Billboard & Twitter Team Up To Launch ‘Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts’

It’s an unprecedented move and one few saw coming. Music bible Billboard have announced that they are partnering with Twitter to launch a tally that could radically reshape the music industry.

Full story below…

Christened the ‘Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts’, the tally will be the first to use Twitter data to spotlight the top and emerging tracks and artists of the moment.

An exclusive, multi-year partnership, the the charts will track US music conversations among the millions of Tweets sent each day. “Combining the authority of the Billboard charts and Twitter’s public, real-time data, these powerful co-branded charts will reshape for consumers and the industry the way music success is measured”.

More broadly, the count will reflect the top tracks being discussed, as well as highlight the most talked about and shared songs by both new and established acts.

Updated multiples times a week, the chart will, of course, be live on Billboard.com and will also be pushed heavily by Billboard’s Twitter account.

A very interesting way of evolving and adapting to the times. It’ll be uber intriguing to see what impact this has on the musical landscape. Because, if this does what it says on the tin, it could positively put more power in the hands of the “people” rather than “politics” thank sink the chances of many a promising act/track.

Exciting times. Exciting times.

    Oh my, this is intriguing…

    • FutureCIARA March 27, 2014

      When will this take effect?

And tbh, Billboard/Twitter will still hold enough political power over the industry and Twitter conversations to effect a songs success, no matter how many people are tweeting about it, or how popular it is….

If they want me to believe that this is a positive step toward letting the “People” hold the power over a songs success…. They have got to be kidding me, and Im not buying it AT ALL!!!!

Twitter isn’t even credible to me anyways, seeing as how celebs can even purchase their own number of followers.

      • Mizuki March 27, 2014

I have no idea, but I guess in the coming weeks. Record labels will definitely take advantage of this, and Facebook is the next MySpace cause my account has been inactive for months.

The ultimate Kii is that Disney’s FROZEN soundtrack is slaying and scalping all of our faves TBH!

    • Mizuki March 27, 2014

As of March 12, 2014, the soundtrack for Frozen has had fourteen consecutive weeks on top of Billboard Top Soundtracks.[28] On the US Billboard 200, the album debuted at #18, the highest chart position for the soundtrack in an animated film since the 2006 film Cars.[29] It later moved up to #10, becoming the tenth soundtrack from an animated film to reach top 10.[30] The soundtrack subsequently moved to #4, which is the highest position for an animated film soundtrack since Disney’s Pocahontas in 1995.[31] In the week ending January 5, 2014, Frozen reached No. 1, surpassing Beyoncé’s self-titled album to become the fourth animated film soundtrack in history to reach this position.[32] It remained at number one for a second consecutive week, becoming the first theatrical film soundtrack to stay at No. 1 for multiple weeks since Dreamgirls in early 2007, and the first animated film to spend more than one week at No. 1 since Disney’s The Lion King in 1994 and 1995.[33] With six non-consecutive weeks at number one, Frozen earned the most weeks at No. 1 for a soundtrack since Titanic in 1998.[34][35]

Frozen was the fifth best-selling soundtrack album in the US in 2013 with 338,000 copies sold for the year.[36] On January 5, 2014, it topped the iTunes chart at No. 1 for album sales, selling over 165,000 copies.[37][38] The soundtrack has so far sold 1.6 million copies in the US as of March 26, 2014.[39] An exclusive vinyl LP edition of the soundtrack will be released in March 2014.[40

this is more bb bs. twitter consist of ~25% real people. that based on tracks and tweets twitter realtime search is and will be more blown up by bots, spambots and more automation what not. i’d not take that charts idea very serious.

    • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

      ^^^FACTS right here tbh

  6. Absolved March 27, 2014

Boring. What Billboard needs to be focusing its time on is repairing their faulty Hot 100 Chart; taking streaming and videos totally out of the equation, and returning it to focusing on primarily airplay and sales. I’m tired of Billboard going out of its way to placate social networking. Who cares? What’s on the radio is what really counts.

