India.Arie Pens Open Letter Regarding Grammy Awards & Racism

Sunday night’s Grammy Awards were not short on controversy. Indeed, between Macklemore‘s multiple wins, Kendrick Lamar‘s shut-out, and Beyonce‘s racy display, the show continues to dominate headlines two days removed.

It’s a trend that looks set to continue – courtesy of soulful singer India.Arie.

The 38-year-old has penned an “open letter” relaying her frustration with the lack of Grammy love directed towards Hip-Hop and R&B artists; something she suggests is soaked in racism.

India’s words after the jump…

Via India.Arie:

@Kendricklamar WAS robbed, BUT he was not the only one who was robbed. Personally, I was pleased he was able to perform and they KILLED! IT! One of the FEW moving moments of the night for ME.

Though it’s called “Music industries biggest night” the #Grammys are NOT about the music, it’s a popularity contest. The voting process allows people, to vote on name recognition alone – the music industry politics is a whole NUTHER conversation.  Too much to go into here.

The American Music Awards is a show that awards sales and popularity – the #Grammys are SAID to be about the music.

If the hip hop community voted on hip hop –  r&b COMMUNITY the same –  same for each category – we’d see winners that reflect the MUSIC ITSELF. We all know that’s just not the way it goes.

NOW the BIGGER losers, are ALL of black music. Where was the black music community represented in last nights #Grammy show? Performers and Winners (or not) … Where were the black artists?

And this isn’t the first time the #Grammy’s has had a show all but excluding young black America and black artists in general, although we set the worlds musical trends. Why NOT televise the lifetime achievement awards of the Isley Brothers? SURELY they deserved to be on televised stage LAST NIGHT! While other artists were on stage TWICE?

The truth is in a perfect world diversity would matter, and respect would be rampant, but the TRUTH is, The #Grammys is a television show, and in THAT world ratings reign supreme.  So, in general, bigger names take the stage, and sadly the biggest names often times ARE BIGGER drawn along racial lines from the release of an album. i.e. marketing dollars, and just general support.  It’s unfortunate.

I don’t even get surprised any more, but, it still hits my sense of fairness, because I KNOW many of the artists who are overlooked. I LIVE in that world. We keep showing up and subjecting ourselves to the game, hoping MAYBE we’ll win. I was so HAPPY to see @Kendricklamar take that stage – because it is a FORM of winning, at LEAST, he was SEEN.

Speaking of diversity, congratulations to my PERSONAL favorite albums of the year –  @I_GregoryPorter #LiquidSpirit @Realsnarkypuppy and @lalahhathaway on your win and THANK YOU! @pharrell for acting RIGHT in the presence of the greatness that is @Nilerodgers and #StevieWonder

Love to all #SoulBirdsWorldWide

@IndiaArie
P.S. No mention of Nelson Mandela at ALL? … and THIS is why we NEED the Image Awards AND the BET awards.

Didn’t Pharrell Rihanna Alicia keys and Jay z win awards that night so what is she talking about are people really that pressed over Macklemore winning all the rap categories? black people love making everything about race and I’m over it.

  2. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

OMGOD!!!! Im so sick of my peoplke always playing the race card. NIGGERRRS are not gonna WINN every DAMN thing…

Did eople fail to see that A BLACK MAN won 5-6 Grammy Awards last night including ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!

HELOOO Pharelle won ALBUM OF THE YEAR & 4 OTHER GRAMMY AWARDS

    BYE Ho…

Black people complain about EVERY DAMN THING…

Ps. The Grammy Awards is a WHITE CREATED award show BLACKs are lucky to be apart of it…

HAVE SEVERAL SEATS WITH YOUR SKIN BLEACHING ASSS

  3. KangBey January 28, 2014

Of course the grammys are racists!!! Amerikka is racist period.

  4. Metzo` January 28, 2014

    She is so right tho.
India Knows what she’s talking about. She has been robbed multiple times, including when she was nominated for over 6 Grammys and she did not win anything- NONE.

Same with JAY-Z. He was robbed too. He was nominated 9 times, but he only took home ONE award!! How f****** possible?? I expected him to win at least 3 Grammys from 9 nominations, but they gave it all to MACK & Ryan Lewis.

PS: “On the Run part 2” with Beyonce deserved to win best Rap/Sung Collaboration, but they gave it to JT and jay. Bey got Robbed too! :/

  5. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

Sorry for the typos but this b**** TRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIED IT!

How bout we write a letter asking why we never have any Asian people winning Grammy Awards

    Answer this question.

Have we ever had an ASAIN AMERICAN MUSICAL STAR? If we have name 1… Dont worry i’ll wait..

  6. NICKY January 28, 2014

    @Stephy

Who the f*** do you think you are???? it’s one thing to express your opinion, but to do so in an ignorant way is completely dumb on your part.

Who says “n*****” how about you say that to a black person, and watch yourself end up in the ER. oh, yeah i forgot, you are hiding behind your computer. Dumb b i t c h

  7. Molly January 28, 2014

@Stephy omg agreed you never see Asians or Mexicans complaining about not winning s*** blacks want everything to be there way and when its not they scream racism.

  8. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

The Grammy & Oscar Awards ARE FOR & CREATED BY WHITE PEOPLE other races are guest at those award shows..

Thats why we have our own award shows for colored people.

Why haven’t people understood that by now…

  9. kiki January 28, 2014

If that’s the case Beyovverated wouldn’t have 17 Grammys, Alicia wouldn’t have 15, Rihanna 7… Not our fault she failed to win.

But tbh Grammys are not what they used to be, they lost credibility. How can Taylor Swift have more Grammys than Mariah or Christina Aguilera? So happy that they snubbed her this year.

  10. Tisha January 28, 2014

People need to get over the Kendrick Lamar thing and I say this as a fan of his.

