Madonna Sparks ‘N Word’ Controversy With Instagram Comment

Published: Friday 17th Jan 2014 by David

In recent years, Madonna‘s ‘controversial nature’ has leaned towards ‘altruistic’ territory- using her star power to defend the likes of Malala Yousafzai and Moscow’s ‘Pussy Riot.’

Unfortunately, in a move that some are already billing an attention-seeking ploy, the ‘Like a Prayer‘ performer has sparked controversy today, by using the ‘n word’ in a comment she left on Instagram minutes ago.

Why the digital community are up in arms this afternoon?

An unfortunate message below…

madonna-nigga-that-grape-juice

With a press release denying the icon is a racist and reinforcing her long-running ties to the African-American community imminent, we’re sure this foolish but conveniently timed remark will do very little to dent the icon’s public image.

That being said, there are many who find themselves repulsed by her decision to use ‘that word’, demanding answers we doubt anyone in her camp is currently prepared to answer.

So, let us know…

What do you make of the remark?

She might be racist, but pls grow up old lady…and then that other blacks hating black girl will hit the stage with her at the Super Bowl SMH
Real illuminates, just there for pure destruction of God’s orders

  2. Paula January 17, 2014

Sorry if I’m wrong. But I hear this word in songs, television ect
On a daily basis. Is it only acceptable when a black person says it?
I feel like the N word has zero meaning anymore anyway because
It is used so frequently in today’s media. Get over yourselfs people
It’s 2014 for gods sake. If rihanna had posted this no one would have looked
    Twice.

  3. Mike Galacos January 17, 2014

This dried up old mummy will do ANYTHING for attention so who is shocked really?

  4. Unbiased January 17, 2014

Madonna whyyyyyyy??? I guess that Grammy rumor is true. You know she loves controversy. But, NO MA’AM. Paula Deen got chewed up, you are no exception!

  5. RatchetRasheeda January 17, 2014

The fact that yall had this up 12 minutes after she wrote it is insane to me.

  6. Gagita Maraj January 17, 2014

I don’t understand. How did you write this article so fast?

  7. AubreyOSlay January 17, 2014

LMFAO. What kind of magician s*** is this though? The old h** JUST wrote this comment and there’s post on it here already? Get.Them.HITS!

  8. ItsGagaYaBish January 17, 2014

Just confirms she will do anything for attention.

  9. Unbiased January 17, 2014

Oh pls with that excuse “Black people say it, so white be should be able too”..BYE! She should not have said the word, no excuses. If this was Miley, people would rip her a part!

  10. NataliaThrils January 17, 2014

    Two things are confusing me.

    1. Does this witch think using that word is ok?
    2. Does TGJ have the same thing Raven has where they can predict the future? Because having an entire article ready minutes after she wrote the comment is a little weird to me. Far too fast.

  11. BeyBeyKing January 17, 2014

White people aren’t allowed to say it because of the context behind white people saying it. It’s very simple and if you don’t understand it you should read a book.
Oh and by the way, That Grape Juice just won the award for being the fastest blog on the planet.

  12. KissesForMya January 17, 2014

12 minutes after though? Y’all really be slaying.

  13. Jess January 17, 2014

    @Paula

Oh please, cut the b*******! I don’t think that anyone should use the word but unfortunately, its still used amongst blacks. So yes, it is only acceptable when a black person uses it. Usually exchanged between friends or “homies”. Its become a part of our culture. So why would Madonna or any other non black person want to use it? Its just a dumb as me calling someone else “essay”, when I’m not even Mexican.

If you know that people will be offended by it and if you know that it was once used, for centuries, by whites to demean blacks why tf would you want to use it?

Every subgroup has its own slang and “insiders”. You’re not apart of our culture. So why not be content with simply not using the word?

  14. BrunoMartian January 17, 2014

And people wonder why black people say racism isn’t dead. It’s alive and kicking, the only difference is is that people who don’t suffer racism want to pretend that it no longer exists.

  15. BeachHouseBritney January 17, 2014

I’m not even dealing with how fast this website is.

  16. FutureCIARA January 17, 2014

    ATTENTION W****!!!

    Grandmadonna your stunts are stale!

I have your number you old decrepit b****!

