Before the likes of Mariah Carey and  Keri Hilson rock the charts with their new releases, Tamar Braxton and Ariana Grande do their part to uphold R&B with their new albums this year, heading to a milestone set to make the envy of a number of their genre mates.

How?

Details below!

Touching down on September 3rd 2013, Braxton’s second studio album ‘Love & War’ has now arrived at sales of 361,000 units, now just 139,000 units away from hitting the half a million mark!

Debuting with sales of 114,000 copies sold, the LP has moved 77,900 since its arrival, pushed by her Toni Braxton-fuelled Reality TV career, its Grammy-nominated lead single of the same name and her Sevyn Streeter-penned ‘All the Way Home’.

Elsewhere, 91,000 units separates Ariana Grande‘s ‘Yours Truly’ from Gold status, currently sat at the 409,000 mark after peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Official Chart’s R&B tally!

Really sam? I could see if they was going Gold next week but they not. Nobody care about that Flop Tamar even doe i love All the way home!!

  2. Mark111 March 8, 2014

Wait, how can you have the #1 album in the country, yet be #2 on the R&B chart? As much as I seen them on tv, they should be at or over the 1 million mark.

See Ciara and Kelly Rowland, your album will slowly sale if YOU support your own music.

  3. True March 8, 2014

That’s good for both of them for Tamar that’s amazing especially seeing the way that R&B sells these days she surpassed fantasia so congrats to them both now they need to tour and do more promo to get to that gold.

  4. Not A Flop March 8, 2014

People are so quick to say that Tamar is a flop but what other female R&B artist sold more then her last year nobody .R&B doesnt sell like it used to so for her to be at that much so far is amazing.

In order for them to be taken seriously as artists it’s important their albums go Gold BEFORE they release new material, otherwise it’ll look like they’re just swiftly moving on to keep their name out there without commercial credibility (Kelly Rowland). Tamar has blighted her cause by being Head Drama Queen, ensuring that no matter how good her voice is she’ll never scale Toni’s heights. Ariana has been blasted for copying Mariah yet she’s an incredible singer with a great voice. Why did she stop releasing singles? Hopefully their tours will increase sales, Ariana did a great job with “I Have Nothing” better than Xtina’s version of “Run To You” by FAR!!!

Honestly, people throw the word flop around to much. How many R&B albums have gone gold in recent years. You can probably count them on your fingers. Unless you are established like Beyoncé or Alicia Keys or Usher doesn’t happen. Over 300k for an R&B album today not bad at all. Most R&B albums peak at around 250k. Tamar is doing well for herself.

As for Ariana, 409k is great when you look at the lack of promo she has done. The AMAs and VMAs did the most for her. Her album sales increased a lot after the AMAs proving that a lot of people still haven’t heard about her album yet or have ignored it because of her Nick status. Baby I got paid dust when it came to promo and Right There did too. Hopefully this next album has better and international promo. She has recently done promo in Japan and she’s already sold over 53k there (which is really good).

409k isn’t bad when you compare it to
Demi Lovato – DEMI: less then 350k in the US
Selena Gomez – Stars Dance: 360k

This is true!.. Ariana have better solds than Demi & Selena

Confused by the math here. “Love and War” total sales equal 361K. It debuted with 114K. 361K-114K = 247K

She’s sold 247K since its debut week, not 77K.

  9. TruthBeTold March 8, 2014

Okay so here the deal with Tamar if you want her album to go gold she’s gonna either have to release another single like love and war OR go on tour with a big act and drop another single otherwise 400k tops!!!!!

Let’s stop celebrating mediocrity like it’s some kind of an accomplishment. Being roughly 100k away from Gold after 6+ months is not a feat or something to give kudos for. And spare me the “for an R&B album” crap. It’s attitudes like that that keep standards low. That’s like celebrating a failing student almost pulling their GPA to a D+. Get real. You can do better than that.

With all the hype they’ve gotten, Ariana, Tamar, Ciara, Miguel, Frank and the rest of them should be at least platinum. Not sitting at 250-550k. Expect better and maybe people will do better.