Macklemore for who they are – p.s. It’s not white India – two independent rappers who came from nowhere to have MULTIPLE hits as well as songs on topics rebuking the bling, b******, and booze theme currently in hip hop to gay marriage and acceptance and finally FEATURE so much black talent and up and comers that IRONICALLY are shunned by our own damn black superstars is impressive.

Kendrick was in the game and resorted to the age old diss and beef to create a war and attention, Macklemore haven’t done s*** but make music and do it without the push of a label or major industry player.

Credit where it’s due, I give props to those who work hard not just any person with the same skin tone as me.

P.S. Where do you get off speaking on this issue when your own picture is damn near bleached out with all that ‘lighting’?

  11. lovely lamb January 28, 2014

How was Beyonce robbed the b**** has 17 grammy!

  12. lovely lamb January 28, 2014

So were gonna act like black artist like Jayz, Rihanna & Alicia didn’t win grammys f*** outta here!

  13. Kareem Williams January 28, 2014

Kendrick Lamar did not get robbed, he lost people. Point, Blank, Period. Put out some music Indiaarie and go get a Grammy.

  14. lovely lamb January 28, 2014

Doesn’t Kanye have like 18 grammys?

  15. lovely lamb January 28, 2014

Kendrick Lamar lost oh well get over it, its not the end of the world.

  16. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

I can say the word NIGGERR!!!

I am bi racial but in this country 1 drop rule YOU ARE A NIGGERRR in the eyes of the law…

Also, white people call themselves NIGGERSS all the time. Isn’t that for blacks the ultimate revenge to have a word given to them by whites as hatered…

Now whites call themselves the same word that was to down US as a people…

STOP GIVING THE WORD SO MUCH POWER!!!

  17. Brazilian yoncé!!! January 28, 2014

    But ….

    Still love her music
    #Np BROWN SKIN

  18. LOL January 28, 2014

INDIA TOLD NO LIES. BUT OF COURSE DELUSIONAL FOOLS WHO AREN’T BLACK CAN’T ACCEPT THE TRUTH.

  19. Navy Nick January 28, 2014

IF you are NOT black, you really cannot relate. It is sad to say, BUT it is the truth. I am black man, married to a white dude, so please know I AM NOT RACIST! Everything in this world is for white people though, just walk in the mall, look @ the posters, look @ every photo posted anywhere-WHITE WHITE WHITE! This is not just about Kendrick (although Macklemore, himself agrees), look @ Rihanna beating TAMAR, and Fantasia for R&B, like, really?! Rihanna is as POP as they come….it is all about the names, racists? maybe NOT, BUT white people, OR LIGHT SKINNED blacks get it all.

  20. Molly January 28, 2014

Omg @Stephy their gonna drag you in here 🙁

  21. kelly January 28, 2014

    f*** u b****

  22. Ty ty (ghetto gothic dance queen) January 28, 2014

@NavyNick aren’t you a Rihanna fan? you should know she didn’t win r&b category she won urban which she deserved.

  23. Brazilian yoncé!!! January 28, 2014

Its hard being black in this world especially if you’re dark skinned *Side Eyes* Lovebird. 🙂

  24. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

@Molly… I know gurl! But I got my KEYBOARD READY to DRAGGGGG too… Get your popcorn babe..

  25. Lovebird January 28, 2014

Gurl shut up, I like the Grammy committee the way it is.

    – No Grammy for Lana
    – NO Grammy for Katy
    – No Grammy for Nicki
    – No award buying from Beyonce.

And when will people accept the fact that Malckemore is a good rapper?

  26. Deon January 28, 2014

1000% agree to what she is stating here!!!

  27. incognegro January 28, 2014

    OKAY….DELETE THIS FOOL!!!

Just because you are equipped with the false sense of bravery via faceless blog posts, does not excuse your ignorance. Citing archaic (yet extremely ignorant) racist terms and ideologies further convinces me how intellectually stunted you are…before you start tossing around hateful words, in an effort to get attention, at least be intelligent. Check your history. The history of the origin of the word, the meaning of the word, the alternate spelling and usage of the word – how about you do not use the word at all. For clarification the word has little to do with color as it has to do with mental and intellectual capacity, and you yourself are epitomizing the very word that you are using. Get of the internet and pick up a book N*****!

  28. Savannah January 28, 2014

Kendrick did not start any beefs “for attention”. He simply challenged these weak ass rappers to step their game up. He was already platinum by then, so what’s your point? Album sales wise, Kendrick and Mackelmore aren’t far apart. Kendrick sold 1.1 and Mack 1.2. Kendrick’s album scored a 91/100 on Metacritic, while Mackemores was 20 points lower. Kendrick has the critical acclaim whilst Mack has the commercialism. Kendrick deserved the Best Rap Album, but there’s no sense in crying over spilled milk. Kendrick doesn’t even seem to be affected as much as the GP.

  29. My Forehead Tho January 28, 2014

So while everybody is screaming how racist the Grammys are, let’s not forget 2 of the top 3 most awarded women in Grammy history(Aretha and Beyonce) are black. Let’s not also forget all three of the recent artist to break the Grammys record for most wins in one night were black also (MJ, Lauryn Hill and Beyonce)

If anything , the BET awards are racist.

  30. Savannah January 28, 2014

It would’ve been nice if one or two of the nominated R&B artists were able to perform on the main stage because a lot of the performances….excuse me, MOST of the performances were boring. Fantasia would’ve tore the stage up with “Get It Right”

  31. FAF January 28, 2014

No lies. And I’m not mad at Macklemore I’m mad at the committee bc they vetoed Macklemores exclusion that goes to show that the Grammys have their own agenda

  32. Lovebird January 28, 2014

Kanye West said it best, I’d rather be a b**** than a b**** ass.

Malckemore is a b**** ass and will not be winning anymore Grammy’s; even the ones he deserves.