  17. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* January 17, 2014

Madge Knows What She’s Doing, That’s All.

But Going as far and Using The N Word is Disrespectful, But That is Madonna Folks, she has nothing sacred By The looks of It.

Being White and Using This Word is Always Calling for Trouble.

I don’t Put Anything Past her, it’s Grammys coming Nearer and She had to Stir Up things to put her name out there, now every blog, every website will be talking. 😕

    So LOW.

  18. FentySoSnatched January 17, 2014

Look who finished cleaning the cobwebs out of her p****. #OAPAuthenticity

  19. CiaraTheFemaleMJ January 17, 2014

Beyonce is a fool if she agrees to perform with her next week.

  20. FutureCIARA January 17, 2014

This is just looking for accusations of being called a racist…….

  21. RiriRoyale January 17, 2014

    Old broomstick having heaux.

  22. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 17, 2014

And the promotion for Madonna’s new album/era has begun.

When will you ho’s understand how this woman works….

  23. VisionofMimi January 17, 2014

Beyonce does whatever she can get away with so she’ll perform with her alright. Remember the time she performed President Iraq War Bush?

  24. Jon January 17, 2014

Madonna’s ignorant, but y’all sit up here and make jokes about the dead, make fun of peoples children, &
say racist s*** on a daily basis..Hypocrites! And why is it only a problem when a
White person says it? That’s racism! It shouldn’t be used full stop by anyone! Ever.

  25. Slaydele’s Grammys Though January 17, 2014

She think she’s getting people’s attention but all she’s doing is making people angry. People will accept anything nowadays as long as it’s not against gay people or Black people. If she thinks it’ll sell records she’ll pretend to be homophobic too. I despise her.

  26. BarbzRUs January 17, 2014

I feel sorry for her children. Imagine having an actual witch for a mom.

  27. NadiaMaraj January 17, 2014

Feeling brave are we? Say something about Muslims and see what happens.

  28. My Forehead Tho January 17, 2014

If Rihanna, Keyshia Cole, or Nicki Minaj used this same comment word from word, would it be a problem?

Said it before and I’ll say it again, non-blacks saying “n****” doesn’t automatically make them racist or bigots. It’s usually always the opposite- those who oppose people using a word because of their skin color/race are the true bigots.

Eminem, Macklemore, Madonna etc should be allowed to say “n****” the same way Jay Z, Kanye, and Rihanna can. As long as they’re using the word as a term of endearment and not derogatory one, tf is the problem other than their lighter skin?

  29. NaijaQueen January 17, 2014

    Imagine the conconbility.

  30. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 17, 2014

Why should Madonna “Grow Up”. She is worth 1+ billion dollars. She aint got to grow shitt.

Madonna has already GROWN UP. Infact, she is past grown. She is a Queen. A wealthy one at that.

Madonna have s** with men she could’ve gave birth to. She shows her cold sore of a nipple live on stage. She makes songs like “Give Me All Your Love” as if she is still 15 years old. And you want this woman to GROW UP…

Hahaha… Why grow up, when her childish behavior has made her a BILLIONAIRE & relavent in a YOUTHFULL industry for over 30+ years…

Madonna knows exactly what she is doing. She is a master at it… Also, her son is growing up to be a fine young man.

    Hopefully, he is gay…

  31. Molly January 17, 2014

No surprised Miley will say it next.

  32. MCThePlaceToBe January 17, 2014

You seem a little mad Madonna? Broomstick insurance on the rise?

  33. Monica January 17, 2014

Every second word on the comment section has “f*****” “homo” ect in it which are used to hurt people.
Madonna said this word (which she shouldn’t have) not to hurt anyone but was probably joking around
And people are losing their minds. There is something very wrong with this world.

  34. TruthAboutPink January 17, 2014

Trust a Beyonce stan to think having billions make you exempt from having morals.

  35. Chris January 17, 2014

The fact of the matter is, black people basically give others license to call them n**** by using at as a term of endearment among themselves… I can’t be mad…

  36. OVOBarbie January 17, 2014

I don’t expect people who have never experienced racism to understand why this is wrong. I was the only biracial girl in a predominantly white school and this word was used to hurt me every single day.