    • Mizuki March 27, 2014

Uh, have you been listening to the radio lately? They play the same song every 10 minutes! The radios are now being controlled by the record labels, not the people! It’s time to get with the times!

      • naaahhh March 27, 2014

going twitter is not going with time. the labels will start to mess with it too. they can manipulate it if they want. when that happens all the charts are worthless, just to make the industry bosses high. it is made up or bought. totally FAKE industry BS.

      • JB102 March 27, 2014

F*** “the people.” Every time “the people” get enough leverage to control things, the system becomes more and more f*cked up. You can take into account what “the people” say, but “the people” shouldn’t be dictating s***. Sorry but the proof is in the pudding. Pre-2007, the music scene was MUCH healthier than it’s been post-2007 when the will of “the people” started dictating things.

    • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

@ABSOLVED @naaahhh thank god finally some sane people are in here educate these fools.

      • Mizuki March 27, 2014

I’ll entertain you little kids. So let’s say Billboard does in fact take streaming and videos out of the equation. What would that do for the charts with radio being in it’s current state? I’ll give you the pros: no novelty artist like psy and baaur charting and cons: mainstream artist will continue to top the charts while other talented artist like John Legend struggle to even reach the top without streaming and videos. We are in a digital age where people are online 24/7, and if you can’t keep up well maybe it’s time for you to put down that computer and ipad.

      • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

Girl bye you said a whole lot of nothing the point is don’t nobody gonna believe this sh!t>>>>>> now exit b****.

  7. G.U.Y. March 27, 2014

Billboard continues to slide more and more into irrelevance.

  8. Mizuki March 27, 2014

At this point it’s hard to keep up with Billboard and it’s many charts. Did not know they even had a YouTube chart.

  9. lovebird March 27, 2014

Oh, I guess this means Beyonce will FINALLY get a hit in 6 years seeing that Twitter is the hives natural habitat where they harass anybody with an opinion on their demi-god.

    • hatebird is an ugly pressed black b**** March 27, 2014

Why are you always so concerned with Beyonce and the HIive though? Beyonce’s albums is selling 10x better than your faves without a #1 hit. Please think about that and take several seats! #1 hits are not a necessity in Beyonce’s career, especially with so many mediocre nontalented artists receiving them. She’s above the pack and the standards. know that

      • lovebird March 27, 2014

And hate Partition is still mudsliding down the hot 100

      • bow down b****** March 27, 2014

Can’t remember to purchase you gold yet?

      • LOL March 27, 2014

        BEYONCE 1.9 Million

Unapologetic with it’s number 1 single? 1.1 mill? All the navy is good for is single chart stats. basic like your fave hehe

      • lovebird March 27, 2014

Has FLOPtition passed the 100K sold mark yet?

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

Has Rated R, LOUD, TTT, UNA passed the double platinum mark yet with 6 #1 singles?

      • lovebird March 27, 2014

They are busy outselling your LOCAL favorite in other markets other than the US.

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

The only Beyonce album any of those albums have outsold is 4. THAT’S IT! I can guarantee they won’t outsell BEYONCE though 😀

      • lol March 27, 2014

        @iamanthony

ikr! Isn’t it funny that Rihanna has had to release those 4 albums(working on 5th and 6th) and in the same time , Beyonce only released 4 and her new album BEYONCE? Just noticed how hard Rihanna has to work to keep up with Beyonce 😉

  10. lovebird March 27, 2014

Oh Future Ciara, you could be using Instagram, WhatsApp, Google+, YouTube or whatever; you could be living at the Pacific Palisades or vacationing at the Maldives; NO ONE WILL GIVE A F***.

  11. lovebird March 27, 2014

    @Absolved

So you want Clear Channel to continue to dictate to you what’s hot and what isn’t?

  12. Summertime sadness March 27, 2014

Why did can’t remember to forget you flop so bad? did it even make top 10??????????????????

  13. hatebird is an ugly pressed black b**** March 27, 2014

This’ll work great for Rihanna. She already sits on twitter and begs her fans to purchase her music

    • Summertime sadness March 27, 2014

      lmao

    • Summertime sadness March 27, 2014

She needs this so bad because her next album is determined to flop.

