TLC Enjoy 200% Sales Boost Following VH1 Biopic

Published: Friday 25th Oct 2013 by Sam

As earlier reported, TLC‘s biopic ‘Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story’ was a ratings smash upon its debut this Tuesday.

According to Nielsen, the VH1 production commanded an audience of 4.5 million viewers, making it the network’s highest-rated original movie. Ever.

The project’s success isn’t limited to the television arena. For, Billboard report that the the feature film has caused quite the spike in sales for the iconic trio.

Details after the jump…

Released on October 15th, the movie’s soundtrack – a greatest hits set christened ’20’ (in commemoration of the number of years the group have been active), quietly debuted at #72 on the Billboard 200 after selling 5000 copies.

However, following the airing of ‘The TLC Story’, the set is reportedly on course to sell 20,000 copies this week — which will likely be enough to secure a top 20 placing on the US album tally.

If achieved, the feat will mark the first time the group have placed inside the top 20 on home soil since 2002’s ‘3D’ – their most recent traditional album.

No bad for a group with as many years under their belts as T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli. Not bad at all.

Needless to say, it’ll be interesting to see if the buzz continues heading into the release of their new LP next year.

They deserve for their innovation and great music in R&B/Pop, in music in general.

TLC is the group that needs to be honored at an BET, VMA and etc Awards show for their tremendous efforts.

TLC is the greatest girl group ever. What other group has 3 different style members and made it work? Even male groups. There will never be another T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli.

YES!! They deserve to win!! You guys should watch “The Last Days of Left Eye.” It’s on youtube. Now that was an eye opening and inspiring self documentary. I love LOVE Left Eye!!

i love left eye but truth be told at one point she stopped caring about the group and but he selfish endeavours first which in turn lead to hear death.

You clearly need to watch her documentary. There’s more to a story than just whats put out in the media. Left Eye was human and was dealing with things that blurred her vision at times. You should watch before you make judgements…

Get it girls!!!!!!! Fans, be sure to buy Fan Mail and later, don’t give money to Pebbles and others who ripped them off. I been blasting their albums for a few years and is glad they’re back in here.

I’ve loved them since I was 9 years old and I’m 31 now. THey were the biggest female group I’ve ever seen and 65 million albums sold with only four 3 1/2 albums is amazing. 3 1/2 due to left eye not finishing the last album in full with the group due to her death. I am glad they have come full circle and are getting the much needed respect and admiration they were always due. Can’t wait for them to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. THey deserve that too

      So true boo.

It takes nothing away from this achievement, but the Supremes sold way more of their greatest hits packages. I was expecting bigger numbers before I read this post.

The Supremes had a much bigger overall cultural impact during their heyday, but I think the lackluster sales of 20 has something to do with the facts that: 1. TLC were big in an albums era (Supremes ruled in a singles era), 2. TLC ran platinum plus with each of their first three albums (so many fans already own their entire discography), and 3. the Supremes benefited from multiple format changes after they disbanded (records, then 8-tracks, then cassettes, then CDs, and now mp3s).

This is ish I am talking about. Now how did your life change or get better by that quote? Do you think the Supremes are worrying that? Or even TLC ? All this comparing is a waste of time!

  18. Sundayluv October 27, 2013

I wish TLC the best of luck. I purchased all their albums except the last one years ago. However I recently purchased “Hands Up” from 3D because its a great song and video is everything. I hope infighting amongst fans don’t cost TLC like it’s done to other R&B artists. STANS are the worst thing to ever happen to R&B music. It’s really sad.
