I understand this is about sales but this category is just ridiculous. If you, and others, believe these are R&B albums, cool.
I personally did not buy any of those albums but each one of these artists had huge hits at urban radio this year making them contenders in the r&b catgories. Rihanna with Pour It Up and even Love Song, Robin with Blurred Lines and JT with Suit and Tie.
Yes these albums all have pop elements but none of them are strictly pop. Maybe Urban Pop or Pop/R&B.
I agree that each album contains elements of R & B and so does Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz.”
Again, I understand WHY they were nominated but that doesn’t change the fact that their nominations are ridiculous.

Compare Ciara’s career to Aaliyah’s career. I’m talkin the first 3 albums and first 7 years for each. What more did Aaliayh accomplish that Ciara has not. Yet ppl are so quick to call Aaliyah a legend and totally dismiss Ciara. Just some food for thought.
I’m not a Ciara or Aaliyah stan, but Aaliyah carved her own lane. She had three multi platinum albums before her untimely death. Idk how many #1 hits she’s had, but her catalogue is pretty amazing. Ciara was hot for a minute but she started to fade after dropping her second album. The only thing Ciara has over Aaliyah is her dancing ability. She’s much more rugged and intricate with her choreo. Aaliyah was smoother.
But if you think about it, Ciara is carving her own lane too. There is no one out right now you can compare her to.
Also, Aaliyah’s 1st and 3rd albums were not multiplatinum before she died. Her sales dramatically increased the weeks after she died. And Aaliyah had some hits but not many number ones.
Brandy and Monica completely overshadowed Aaliyah in the 90’s but it didn’t take away from Aaliyah’s artistic contribution as she was different from both of them. I think people should respect Ciara in the same way.
Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number was certified 3x platinum before she passed. Her self titled 3rd album was released a few weeks prior to her death yet it was selling well. Sales aside, Aaliyah was a quadruple threat. Singer/Dancer/Model/Actress. Sorry but Ciara’s music is forgettable crap compared to Aaliyah’s. Baby girl and Timbalands chemistry was unmatched.

That’s a really good question. I think it comes down to preference, really. I own all of Aaliyah’s albums. I’ve never bought an album from Ciara. Not that I don’t think she’s super talented, awesome performer, and gorgeous. She’s all of this. For me, it comes down to the music.
She needs to deliver a classic album a la “The Velvet Rope.”
I would argue that Aaliyah has a classic album.

IMO Aaliyah left more of an impact with her music. Even before she passed away, her music both old and new (at the time) was in heavy rotation. I own Ciara’s first album and I haven’t touched it in almost 10 years. I still listen to my old Aaliyah albums. Ciara can dance and she’s a pretty gal but her music has been lacking for quite sometime now.

These awards are pathetic. Maybe in the 80´s and 90´s when mainstream music was in great shape they could offer some kind of fairness… but now, the nominations themselves are a joke, it´s like some MTV awards or something. We only have the grammys (and yeah they are not like a Bible and they got worse with the years too, but still, the only decent ones).
I know right, you know it’s a sad era when even the Grammys (which are suppose to be regarded as the highest honor for a music award) is barely respectable anymore. I honestly think we need to wait either 10 or 20 years for change in the music industry because this is just sad.

Why should any awards show nominate Kelly, K or Tamar when Kelly and Tamar did NOT promote their albums properly and K made a basic R&B album. Ciara proved herself an artiist with this album and has the biggest female R&B song/video of the year with Body Party and almost had the biggest female collabo with I’m Out except ppl were still stuck on Body Party when it was released and Blurred Lines, We Cant Stop and Get Lucky were dominating the sales and radio charts during July/August. The Favorite Soul/R&B Female category should’ve been Ciara, Alicia and Keyshia tbh. Keyshia is still promoting her album and is getting paid dust because she spoke the truth about Michelle’s tired, stiff ass. Tamar and K should mostly due their reality shows and Kelly had to drop a song about her relationship with Beyonce to sell TAGG. Ciara and Fantasia were the only female artists who sold off their name and promotional efforts. Stop hating and recognize what it is. Yeah, Ciara sales have started off slow but she and LA are still going to push this album at least til next summer with Overdose, DUI then Read My Lips and her album will sell a lot more. P.S. To the Navy, sell Rihanna to stop selling her album during Black Friday and let’s see how much she’ll without her album being 60% off…
