d81fdc6a45ea9d4a4a1a26721ac2d1e9 Watch: Mariah Carey Rocks Macys 4th of July Firework Spectactular

Macy’s 2013 ‘4th of July’ Firework Spectacular was chock full of star power with the likes of Cher, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Pitbull all taking the stage.  However, it was the performance of headliner/Pop icon Mariah Carey that seemed to be the night’s most anticipated event.

Lending electric showings of her latest Miguel-assisted hit ‘Beautiful’, ‘America The Beautiful’, and ‘Hero’, the performances come as her first live act since her backing track backlash at a BET Awards outing days ago.

Does Mariah let her multioctave range shine through this time?  Or did she enlist her trusty pre-recording for a flawless redo?

Tell us below:

Much better Mariah!  Thanks for the reminder of your abilities.

IGNORE what Nick said about “best selling artist” @ Suicide.

Oh, and this was partly lipped, not fully. The high notes at the end were absolutely #beautiful.

        I don’t think that’s true.

‘Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand’ are the ONLY three Diva’s who could ever demand such a thing.

        Madonna, to an extent, also.

Thriller was at 65 mark by the time MJ died, it must be now between 68-70, i agree that his sales were inflated probably because he wanted to be compared to The Beatles and Elvis but there is not question that Thriller is the best selling album of all times, i don’t know why his fans insist in such invented sales, as if 65/70 weren’t outstanding, Thriller is the epitome of success. On Mariah there is also no question that she is the best selling female artist of the 90’s but that’s it, the 90’s, if you compared her sales to Madonna, you will notice that Madonna has always been the biggest star worldwide, Mariah could top her in the US but just as Barbra is not bigger than Madonna in the rest of the world, Mariah would not be still the best selling female artist ww, Madonna’s sales in a worldwide scale are only comparable with MJ, Elvis and The Beatles, when it comes to global sales, she leaves any female artist in the dust.

In terms of Global sales, according to Billboard. Biz and other intl’ sales sites, only ‘Madonna, Nina Mouskouri, Yma Sumac, Joan Sutherland and Doris Day’ are the female artists with the most sold records worldwide – 300+ Million each, certified or not.

‘Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis and Pat Boone’ are the best selling male artists of all time – 400+ Million each, certified or not.

Propaganda. Julio Iglesias didn’t sold that much, 300 million my ass, Nina too, she was only a popular in France and Germany i think, and her sales there weren’t are great, some music critics say that her worldwide sales could have not past the 25 million, people think we are really that stupid to belive a non global star has sold more or the same as Elvis, the Beatles, MJ and Madonna.

        @Suicide…

        You’re both correct and incorrect.

Generally speaking, when ‘Worldwide Record Sales’ are taken into consideration, the continents which are, generally, appointed are that of: North America and Europe – and, in some cases, the East Asian regions – specifically, Japan.

You have to remember that ‘Asia’ is a continent with 3 Billion people altogether (India, a country in South-Asia, houses 1+ Billion people alone as does China).

‘Africa’ is a continent with 1.5 Billion people. South & Central America and regions/continents with 500+ Million people and so forth…

It is, indeed, quite possible that artists from their respective country/continent can outsell any mainstream artist from the western world any day.

Madonna has barely surpassed 5 Million units in ‘Africa; 30 years since her debut whereas, Miriam Makeba, a South-African singer has sold a, reportedly, 150+ Million records in Africa alone.

        You see?

Julio Iglesias has sold over 60+ Million Records in Spanish/Portugese Africa alone, so, it is quite possible that he has sold over 300+ Million Records Worldwide.

Idim Mohammad is a pakistani singer and has sold over 100+ Million reocrds in Asia without EVER having crossed over into the Western World.

I believe in this theory and think it is true. ;)

You are also both correct and incorrect since the market in those countries with 1 billion or so of population is very poor, the market is much bigger in countries such as France, Italy or Germany, hence that’s why the US is the biggest market and its population is not even close to the population of India or China, where the market is even smaller than the UK, AFrica is another axample of propaganda, are we gonna pretend that people in Africa buy more records than food.

        True…

You have a point there about ‘Marketing’.

It probably is propaganda, as you say. But, if that’s the case, it makes no sense. By all means, the reported sales of artists, belonging to the Western world, will probably be more reputable than that of an artist from ‘Thailand’ per say, however, in saying that, who do you truly believe?

Madonna is no doubt the ‘Biggest Selling Female Artist of All Time’ from the western world, but only in N.A, EUR & S.A and Australia by and large.

Continents such as ‘Asia’ & ‘Africa’ and the sub-continents ‘Oceania’ and’ The Middle-East’ have rarely contributed to buying her records, but she can tour there because of her extensive global marketing campaigns over the years.

You know? It’s a hard call.

And, remember, not all countries in Africa are famine-ridden. ‘Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Angola and Ghana’ do have large business industries. ;)

        @Jared
I’m not talking only about Madonna but also about MJ and the likes, however Madonna has been even more succesful in Australia than Kylie Minogue, that says a lot, in the Middle-East she is also very popular and, no matter if she sold in Africa 5 million or 0, when you put together all her records sales she beats every female musician by miles, the same can be said of Elvis and The Beatles, Africa didn’t love them as much as AMERICAN or EUROPE, they’re white, you won’t find Africans buying records of white people, it’s a cultural thing but they beat everyone else with their discography sales.

