J.Cole Apologizes For Autism Remark

After coming under intense criticism for a lyric spewed in the Drake driven jam ‘Jodeci’, J.Cole has issued a heartfelt and truly genuine apology to any he may have offended.

Full story below…

Taking to Twitter after learning of a petition launched urging him to remove this line from the number, he shared:

Recently there’s been a trend that includes rappers saying something
offensive, only to be attacked for it in the media and pressured to
apologize. I have to be completely honest and say there’s a part of me
that resents that. I view rap similar to how I view comedy. It’s going
to ruffle feathers at times. It’s going to go “too far”. I do not
believe that an apology is needed every time someone is offended,
especially when that apology is really only for the sake of saving an
endorsement or cleaning up bad press.

With that said, this is not the case today. This letter is sincere.
This apology IS necessary.

In a recent verse on the song “Jodeci Freestyle”, I said something
highly offensive to people with Autism. Last week, when I first saw a
comment from someone outraged about the lyric, I realized right away
that what I said was wrong. I was instantly embarrassed that I would
be ignorant enough say something so hurtful. What makes the crime
worse is that I should have known better.

To the entire Autism community who expressed outrage, I’m moved and
inspired by your passion, and I’m amazed at how strong you are as a
unit. I have now read stories online from parents about their
struggles and triumphs with raising an Autistic child and I admire how
incredibly strong you have to be to do so. It’s touching. It also
makes what I said even more embarrassing for me. I feel real shame.
You have every right to be angry.

To anyone suffering from Autism, either mildly or severely, I am
sorry. I’m bound to make mistakes in my life, but in my heart I just
want to spread Love.

I want to educate myself more on Autism, and I’ll gladly own my
mistake and serve as an example to today’s generation that there’s
nothing cool about mean-spirited comments about someone with Autism.
People with this disorder and their loved ones have to go through so
much already, the last thing they need is to hear something as
ignorant as what I said. I understand.

To the parents who are fighting through the frustrations that must
come with raising a child with severe autism, finding strength and
patience that they never knew they had; to the college student with
Asperger’s Syndrome; to all those overcoming Autism. You deserve
medals, not disrespect. I hope you accept my sincere apology.

Much Love

-Cole

Honest and succinct, we’re sure any who took offence to the entertainer’s remark realise that- in all honesty- meant no harm by it, and sees this letter for what it is….genuine.
Sure, while the remark would have gone some way to hurt those affected by the illness, the upside to this has seen Cole raise awareness and understanding for it with his ever growing audience….turning what could have been a negative experience into an educational one!

Stupid ass why did he say it in the first place? I swear these ni**as are getting stupider like Rick Ross and that date r*** line wtf why are they saying dumb s*** they know they’ll get controversy for?

    • Tito July 21, 2013

But you’re using the word “N****” like its nothing. Hypocrite, much?

    • _Krown July 22, 2013

He recorded that freestyle spontaneously for Drake after a night out in the club. He wasn’t even in his right frame of mind and they put it out the next day. It was meant to be a play on words, not a diss.

He admitted it was wrong, what else can he do? People are always pretending to be holier than thou. All you can do as a human is ask for forgiveness and realize your mistakes, he did both. Get over it.

DAMN! You cant even rap about anything you wont anymore. I bet if this was Eminem. Em would’ve said s*** but kept it movin.

He didn’t owe nobody anything, sick of these sensitive ass people. This is America, he has freedom of speech as long as it’s not ”hate” speech meant to entice a criminal act. You got autism, deal with and stop your bitching, America is turning into a socialist nation.

    • You’re an idiot. July 21, 2013

This absolutely constitutes hate speech. Clearly you are very ignorant and you also have no idea of the political ideology of Socialism. This nor recent trends in America lead itself to Socialism. Grow up, educate yourself and open your eyes.

I respect that apology nd agree when he said I view rap similar to how I view comedy. “It’s going
to ruffle feathers at times. It’s going to go too far”

That’s the honest truth when it comes to music period.

  7. DOSSOME July 21, 2013

Awww, now he’s moved and inspired by the passion of people with autism…Now,he wants to learn more about autism…Now people dealing with autism deserve medals, not disrespect…This apology is too PR & only there to “clean up bad press”.A lesson on how to write an apology letter Mr.Cole:-
1.AVOID using the word SINCERE when offering a sincere apology, especially not TWICE.

2.Just apologize and seek forgiveness. This letter only shows you knew all these good things about people with autism but still chose to disrespect them.Stop with the sudden praises, you’re a BORN SINNER though

    • _Krown July 22, 2013

He said he RESEARCHED autism and that’s how he learned all those facts about Autism and knew all about what those affected by it go through. Cole had nothing to lose, he doesn’t have endorsements, the song isn’t on his album or anyone’s (It’s a FREESTYLE) and he has a ridiculously LOYAL fanbase. He apologized out of the kindness and remorse in his heart. He could have easily let this boil over considering most people didn’t even knew he offended anyone. The apology was clearly sincere. It’s not like you supported him before this anyway, just keep it moving.