      • lovebird March 27, 2014

At least it’ll win a Grammy

      • kiiing down March 27, 2014

I doubt it .13 number 1 hits and 4 solo grammys. Doesn’t seem too likely, but eh

  14. lovebird March 27, 2014

Can we talk about how Can’t remember to purchase you outpeaked Partition and XO

    • iamanthony March 27, 2014

Because it was promoted with vevo release date, video photos, video teasers. Vevo is the only reason the song charted period. It’s a flop on radio and in sales. Beyonce hasn’t done a single thing for Partition. A video that’s already on her album is charting from the video alone. You might wanna hold your tongue. Beyonce’s tour just wrapped and the hive will drag you heaux

      • lovebird March 27, 2014

Blah blah blah ain’t nobody got time for that excuses wridden novel.

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

It’s not an excuse. What promo has Beyonce done, other than the grammys months ago? Her album has outsold your fave’s right? Her singles are charting without performances and promo right? Think before you type pressed asshole

  15. Antonio March 27, 2014

So if a song or album has 500k Tweets, that means it’s Gold on this chart? I thought Billboard already had the Top Social 50 charts or whatever it’s called which tracks an artists popularity on social media… but anyway, I don’t see the point of this. Billboard needs to go back to sales and airplay. Streams are fine imo because all artist use streaming sites/apps to release music so Streaming Charts are necessary in todays market

  16. lol March 27, 2014

#TOUR The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour has now grossed $203,343,209 with 15 shows left to report

#TOUR The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour is now the 6th highest grossing female tour of all time

Where is stadium status tho? *chuckles*

  17. lol March 27, 2014

Beyonce reached 11 Million followers on instagram. Coming for that w****’s social media crown with less post and o following. All in a few months #KING #BOWDOWNBITCH

    • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

She can get 11 million to follow her on insta but can’t get more the 4/5 million people to buy her album world wide. kii 🙂

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

ummmm.. the irony when 4 outsold memoirs, my dear and Beyonce will outsell The art of being a fat nasty has been flop as well :). Should worrying about rallying all the lambs dead and alive to buy you’re mine. The original or one of the many floptastic remixes 😀 😀

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

      • iamanthony March 27, 2014

no you didn’t strike a nerve. Mariah’s sold 200 million records ww yet none of those people care to buy you’re mine lmao BYE

      • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

        LOL Ok sis bye

      • Mimi Carey March 27, 2014

Mariah will forever be above Beyonce.

      • lmao March 27, 2014

Different generation. Mooriah is only ahead in singles and album sales. Beyonce is already more respected and considered an icon without selling 200 million records. f*** mariah we dont care about her or her old stale ass music. go and buy you’re mine

  18. naaahhh March 27, 2014

the only valid chart are the SALES. hard cover albums and itunes. everything else is for bs and hype machine. D:

  19. ROSEGOLD March 27, 2014

I miss the days where we celebrated real accomplishments like AIRPLAY and SALES!!!! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and those other social networks are irrelevant! I understand that we’re in the digital age, but gosh the industry has gone to the pitts!!!!

    • iamanthony March 27, 2014

How is streaming any different from airplay though! Streaming is a reflection of what the GP is listening to. Radio stations have too much control by the labels. Many people don’t even listen to the radio anymore. Everything is online and through social networking. The industry is evolving, as it should to fit the times.

  20. Mizuki March 27, 2014

No, the point is the cards have been set into play and you will deal. Don’t think just cause you stan for Mariah you’re off the hook. By the way how’s You’re mine doing?

    • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

You couldn’t at me directly? Weak b****.

      • Mizuki March 27, 2014

It’s not my fault this site didn’t properly reply to your comment, but the question still lies. How is you’re mine doing? Also please refrain from using profanity when addressing me.

  21. Mizuki March 27, 2014

Thank you Anthony! Took the words right out of my mouth! I try to educate these elderly folks, but they’re stuck in the 90’s and early 00’s!

