Of course, while it was Kanye who came in at #1, the real success story here lies in Cole’s ‘Born Sinner‘- only 30,078 units away from snatching the #1 spot from West and reigning supreme as this week’s highest selling album.
When one considers the power that lies in West’s brand and in his hold over the buying public, ‘Sinner’s feat is nothing short of impressive, scoring mass commercial and critical acclaim while West could only nab the former.
With the world now tuned into his cause, here’s hoping a real effort is made to push the album to Platinum status before its first birthday and- if his fans have their way- nab him multiple Grammy noms for the well received project.
Side note: In occupying the #1 and 2 spots, ‘Yeezus’ and ‘Sinner’ are the first Hip Hop albums to dominate the Billboard 200 in the same week since November 2010. Back then, Kanye’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ (#1) and Nicki Minaj‘s ‘Pink Friday’ (#2) set the aforementioned record with their releases, fighting off competition from every genre on the chart that week.
Later that month, Minaj scored a new peak position of #1 when the album sold a further 660,000 units- bringing its first month sales to 1 million units in the US.

Why are the sales of Kelly Rowland’s album so low?
I bought it three days ago and have, practically, played it non stop, ever since.
But… ‘Brandy, Keyshia Cole, Fantasia’, and every other Urban artist (non hip hop) are all seeing first week sales near, and around, a similar sales bracket. Something isnt right? It can’t be all down to the fact that “R&B Is Dead” either.

Kanye is a divisive figure (something I appreciate about him) who just made a very divisive album. J. Cole’s album, which I also bought, is SO safe. There no adventure in site. It’s just a “nice” album. Guess what, making “nice” music will never put you into the elite. He’s extremely talented so, hopefully, one day he’ll make an album that will ruffle some feathers rather than music that simply confirms people.
He’s still young. Only album # 2. There’s time. When he gets to album #6 like Kanye, hopefully his music will be at another level.

Fantasia also appeals to an older fan base ages 30 up besides the youngins. She also has great promotional backin every album! As for Keyshia Cole she still holds on to a few of those fans who brought her albums when albums actualy sold very well… for you to say Kelly does just enough to get by is absolutely ridiculous! She put out her best record thus far; she also has grown as a performer vocally as well as stage presence! I’m very satisfied with what Kelly is doing! The only problem I had this era was the date of the release of the album and her not tweeting and promoting over twitter enough!
Kelly is my girl, but it’s so disheartening to see her selling so poorly again. I looooove the album, but there is a major disconnect between her and the general public. Dirty Laundry was supposed to bridge the gap, but it hasn’t quite done so yet. I just want Kelly to WIN!!!
Congrats to Cole and Ye! I must be in the minority because I loved Kanyes album. 6 albums in, and hes as innovative as ever. People need to realize that the old Kanye is gone….

Kelly and company did this to themselves. It’s not like Kisses Down Low was a massive hit, or is still gaining at radio. A new single, video and promotional trek should have been in circulation a good 6 weeks before the album was released. And if “Dirty Laundry” was gonna be it, then they should have pressed full steam ahead with it, instead of dragging their heels. Her album was released with virtually nothing being heavily pushed. Her management is second rate and her A&R is atrocious.

60,000-70,000 copies first week for these R&B artists is not a flop anymore, it´s the normal thing.
Some of the best album sellers of the last years haven´t been able to do more than 180,000 copies or so with their last albums (Michael Buble or Alicia Keys). Britney or Beyonce suffered a sales decline with their lat albums, and that was two years ago. We´ll see when they release their new albums. I mean, this is a sinking ship. Even Kanye “only” sold 328,000 (with no promo, I know, it´s still great). It seems the only way is a la Justin Timberlake, crazy hype about the first week sales with all the media supporting you as if you were a new Jesus or something. If not, it´s impossible. They will do it with Eminem too. I´m sure. Only with 2 or 3 albums per year. They are their precious white boys (and don´t ask me why cos Eminem could have been bashed to death by the media a la Chris Brown, knowing what a problematic, controversial or even disgusting person he is, but oh wait, it doesn´t matter, they won´t focus on that, he is the cool white rapper, it´s ok even if he bashes women, etc, normally reason enough to be blacklisted, as it should be)