  37. Britney Stan January 17, 2014

Only a Beyonce fan would like this is coo.

  38. ratedx(I wish u would) January 17, 2014

it’s quite ironic that the majority of the people on here calling Madonna a racist/attention w****, stans for the biggest attention w**** in the game…

I f**** with Madonna..and she is far from racist..Madonna was and still is known for letting African Americans blow her back out…tupac is one them..

  39. Jess January 17, 2014

Says whom? Blacks usually use it as a term of endearment. Whites on the other hand, did not the general majority of the time. So wtf should Eminem, Macklemore, and Madonna be allowed to say n****? If blacks, like myself, still find it racially offensive when whites say it…why should they be able to use it? Why is it necessary?

  40. Hivy January 17, 2014

I live for MADONNA!! BUT LETS be real when the black people calling each other n**** it isn’t offensive but Madonna saying it is offensive? What kind of backward society. LOOOOL I heard ICE cube call people n**** and other black males call each other n****. This world is truly backwards.

  41. Slaynine Butcher January 17, 2014

They must have revoked her H*** United license.

  42. Britney Stan January 17, 2014

pure ignorant Madonna has no class

  43. Jess January 17, 2014

    @Britney Fan

B**** stfu! I’m a Beyoncé fan and I don’t find this s*** funny. So stop trying to make this about her and stay on f****** topic.

  44. Pharaoh January 17, 2014

I feel like she may have done this because of the controversy that follows this type of comment and she might have done this because she feels like the fact that she has these ties with the African American community she can use that word. Although I do believe that no one not even the African American should be using that word since our forefathers fought so hard to get rid of it.

  45. smh January 17, 2014

She loves attention, it’s quite sad.

  46. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 17, 2014

Why are yall shocked about this.

You guys are making me laugh say things like “Madonna has no class” & “Why is her old ass acting like this” LOLOL

Where have you guys been for the past 30+ years. Madonna is the Wicked Witchh from the west honey…

  47. Anon January 17, 2014

As a Chinese woman who knows how racist terms are used to insult people of ethnic minorities I can sit here and say ‘oh she meant nothing by it.’ It’s wrong.

  48. YONCE AKA BEYONSLAY January 17, 2014

SINCE WHEN WAS MADONNA TIED TO THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY? Whitney was our queen, and Mariah was our princess. Madonna Was never really apart of our community! Her Old ass is just looking for attention! She KNEW the word would draw controversy! She is damn near 60 years old She Aint Dumb! She must have a project to promote.

  49. Molly January 17, 2014

Im half white and half black i honestly dont care if my white friends say the word because its all in the music & movies we listen to there gonna say it regardless.

  50. CBE January 17, 2014

U be on that b******* if u want too…people can defend anything online like the B.S you just wrote but let a white person call a black person a n**** face to face and see what happens. 2014 or not.

  51. Jess January 17, 2014

She’s performing with Adele on the Grammy’s this week. So of course she had to stir up some type of controversy in order to get attention.

  52. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 17, 2014

Black people are very strang people but they come across as stupid coons at times.

I’ve never understood how they can call themselves the ‘N’ word but when someone of another race uses it. They get mad…

You do know that White People invented that word for BLACKS. So if anyone should be allowed to use it. It should be whites.

But we must take that word & stop allowing it to carry so much hate. I hear white people call themselves niggaa’s all the time.

Eveyone white person that uses the word niggaa does not mean they are racist….

  53. Jess January 17, 2014

    *next week

  54. Robin’s Thicke January 17, 2014

Hmmm, so if white people are allowed to say n**** because SOME black people say it to each other, are straight people allowed to say f***** whenever they feel like it too?

  55. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* January 17, 2014

Using the N word, Whether Ended by “A” or “Er” is wrong PERIOD

Neither Blacks Nor Whites Should use it in My Honest Opinion, It is Stupid to Let blacks use it then Get Angry when a White Person, Trying to Sound Gangsta/Urban/Ghetto/Tough use it, BOTH need to Stop using it.

  56. JanetXone January 17, 2014

The stupidity in these comments is so real! If we applied your theory EVERYTHING would be allowed. Like someone above me said, it’s very easy to downplay the power of a word when you’ve never had it used against you.

