The icon that is Mariah Carey stepped out in Jersey City last night, recording her performance for Macy’s annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Liberty State Park.
Joined by ‘Use Me‘ sensation Miguel, the star reportedly impressed her audience with a number of her strongest releases, including a rousing rendition of Katharine Lee Bates‘ ‘America The Beautiful’.

As far as vocals ago, here’s hoping Mimi opted for a well produced ‘live’ vocal over a live vocal for reasons we’d rather not go into.
As far as the new album goes, we can’t wait to hear how the success of ‘Beautiful‘ has altered her direction- hopefully pulling on the same Adult Contemporary romanticism that’s set to take the song to Platinum status in a few week’s time.
Call us crazy, but we’re hoping there are plans to place to drop the project around the Christmas period, as to capitalize on the fourth quarter sales rush and the annual hype ‘All I Want For Christmas’ brings her.
For, with consumers set to pick up that single in their thousands during the period, why not kill two birds with one stone by giving them a new album to go along with it?

Well I, for one, love the ‘raspy/husky’ quality of Mariah’s voice these days. In my opinion, it adds an extra, emotional texture that wasn’t there beforehand.
It was a similar situation to both ‘Whitney & Amy’ (before they left us) and their respective voices; ‘I Look To You’ and ‘Body & Soul’ were some of the best songs they had ever recorded in their entire careers and their ‘new’ voices is what did it justice.
What I think Mariah needs to retreat too, musically speaking, is Jazz music. She no longer has the voice for ‘power-ballads’ but she most definitely has the voice to record some excellent, Anita Baker/Billie Holliday/Dinah Washington- esque ‘R&B/Soul-Jazz/Quiet Storm/Smooth-Soul’ music.
Mariah’s voice has changed so.much throughout her career: Rch and Resonant (1990-93), light and high (1994-96), hoarse and husky (1997-2001), thin and raspy (2002-2005), deep and dry (2006-2009) and now to the thin and nasal (2010-present).
She needs a change, artistically. 😉
