SoundExchange To Launch Monthly Royalty Payments System

They’re three of the world’s most lucrative entertainers, all responsible for turning the writers behind their material into millionaires.

Not sure what we mean? Well, simply ask the likes of The Dream, Sia, Elijah Blake and Miguel how ‘financially fruitful’ cuts penned for Beyonce, Rihanna, Ciara and Mariah Carey have been for them, providing a stability few entertainers can say they’ve enjoyed at any point in their careers.

Now, in a move that’ll make the business of songwriting even more appealing to chart hopefuls, SoundExchange has announced plans to launch a monthly royalty payment system, seeing writers reap the fruits of their creative labor faster than ever before.

Details below…

Responsible for collecting and distributing royalties for non-interactive digital music services, ‘Sound‘ has revealed that its members will soon be eligible to secure monthly payments.

Important, as this sees them the first performing rights organisation to do so, perhaps standing head and shoulders above competitors who distribute payments on a quarterly basis.

As it stands, their exciting new plan will only benefit those who are owed more than $250 per month and are signed on to receive electronic payments, but will continue to pay those who don’t meet this criteria every four months.

Billboard Biz adds:

“SoundExchange tells Billboard that half of its 15,000 to 18,000 payments each quarter are made electronically, and approximately 40% of payees signed up to receive electronic payment will exceed the $250 threshold. The organisation notes it will revisit the $250 threshold in a few months to determine if a change is needed.

SoundExchange collects and distributes royalties from non-interactive digital music services that use the Section 114 compulsory license for sound recordings. Internet radio service Pandora, satellite radio company Sirius XM and cable radio service Music Choice are among the 2,000 services that pay royalties to SoundExchange.”

Just stop it. You know Beyonce doesn’t write her own songs.

  2. BeyBeyKing January 15, 2014

Yaaaaasss so my fave will be even richer every month. #HowYEUdoing

  3. ChartToppahYonce January 15, 2014

I didn’t know Rihanna wrote her own songs.

  4. CiciFinnaBeABride January 15, 2014

Beyonce steals songs, she doesn’t write them.

  5. BionicGlam January 15, 2014

Amazing but if $250 is the lowest you can be paid The Lambs shouldn’t get too excited. #Triumphlop.

  6. iconic cici January 15, 2014

Since when did Beyonce or Rihanna write their own songs? Unlike them Ciara is a certified songwriter.

  7. Lana Del Slay January 15, 2014

I love when y’all post real music news like this, but please stop pretending as if any of the girls in the picture are writers. Beyonce can barely write her name, Rihanna is only good at writing her signature at the end of h***** prescriptions and Ciara will be too busy trying to get Future to support their child to write about anything.

  8. Draggin4MrsCarter January 15, 2014

I spat out my $500 a bottle glass of wine when I saw them suggest Rihanna or Ciara help to write their own songs.

  9. ratedxxx(bad chick) January 15, 2014

so basically mariah is going to be making more money sitting on her fat ass…because we all know mariah actually writes her own songs,

flop album or not, she’s a songwriter so her ass is going to make alot of money….f*** touring, the b**** hasnt had a huge tour since she started decades ago, and she’s still making more paper than those who has to tour every year

  10. WeAreLambily January 15, 2014

If Beyonce is a songwriter, pigs can fly.

  11. MusicStan(ya’ll know who i stan for) January 15, 2014

Something tells me there is some trickery with this… I thought songwriter get paid everytime the artists perform the song, win awards, and etc…. things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm……….???????????

  12. The original truth January 15, 2014

Okay here come the kids that think they know everything. Nobody takes full credit as “writer” on most mainstream albums. There’s always multiple writers. That’s goes for Neyo, Bey, Mariah, Alicia and whoever else. Beyoncé never said she writes her own songs. She makes writing contributions as other artists do.

  13. RatchetBarb January 15, 2014

And this is why the f*** I love this site. I deadass thought they get paid everytime the song gets played. I didn’t know it was every four months.