      • July 4, 2013 at 10:42 pm
        JARED (WHITE DUDE) says:
        Vote

        LOL.

Yes, I understand your point, but you can’t exactly say that “Africans don’t buy records of White people” – that is, somewhat, of a biased generalization. By all means, Africans who are educated about the western world and western music, or of whom live in the western world, will of course do so but those who live within the continent may not. To say “It’s a cultural thing” is wrong but what I think you meant to say is that they “aren’t familiar” with many White, western artists – including many famous Black ones also – that is, more so, the case.

Today, there are so many hybrids of African and Western music (Digital Afro-Beat), so they must know something. The same goes for East-Asian music: K-Pop, J-Rock, Bollywood Music etc…

And what? Madonna has sold more than Kylie Minogue in Australia? DAMN. Then again, she has sold more records in the U.K than in Asutralia. :) :) :)

We won´t judge you. But let me just say Madonna is looking absolutely HORRIBLE, especially in the face. It´s a f****** disaster. If you get so much surgery at least you should do it like Cher and look good. If it´s not going to look good on you (everybody´s faces and skin is different) it´s better not to touch it that much. Not to mention her face is so hairy now, and her arms and especially hands are a veiny disaster.
About Mariah: I would say she looks absolutely stunning for her age right now. For her the most difficult thing to maintain is her weight, but she ages so much better than Madonna, especially in the face, and that´s the most important thing when it comes to beauty: the face. Of course she is younger. But you know, I find kind of weird you had to comment about Mariah like that. When she just gave these great performances. Weren´t you saying the other day Madonna outsings Mariah in 2013???????? LOLOLOL Madonna can barely speak for a while if the crowd is too loud. I´ve seen her struggling to finish a speech at some MTV awards a few years ago, not even her speaking voice was able to not break when she had to talk louder than usual.
How is it going in California hun? :)

Admittedly, I was not too much a fan of the ‘Hero’ performance.

However, I am glad that she sung it in the key in which she was most comfortable in and did not strain her upper register in trying to hit the high, belted, notes during the songs bridge.

    She looks radiant nonetheless. ;)

The nerve to say she can´t sing in 2013 and that even Rihanna or Madonna can outsing her… omg haters were really believeing their own hype lately. Just like how those few JLo stans were believing their own hype last May when both women were releasing their singles at the same time. What happened? LOL Now that I´m mentioning them… were are they? Their hate only lasted a couple of weeks lol. Well, probably it was just one with multiple user names, as usual.

Secondly, Rihanna has gotten MORE THAN ONE STANDING OVATION at the Grammy’s and her 1 performance of “stay” at the Grammy’s made it a WORLDWIDE hit in addition with a STANDING OVATION, you don’t get more iconic than that.

Rihanna doesn’t have to prove she can sing to anyone, the fact that she gets STANDING OVATIONS at the Grammy’s prove she is a good singer/performer and Lana is never going to touch her.

Yes, Her songs are more difficult to sing than whitney’s.
    _______

Wait. What? Seriously? Stop it Babe…

    In their primes:

Mariah would have never been able to sing “Run To You, I Have Nothing, I Will Always Love You, Didn’t We Almost Have It All and He/I Believe” with the equal amount of ‘Power, Resonance and Soulful Showmansip’ of Whitney’s voice.

    Just as…

Whitney would have never been able to sing: “Vision Of Love, Emotions, Can’t Let Go, Butterfly and Honey” with the equal amount of ‘Range, Musicality and Versatility’ of Mariah’s voice?

Mariah was a ‘Dramatic/Lyric Colourutura Soprano’ with a much stronger and flexible upper register.

Whitney was a ‘Lyric Mezzo-Soprano’ with a much stronger and weightier mid-register.

BOTH of them have different voices and couldn’t sing eachother’s songs.

I agree with what you just said but I meant Mariah’s songs are more diffiult to sing for the typical singer, for example American Idol Contestants and other amateurs.

In my opinion, Mariah’s voice is much more unique than Whitney’s. For a singer to take on a Mariah song, It requires ridiculous technique and timeing. Whitney’s songs are mainly about sustainability and power (which is more common among vocalists IMO). I’ve been watching these siging comps for a long time and I’ve noticed those trends; They struggled to sing Mariah’s songs and would often nail Whitney’s.

        JARED (WHITE DUDE) says:

Yes, there is some truth to what you’re saying.

However, that’s the paradox and enigma of both Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, in my opinion: Whitney always sung a song differently when she sang in a live setting in comparison to Mariah who always, virtually, sang a song the same when she sung live.

Also, the reason why I think Whitney held back on most of her studio recorded songs, which is why you think they were just about ‘sustainability’, especially in the early years, is because she came out at a time when it wasn’t palatable for Black female artists to crossover – thus Clive Davis made her sing in a ‘White-esque singing style’ in order to sell whereas Mariah, at first, was seen as the ‘White Girl who sounded Black’ so if she sang her songs in an overtly- melismatic/gospel style, it was inevitable that she would sell millions, which is why her recording are much more soulful in comparison to Whitney’s.

