And The Sales Are In! Katy Perry’s ‘Prism’ Sold…

Published: Tuesday 29th Oct 2013 by David

Consider yourself fan of Pop Princess Katy Perry?

If so, let us be the first to congratulate you on a job well done! For tonight, one week after the LP hit shelves across the USA, the first week sales for her fourth studio album ‘Prism‘ have been revealed.

Why she has cause to celebrate today?

Facts and figures below…

Billboard 200 chart position: #1

First Week Sales Number : 287,000 units.

Marking the highest opening week number to be scored by the ‘One of the Boys’ vocalist, ‘Prism’s sales arrive as its lead single ‘Roar’ makes its merry way to the 4 million units sold in the US mark, weeks after it was certified Triple Platinum for sales of 3 million copies!

Now, while her numbers fail to live up to career bests scored by the likes of Beyonce or Justin Timberlake, they do hum to a commendable tune when put into context.

For, as an act whose been cast off as a ‘singles act’ for far too long, they mark a healthy start to what is shaping up to be her most lucrative era to date, and see her outperform Miley Cyrus‘Bangerz‘, which debuted with 270k.

Commendable, as Perry has earned her sales through the careful crafting and collection of Premium Pop music and a well executed marketing campaign that’s seen her dominate headlines for all the right reasons, fashioning herself a unique brand of quiet credibility by letting her music do all the talking….a skill a number of her contemporaries have struggled to master of late.

A skill, that’s seen Perry star in her very own chart fairytale, giving a number of her rivals no choice but to play the over-analytical   ugly sisters simply unable to compete with Katy’s light, bright and endearing nature.

  4. Giovani October 29, 2013

Hell Yes Katy!! SLAY Why this site stay talking about Beyonce when her sales are not THAT great. She hasnt sold as much as Taylor Swift or Britney Spears first week sales. That M***** looking HO Beyonce need to have several her and her BEY H**+

    • RICHIE_RICH October 29, 2013

What does Beyonce have to do with this post doll? You seem pressed like the other haters.

      • XYZ October 30, 2013

        cause that article mentioned thiefyonce?

    • Anne October 29, 2013

Britney Spears had those sales back when Beyoncé was with D.C. & T.S. is a country artist, a whole different market. Also, in recent eras Beyoncé has outsold Britney & several other contemporaries and Beyoncé’s career best is much higher than Katy’s, the point made above.

      • Nikko October 30, 2013

Honey Beyonce will never out sale Britney… BOMT has sold 30 million world wide more CDs then all of beyonces combined… Do research….. 😉

  5. QUEENHANNA October 29, 2013

Not surprised. Singles artists don’t sell albums.

  6. GAGARULES October 29, 2013

LMAO ARTPOP IS GONNA SMASH THOSE BASIC ASS NUMBERS LMAO

    • BlackOut2.0 October 29, 2013

Yes dear. But tell me something.
BTW outsold TD everywhere but which album do people LIKE more?
BTW only sold because it came off the back of TFM which is why all of its singles sold less and less when people clocked the album was horrible.

I’d rather sell 3 million and have people love my album, than 6 million because i promoted better only to have my album trashed once everyone heard it.

      • Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

        BTW didn’t outsell TD everywhere.
TD: 2.8 million in the US
BTW: 2.2 million in the US

      • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

        LOL TRANSLATION:

I CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH SO I HAVE TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR KATY PAYOLA’S BASIC EXISTENCE.

ONLY A PRESSED FAN WOULD THINK IT’S BETTER TO SELL LESS ALBUMS LMAO

      • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

        BTW=6 MILLION WW

        TD=5.5 MILLION WW

….AND IT TOOK KATY PAYOLA 3 YEARS AND 10 RE-RELEASES TO SELL WHAT GAGA DID IN 6 MONTHS LOL

      • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

BTW wasn’t trashed by critics though. they loved it. And ppl only hated it cuz ppl are over the euro pop dance music. But no one could deny her vocals were good on it.

      • Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

Teenage Dream has passed 6 million b****, update your facts

      • Apologetic October 30, 2013

I Loved TD but Prism only sells beacause it came off the back of TD. (like Mariah’s E=MC2 after The Emancipation of Mimi).

But Prism is full of boring songs – there are no such amazing tracks like on the TD. So this album will go down as fast as an album can.

(And don’t tell me that I’m a hypocrate, but I also think that ArtPop will go down, because it’s not a mainstream album, it’s an underground (sometimes overproduced) party album.)