  14. iconic cici January 15, 2014

@LanadelSHIT Only thing lana is good for is writing boring depressive music, Ciara writes more enjoyable music.

@DraggingForMrsCamel im so Ciara actually writes her songs shes not here stealing song writing credits like your tired phony fav…btw Cicis belly is real (:

  15. NaviBoi January 15, 2014

This was so interesting to read, because I had always assumed payments were made as soon as the song is played on radio or on TV. Why do they make them wait so long before giving them their money?

  16. BanjeeRiri January 15, 2014

This means Future will have no excuse to make his month child support payments. #LoveSong

  17. MusicStan(ya’ll know who i stan for) January 15, 2014

    @the original truth
you are right… the only artist I can said who are actually songwriters are jazmine sullivan, ciara, mary j blige, seyvn streeter, jhene aiko, faith evans, and etc the one who starter out as writers or actual have written down lyrics…

  18. applause January 15, 2014

If only your faves could write like my fave.

  22. applause January 15, 2014

Gaga writes her own music even Katy and Kesha do and you mean to tell me Rihanna and Beyonce overrated asses can’t?

  23. Lock4Aiko January 15, 2014

Beyonce is a song writer though.

  24. ***flawless January 15, 2014

who is Gags tho? She didnt even get nominated for a grammy for the basic mess she “writes”. Slaty Perry has been snatching that wig effortlessly.

  25. applause January 15, 2014

any song writing credits Rihanna has she bout them

  26. HausMuthaAdele January 15, 2014

They get paid every four months? That cheque better be worth the wait.

  27. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

FORGET WHAT YOU HATERS SAY…..Null and Void.

Moment: Beyonce Becomes First Black Woman To Win ASCAP’s Songwriter Of The Year Award

Over the course of her 16 years in the business, Beyonce’s literally done it all and continues to captivate. Growing into her roles as wife to Jay-Z and mother to baby girl Blue Ivy, folks shouldn’t forget that Queen B has been at this for a while. Back in 2002, the Destiny’s Child singer snagged ASCAP’s coveted songwriter of the year award. The songs she penned that gained her the top honor were “Independent Women Part I,” “Jumpin Jumpin” and “Survivor.” With an upcoming album, expect the Houston bombshell to reclaim her throne.

  28. ***flawless January 15, 2014

    Thank u Richie…. geesh

  29. applause January 15, 2014

Gaga has 5 grammys while Katy has zero she’ll be lucky to win 1 tbh Gaga isn’t worried about that joke

  30. CiaraTheFemaleMj January 15, 2014

    Too bad Rihanna isn’t eligible.

  32. TisForTamar January 15, 2014

If I buy songs and say I wrote them and keep it a secret of COURSE I’ll win song writing awards! Beyonce’s awards don’t count because everybody knows she steals songs like Rihanna dragged Ciara’s edges when she found out Ciara was having an affair with Lebron.

  33. ***flawless January 15, 2014

I think katy may be winning her first grammy this year

  36. ***flawless January 15, 2014

    ASCAP>> your OPINION
you have to bring something(proof) to back your claims that automatically disqualifies Beyonce as a songwriter/contributer.

  37. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

YESSS Baby Ascap>>>>>>>your opinion. Haters save it. No ones cares.

  38. molly January 15, 2014

  39. JOHNVIDAL January 15, 2014

LOL so Mariah Carey is basically the only real songwriter mentioned in this post 🙂 Dear guys at TGJ give us a break. You could have put Alicia Keys next to her for example, not those 3.

  40. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

@Molly. I know you don’t want to see , but ASCAP>>>>>> your opinion babe. Sorry, null and void babe.

  41. ***flawless January 15, 2014

At this point it’s safe to say that everybody knows Beyonce isnt 100% original, still doesn’t take away from her talent. None of these pop stars are 100% original. it’s just the only thing people can come after her for. She still slays

  42. TaylorWins January 15, 2014

ASCAP will only go on what they’ve been told and they were told lies. Beyonce is NOT a songwriter and never has been and it’s high time you accepted it.

