As renown as The-Dream has become for the hits that flow from his pen, he has – in parallel – become notable for his controversial soundbites.
The latest sees the star, real name Terius Nash, once again talking record sales.
Despite being ridiculed by some for the sales of his newest album ‘IV Play’ (which to date has sold less than 50,000 copies — since May), the ‘Umbrella’ writer is not shying away from the topic. Indeed, building on his recent defence of his own numbers, the 36-year-old waxed philosophical on the unique roll-out of Jay-Z‘s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’; roll-out which saw one million copies of the surprise project made available for free to Samsung phone users three days before its “general” release today.
According to Mr Nash, the unconventional approach to the promotion of Jigga’s LP is genius because “album sales are so 1992”.

Granted it’s almost too easy to dismiss Dream’s words on the basis of the sales (or lack thereof) of his own music, it’d be silly to overlook the specs of truth in what he was trying to get at. Indeed, it’s a new age in the music industry; a 360 age. One not as dominated nor dictated by album sales in isolation. For better or worse, factors such as endorsements, brand-ability, and touring all dictate which artists shine bright like a diamond.
Still, for us, sales remain the premium gas that mobilizes the brand. Indeed, without “selling” in the traditional sense before, it’d be near-impossible for Jay-Z to pull off what he is now with ‘Magna Carta’. The industry may be morphing and remoulding itself, yet let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, Mr Nash.

I would agree that this is the case if artists still weren’t selling 500k-1 million first week.
Not many people are doing that these days. Very few. Kanye once sold 900k in his first week. His last album barely sold 500k in its first week. People are struggling to get 2 million copies sold (except Justin Timberlake and country artists their fans are loyal).
Stop making excuses, not a lot of artists were selling that much then. If his albums were going gold/platinum he would be singing a different tune.
Dream is correct. Although I am not a fan of his own music its not all about sales no more. Only you people focus on album sales. Do you know how much the business has changed? But music isn’t gonna sell like it used to, so you put these artist in 360 deal, pop them off, endorse them, put them on tour, tv, soda cans and take their cash. If you’re new, you better use the net and go inde, if you have a name such as Rihanna, Beyonce, Madonna, Janet, then you’re gonna tour. Beyonce is smart, 4 may not sold alot as haters say, but she’s still making cash off of it with this tour. Add an extra $10 on each ticket and there your album sells right there. Sales are mostly based on radio, media and hype, so if you don’t have either its likely that many wont have heard you music to have an opinion or for it to be played enough to catch your ear and get you hooked. Major artists dont pay for promotion because media makes such a big deal foe anticipation that their songs are all over the radio, TV and on magazine covers leading up to and all at no cost to the record company, you can put on the radio and hear the same song being played 4-5 times an hour on some stations whilst some being played never.
Some of my favourite albums have suffered low sales but are great non the less.

Letoya Luckett is a singer, talk show host for Centric, boutique owner, and actress
Rita Ora and iggy Azaela performers but also make money from modeling.
Rihanna, Beyonce, Usher, Britney and GaGa probably make more from fragrance deals than from album sales this year.
Queen Latifah is a former rapper/ actress and has her own Queen cover girl collection and TV production company
Niki Minaj probably made more from American Idol than actual album sales. She is killin it with her KMART deal and acting gigs too.
Kelly Rowland will make about 3 million from her gig at XFACTOR which will probably be more than from her album sales.
Brandy is a singer, reality star, and actress.
Keyshia COle is starting a shoe line and was able to tour successfully even without a gold CD.
CIARA can still tour and will probably rebuild her touring movement this year.
CIARA also may obtain some endorsement or fragrance deals now that she is with a better team at EPIC.