  57. Paula January 17, 2014

Yes I understand now didn’t really think of it that way to be honest.
Madonna is ignorant to be using that word.

  58. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 17, 2014

Madonna was NEVER apart of the black community. She never had success & or was a household name in the average black household.

She really was for White People. I really didnt learn about Madonna until I became a music fan… But Madonna was never played in my household growing up…

  59. Lana Del Slay January 17, 2014

The gay community is filled with hypocrites imo. Would you be so quick to write this off as a joke if a straight man hashtagged #DisFag?

  60. YONCE AKA BEYONSLAY January 17, 2014

Black People have been calling each other “N****” since the s**** days because their Masters instilled it into them! Blacks Will NEVER stop using it!!!! Just like the Light Skin vs Black Skin S*** started back in the s**** days when the Light Skinned Slaves worked in the houses while the Dark Skinned Slaves worked in the fields! This S*** has been embedded in us for 400+ Years! You dumb b****** think it’s gonna just go away overnight? Pick Up a damn book instead of a Spice Girls CD and maybe you will learn something!!! I Come here to have fun & throw shade, I never like to indulge in these type of arguments but some of you sound like fools! Us Blacks have been DAMAGED and yes we get mad when Whites “Borrow” our culture because its “Hot” at the moment. No, We don’t like when other races say “N*****”. There is PAIN behind that word that Whites would NEVER know!!!

  61. Molly January 17, 2014

Like what am i supposed to do if someone says n!gga? Hit them then look like an ignorant black fool? the word is meaningless in this generation if someone calls you a f** or n**** and you get offended then you must be one you can’t insult me about something im not.

  62. Dance4U January 17, 2014

Oh don’t you know, black people aren’t allowed to be angry when someone does something against them because it makes other people feel uncomfortable.

Gay people are the only people in society who get a pass to say whatever they want BUT THEN say they want equality for all. In reality, they don’t want equality and REALLY want the same power as the homophobes who made their lives hell used to have.

So if you’re black just accept that anyone can say whatever they like about you and get away it. If you don’t like it, say you’re gay and everyone will walk on egg shells.

  63. Molly January 17, 2014

@Yonce you better preach people expect change right away when change starts with the person themselves i could honestly care less about the word.

  64. Jess January 17, 2014

    @Molly

Has anyone ever called you n***** before? Not n!gga but n*****?

  65. Queen Chaka Chaka January 17, 2014

So true about the gay community. They’re becoming the same as the bigots. Equality for all…except anyone who doesn’t agree with us.

    #ThatsNotEquality
    #OpressedBecomingOpressors

  66. YONCE AKA BEYONSLAY January 17, 2014

@Molly oh but darling you are Ignorant! The definition of Ignorant is “1.
lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated.”

I have Plenty of White friends. I grew up in a Neighborhood full of Whites and Asians. As a matter of Fact, We were one of the first Black families on my block! But Guess What? My White friends have RESPECT for me so they wouldn’t DARE utter that word in my presence. I can’t control what they do when im not around, but they would NEVER!

  67. BanjeeRiri January 17, 2014

So Madge can say n**** but Carrie Prejean can’t say she doesn’t agree with gay marriage? Wow.

  68. Jess January 17, 2014

Exactly! Whites aren’t a part of our culture. They will NEVER understand where we are coming from. Ugghh!

  69. Love2Love January 17, 2014

  72. Jess January 17, 2014

    @Molly

    Hmm, didn’t think so.

  73. TeenageDreamer January 17, 2014

Fools often don’t know that they are fools. Yes Molly I’m talking about you. Only idiots struggle to see why something is offensive just because they aren’t offended by it.
I am straight but I am offended when I hear someone use the word f***** because I think it is cruel, I am white and I am offended when I hear someone use the n word in the same way I am offended when I hear someone call someone else a cracker.

  74. Molly January 17, 2014

@Teenagedream Girl i don’t care about how you feel. Sensitive b****** can go.

  75. Molly January 17, 2014

B****, STFU, you racist old BLACK C**T!

  97. Carlitos January 18, 2014

RACE CARD! RACE CARD! RACE CARD!