  43. Rosie January 15, 2014

LOL the Z-Squad is STILL pressed over Lana. I saw their comments from last night. Just accept the fact that your fave is now just an ATL baby momma/side chick and give up.

All of our faves should get money for this, I guess. Especially if you have the first credit. Unfortunately, some people can’t say that about their fave.

  44. ***flawless January 15, 2014

i find it funny how pressed ciara fans are. Beyonce may not be known as a songwriter but she has the talent, success, accolades, and fan base to back her up. What does ciara have other than a b****** child by a z-list rapper

  45. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

Does Mariah have an ASCAP award? No shade just asking

  46. ***flawless January 15, 2014

    @Taylor

You have a reciept of ASCAP being told a lie? We know Beyonce isnt known to be a songwriter, but that doesn’t mean she hasnt contributed. She makes up for that in other areas. There’s nothing to accept

  47. MadameMariah January 15, 2014

Beyoncé has turned tossing the salad after it’s been made and claiming credit for making it into an art form. It’s up there with her inability to keep her legs closed and make it through a routine without whipping her hair like she’s possessed by the holy ghost, and then thrusting her v***** into the nearest camera when she’s on stage.

With the Amazonian robot empress from the kingdom of lost wigs having a new album out, it of course it features some scammed credits. Trailing behind a b**** like Daniel Julez’s pull away train on a rope. A Beyoncé album doesn’t get mastered without a songwriting scam or two…or 4.

Beyoncé’s credibility as a songwriter was thrown into question way back with Destiny’s Child’s Survivor. An album which had 17 of its 18 songs citing Beyoncé as a songwriter, and the full 18 listing Beyoncé as a producer or a co-producer. It’s not impossible for a female artist to write and co-produce all of her own material. There are many who do it and do it brilliantly. Tori Amos, Hikaru Utada, Ayumi Hamasaki, Björk, Lady Gaga and Kumi Koda to name a few. But when stories begin to surface more than once that perhaps the album liner notes are not an accurate representation of the input that an artist had, then you do have to wonder. And the question as to whether Beyoncé writes and produces all of which she and her album liners say she has, has continued to buzz around Beyoncé like a bumble bee trying to make home in a her weave.

The order of which a songwriters name appears within the listed credits of a song has long been a debate. Such seemingly small trivial matters are one of the things which had John and Paul fall out during their time in The Beatles. It’s somewhat of “a thing” that the list of songwriters on a song are ordered from who contributed the most to the least. However, there’s nothing to prove this; and there are more arguments against this than there are those for it. Producers are also often credited as the writer of a song, even when they’ve contributed nothing lyrically to the song at all. Baring this in mind, it is rather telling that in many of 4’s song credits, Beyoncé’s is listed first as a songwriter and also as a producer on songs which we know existed long before she had gotten them. Beyoncé obviously seems to think that singing on a song means that you produced it. And being the person singing the song, that your name should be listed first as the songwriter of it. It doesn’t work like this. Unless of course you have Beyoncé’s money and power. After all… Money talks so that the album credits do. And if Beyoncé turns around to you and says “I like your song. But I won’t record it unless I can be credited as a songwriter” to claim part of the royalties, are you really going to turn her down, knowing how big she’ll make your record?

  48. MadameMariah January 15, 2014

I came up with the idea to build a track using the guitar riff from Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen.” I really wanted to play the riff from “Eye of the Tiger,” but I was flipping through my CDs in the studio and I couldn’t find it. But I saw the Stevie Nicks CD and I remembered that the riff was similar.

I figured I’d put the guitar loop on there temporarily, and later go into the studio with a guitar and replay it, because I’d learned, after sampling Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” for Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West,” that I didn’t want to lose 50% of the publishing. I vividly remember telling Mathew Knowles, “Mathew, you got to book me into your studio and let me replay that riff.” It was Guitar 101! One note!