  33. Diamond Princess January 28, 2014

It’s not about pulling the race card or black ppl being ungrateful, it’s about the truth and India like many others spoke it. I haven’t heard anything about Kendrick speaking out about the matter at all, it’s others even Macklemore himself coming to Kendrick’s defense. The TRUTH is the grammy’s does politically discriminate, so does the Oscars, Ama’s, Golden Globe’s and the list goes on. Unless you’re in with the in crowd or pay ppl off like the Carters you don’t stand a chance in that industry. India Arie said it best, they just show up and hope for the best, b/c they all know ultimately who will be taking home an award.

  34. Metzo` January 28, 2014

I wish people could stop with the “Why does this artist *Insert Name* have more Grammys than Mariah and Whitney?
Well it’s because Mariah and Whitney had Competitions!! Nowadays, it’s hard to find a great performer with amazing vocals.

God Bless Whitney. We miss You!

  35. The truth hurts January 28, 2014

    @lovebird
Lana is unbothered, the trailer for maleficent has more views than any of the grammy performances and is quoted by multiple news sources as stealing the show due to Lana’s incredible cover.
Lana cared so little about the grammys she didn’t even bother to turn up even with a seat waiting for her.
She was never going to win pop vocal album , she got that nomination as compensation for snubbed last year. She also had a little to no chance of beating skyfall because anything associated with the word ‘Adele’ automatically recieves the votes.
I can’t at you trying to come for katy and nicki when not so long ago you had them both in your avi and were stanning hard for them. What kind of bipolar mess?

  36. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

I wouldn’t say the Grammys are racist, but I will say that they tend to cater to whatevers hot at the moment. Sometimes they might surprise us, but for the most part they’re predictable. Kendrick’s album is highly superior to Macklemores. I’m not taking anything from Mackelmore because he’s a good hip-pop artist, but he did not deserve the Best Rap Album award. As I stated yesterday, I expected Macklemore to sweep the rap categories, but I didn’t think he’d win the Best Rap Album.

  37. Lovebird January 28, 2014

The real question should be, why does Mariah have so many Grammy’s?

  38. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

    Black People Grammy Awards

1.) Quincy Jones: Winner Of 27 Grammy Awards

2.) Aretha Franklin: Winner Of 20 Grammy Awards

3.) Beyonce: Winner Of 17 Grammy Awards

4.) Michael Jackson: Winner Of 13 Grammy Awards (Including 8 in 1 night & 4 more Grammy Honor Awards)

5.) Kanye West: Winner Of 16-18 Grammy Awards

6.) Jay Z: Winner Of 10 Grammy Awards

7.) Lauryn Hill a black woman with a hip hop album wins ALBUM OF THE YEAR & 4 more Grammy Awards in 1 night…

BLACK PEOPLE HAVE GREAT SUCCESS AT THE GRAMMY AWARDS SO SIT…

Now, lets do a list on Asians/Mexicans Grammy Award shine or wins… Oh wait Mexicans created thier own Grammy Awards cause they never was getting any shine at the REAL Grammy Awards but they didnt complain they just made their own show & kept it movin…

Black People are drama & cry babies…

When was the last time an ASIAN person won an Oscar…

  39. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

I agree with whoever said that Mariah & Whitney had more competition. In the 90’s, competition was TIGHT! You didn’t know who was gonna win because a lot of categories were filled with people who sold millions, topped the charts and had impact. In 2014…not so much….

  40. the voice January 28, 2014

FYI – Sam, ur like and dislike button is not working properly…. u got some racist white people running your sight now???

    Anyway, India a CORRECT.

I am tired of Beyonce, RIhanna & Alcia Keys being the only black women to ever win.

R&B music was not represented well.. Beyonce is a POP R&B act…

If they would have been honoring Elton John it would have been televised.

WHy was Kendrick asked to perform with a white rock band…. Why couldnt he just perform his own MUSIC???

BET awards is no better… they have a r&b pop category but no r&b soul category….

they dont even have a best R&B album category AT THE BET awards…. At least we have soul train awards LOL

  41. Metzo` January 28, 2014

    ————————————
You are damn Right @MY Forehead Tho.

  42. Lovebird January 28, 2014

    @The Truth Hurts

Save it with the excuses doll, Lana has got NO Grammy’s, that’s all I’m seeing.

  43. Diamond Princess January 28, 2014

@stephy tha lambily. You’re so ignorant and hateful but I’m sure you already knew that. Did a black person beat you up or something? Oh btw you do know your fave is half black right? #Dumbass

  44. Brazilian yoncé!!! January 28, 2014

Kendrick Lamar was snubbed I mean that kid has talent and his album was ayt! Best Rap album of 2013 he deserved atleast one award

  45. Lovebird January 28, 2014

    @Stephy

Honey I don’t think Black people should have their own Grammy Awards (peaks at BET Awards and Source Awards).

  46. ashley January 28, 2014

She’s not lying!!! Yes,kendrick was robbed!!!

  47. mimi carey January 28, 2014

Beyonce Rihanna and Alicia are all r &b/ pop acts esp Rih of course theyll win everything a real r&b singer is keyshia cole tamar chrisette michelle but you wont see them win over bey rih or alicia

  48. the voice January 28, 2014

    @ staephy

THis shows u knwo NOTHING about black music or black culture… HAVE SEVERAL SEATS.

WHere are the black artists that dont cross over to the white peoples charts??? PH*CK YALL

Im talking about Fantasia, Keyshia Cole, LALA HATHAWAY, Faith Evans, Tamar, Melanie Fiona , etc… why dont they get a chance to perform like RIhanna, Beyonce, and Alcia…. Was the r&b category even televised this year????

and seriously, u bring up old Aretha. We in 2014

White people are always in denial about racism…

Go have a seat and talke Macklemore with u

  49. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

@Stephy Child SHUT UP! You sound IGNORANT!!! Black people were forced over here, whipped, pulled away from our families and turned into slaves. We have made so many contributions to society over the past 300+ years, but most of the time they are STRIPPED from us! “They” love our culture, but will only support when it’s “their” faces. Why don’t you ask the labels why they aren’t interested in signing Asian or Mexican talent? I’m sure Blacks would have no problem supporting an Asian, Mexican, Indian etc singer.

