Lauryn Hill Avoids Prison (For Now) / Signs New Deal With Sony Music

Published: Monday 22nd Apr 2013 by Sam

Though celebrated for her classic contributions to music, Lauryn Hill has been a hot topic for all the wrong reasons in the time since her solo breakthrough ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’ etched itself in the history books back in 1998. Indeed, so-so performances, personal drama, and erratic rants about “the system” have plagued the former Fugees singer.

The latest, as widely reported, is the criminal charges filed against the 37-year-old for not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned between 2005 -2007.

Having earlier plead guilty, today saw mother-of-six Hill arrive at court for sentencing. Find out what happened after the jump…

Slammed by Judge Madeline Cox Arleo for failing to fulfil her promise to pay the agreed $554,000 portion of the total $1 million debt by time of today’s sentencing, Hill (who has only coughed up $50,000) was spared hearing her punishment (which, given the severity of the issue, could mean a prison spell). Why? Her attorney, Nathan Hochman, has negotiated a longer window of time for her to come up with the coins. More specifically, two weeks. Thereafter, he has made no secret of his plan to plead for probation instead of time in jail.

Perhaps most interesting, though, was the revelation that emerged amidst the legalities. For, it was confirmed that Hill quietly signed a multi-million-dollar recording contract with longtime label Sony Music recently; a deal her team say will they will take a loan out from to pay the debt by the time of the new sentencing date of May 6th. Prior to this, the plan was to leverage the outstanding amount against two of the singer’s homes. {Source I} {Source II}

Of course, Lauryn sorting out Lauryn should come first and foremost. However, as supporters of incredible talent, we can’t help but salivate at the prospect of what the new contract could mean.

In thinking of the bigger picture, the cynic in us feels the label’s interjection could just be a strategic move to protect one of their most prized assets (something prison would taint). Still, how awesome would it be if new music was to come out of this? The demand is there, as are the A-list producers to help Hill make that magic. Time will tell.

well it is no secret that she suffers from a mental illness so we should have some compassion for Lauryn Hill.

Anyway, this Miseducation of lauryn Hill was the GREATEST R&B album in the last 15 years.

I wish her the best b/c she is the mother of six children. …God bless Lauryn.

I gave up on Lauryn years ago. I don’t know why Sony signed her again. She’s never gonna release another album. Honestly, Lauryn doesn’t even seem mentally stable. She gave us a GEM (TMOLH) and that’s good enough for me…smh.

Lol I’m so weak at honeychildplease comment even tho I hate
His ass…anyway, I want new music from lauryn but I also
Want her to sort out whatever personal problems she has going
On cuz her live concerts lately have been nothing short
of a travesty. I love music tho so I’m always gonna support her
If that’s what she decides to do. U just gotta love a person
that sings from their heart and doesn’t sell themselves out
Just for commercial success all the time.

I know this is kind of selfish of me, but I at least hope L-Boogie records some music for the Best Man sequel like she has done for the first movie. Please come back Ms. Lauryn, we miss you.

No new music is going to come from this. Lauryn most likely signed a new contract for the bonus money and to renegotiate profits on her past work. She gave up on music and fame years ago, and today isn’t even mentally stable enough to handle the rigors of a music career.

I’m confused how did she earn 1.8 million from 2005-2007? She hasn’t released an album since 1998 & a live album in 2002. A failed Fugees reunion in 2005. If she earned so much how could she not pay the 554.000 before her hearing date? Doesn’t make sense how celebrities can’t pay their taxes with the millions they make from their music, touring, etc. I hope we hear new music soon!

This is kinda good news. If Lauryn has signed a new deal she will be forced to make new music, and if her heart isn’t in it it will be sub par or she’ll get dropped before its released if the record company isn’t happy, and then maybe sued. Lautyn needs to alow herself to work with writers and prodcers and ot be so self suficiant. I would love to hear a Fantasia and Lauryn duet

Look at how shallow and ignorant some of these posters are.
Lauryn is the Queen of Hip-hop and even though i doubt it, i hope this means a new album.

None of your faves have made an album as good as ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’.

    • Beck April 23, 2013

…none of my faves are pending trial for tax evasion either.

      • truth tea (take a sip) April 23, 2013

        Who cares?
Stans act as if THEY are getting paid by bragging about their faves money.
        musically Lauryn > your fave.

  18. nattyyy April 23, 2013

She obviously only signed the deal in order to pay the debt! New album? I’ll believe it when I see it. She’s made no secret of her dislike of the music industry so for those expecting a ‘mis-education part 2’, or anything close to it, are going to be very disappointed!!

  19. Loyalty April 23, 2013

Oh Lauryn 🙁 Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was one of the best albums of all time.