I remember watching Barbara Walters interview Beyoncé about “Bootylicious,” and she told Barbara about how she came up with the idea for the track. And I was just like, “What?” I called Mathew-which was a big mistake; I got emotional, and I apologized after-but I called Mathew and said, “Mathew, like, why?”

And he explained to me, in a nice way, he said, “People don’t want to hear about Rob Fusari, producer from Livingston, N.J. No offense, but that’s not what sells records. What sells records is people believing that the artist is everything.” And I’m like, “Yeah, I know, Mathew. I understand the game. But come on, I’m trying too. I’m a squirrel trying to get a n**, too.”

  49. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

Ascap >>>>>>> ….fill in the blank. She already has the award and made history while getting it? Once again does Mariah have one?

  50. NoShade January 15, 2014

Mariah didn’t write “all” of the songs in her albums. At least three of her major hits were covers/remakes!!! I’ll Be There…Without You…and Open Arms. There might be more…

  51. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

    @THAT PRESSED HIVE MEMBER !!!

Michael Jackson aint got that award niether so STFU!!

  52. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

Mariah Carey does not need a AWARD!!

WALTER A. DIVAD FOSTER & MANY OTHER REAL WRITERS HAS ALWAYS PRAISED & SAID MARIAH WRITES HER OWN MUSIC!!!

  53. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

    @NO SHADE..

Sit your tired broke ass down!!!

Mariah Carey cant write COVER SONGS IDIOT BECAUSE THEIR COVERSSS

  54. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

Mariah Carey has written/co-written EVERY SONG IN HER CATALOGUE!!!!

EXCEPT FOR COVERS & THE DUET WITH WHITNEY HOUSTON

  55. Lovebird January 15, 2014

Too bad Beyonce’s song writers will NEVER see a penny of that.

The money will magically divert to Blue Ivy’s trust fund. That’s what you get for working with a thief and a fraudster.

  56. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

I do believe Beyonce has written songs.

BUT!!! The woman has lied about many songs she puts her name on…

Irreplaceable: Written by Ne-YO (BEYONCE ATTACHED HER NAME ON IT BECAUSE OF AD-LIBS & Neyo allowed her)

Halo: Written by some white dude (Beyonce was allowed to put her name on the writers thing bacause of adlibs)

If I Were A Boy: Written by some white girl on MySpace! (Beyonce’s team stole this song from the girl & paid the girl off.. It was a big story in 2008 about Beyonce’s team stealing that girls song. Also, Halo was given to Leona Lewis first before Beyonce…

I have never herd about Mariah Carey’s song being given to different artist before her & then all of a sudden Mariah Carey has writers credit of a song that was already made

SORRY FOR MY GRAMMER BUT IM MAD!!!

  57. MC!! January 15, 2014

Mariah writes her own music she wrote close my eyes and petals BY HERSELF! and seriously do you know how many demos of beyonce songs are on youtube that the original songwriter sings?! and when she sings it the lyrics are exactly the same!! were talking about a woman who put her names on covers she does!! get real!!

  58. Lovebird January 15, 2014

Richie gurl just stop; everybody knows Beyonce doesn’t write her own songs.

She can’t even write her own name, what makes you think she can write a song

  59. Lovebird January 15, 2014

If I was a boy was written by BC Jean

  60. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

Oh ok…..So Mariah doesn’t Have and Ascap award. Got it…….

  61. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

If you still dont believe Mariah Carey writes her own music well…

Ever wonder why a woman that does not do world tours every other year…

Still has a net worth of over 500+ million dollars..

The reason why Mimi has a net worth of 500+ million is because she…

1.) She is the executive producer of all her albums

2.) She is the MAIN SINGER, WRITER & PRODUCER OF ALL HER ALBUMS

3.) Mariah Carey makes atleast 3$’s from her album sales. She gets paid as a SINGER, Writer, Producer & Executive Producer!!