I like both ladies, but I think Katy did absolutely generic songs on Prism (what a 16-years-old girl usually does), and Gaga made so musch overproduced and over-written (the lyrics) songs for ArtPop.

      • XYZ October 30, 2013

actually, Born This Way did not outsell Teenage Dream…maybe in the first week sales, but it fell off deep after the first week.

In the long run Teenage Dream outsold Born This Way…

  7. Jewell October 29, 2013

So she didnt even get 290 smh… Well done for it being her personal best though but Katy doesnt slay s*** but singles.

    • XYZ October 30, 2013

her album sales tell otherwise… she may not be the best “first week” seller…but in the long run she sells steadily…

  8. RICHIE_RICH October 29, 2013

    Congrats to her.

  9. Luvlee [Lucia] October 29, 2013

    Good for Katy!

  10. Auntie_Jackie October 29, 2013

Good numbers, worthy of the fierce campaign she had. Hope she does well in the long run too.

  11. TRUTH October 29, 2013

    And y’all call Gaga a flop……… I can’t with the ignorance.

  12. MarinasDiamonds October 29, 2013

Gaga will outsell her only because the GP still likes The Fame Monster but I would put money on both their eras closing with more people liking Prism than they do ARTPOP.

Gags tried to sabotage Katy by pushing AP forward but while Roar is selling 3 million, AP has only sold 1 million in the same time. My friend lives in Manchester and she said that all the tv shows have the song playing in the background to help it slay but it’s not doing anything over there. She tried to slay but people are so over her extraness right now.

    • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

      LOL EXCUSES, EXCUSES.

PEOPLE ONLY REMEMBER WHICH ALBUM SOLD BIGGER.

    • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Lies sabotage?. Katy was a terrible album seller from the getgo. Only selling 47k with one of the boys. Lol

  13. Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

I was hoping for 300k but this isn’t bad. Best of her career and the best debut by a female this year so far. I’m not worried tbh. First week sales are irrelevant. Katy is on long terms, as her team outlined before. I mean, Teenage Dream only debuted with 192k and it’s practically triple platinum today.

    • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

LOL AFTER 3 YEARS AND 1000 RE-RELEASES. AND IT STILL HASN’T CLEARED 3 MILLION LMAO.

HOW MANY YEARS WILL IT TAKE FLOPSM TO GO PLATINUM? LMAO

      • Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

One release and platinum by three months.

      • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

        LOL IT’S OK TO DREAM….

      • XYZ October 30, 2013

gosh…shut the f*** up and start giving old men blowjobs, so that you can buy fartpoop

  14. BeyIsKing October 29, 2013

Those numbers aren’t bad. But after the huge success of Roar, the promo and critical acclaim of Dark Horse and Unconditionally I thought she would sell more

  15. christinastherealtalent October 29, 2013

At least katy didnt need any gimmick to boost her sales and they’re all honest

  16. Rosie October 29, 2013

I expected more but it’s great for her anyways.

  17. Navy Nick October 29, 2013

her & Rihanna will always be the singles QUEENS, but ALBUMS: BEYONCE ALICIA JT BRUNO & LADY GAGA will SLAY that chart honey….it is what it is, she only sold 17k more than Miley, I gotta give Miley props, SHE DID THAT!

  18. Antonio October 29, 2013

I can’t with a Rihanna stan calling Katy a singles artists when Rihanna has only sold 25 million albums with 7 albums and Katy has sold 10 million with 2. Prism will definitely sell at least 5 million WW which is high for any artist in 2013/2014. Albums aren’t selling anymore. If the top album artists like JT, Alicia, Usher, Xtina, Britney, Jay, Em and Kanye have experienced huge decreases in album sales what makes Beyoncé stans think she’ll be immune. Super Bowl, H&M, Pepsi, Lo’réal, DC3 compilation album, film, world tour and 3 buzz singles and Beyoncé couldn’t even release an album with all that promo. Hell Mariah scrapped The Art of Letting Go album summer release even though #Beautiful was a US Top 20 hit. Look at Ciara, Body Party became the biggest solo female R&B song/video of 2013 and she had a strong promo pusg but only sold 60k the 1st wk and has only moved 200k WW in 3 months. So Katy’s 287k is actually massive, 10 yrs ago, that 287k would’ve been like 750k easily…

    • GAGARULES October 29, 2013

LMAO DEAD @ ALL THE EXCUSES.

RIHANNA STILL SOLD MORE ALBUMS THAN KATY PAYOLA. DEAL.