  50. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

@LoveBird. THE REAL QUESTION IS DID YOU TAKE YOUR MEDS THIS MORNING

    YOUR A CRAZY BITXCH

  51. BIGGESTAALIYAHFAN January 28, 2014

They did win, but what she is trying to say is why weren’t any of those winnings televised. Alicia Keys who won her 15th Grammy was there, they could have televised her winning and allowed to to speak. This is whats wrong with the industry now/today, whether you want to believe or not black music is struggling, R&B, don’t be fooled by the popularity of the Byeonce’ or Rhianna’ if more people spoke up we wouldn’t have this problem. I agree with her 100%, the music industry and these award shows are a joke and it is all about popularity. Oh how I’ve missed the days where the music industry focused on artists with real talent. We have them, but they have somehow become bench warmers. I can only hope and pray that it changes soon. I’m so happy she had the courage t speak up. I more of these artists took a stand then wouldn’t have to comment on stories such as these. Sad! Truly Sad!!

  52. fdfd January 28, 2014

yea and that was in the dam rnb category and the reason they won cause popular

  53. Legendtina January 28, 2014

Several black people won Grammys, what is she talking about? Because a black man lost to a white man in one category they’re racist? Because they didn’t pay a tribute to Nelson Mandele they’re racist? The race card literally has no meaning anymore and is beyond played out. Do you see a white artist complaining that Darious Rucker, a black man, won a Grammy in the country genre?

  54. Diamond Princess January 28, 2014

@kiki everyone who isn’t naive know beyonce and her pappy bought those grammys/nominations. Having a grammy use to mean something now it doesn’t mean s***. Any artist that has more grammy’s than Whitney, Mariah, Michael Jackson, Elvis, and the beatles somethin ain’t right!!

  55. TinaMinaj January 28, 2014

This whole race aspect and the impact it has on so many things is very complex. To pick one side of it and to run with it is a little stupid.

  56. Metzo` January 28, 2014

Every Grammy won, Is a Deserved one. That just means the Music Industry has more respect for you than anybody else, as opposed to when it’s the fans voting who are BIAS.

  57. kyllaw January 28, 2014

But the BET awards have their favs! The same ppl perform and the same for ppl win. Honestly if u don’t have MTV jams the only place for rb music videos is 106&park and they suuucccckkkk. That’s why hip hop and pop music have overshadowed rb cuz there are no outlets for the music like it used to be. Even whispers in the dark play everything but rb.

  58. the voice January 28, 2014

    @ mimi carey

exactly my point… Alicia, Beyonce , and Rihanna are the only black women they ever heard of.

I know they gone vote for them but the Grammy Awards can at least allow others like keyshia and Fantasia to perform.

SAme with HIP HOP … EMinem, Wayne, & JAyz have won … but NAS has never won a grammy…

these people at the grammys know nothin about “non pop” black music

    This is really sad.

Please dont sell out to them KENDRICK… keep doing u.

  59. Stephy Tha Lambily January 28, 2014

BLACK PEOPLE SOLD THIER OWN PEOPLE OUT!!!!!

DO YOU REALLY THINK WHITE PEOPLE WOULD’VE BEEN ABLE TO FIGHT THOSE AFRICANS WITHOUT THE HELP OF OTHER AFRICANS!!!!

BLACK PEOPLE SOLD THIER OWN PEOPLE TO THE WHITE MAN…

    END OF STORY…

  60. Dev January 28, 2014

Yeah, she’s right! The same darn people won for s*** music and the fact that its a popularity contest. There is no way that Alicia Keys album was better than Fantasias! or Tamar Braxton, but she won with her middle of the road generic sounding shouting ass. Rhianna’s unapologetic album? The grammys as always was a mess

  61. Legendtina January 28, 2014

People don’t realize it’s a T.V. R&B is not mainstream anymore. The general public doesn’t listen to R&B anymore, so why would they advertise the winners?

  62. Lovebird January 28, 2014

Gurl Kendrick lost to Malckemore because Malckemore’s music was better; get over it.

These will be Malckemore’s last Grammy’s though because he has shown the committee that he’s a b**** ass.

  63. TinaMinaj January 28, 2014

    @Diamond Princess
The reason some artists will have more Grammies now is because there isn’t as much competition. A lot of artists are just here for quick, recycled, made for radio, singles with no lasting impact or artistry.

  64. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

@Stephy Ok? And? Tell me something I didn’t learn in 6th grade history. Be that as it may, my statement STILL stands hun.

  65. Brazilian yoncé!!! January 28, 2014

Lana Del Rey is unbothered the b**** is pure talent

  66. Lovebird January 28, 2014

In fact Kanye West’s Yeezus was supposed to sweep those Hip Hop/Rap categories clean.

Y’all are just mad a white guy won the rap category, get over it.

  67. Lovebird January 28, 2014

And can someone give me Malckemore’s mailing address, I need to send him a sack of balls.

  68. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

@Lovebird since YOU love to cling to metascore,

    Kendrick Lamar – 85
    Macklemore – 74.

  69. kimbella January 28, 2014

I was saying the other day how Alicia didn’t deserve that grammy but since she’s more mainstream and her album sold more she won. All the popular acts won the the r&b/urban categories. Justin Timberlake, Rihanna,Alicia.

  70. Lovebird January 28, 2014

Kendrick is sticking to the same b****** and whores mantra that has plagued the genre for years.

Malckemore and Kanye are idealists; they are better than Kendrick.

  71. TinaMinaj January 28, 2014

And for once i’ll agree with Hatebird. Kendrick Lamar did not do anything really special on his album. It’s the same old s*** hip-hop/rap has always been about. Macklemore did something new and inspirational.