THATS WHY SHE AINT GOT TO TOUR!!!

Music Box sold 25 million copies within 2 years (1993- 1995) during the 90’s albums were 7-10$’s. Mariah Carey was paid as the writer, producer & singer.

lets say… 8$’s x 25 million copies sold = 200+ million dollars in grossings.. Ok thats what the total grossings were for Columbia Records was at that time. Now lets see how much did Mariah Carey make from Music Box back in 1995 only 2 years after its release (25+ million copies sold)

$2.50 x 25 million copies sold = 60+ million dollars for Mariah Carey in net worth just from the sales of Music Box between 1993 – 1995

  62. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

Ascap>>>>>>> y’all opinion Beyonce has the award. Believe what you want. I posted my receipts. All y’all giving me is you’re opinion and I’m not here for it. Thanks have a blessed day.

Keep in mind she was the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN………

  63. Carmen January 15, 2014

Lol you people exaggerate about Beyonce. She does co write some of her stuff she has just been shady aswell. And if she was that bad, she would not still have the best of the best writers (Dianne Warren, Ryan Tedder, Sia etc) STILL wanting to work with her.

  64. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

Daydream: 1995 (Sold 20 million copies by 1997)

Mariah Carey gets paid $2.50 from a 10$ album

10$’s x 20 million copies sold = 200+ million dollars in profit for Columbia!

Mariah get paid by Columbia writers, producers & singers fee… which is about 2.50

2.50 x 20 million copies sold = 50+ million dollars in profit for Mariah Carey…

Now, in a career that spans 20+ years of 10+ multi platinum selling albums Mariah Carey’s net worth makes sense to be over 500+ million dollars…

Remember she sold 250,000,000+ albums & singles & DVDs & Others worldwide since 1990…

Mariah Carey also makes money off of everybody that covers that Christmas song of hers…

She also, makes money off of all these singing shows using her music worldwide & USA…

Mariah Carey does not need a 100+ million dollar tour to make money..

Also, touring actually is more expensive than anything.. Artist REALLY dont make alot from touring unless you are Madonna or Beyonce..

Just beacause a tour makes 200+ million $’s dont mean the artist made 200+ million $’s TRUST ME..

Touring is very expensive. You must pay the venues, workers, airplane flights, business workers, promoters & many other’s that are involve with making a tour possible!!!

  65. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

Thats great that Beyonce wom that award but WHY??

She only had 1 album out during that time. Maybe, they GAVE her that award because of Survivor (which is a song I REALLY believe Beyonce wrote & PRoduced)

Survivor is Beyonce’s masterpiece along with Independent Women…

But it still dont make sense for her to recieve that award when many black artist with a better voice/songs like Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Sade, Erykah Badu & Lauryn Hill has written songs for far more successful & better albums than Beyonce will ever make..

Lauryn Hill should’ve been the first to recieve the award for a black female writers at the ASCAP Awards

The Miseducation was writen & produced BY LAURYN HILL BY HERSELF… That album won 5 grammy awards & sold 16 million copies worldwide. Also, named one of the best albums of all time by Rolling Stone & many other outlets…

Beyonce will never be a better writer than Miss Lauryn Hill… Bye Beyonce Fan!

  66. Lambily January 15, 2014

All ima say is this Mariah has 18 #1s wrote all but three produced 14 herself check y’all books these are according to billboard history list y’all h*** tried it with a capital T! 67. Mrs. Stephy Tha Blondie January 15, 2014

Mariah Carey wrote 17 of her 18 number 1 hits…

  69. tyler January 15, 2014

DEATTH/ @ Richie clinging to that ascap award. Mariah has won over ten ascap awards throughout her career. These Beyonce stans need to know better than to come for Queenriah.

  72. credits January 15, 2014

i guess thatgrapejuice could have included images of artists who are known for songwriting….for instance, Ester Dean-who is responsible for some of rihanna hits, Ne-Yo who wrote ALL of the lyrics to irreplaceable, Keri Hilson, the dream, r. kelly, james fauntleroy, jazmine sullivan…All of these people who are known to write for other artists.