25 IS STILL MORE THAN 10 LOL

  19. Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Pretty good, Katy has got longevity so I’m not worries. PRISM is a fantastic album loaded with hits, she’ll do fine.

Teenage Dream opened with similar numbers and sold 5.8 million WW.

Plagiarize this way opened with 600K and sold 5.6 million (deducting 400K fraudulent Amazon sales).

So ya, Katy will win this one too.

    • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Lol. Imagine if she had no hits on the album, these numbers would be worse. Gaga’s album selling power is fantastic.
      #webadyoumad

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

        I can’t wait to see ArtPop’s numbers.

  20. JOHNVIDAL October 29, 2013

    Isn´t this her 3rd album???
Anyway, so Katy and Mylie got all the possible attention this year and kids gave them some of the biggest digital singles sales this year… and still this is all they can do? Not even 300,000, in their 20´s? At their peaks? is this really their all time best sales in a week?
Still sounds good for Katy in a way, It could have been the typical 180,000 copies she or Rihanna use to get other times.

  21. How Many Drinks (Miguels Wifey) October 29, 2013

Not great for all her exposure and that hit she had lets be real now

  22. How Many Drinks (Miguels Wifey) October 29, 2013

And if this was Gagas number the same ppl makin excuses would be dragging her ass for filth!

  23. Stan October 29, 2013

It actually pretty good for Katy Perry… but we all did expect her to do way more I mean singles wise she’s a beast!
But Sam can we stop acting like Beyoncé is this HUGE album seller her last cd 4 didn’t debut that far from these numbers 310k to be exact! And still hasn’t gone double platinum! Let’s just hope she gets back her big numbers & stop hyping her up! But anyways good for Katy… & will see what GaGa does she has the power to go either way!

    • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Gaga is already 500k with pre-orders….so she will definitely beat these numbers easily. Haha.

      • Chola October 29, 2013

Exactly how do you know that?

      • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Read about it online. That doesn’t mean I’m her accountant tho….

  24. Meet S≜∞ (Sterling Infinity) October 29, 2013

    she’s a single artist

  25. CzarM October 29, 2013

Miss me with the excuses and rationalizing.

For someone who is considered to be the biggest pop star in the world right now, whose promotion for this new album has been intense, has a massively successful lead single (and a few more well performing promo singles) and is coming off of an album with a bunch of singles…this number is borderline abysmal, and very eye-opening.

After all this time at the “top” of her game, and all the acclaim/accolades, she should have racked up out the gate sales of at least 400k — which is what early predictions were. These sales just prove that, despite her success, she hasn’t ascended to the A-list and hasn’t built up enough credit with the general public to be able to sell off of her name. She’s seen as just another hit maker, not an artist.

It also, yet again, proves Linda Perry right when she cynically remarked ‘who wants a f*****’ Katy Perry album?’

    • Yeah I Said It October 29, 2013

      Preach

  26. Ju don’t even know October 29, 2013

It’s good for her. But I expected a lot more though.

  27. Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Now, while her numbers fail to live up to career bests scored by the likes of Beyonce or Justin Timberlake, they do hum to a commendable tune when put into context.

This statement is so funny considering Teenage Dream’s US Sales alone give 4gotten’s WW sales a run for it’s money.

    • Yeah I Said It October 29, 2013

Not really. With 5 #1 hits on one album and that flop Tour I would expect her to be where Justin will be with 20/20 experience.

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

We’ll see if 20/20 LOCALperience will sell Teenage Dream numbers.

Justin won’t even see Unorthodox Jukebox numbers.

      • Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

20/20 experience hasn’t even passed 4 million worldwide and he’s on tour. Teenage Dream peaked at 6 million, I wonder if he’ll do the same

      • Yeah I Said It October 29, 2013

It came out in March THIS YEAR and you’re shading the fact it hasn’t passed 4 mill LOL?

      • CzarM October 29, 2013

Am I supposed to be impressed that an album that came out 3 years ago, had 5/6 #1 singles, re-releases and a movie, has sold only 6 million worldwide and is only double platinum in the U.S.?

Justin hasn’t done 1/2 the s*** for 20/20 that was done for TD and has sold at least 1/2 of its numbers in less than a year. Hell, his part 2 album that came 6 months after the first, had a better first week than Prism…with no hits and minimal promotion.

LOL Don’t even try that. Katy and Capitol *wish* she had the album selling strength of JT, but have reconciled that she doesn’t and so they have to cook up these desperate long term strategies to barely break even.