  98. Carlitos January 18, 2014

@crazyke$ha how are black people able to take a word that was directed towards them in the most worst of ways, yet black people still use it as a term of endearment? I mean, it’s baffling. And I’m not white; however, if the white man invented the word, shouldn’t they be able to use if and however they please?

  99. toohotfortv January 18, 2014

Because I’m sure you’re white, I’ll direct you to something a very thoughtful white person expressed. 4 reasons white people can’t say the N-word.

    1. We lost the privilege. You know that whole, you know, 600 year time period when White people were buying and selling Black people as chattel? Well, remember how that whole system was enforced by a violent system of repression whereby Black slaves who did not act the way the White folks wanted them to were beaten and murdered? Oh, and remember that time after slavery when Black people were locked in a system called Jim Crow that used a similar fear of violence and repression to keep Black people in “their place?” Well, in the midst of all that s***, there was a word invented by White people as a pejorative for Black folks. It was used just about every time a Black person was whipped, chained, beaten, insulted, spit upon, r****, lynched, or otherwise humiliated and mistreated by White folks.

Thus, I don’t care how much White folks want to use that word. I don’t care how unfair you think it is that someone else gets to use it when we don’t. Our people gave up the privilege to use that word the moment we invented it as a tool of oppression.

    2. Why the hell should we get a say in the conversation about that word? There is a lively debate in African American communities between those who think it’s time to “Bury the N-Word” and those who think it can be reclaimed as a word of camaraderie and brotherhood/sisterhood. That is a healthy conversation, and it’s a part of a long history of marginalized communities attempting to “reclaim” words that were once oppressive. No matter how long that conversation goes on in Black communities, though, White people do not get to take part. I’m sorry. As the ones from whom the word of violence and oppression must be reclaimed, we do not get to have a word in that conversation. Plain and simple.

    3. Why should everything be in bounds to us? The question being asked is, in essence, the epitome of White Privilege. As White folks, we tend to think that every door should be open to us, every conversation should be ours, every space should welcome us. We think this way because, when it comes to racialized spaces, that tends to be the case. We have the privilege of having our voices heard and our presence recognized in just about every space there is. Thus, we HATE IT when we are told that we are not actually welcome in a conversation. But here’s what we need to understand: we’re the only people that get the privilege of access to whatever racialized space we want. White Women can hopefully begin to understand this when you think about the ways in which you are denied voice and space by dominant Men, but White people need to understand this. Just because we are not welcome to use one word in the English language does not mean that we are being discriminated against. It means that we, rightfully, need to shut up and listen.

    4. It’s not, in fact, a double standard. It’s a standard:

  100. toohotfortv January 18, 2014

It doesn’t matter if Kanye gets to say it. It doesn’t matter if you claim you grew up in an era and an environment in which the word was commonly used. It doesn’t matter if you say you have a problem with conservative white males, or you just really love hip-hop, or – and this one’s the richest of all – that you’re talking about a particular kind of person who behaves in a certain way but surely not all persons of a certain color. Yeah, still no. Just a big, big, big no. What about if you put a letter A on it, instead of an “er”? Still no. There will always come a point in the Biggie lyrics where you are not permitted to rap along. And you can’t do blackface either, by the way.

It doesn’t matter that you grew up in the projects or you voted for Obama or you’re just doing a routine from “Blazing Saddles.” It’s a derogatory term that has been traditionally and is still frequently used by members of one race to insult and demean members of another race. The fact that it is now sometimes appropriated in different contexts does not change that, and it most especially doesn’t change it with regard to you as a white person applying it to black people. Are you bothered that this means African-Americans have cultural permission to do something that you can’t? You feel that’s unfair? Yes, let’s whine about unfairness; this will be fun. You talk about how you can’t say the N-word, and then I’ll point you to all of American history up to and including this very moment. You can’t use a single word? SO TOTALLY UNFAIR. Get over it. But if you need any further evidence that it’s not OK to say it, just look at the people who do

So @Carlitos, I’m pretty sure latino people didn’t make up the terms S***, Wetback, amigo, beaner, border hopper, Can, car thief, Chilango, chili-shitter, coke camel, dry-waller, ese, garden gnome, goya, mojo, scratch back, or wab but, I’m also pretty sure that, even though the history behind those terms is not as in depth, that you would prefer for people of other cultures to refrain from using them. I could be wrong though.