Remember that time beyonce got on stage to perform irreplaceable and said something along the lines of “i want to sing a song i wrote” lol than ne-yo shut that down in an interview later. And ‘Ego’ was actually written for chrisete michele to record first. These are facts, King B is an amazing performer but does not write her stuff.

Only thing Mariah was good at was writing her tired bops.

  76. AJ January 15, 2014

Are you F****** KIDDING??!! Mariah Carey has 2010’s ASCAP Song of the decade award! She has awards even for the song with Busta Rhymes “I know what you want”…

  77. RICHIE_RICH January 15, 2014

Reading is very fundamental…….. You people having breakdown and s*** lol. Get ya life kids!!!!!

I didn’t shade Mariah I asked a Question. It’s great that Mariah has an ASCAP, but Beyonce was the first African American women to recieve one.

Why is it that Beyonce get some of y’all so upset?

  78. Navy Commander January 15, 2014

“Mariah Carey was born on Long Island, in Huntington, New York.[2][3] Her father, Alfred Roy, was of African American and Venezuelan (including Afro-Venezuelan) descent, while her mother, Patricia (née Hickey), is of white Irish descent.” -Wikipedia. her dad was black

  79. TC!!! January 15, 2014

Mariah is black you tried it!!! and Mariah has a BMI award for songwriting and she’s one of the FIRST FEMALE to get it along with Carol king…these stans!! mariahs writes songs that actually go together and tell a story beyonce has songs that just rhyme together and make no sense!!! if Mariah can’t do anything else she sure can write one hell of a song!! and on top of that she had her own label during 98 and produced for groups she signed!! Mariah did everything when it comes to recorded music….she didn’t need tour because she actually sold more than an average person who did tour. Isn’t that the point of touring anyway to promote your album so people can go out and buy it?

  80. MIMIS TWIRLING FINGER January 15, 2014

Not Stealyonce and Cierror stans coming for QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE MARIAH CAREY-CANNON

  81. Del Bey January 16, 2014

As a aspiring songwrite myself it’s good to see this efficient way of paying songwriter come up! I know one day this machine will be dispensing my cheques! And we all know beyonce doesn’t contribute to writing credits as much as she’d like to think but she still shits on all your favs in every other department, she’s a ICON these bitchy comments by Lovebird and Slayriah will go unheard by bey, she stay winning wether she wants to steal your lyrics or not

  82. Tru Voice January 16, 2014

READ YOU IDIOTS!!! He said those three mad the songs they performed THAT WERE WRITTEN BY OTHERS HITS! HE DIDN’T SAY RIRI, BEY, AND CIARA WROTE THEIR SONGS. HE SAID THEY TURNED THEM INTO HITS. Instead of Stanning so damn hard, try reading harder.

Sidebar: Mariah is the only one who writes true hits out of the singers being discussed here. But that’t not the focus of the article.

  83. Chica January 16, 2014

She has ASCAP awards for hero, dreamlover, anytime you need a friend, one sweet day, honey and we belong together. At least get your facts right.

  84. Koi January 16, 2014

Or sings them because everyone knows Priscilla renae.. Never mind. California king bed that’s all I’ll say

  85. Bey Fan January 16, 2014

I dont understand why people still debate about Beyonce writing songs.

Lets be honest, when they were getting sued for Survivor lyrics, people wanted to drag Beyonce. But not give credit for writing it. I cant

And I think Mariah is good song writer, but her songs have a list of writers too. The song Obsessed, which I think is her weakest song lyrically, had 3 writes.

Yall love to come for Bey….but she has an ASCAP award.

  86. suga&spice January 16, 2014

I hate to have to point this out to u. but kandie burruss was the 1st black woman to win an ascap award, not Bey and thats a fact u can check so u won’t think I’m lying or hating