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

“Justin hasn’t done 1/2 the s*** for 20/20 that was done for TD and has sold at least 1/2 of its numbers in less than a year. Hell, his part 2 album that came 6 months after the first, had a better first week than Prism…with no hits and minimal promotion.”

Save it with the excuses. LOCALperience will be lucky to see Unorthodox Jukebox sales and it most definitely won’t even see Teenage Dream’s sales.

Adele opened with way lower figures than Justin but outsold every single one that came out. By your logic, Adele should wish to have the “first week album selling” power Justin has with LOCALperience.

And even then, Justin couldn’t repeat those sales with the second part. Drake can sell 600K first week TWICE, why can’t Justin?

      • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Umm Adele was lucky to sell those numbers cuz ppl was wowed by her voice and talent. We’ll see where her next album goes. Don’t think she will have the same luck after that.

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Just like Gaga can’t see The Fame/Fame Monster era numbers?

      • CzarM October 29, 2013

“Save it with the excuses. LOCALperience will be lucky to see Unorthodox Jukebox sales and it most definitely won’t even see Teenage Dream’s sales.”

In seven months, The 20/20 Experience has sold 2.3 million, is RIAA-cerified double platinum and is the best selling album of 2013. In ten months, Unorthodox Jukebox has sold 1.7 million and is stuck at platinum (and had to be heavily discounted earlier in the year to less than $5 to help drive its first million.) Heh. I’d rather be in Justin’s position.

“Adele opened with way lower figures than Justin but outsold every single one that came out. By your logic, Adele should wish to have the “first week album selling” power Justin has with LOCALperience.”

And after 3 years, Adele isn’t stuck at 5-6 million worldwide, and less than 3 million in the U.S.,…and I’m willing to bet that her next album won’t have an opening week of less than 300k. Bad example, sweetheart. All you did was make Katy look like even more of a failure by bringing up Adele (whose music largely plays on the same CHR /Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations as Katy’s) and is an example of someone who can sell singles *and* albums. Why can’t Katy?

“And even then, Justin couldn’t repeat those sales with the second part. Drake can sell 600K first week TWICE, why can’t Justin?”

Are you serious with this b*******? Did Drake release two albums in the span of 6 months, with 600k being the average for both?

        Let’s compare:
        – JT’s best opening week sales # is 968k with The 20/20 Experience and his second best opening week is 684k with FutureSex/LoveSounds is 684k
        – Drake’s best opening week number is 658k with Nothing Was the Same, his second best was 631k with Take Care.
        – Justin’s lowest opening week sales is 350k with The 20/20 Experience II.
        – Drake’s lowest opening week sales are 73k with So Far So Gone.

Drake’s average first week opening equals out to 452.25, Justin’s average first week opening equals out to 610.75.

        You were saying?

Furthermore Drake’s best selling albums cumulative sales have yet even match Justin’s lowest. So null & void on what you’re talking about, Corky.

LOL@you even bringing up all these other artists names (and having it backfire on you) in a cowardly attempt to thwart attention away from Katy Perry and her s***** album sales. You’re as transparent as saran wrap. You can try that nonsense with some of these other commenters around here, but don’t attempt to shovel it this way.

      • Slayty Perry (Legendary Lovers) October 29, 2013

What type of delusion? The 20/20 Experience slayed Teenage Dream in the promotion category, hands down. Justin had one of the most expensive promo campaigns of the year as reported by Billboard magazine. Girl bye. Part two of the 20/20 Experience had better first weeks but your deluded to think it will outsell Prism in the long run. Same with the original 20/20 Experience which is struggling to keep steam. The album doesn’t have the legs that Teenage Dream had and probably peak at 4.5 million which isn’t bad. Teenage Dream is at 2.8 million in the US, practically 3x platinum. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to get there, the point is she is there. No other artist can take an album and expand its era to last almost 3 years. Justin certainly couldn’t with 20/20. You need an album full of hits, and that’s what Katy provided. It says alot more when an artist can make something last then something that is very popular for a couple of months.

  28. FutureCiara October 29, 2013

Everyone needs to stop living in the past. These are great numbers for this day and age.

  29. Mark111 October 29, 2013

By today’s standards, these are above average sales. If Katy’s contract is right and if she owns her publishing, she’s making more cash off her singles. Look at Pitbull and FloRida, they don’t even have a gold record, but has tones of top 10’s and have MONEY. It’s a singles age, deal with it.

