Retro Rewind: Rihanna Rocks 2011 NBA ‘All Star Game’ Halftime

Published: Sunday 17th Feb 2013 by TGJ

When it comes to most Rihanna performances, you should always expect three P’s: “p-patting (or popping)”, “pitch problems”, and “pain” (see:  ears of viewers).  No further evidence of such is needed than the stagewalker’s 2011 NBA ‘All Star Game’ Halftime show.  Indeed, hoping to best (or at least match) the great NBA All-Star halftime shows of idol Beyonce (2004), Destiny’s Child (2005), Christina Aguilera (2007), and Toni Braxton before her, the Barbadian came armed with a slew of hits from her critically ashamed album ‘Loud’.

With mentors Jay Z and Beyonce amongst onlookers in the crowd, Ri turned to favorite collaborators Drake and Kanye West to join her in belting out ‘What’s My Name’, ‘Only Girl In the World’, and more much to fan delight.  If such delight was shared by non-Navy members, on the other hand, is a different story.  For, after a promising opening, the performance quickly went downhill – leaving the hitmaker to showcase her consistent inconsistency with breathlessness and Tinman-inspired dance moves.

We at TGJ are certainly proud to say she has comes leagues from this performance and truly wish her continuance on her path to betterment.  And, while we anxiously await Alicia Keys’ NBA All-Star game performance today, here’s hoping this showing was not one she studied to ensure her performance goes in the history books – for the right reasons.