  72. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

@Lovebird now that I’ve proved you wrong, you’re reaching. Typical delusional LoveBored style. I am almsot 100% certain that you haven’t heard Kendrick’s album because if you have, you wouldn’t have made that statement.

    Kendrick – 85
    Yeezus – 84
    Macklemore – 74.

Oh, and just to p*** you off further more…
    Beyonce – 86.

  73. Lovebird January 28, 2014

    Metacritic =/= Grammy Committee

  74. mimi carey January 28, 2014

Yup beyonce alicia and rihanna are light skin and mainstream so that benefits them in winning regardless how good or bad there albums are btw Alicia album sucked so bad @TheVoice

  75. mimi carey January 28, 2014

I just saw someone say lana del rey was pure talent lmao i never laughed so hard hahahaha.

  76. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

    @TinaMinaj(LMAO)

Kendrick bought REAL hip hop back to the forefront. His album is filled with masterful storytelling. It’s a concept album, not just a bunch of random songs and hits thrown together like most of these artists do. THAT’s what he did differently than these other rappers.

Also, lets not act like White People were never slaves to the royal people in Europe which is why they left & came to America but was too lazy to build thier own country after killing the Indians off..

So, they somehow got in contact with Africans & THE AFRICANS made a deal to sell their OWN people to THE WHITE MAN for a profit & THATS THE REAL REASON WHY BLACKS WERE TAKEN TO AMERICA due to their OWN people…

Listen, I know racism is here & blacks have to deal with it but The Grammy Awards HAS ALWAYS AWARDED BLACK ARTIST…

The Grammy Awards just dont really care for HIP HOP artist. Thats the real issue. But Kendrick LOSS he was not robbed because he is black…

    No Race debate again sigh
    Exits TGJ

  79. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

LoveBored, you crack me up. You’re usually the first to pull Metacritic scores. You said Macklemore’s music was better and I provided receipts.

  80. Lovebird January 28, 2014

    Rose gold babe,

I have Kendrick’s album and I have Yeezus and Yeezus is the best rap album released last year.

Kendrick is a good rapper but stuck to the same b****** and whores formula and did nothing different on his album.

Kanye talked about many things including empowerment, injustice.. Etc.

Kanye and Malckemore are idealists, they did something different; they made an impact and deserve a Grammy.

Kendrick is like Ariana Grande, talented but nothing special in the music.

  81. idgi January 28, 2014

I don’t think The Grammy’s are racist however I do feel it’s becoming a popularity contest and less credible. Black artists have and had won Grammy’s so I don’t know what she’s taking about.

Wow. The N word stemmed from hatred on black people and I can’t at people in general defending the use of it. For a lot of people who are attacked and killed due to racial hatred that sometimes is the last word they hear. Its disgusting that ignorant, obnoxious and stupid people still use it and the defend the using of that word. Dumb af

  82. Diamond Princess January 28, 2014

Oh and speaking of artists who were on stage more than once… Why was that B**** Lorde even there?!! Because she tries to sound intelligent/depressed in her songs? That chick talks so much s*** about pop culture yet allowed Rick Ross to do a remix on her song and was tickled to death she met beyonce. Girl Bye! That’s what ya’ll call real music? This generation is so lost.

  83. Lovebird January 28, 2014

    By the way

    Yeezus – 46 critics
    Kendrick Lamar – 36 critics

    According to Metacritic.

  84. RIhanna Lately January 28, 2014

This irrelevant pathetic biitch is stupid typical African American R*** Rejects always pulling the race card. Thank god the white man won can’t stand these uncultured, undisciplined fools

  85. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

Awww bless their hearts. “Slaves to royals in Europe” Stephy, you can miss me with that BS! Most of them came over here to escape their religion and in search of wealth and land (which was STOLEN from the Native Americans). But this is a music blog, so I’m gonna stick with the topic at hand! Kendricks album was superior. End of story! And to act oblivious to the fact that R&B/music of black origin is slowly but surely being phased out is foolish! Why weren’t ANY of our categories televised? At least last year they televised Best Urban Contemporary, but that was probably only because Frank Ocean won and he fit the “gay agenda”.

  86. RIhanna Lately January 28, 2014

I think African Americans are worst blacks you can ever find in this world.

  87. RIhanna Lately January 28, 2014

African Americans are nothing.. No culture, No discipline NOTHING @ all. They always pull the race card they forget that they are slaves

  88. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

Yet his album was critically acclaimed by almost everyone! There was nothing typical about his album. Like I said, he brought REAL HIP HOP back. His storytelling trumps everything on Yeezus and definitely on Macklemore’s album.

  89. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

@Rihanna Lately yet you stan for an Afro-Bajan who is connected to African American culture? Lol stop trolling babe. 😉

  90. Lovebird January 28, 2014

So b****** and whores is real hip hop? Thank God Kanye and Malckemore are changing hip hop.

  91. TinaMinaj January 28, 2014

    @Rosegold
Maybe I’m wrong. Didn’t listen to either of their albums in their totality but from the singles that were released, didn’t catch much of this masterful storytelling from Kendrick. He chose a bunch of basic ass songs to promote. His own fault for shooting himself in the foot if his album really was good.

  92. RIhanna Lately January 28, 2014

African Americans should all stfu everything is not good for them. They’re always complaining about everything even silly things.
Maybe they should return back to africa not even africa because africa is much better than them.

  93. ROSEGOLD January 28, 2014

Lmao. Like I said, you do not own GKMC because it isn’t filled with “b****** and whores”. It’s a conceptual album. It tells a story. Kanye and Mackelmore aren’t changing anything, especially when Yeezus flopped and wasn’t received well by the public. At least Macklemore sold 1.2 million lol.

  94. Lovebird January 28, 2014

Gurl I own it and there are songs about b****** and whores.

  95. RIhanna Lately January 28, 2014

  96. Lovebird January 28, 2014

FACT IS The Grammy Committee thought

    Malckemore > Kendrick

    And rightly so.