    Madonna is not a racist!

  103. Aynon January 18, 2014

If its only acceptable for one race to say the n word. Noone should be able to say it. I’m black and that why I don’t use it, because it’s reverse racism, you are white therefore you can’t say/do something. That is racist. Not to mention if there is so many bad memories behind the word why do black people use it?

  104. Whatinthe!? January 18, 2014

Black people think everyone’s racist but themselves. Quick to point the finger when someone else say’s “N****” but its cool when they say it! #GiveMeABreak#YouNiggazATrip

  105. Cendy January 18, 2014

It’s not reverse racism! Blacks can be prejudice towards white ppl, but they can never oppress them. When have you heard of a black man telling a white man he can’t sit in the front of the bus!? Pls

  106. katie January 18, 2014

    Beyonce is white.

I´m so f****** sure Madonna is not a racist person. I know her moves, her career.
I´m old enough, probably one of the oldest persons in this blog along with @s****** blonde, and I´ve lived a big part of Madonna´s career. And this is what she does, she´s constantly creating controversy, especially when a new album is not too far from release. Last go round she used Lady Gaga´s Born This Way (she didn´t mind about it for a whole year but suddendly did when she released her album) and a Janet Jackson comment about the SuperBowl (cos she was going to headline). Now that this year she´ll release a new album expect more things like this to come.
Look she´s the queen of pop, great catalogue, amazing reinvention and the necessary ambition (and hard work) but her career would have been nothing without controversy. I´m not against it, cos material like hers needed to be successful, and if that was the only way to maintain relevancy, I´m ok with it. I don´t mind gimmicks if there´s something behind to back it back, I´ve always said it. But come on, it´s not daring or funny anymore, too old for this, just release good material cos you have been lacking in that department since 2005.

I honestly hate that word. I never use it and I don’t like when any person of any race uses it. H/ever, based on the way its being used, it doesn’t necessarily cause me to hold it against that person or dislike them; I would just prefer the word be retired forever! If she had used it in a racist way that would be different but in this case it doesn’t change how I feel about Madonna as a person or entertainer. She’s still the QOP and I’m looking forward to seeing her and Queen Bey on the Grammys if the rumors are true!

  109. fart January 18, 2014

She is so copying that racist Gaga smh

  110. S****** Blonde January 18, 2014

I’m a blond guy, i have a black friend, sometimes i say to him ‘that’s my n****’ and he says to me ‘you litle white trash’ but is all with love, he knows it and its cool with that, i love that guy to death, i’m pretty sure Madonna is not a racist person, sometimes white people wants to be cool but it doesn’t end up very well, some things are better left unsaid, especially if you are a white famous person.

  111. Aynon January 18, 2014

Telling a white person they can’t do something and giving the reason, because you’re white is racist. Doesn’t matter whether its sitting on a bus or saying a word. It’s all the same.

  112. wow January 18, 2014

    Just no.

All these people defending her, can we get past the fact Madonna isn’t racist, OF COURSE MADONNA ISN’T RACIST!!! Should she have said it NO! Does she need to take the picture down YES!

Go watch 12 years a s**** and then so casually brush that word aside you ignorant f****.

  113. TAYLOR SWIFTS NUMBER 1 FAN!!! January 18, 2014

At least she used an alternative spelling to the actual one..

  114. Tash January 18, 2014

She has a new era coming.

  115. FAF January 18, 2014

This is the same woman who said Black men are the biggest race of woman haters.. b**** u aint black how do u know?

  116. princess pocketbook January 18, 2014

The same way a woman calls herself and her girlfriend a b**** but gets upset if a man does. The same way a home sexual calls themselves a f** but straight person better not. Do you understand now?

  117. Touché January 18, 2014

I’m not even going to waste my time and energy explaining why this is wrong because it’s obvious. That old witch knows exactly what she’s doing. She, not only is trying to bring attention to herself for an upcoming performance but she is “indirectly” trying (like the rest of them) to get black folks distracted from more important issues in our communities. Believe me, her words are more than meets the eye.

  118. iamdiego January 19, 2014

cuz rihanna is black. its not ok for a white person EVER.
