Twitter Announce New #Music App / Downloadable Now

Published: Thursday 18th Apr 2013 by Sam

After much speculation, Twitter today drew back the curtains on their new music application — aptly titled Twitter #Music

Details after the jump…

Touted as a music discovery tool, the app allows users to discover music that is trending on the social network via the new platform as well as play tracks within the app with the tap of a button — thanks to integration with iTunes (previews), as well as Spotify and Rdio (full songs).

Not to be mistaken as an after-thought addition to Twitter, the platform is a standalone app that is available today for iPhone users in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The social media juggernaut confirm that the software will also receive an Android incarnation and will eventually be rolled out in more countries.

How does it work?

The new service will help Twitter users discover music using four tabs: a ‘Popular’ page will show new music trending across Twitter, an ‘Emerging’ tab showcasing “hidden talent found in tweets”.

Users will be able to follow artists on the service and a ‘Suggested’ tab will recommend acts based on those users already track.

What’s more, a ‘#NowPlaying’ tab shows songs that friends are tweeting about and listening to.

Each of the above pages features a grid of artists and songs that can be played from the app.

What Twitter Says

A post on the official Twitter blog today said, “Today, we’re releasing Twitter #music, a new service that will change the way people find music, based on Twitter.

It uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists. It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.”

************

With the music industry shape-shifting almost weekly, the arrival of the Twitter music app presents quite an interesting addition – especially in an era that sees charts increasingly impacted by online streaming.

What’s more, should it catch on, the app carries much potential to apportion more “power” into the hands of consumers, as well as independent talent.

We’re playing around with it as we type and you can too…

Hopefully it will help artists do the kind of music they love without trying so hard to appeal to radio…it’s a known practice that radio airplay is paid for, fans requesting their favorite music but radio refuses to play….if this becomes popular, then perhaps billboard would revise its rules to incorporate twitter music…i miss the days where people had to go to record stores to purchase music BUT since technology is the order of the day,i’ll be interested to see how this turns out.

What a joke the music industry is these days, i don’t even have Twitter. Just a bunch of people following every move their fav. celebrities make.

    • JOHNVIDAL April 18, 2013

You are so damn right. This will only benefit the crappy artists. Just like the streaming on vevo is now included for Billboard Hot 100. Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift and from time to time Beyonce and Rihanna crazy stans. Those are the type of people who live on Twitter