All those screaming racism should prove their allegations.

    ^ LMAO the lies!!!!

  106. CzarM January 28, 2014

People don’t like it when the truth gets told, and India told the truth.

The Grammy’s were a sham. Macklemore is about as hip hop as Donald Duck; anyone whose heard two songs of his versus two songs of Kendrick’s knows who had the superior album. Hell, even Macklemore’s corny ass knows he didn’t get that award justly, and that it was an undeserved win.

And as far as those R&B legends not having their honors televised, well hey if you accept back-of-the-bus treatment, then I guess you deserve it. The Isley Brothers should have declined to even appear at the ceremony if they were going to be treated *that* shabbily.

Back in the late 80s, the Grammy’s tried to pull the same nonsense toward the Hip Hop acts they called themselves trying to “award,” but refused to televise it…and a bunch of Hip Hop acts — including the nominees — publicly boycotted the show. These R&B acts need to do the same thing. You don’t accept unfair treatment with a smile, because all that does is enable it to continue.

Yeah, the Grammy’s are indeed wack and this past show killed their credibility.

  107. Rihanna Lately January 28, 2014

I am a native Caribbean and I’d rather be with africans, Asians, White than yall. The hate you guys have on us is unbelievable.
I saw an African American beating up an Island girl because she torn her shirt mistakenly. From That day I lost respect in yall. You people are all ghetto and messy

  108. fdfd January 28, 2014

yes the grammy’s are races because they didnt let any of the rnb singer like Fantasia and Tamar Braxton perform and this year they didnt even televise it on the internet and dont give me this s*** saying people dont listen to rnb cause thats b******* millions still love rnb

  109. Rihanna Lately January 28, 2014

I stan for only ONE biitch in this industry that’s ICON rihanna. No one else.

  110. FAF January 28, 2014

@Metzo but the GOOD artists dont have the # of grammys as the s*** ones, thats the issue

  111. fdfd January 28, 2014

and Fantasia and Tamar Braxton was robb in the rnb category both there albums was way better and more rnb then Justin T and rihanna they only won cause there popular

  112. Rihanna Lately January 28, 2014

I think Macklemore is better than Kendrick, Jay Z etc
They speak about issues that are happening around the world.

  113. DD1G January 28, 2014

India was 100% spot-on with her assessment.

In the meantime, it’s quasi-hilarious seeing Macklemore run around like a headless chicken over his undeserved award. It’s as if he KNOWS that the Hip-hop community already didn’t take him that serious and if he doesn’t humbly speak up about the politics behind his biased and superficial win that a career backlash against him will ultimately ensue, and another Vanilla Ice he becomes.

Kendrick is sitting pretty. All this is benefitting him more than that Grammy would have.

  114. Rosie January 28, 2014

There is something really fishy about Kendrick not winning though. However, many legends have never won a Grammy, they always go for the most mainstream and trendy artists at the moment, just like how they jumped on the Daft Punk bandwagon by giving them 4 Grammys.
If I was a real artist who was serious about my craft and not focused on popularity and awards then I wouldn’t care less about the Grammys. They’ve been a joke for a while now. They’re only slightly more prestigious than a VMA at this point.

  115. D January 28, 2014

Kanye has 21 grammys. The most for any rapper. And the reason the grammys are terrible is because they don’t even air the urban catagories. And they all won those from urban catagories and nothing else.

  116. TheHive January 28, 2014

And she still mad and in her feelings that she aint win nothing. Always cryin cause she aint win a grammy and tbh her music borin as s*** anyways Kiii. Girl Bye!

  117. Savannah January 28, 2014

India Arie has four Grammys already. I’m sure she’s unbothered.

  118. Nicki owns me January 28, 2014

@Savannah she’s clearly bothered by writing this s***.

  119. JDE97 January 28, 2014

Obviously the ***ISSUE*** bothers her. Since however India Arie has won Grammy’s for her work before, I doubt that this is some kind of embittered slant because she feels professionally snubbed like “TheHive” basically said. Hell, was she even nominated for anything this time? She’s upset at what the Grammy’s have become overall and what this past ceremony largely symbolized. Legitimately so. More artists need to speak out against what the industry is becoming. I hope this issue of bigotry and favoritism continues to be talked about.

  120. Savannah January 28, 2014

    *looks at your username*
    *walks away*

  121. music January 28, 2014

@Dev you’re right it has become a popularity contest. India arie has a point. Grammys may not be completely racist, but they only have certain Black artists they favor like Beyonce, Alicia and Rih. dont get me wrong I like them but I like listening to other people and seeing other people perform too. Fantasia and Tamar should have got some awards. they didnt even televise the R&B category this year.

  122. DIGGER BEY January 28, 2014

Spill that Hot Boiling Tea India! We need more artists like this. I didn’t even now Macklemore or whatever his name had one every rap catorgory. Well mostly all of them smdh. Anytime an white rapper has commercial success in the pop world. Look for they ass to get 5 to 6 grammys. Even though they don’t deserve them. Kendrick should of got best rap album! I do like how Macklemore took non clubbling, non drinking and non girls girls to the top of the charts but that doesn’t scream Grammy winning. People need to STFU about oh KING B and Alicia has so many. So what. That’s a fawkin cover up. When was the last time a black artist was n all top three catorgories? Taylor ass is always nominated for album of the year smh. The Grammys has lost so much credibility. They’re just like how Patti described these females of today being called a Diva. ****Sidenote**** I WISH SEEETHING H*** WOULD PROVIDE RECEIPTS OF THE QUEEN BUYING GRAMMYS*****

  123. DIGGER BEY January 28, 2014

Ridiculous @ JT and Macklemore winning the Rap and R&B catorgories. I also understand R**** won over people like Tamar Braxton? WTF! #HANG IT UP GRAMMYS

  124. Beyond Amazing (Cause Bey really is!) January 28, 2014

The grammys are trash. I really wish all black people would stop supporting them. But that’s to much like right. Yes, even my fave Bey needs to be threw with them. They really don’t give a f*** about her. She’s just there go to token black, shes what they call “save”. Ugh we will all show up to the Grammys, AMA’s, Billboard awards, Mtv awards and etc but we won’t show up to the Bet awards, NAACP awards and Soul train awards. We gotta do better. Support the people that are for us and not the people that aren’t for us.

