

Already back on the road with hit musical FELA, the singer-actress spoke with the industry bible about what it was like performing with her girls again, the difficulty keeping it a secret, and her hot new Gospel album.

Peep excerpts below, where live performance footage from FELA also awaits…

On Reuniting With Kelly & Beyonce:

“Oh, the Super Bowl was beautiful.

When three good girlfriends are together, you’re free and you don’t care who’s around; you’re just trying to catch up and be goofy. I had a blast. People at home watching… they don’t catch the moments where, like in the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ pose, I was smiling. We were all smiling. I was laughing with my girls. I don’t care what anybody else says. I don’t let it get me down. It was a beautiful thing.”

On Keeping It A Secret:

“I was just trying to protect the integrity of Beyonce’s show.  She really wanted it to be a surprise. Had I not had to promote ‘Fela!,’ I would not have had to answer those questions. So when people said, ‘Hey, Michelle, is it going to happen?’ I wasn’t going to say ‘yes.’ It wasn’t my show. (Beyonce) didn’t want anybody to know.”

On A Proper Destiny’s Child Comeback:

“Who knows. It’s a possibility. I think this was a good moment, and it felt good for all of us and you definitely want those moments again.”

On Her New Gospel Album:

“It’s an inspirational/gospel project, but it sounds like an R&B/pop album. Harmony (the producer) gave me the same tracks he would give to, like, Chris Brown and Kelly Rowland. Sometimes when you say you’re doing a gospel album, it seems like people go back to their vaults of music they did in 1992, and I’m like, ‘No, give me fresh-sounding music.’ So this (album) sounds very current and contemporary.”

Great read – especially the portions about the new album. What’s more, with Williams also promising some surprise guests, the project is easily becoming one of our most anticipated this year.

For now, though, check out the Michelle soar as Sandra Isadore in FELA below…

The DC reunion was such a great thing for all DC3 fans, I just wish they would do one last tour together.
From the video it seems as though Michelle is doing quite well with Fela, a few days ago she said there’s a possibilty that Fela may come to South Africa, that would be so awesome and I simply cannot wait for her album to come out

She’s a great lady. As far as the haters, Michelle still has mo’ money!!!

Her money cannot fool the saints of God. Either you’re hot ore you’re cold. One minute gospel, one minute half naked at the Superbowl and this. Not hating on her or her talent however I can’t help but wonder what is the purpose of the gospel album. It’s the anointing that breaks the yokes. So, it must be about the money.

  6. HOWYOULIKEIT February 7, 2013

    Michelle was absolutely stunning

  7. MISHKA February 7, 2013

Michelle looked fierce at the halftime show and she did better than I expected. Plus she’s still working consistently as a singer.

Fail to understand what was the problem of Ms Pink Oil the other day…

  8. I almost crashed my car into Rihanna’s forehead February 7, 2013

Rihanna (aka R****) is a no talent w**** who sucks d*** for invites, can’t sing or perform a lick and she has an alien forehead, a p** nose and a stupid accent that deserves to mocked. If she wants to continue her FAILED acting career she better start auditioning to star in horror movies. Deport her ass back to shithole toilet Barbadoes.

    R**** is a b**** is a s*** is a w****.

Why not just say you don’t like her style. Overkill.

Yes HARMONY SAMUELS has been working EXTENSIVELY on this album. It is going to be HER BEST YET BY FAR!

He produced Keyshia Cole’S “Enough of No Love”, JHud’s “Think Like a Man”, Fantasia’s “Lose to Win” and Chris Brown’s “Say it With Me” and “Oh My Love”

PLUS WARRYN CAMPBELL who’s produced most of Mary Mary’s biggest hits included the huge crossover smash “Shackles (Praise You)” along with “Heaven”, “Get Up”, “God in Me” and “Walking”

Oh and let me not forget about MICHELLE’S VOCAL GAME! Slaynitra is coming to snatch and dash church hats, wigs, lacefronts and clip-ins! Get your glue ready!

    AND OF COURSE, FOR KEYSHIA:

I’m glad Michelle is not letting the haters(Keshia Cole) get to her. Good luck to you girl and keep doing your thing! lol at the way the Bey Hive dragged Keshia…that s*** had me dying slowly.

    • Music Soul Harmony February 7, 2013

I didn’t drag Keyshia and I am a fan of Beyonce! I actually agreed with her. That’s sum fake S***. Everybody and their mama knows Michelle was just an extra. Now everyone wanna fake the funk. Okaaay.

      • House Mother Kanye February 7, 2013

It doesn’t matter…She was/is no position to talk about chelly. And just cause you didn’t drag her, doesn’t mean the rest of the Hive didn’t. Okaaay

      • Keep It Real February 7, 2013

Music Soul Harmony, everyone is entitled to their opinion. So next time you are ringing up a whopper combo meal I hope the guy on the grill yells out that you can’t count to make change.

  12. the real xoxo February 7, 2013

I think they should do a proper reunion album in 2015 for their 10-year anniversary since their last era.

  13. Kouture February 7, 2013

I can’t believe Offkeyshia Cole had the audacity to shade Michelle!!! Maybe if she had some talent her damn self, people wouldn’t have minded!!!

  14. Pop Royalty February 7, 2013

why you do not dish on why your Mic was f*****’ OFF ?

  15. ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) February 7, 2013

    I’m here for that album!

  16. bad bad February 7, 2013

I like Michelle alot and I like how she started her career with Gospel but I really think it’s time to move away from that Genre and have her show us and that H** Keyshia Cole, that she’s great. Ps Im not putting down Gospel at all.

    • Jonathan Gardner February 7, 2013

She released a critically-acclaimed pop album in 2008 called Unexpected.

We Break the Dawn was top 50 here in the UK and #4 US Dance and #1 Dance Airplay. Second single The Greatest went to #1 US Dance and was listed one place behind Lose My Breath on the Billboard Dance 2000-2009 decade-end chart at #39.

The album has sold nowhere near it should have done. It was a great pop debut

    I LIVE FOR MICHELLE!!!!!

I’M SORRY WHEN SHE POPPED OUT OF THE TOASTER ON THE SUPER BOWL
THAT WAS THE STRONGEST, AND FIERCEST I’VE EVER SEEN HER! SHE WAS LIKE “MY NAME IS SLAYCHELLE AND I’M HERE TO COME FOR BLOOD” AND SHE DID!!!!!
PLUS SHE SOUNDED THE BEST ON SINGLE LADIES!

I CAN WAIT TO SEE HER IN LA FOR FELA! I GOT MY TICKETS AND I HOPE TO MEET HER!!!

I WILL SAY… I’M GLAD TO HEAR THAT THE GOSPEL ALBUM WILL HAVE MORE OF A CURRENT FEEL

I STILL FEEL (AND AFTER SEEING THAT CLIP) THAT SHE NEEDS A NEO-SOUL RECORD UNDER HER BELT. HER VOICE IS FOR THAT!!!

    *PLAYS HUNGOVER*