    • mother earth mariah universe carey March 27, 2014

im only 24 so shut up

    • BUArising March 27, 2014

Let’s keep it real: the 90s and early 00s were a better time in music AND the charts made more sense back then. Every few weeks, Billboard is adding some kind of random new tweek to the way they tabulate. It’s becoming convoluted and totally ridiculous.

      • Mizuki March 27, 2014

I agree with the music part, but the chart part no. They were being manipulated as well, and to a great extent might I add.

  22. Rosie March 27, 2014

This will be more useless than the Social 50.

    • Mimi Carey March 27, 2014

Or more useless then Lanas vocals?

      • Rosie March 27, 2014

Or more useless than You’re Mine on the charts?

      • Mimi Carey March 27, 2014

You’re mine actually charted on US charts unlike 99.9 % of Lanas songs kiiiii.

      • Rosie March 27, 2014

And it also plummeted off of every chart in 2 seconds unlike 99.9% of Lana’s singles.

  23. Mimi Carey March 27, 2014

Beyonce fans need to shut the hell up for once.

    • lmao March 27, 2014

Mariah carey fans need to go and buy you’re mine for once

  24. Rosie March 27, 2014

This Moo stan is trying it a bit.
    iTunes USA:
1470. Mariah Carey – You’re Mine (Eternal) [feat. Trey Songz] [Remix]

  25. Skyfall March 27, 2014

    This is so pointless

  26. Sundayluv March 27, 2014

As if it weren’t already a popularity contest

  27. Stephy March 27, 2014

THE HOT 100 SHOULD BE DICTATED BY WHO HAS THE HIEGHEST SELLING SINGLE OF THAT WEEK!!!

    Not Airplay
    Not Streaming
    Not Twitter
    Not Facebook

For Example: If Rihanna’s “Stay” is the most purchased single of that week then it should be the NUMBER 1 HIT on the Billboard Hot 100!

Ugh, Billboard is fuckking up & making s*** WAY TOO EASY FOR THESE SHITT STARS LIKE SELENA & JUSTIN BIEBER!

    • Rosie March 27, 2014

No shade but you know the girl in your avi’s last #1 hit was mainly because of streaming right?

      • Stephy March 27, 2014

Wrong! Madonna’s last number 1 hit on the HOT 100 USA was in 2000 with “Music” streaming was not around during that time! Bye Ho!

Also, your girl will NEVER get a number 1 hit.

        Bow Down To Queen Madonna!

      • Rosie March 27, 2014

Oh sorry! I thought that was Miley’s German Vogue spread. I was like “When the f*** did this b**** start stanning Viley?”
Your avi is really blurry, I would suggest changing it to .png.

      • FutureCIARA March 28, 2014

No Bittch thats just your cheap E-machines computer that you bought from craigslist….

Her Madonna avi shows up clear and vivid on my macbook pro.

  28. Blue Ivy Carter-Rodriguez March 27, 2014

Didn’t “Can’t remember to purchase you” out peaked all of Ciara’s singles, Xno, Love s** and partition?

People buy Rihanna’s music, where are all those Beyoncé fans that bought her first CD that apparently sold 11 million? Isn’t Ciara at home fretting because her baby bonus cheque didn’t come in the mail? Where do these trolls come from?

    • CzarM March 27, 2014

      “People buy Rihanna’s music”

LOL, really?! Is that why it took her seven albums to not only top the Billboard 200, but to also narrowly pass ten million in sales? Go peddle that nonsense to someone who doesn’t know any better. Rihanna’s sales are, have always been, and most likely will always be, in a word: pathetic.

  29. Avi March 27, 2014

Hits are on the radio, not computers.

  30. Navy Commander March 27, 2014

Lol but lanas last two singles remixes(and one reuglar) were in the top ten sooo….

  31. sherwin March 27, 2014

this is bad. we all know kids are the most active twitter users. i’m sure after this, one direction and kiddie pop stars will dominate the charts. *shudders*