Now, what will Gag Gag and Britney do?

    • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Britney will smash as per usual.

      • Mark111 October 29, 2013

I see Brit doing the same numbers or even a bit lower. Let’s see how the next single goes.

      • Heavy Metal Lover October 29, 2013

        Kii @ ‘per usual ‘

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Her next album sounds ala Madonna – Ray of light according to reports, and Madonna’s – Ray of light is one of the best albums ever created.

Save for the first single, if it does sound like that, it’ll smash. Britney is still huge, 8 albums in. She is a legend.

      • Heavy Metal Lover October 29, 2013

Is that why Femme Fatele flopped so hard?

      • Mark111 October 29, 2013

        @LoveBird

Of C Brit’s a pop legend, but something about this era seems off. I think it’s the Vegas thing. A Brit 1st single not going #1 is saying something.

    • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

I’ve already read some sites saying Gaga is predicted at at least 400k. Now If this is what happens, the haters will die.

      • Mark111 October 29, 2013

I dunno, I think we all thought these girls were gonna smash, but it seems to not go that way for anyone. I see Gaga doing no more then 300K.

  30. Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

OK…. Anyways, Sam u need to post Gaga’s new Glamour magazine cover. It slays.

    • im going numb October 29, 2013

No he needs to post on The monster being number 1 somethin Venus failed to do.

      • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Who is surprised by that? Rihanna always has number 1’s. ppl love hearing her auto tuned voice on records. And being that it is a collab with eminiem, that was expected. besides, considering Venus has no major promo right now, it is still staying afloat. And I don’t care about that. Venus is my least favorite song from Gaga so whatever….

  31. Chola October 29, 2013

I didn’t expect her to do anything more than 300k. She will peak at 4.5m world wide

  32. HOTSTUFF October 29, 2013

this is great!! go Katy !! this album will have longevity. for those talking about GAg, we’ll see for her overall sales not only first week cause Artflop wont have longevity yall can mark my words…. *sips tea*

    • Stop the drama Start the music October 29, 2013

Bish stop it. Katy will have limited longevity. Ppl will get tired of roar, dark horse and all those other basic songs after a while. Ppl already have moved onto bigger hits like wrecking ball and Royals. Katy will have nothing to cling onto after that. She’s boring and basic!

      • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

And yet Teenage Dream is still charting, where is Plagiarize this way?

Lol no. It sold 6 million WW and is probably more now. Have a seat. It woulda still outsold better than perry without the 99 cent deal.

      • Heavy Metal Lover October 29, 2013

But even with the deductions included Gaga has sold more in a shorter space of time smartass!

  33. HOTSTUFF October 29, 2013

single artist but not an album artist ? 287,000 sold, so what are those ? ….y’all need to chill, yes, shes a hit machine but she also sells album. Pitbull or Ke$ha are single artists.

  34. Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Pink did around 280,000 and has had a massive era with over 5 million sold so far, Katy will beat those numbers.

Jay-Z’s Magna Flopga:Basic Grail did what 500K, where is it now?

And Justin’s 20/20 LOCALperience will not see Unorthodox Jukebox’s over 4 million sales even though LOCALperience opened with 1 million and SLAYorthodox WigSnatchedBox opened with 192,000.

    • Lovebird (Britney Jean – 03.12.13) October 29, 2013

Plagiarize this way – 5.6 million WW (deducting 400K fraudulent Amazon sales)

Teenage DREAM – 5.8 million WW

      Have several -> _/

  39. ENOUGH ONIKA (KMART QUEEN) October 29, 2013

I’m not a fan of the album but those aren’t bad numbers. Didn’t Rihanna do like 100,000 or something? Anyway, good for Katy. I just don’t want an album were I feel I’m being yelled at throughout the whole thing…

  40. B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 29, 2013

    Bangerz 270,000
    Prism 287,000

The Queen of Pop only sold 17,000 more copies than Miley Cyrus….

    hmmmmm……..

  41. ok October 30, 2013

Why is everyone calling her a flop? Yeah the album wasnt as good as people were making out but those numbers are quite good. With the exception of Adele no other artists are selling millions anymore. Plus Katy made #1 on Billboard that’s huge.

  42. JER October 30, 2013

    Now I KNOW

    i KNOW

In my heart of hearts, I know I did not see ho’s laughing about nearly 300k sold first week when yal faves entire discography having even sold that(if their album has even been released yet.) Most of yal faves last albums scanned less than pixie dust so remain seated please until called upon.