  125. Beyond Amazing (Cause Bey really is!) January 28, 2014

    “safe”

  126. JER January 28, 2014

Still pressed she lost all those grammys to Alicia Keys i see. Was that racism too? It’s always an excuse with india arie why she’s losing

  127. K January 28, 2014

alot of people over the years people thought is going to win and didn’t,they have to cut there loses and move along,Drake got knock[even though won one now]back in the day Nicki got knock, look and f-cking nas dude never wins a grammy and look how much albums and classic he put out. and i never hear no one took up for them, but now this f****** lamar get is clip some people getting all up set writting letters.look how much grammys kanye west won 21 if i am not mistaken, and he is a black man so how does racism come in to play, some people just loves to use the racism card when it convenient for them.

  128. Rodd January 28, 2014

You people are dumb apes. India does not care about winning Grammys; she already has 5! Where’s the diversity? Why don’t they air the urban categories (or at least two) or the Latin categories? We contribute to music also. I’m Latino and India told no lies. Why can’t we have the same exposure as the others. I’m Hispanic and we stopped watching that b******* a long time ago. Go india I love you and your music!!

  129. DIGGER BEY January 28, 2014

You’re right @Beyond. They only used THE QUEEN to get high Ratings! On The Run was way better than Holy Grail. Lmao @ One of their “in crowd” turn down a performance. The facts are Macklemore shouldn’t have walked away with those Rap Catorgories Grammys.

  130. K January 28, 2014

    you are a f-cking hater.

  131. Slayretha Franklin January 28, 2014

I wouldn’t call them racists, they just don’t recognize great talent its all about sales. Back in the day when R&B/Soul records actually sold they would air performances of R&B singers on tv. But today R&B/Soul is pretty much dead. There are small traces of R&B/SOul in hiphop but for the most part its dead.

  132. Slayretha Franklin January 28, 2014

India Arie is not a great Soul singer anyway.

  133. Slayretha Franklin January 28, 2014

HOWEVER, the grammy awards were RACIST back in the day UNTIL the Queen of Soul (All Hail) ARETHA FRANKLIN came along. Prior to 1967, all black artist, male and female, all genres, were nominated under ONE category. When Aretha Franklin took the world by storm in 1967 with her mega-hit album “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” the grammy panel had to HONOR & recognize the queen for her record breaking success. So upon the Queen’s request, the grammy committee established best Female & Male categories for R&B music. This included Best R&B Song, Album, & Group/Duo. Just dropping some history for you young folk!

  134. Slayretha Franklin January 28, 2014

This is why the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance was known as the Aretha Franklin Award for years! She won in this category every year from 67-75′.
    BOW DOWN BITCHEZ!!!

  135. Rodd January 28, 2014

India arie is an amazing artist! Her music is inspirational, uplifting and therapeutic not the same ol heartbreak, sexing and clubbing stuff everyone else sings about.

  136. DIGGER BEY January 28, 2014

Um…..@K I assume u were talkin to me but NO hater here. Just a realist u spills the tea like India. Thrift Shop wasn’t anything worthy of a grammy. They just screwed the sh*t out of Kendrick Lamar. Who in The Hip Hop Community is talkin about Macklemore over Kendrick??? No Damn Body! Macklemore shouldve sweep the pop catorgories because that’s where their music was. Why is it everytime a white rapper finds success and top the Billboard charts. His ass will more likely run the rap grammy catorgories. If Kendrick was white, he wouldve took home some of those catorgories. Like i said, who in the hip hop community is talkin about Macklemore over Kendrick? This s*** is ridiculous. The Grammys are always throwing white rappers n those catorgories and they end up winning. The same with the pop catorgories. Katy and Ri makes the same generic music but why does Katy get the pop nominations. While Ri settle with the Urban catorgories. The Grammys need to get they s*** togather. Black artists need to boycott they ass next year.

  137. ~The arcade~ January 28, 2014

Some of you guys did not accurately “READ” her statement… she specifically said “it’s a popularity contest” and that, the way in which they vote, is purely based on “name recognition alone”. Meaning, they don’t consider “BRAND NEW” hip hop and r&b artists(which primarily consists of black people)…

So all this chit chatter about Beyonce &co. winning in the past is null in void!!

  138. Bey Fan January 28, 2014

    I see everybody’s point to an extent….

Im just trying to figure out when was the Grammys ever not about popularity when it came to performers??? The artist who were popular that year should be the artist that are performing. Its always been like that…

Now as far as the giving out of Awards…. we all have our opinion. Sometimes we feel they get it right, sometimes we feel they don’t…. everybody is not gonna agree on who should and shouldn’t win awards…

  139. Jeff January 28, 2014

I really blame all this on the black artists themselves. Black artists are so quick to put a WHITE person on their music or doing features on a White artist song. This has got to stop. NOW!! Example Emiemn & Rihanna, Parnell T.I. with Robin Thicke. Back in the day white people hated rap music. Now white artists want to rap every change they get. Now did any of you know that the Grammys had some rap artists performing but they cut it out.

Also back in the day we had many artists on the R&B charts at one time. Everyone was making money. Now days there is only Rihanna & Beyoncé. Something is not write with this picture. ITunes is another fraud. What ever happened to just going to the store and buying a cd. I myself boycotted the Grammys because I knew it was going to be an unfair and white affair.