Do you see the racialist politics of America?

By the way, you cannot tell me that people “nail” ‘I Will Always Love You & I Have Nothing’? They can barely “nail” ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody & The Greatest Love Of All’. LOL. :)

SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) says:

Yes, I see what you are saying.

I remember when Jessica Sanchez sang IWALY on American Idol and I thought she completely nailed it (she recieved a standing ovation from the judges). She then sang ‘My All’ and she had a real difficult time singing it.

The main point that I’m trying to make is that Whitney’s vocal type is more common than Mariah’s, which is why i believe the latter’s songs are much more difficult to sing.

Imaging Jennifer Hudson or Christina Aguilera trying to sing ‘My all’. I couldn’t even picture that struggle. lol, no shade, but I’m 100% sure that they’d be better off singing songs such as Run to you, Greatest Love of All, etc.

I’ve never been good @ explaining things but I hope you get what I’m trying to say.

Btw, It’s so fascinating how Mariah can transition from one range to the next so effortlessly. I’ve never really seen Whitney do that Tbh.

        @Slayriah…

        Oh yes, I definitely agree.

But that’s what I said before.

Mariah is a “Lyric, Coloratura Soprano” – A very agile light voice with an extremely high upper extension, capable of fast vocal coloratura. They key word here is ‘Coloratura’ – Singers with ‘Coloratura abilities’ can perform vocal runs, riffs, trills and wide octave leaps with extreme ease as rapidity which is why, in general, it is hard for the average singer to sing any of Mariah’s songs because the average singer does not possess coloratura abilities as well as a high, upper chest/whistle register.

The only con is that they lack full, resonant vocal power…

Do you understand what I’m saying.

Whitney, on the otherhand, is a “Lyric Mezzo Soprano” – Their voices are often light, smooth and sensitive but much more rich and heavier in vocal weight which is why they can sustain full notes for longer periods of time – this is common for the average female singer.

So, yes Babe… I think Whitney can’t do what Mariah does and vice-versa. ;)

I´ve been playing The Emancipation of Mimi today in the car. Mainly “It´s like That”. So in the mood for that song today. And I know you´ve always loved it. It´s probably one of the songs I´ve played the most from the Emancipation album sonce 2005. Maybe not among the best in the album, but personally I love it.

If you can sing this well there is only one thing that will force you to randomly lip sing a whole song at an awards show and thats if you have a condition that forces u to.

Of course Lana del Rey is talented. She has created her own style and listening to her songs is so damn pleasant to me. She´s a great songwriter and she is also very involved in her great videos I think. Obviously, she is not good live (in general), but she admitted it the same month she debuted in the music industry. I really like her. It´s her only stan in this site the one creating controversy and backlash.

#Beautiful performance is the best so far, and not only by Mariah but also by Miguel. He has been struggling to do it nice in the previous performances (of course people only focus on Mariah)
Hero: amazing. I even liked her speaking voice and charisma in that little speech before singing the song.
America the Beautiful: damn omg. I though she was not in good vocal condition enough to nail that in the spectacular way she did it in 2005 during The Emancipation´s era. But she really did it again. With 2013 vocals and nailing that? Who else? Only true greats :)

@Pop…I’ve got all 3 versions of “Emotion” ..The original Samantha Sang version featuring Bee Gees is my favorite….I kinda like the Destiny’s Child version as well,it was interesting hearing Kelly do lead vocals for the 1st time

Don´t forget the most juicy of all right now is also a Mariah Carey post (and I barely commented on that one :) ). Mariah is owning. Since early May when the new era began she has been in the top 5 hottest stories of the week in TGJ, almost every week. Of course she´s always there several times in the same week in that other blog… :)

@Pop…Weird???LOL,are you kidding me?The Bee Gees were the biggest music acts in the late 70s..My mum was so crazy about them and The Commodores…You should see how she worships her old LPs…Back then actually for a song to be Certified Gold,it needed to sell 1Million copies (platinum was 2Million) & Bee Gees were still scoring many Gold & Platinum hits in an era people would rather buy albums over singles,so i think your mum wasn’t the only “weird” one :D

Dead at this thread heading for the most juicy…it stalled at 185 comments for hours only for a “certain” lamb to go insane ;-)

well, She Is Weird and her taste is even weirder .

I like them too, yes, i know what do you mean by “worshiping” their LPs, my mother is religious when it comes to “Abba” and stuffs like that, back in the day those people were relaxed and s***, the music was so good and diverse.

she likes diana ross ” which i don’t even like” , Cher/sonny & cher, pink Floyd, Tina turner and the Bee Gees, like you would know how her taste gonna be like with those artists. :)

yeah, this “lamb” is one of my All-time fav tho. ;) ;)

So why didn´t TGJ make their list of hottest topics of the week? Oh yeah Mariah ruled the week, in her 24th year of career, it wasn´t their precious Beyonce or Rihanna, so better not post it right?