  140. ~The arcade~ January 28, 2014

Oh, and I had NOOOO idea that The Isley Brothers were honoured that night… *pitiful*

I really do hope the Grammy committee received lots and lots of complaints this year, because this is just ridiculous. SMH

  141. Jess January 28, 2014

Rihanna Lately has really lost her cotton picking mind. Idk what nationality you are! Your ancestors came from the same S**** SHIP as mine you f****** Uncle Tom. At the end of the day, your ETHNICITY is still BLACK just like the rest of ours. Those whites, hispanics, and Asians that you speak of, don’t see you as any better. You are still black and the self hatred that you have is just making you look bad. We are all in the same boat, now sit your step and fetch ass down!

  142. Jess January 28, 2014

Macklemore better than Kendrick Lamar? Wtf? B****, Kendrick is the better lyricist hands down. Idc how popular Macklemore is, he didn’t deserve all of those awards. Kendrick, Jay, Drake, and J Cole ALL have better flow than him! Madd City and Born Sinner>>>>> Whatever the f*** Macklemore is talking about.

  143. onelove1814 January 28, 2014

@Lovebird I agree yet disagree with you about the fact that those girls you mentioned, especially Lana Del Rey, didn’t get a Grammy nor were nominated enough. Hell, even Rihanna wasn’t given as many nominations as she deserved. When it’s all said & done India has a point. Race is what this all comes down to sadly. Everything in this country is politically & racially biased. Whether you want to admit it or not P.O.C(People of Color) & other minorities, including Latinos(although they have their own Grammy awards) & Asian will forever be snubbed by a system that isn’t made for them to win. Given that I like both Kendrick Lamar’s & Macklemore’s albums, Kendrick should have won. His album is a story. When was the last time you heard a rapper tell a story in a song that wasn’t about s**, drugs & money? Macklemore made more pop friendly records that would reach a wider audience because of that. I am not taking away from the album(Neon Cathedral is my favorite tack off of the album) nor his talent but when it comes down to content & both albums albums in general, Kendrick’s is still better.

  144. DIGGER BEY January 28, 2014

Macklemore only leads Kendrick by hit singles in the popularity contest. The Grammys are just messed all up anyway. By popularity, Kendrick still wins! Macklemore even isn’t popular in the Hip Hop Community. The whole thing comes down to race and India also said race plays a lot n the winners. So u clearly didn’t get where she was coming from. I thought they stood for talent. Kendrick performance STRAIGHT SHITTED ON Macklemores!

  145. Tyler January 28, 2014

The Grammy’s, American Band Stand Awards, Billboard Awards, Ama’s, VMA’s; hell even the Oscars are racially biased! They have always been. That’s how The Soul Train and BET awards came about in the 1st place!

  146. xedos January 28, 2014

when Kanye talk you all freak out. as kanye said he won over 20 grammys .but never in the umbrella category. beyonce have 17 none in the umbrella category. do you think if Lorde was black she would even nominate much less win in the umbrella categories? The white artist can win in the black category, but the black artist never wins outside the black category. Prince never win an album of the year look on his catalog . Pink performs 2 songs while you have black artist who could not perform one. Black artist create the music, but white get to represents it to the world. its the 1950’s and 60’s all over again

  147. xedos January 28, 2014

she never won in the umbrella category.

  148. xedos January 28, 2014

he won it because he produce white artist. if daf punk was black their ass would only get nominated in the black category. history repeating itself. you youngins don’t know music history. elvis biggest hits were written by a black guy who he never met. the grammy is and has been playing the race card. white people love black culture, but only when done by whites.

  149. GOGO January 28, 2014

THe Grammy Awards are not accurate PERIOD!! People vote for categories they know nothing about therefore they vote for the most popular song or artist they relate to mostly based off of skin color (white. Therefore they have not listened to all of the songs nominated to correctly pick the winners and how can they vote in a category they know nothing about? The Grammy Awards is a façade and is NOT real or accurate. Its a bunch of racist, white men who constantly want to portray the white man as the most crafty on what is actually BLACK PEOPLE’s MUSIC!! Respect to MACKELMORE!!

  150. GOGO January 28, 2014

We all know that that Rihanna, Jay Z and Beyoncé win grammys based off of NAME RECOGNITION…

These comments posted here make me completely sick, Ignorance is rampant among our society. I am so ashamed, but not surprised.

The day and age we live in is absolutely disgusting, darkness and ignorance is trying to take over every corner of the Earth.

  153. Jeff January 28, 2014

We really need to support BET, Soul Train, Image, Black Girls Rock AWARDS shows and give them the rating. We as blacks are so busy calling these awards Ghetto and all they are doing is promoting the black music in general. We must call these radio stations and demand to hear your song. You don’t have to always pick just one artist, do many as the site allows.

Tyler Perry have a great show on it’s second season The Haves And The Have Nots on the OWN station airs at 9:00 Tuesdays. GREAT!!!!!!

  154. Jeff January 28, 2014

One more thing I am so pleased that Drake & Chris Brown are on good terms now. White people the media wanted to keep two brothers against each other and they both make good music. STOP downing our black music and start supporting it. White people see how a black person turn on each other while you NEVER hear them going against their own kind. This s*** that the Grammy pulled Sunday night was a BIG slap in the face to the music that a black artist makes.

Twelve Years Of S**** was an excellent movie. It show you how the white man tricked this black man whom played music to get a good better job but instead they capture him and made him a s**** stole his music ideas also.

  155. J.E January 28, 2014

We all know that grammy is now a popularity award. That’s why Xtina can’t get another Grammy award again. Xtina, Mariah, and Whitney only have 5 Grammy. I’m ok at Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis winning those grammies.. Cause I love their songs..

  156. mk January 29, 2014

there u said nit. grammys are white created awards show….u backing arie ‘s claims but u r a fool to realise that. don’t know why the still bother to create R&b and hip hop categories……grammys take the award for the most racist award show

Speak India yes. Giving a few black artists a whole lot of Grammys doesn’t make up for the fact that there’s something flawed about the entire Grammy voting system.