The problem is that these acts of today spend virtually all their time trying to appeal to a viral audience; they do all these blog interviews, spend all their time trying to connect with an audience of social networks, act as if VEVO numbers are something to chase after. Get your ass on TV and in print. The old fashion, grass roots way is how you move units. Ask Adele.

I think Ariana Grande’s debut might go Gold, which is okay in today’s music industry album sales climate.
Tamar might go gold as well,Tamar is at her 26th week and is #57 on the billboard 200
Ariana is at week 26 and is at #148.

Either or,just 10 years ago numbers like those got you dropped.Think of how many artist who did those same numbers years ago and got dropped feel now lol.

    Bionic

THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO TAKE OVER THE INTERNET!

These sales are horrible. It makes no damn seanse why Tamars album is stalling at 300+k

Love & War the song slayed. The Vocals, The Production & Lyrics SCREAMED NUMBER 1 HIT!!

Celebrating GOLD albums is not good. You cant really make a profit off of Gold Albums!

Makes me sick to see artist not getting the royalties & sales they oh so deserve!

  14. Navy Commander March 8, 2014

That shows than #1 albums don’t mean sh*t . Yours truly went to #1 and it’s barely gold after 7 months.

  15. Antonio March 8, 2014

Well regarding Ariana, her album barely had promo other than the VMAs, AMAs and GMA. The Way and Baby I were hot for like a month then faded away and Right There, a great spring/summer dance anthem, was released in October/November. She’s constantly compares to Mariah and has a very young fanbase of 12-16 yr old girls who aren’t buying albums but rather downloading songs so for her to be at 410k is decent but not great. Her single should’ve went The Way (April), album/Baby I (August), Tattooed Heart (November), Better Left Unsaid (March) then Right There (June). Open for a major artist like Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga with big endorsement to help push album sales.

Regarding Tamar, her album sales are decent as well. Love and War only peaked at #56 on the Hot 100, The One and All the Way Home did not chart on the Hot 100. Most ppl think she’s only famous because of her sister, which is partly true, but she should’ve started early marketing pushes to create her own identity. Her singles should’ve went Love and War (January), All the Way Home/album (April), Hot Sugar (August) then Pieces (November). Headline a spring promo tour to like 15-20 cities. Open for John Legend like she did. Get an endorsement deal with a major Urban product like Keyshia Cole did with Steve Madden because that helped her album from 280k to nearly 400k.

To all the ppl saying the state of R&B isn’t an excuse are stupid af. Traditional R&B like Tamar, Brandy, Fantasia and John is commercially dead to mainstream America. 20 yrs ago, Tamar and Brandy would be pushing 2x platinum and Ciara would’ve been multiplatinum. To mainstream white America, R&B is artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake. Yes, they make R&B songs at time, but they’re not R&B artists, they’re more of urban pop artists, but anyways, R&B will never make a mainstream comeback

iT’S ACTUALLY GREAT FOR AN RNB ARTIST TO SAN ALMOST 500K WHEN YOU NOT BEYONCE OR ALICIA K

  17. anonymous March 8, 2014

Good for you tamar. Im happy for you. You too Ariana. I like both of them. some of yall didnt wanna believe me when I said she sold over 350k well here’s your proof.

  18. WizKey March 9, 2014

Spare me the excuses. Both Ariana and Tamar are doing TERRIBLE in album and single sales. Record companies don’t release albums for them to struggle sell under 500k. That’s not “decent,” that’s a waste of time and money. Ariana and Tamar both have machines behind them, so there’s no excuse — NONE — for them to not be at least platinum (and IMO merely “platinum” isn’t all that impressive). They need to get their s*** together and figure out a way to move some REAL numbers, or find another line of work.

  19. Trace March 9, 2014

I don’t find these sales figures to be at all good or even barely decent. Unless you’re a legend with millions upon millions sold from past releases and a back catalog with titles that sell do healthy sales, 300-400k is embarrassing and should be enough to either get an artist dropped or put on notice that next time out they *must* do substantially better, or face the consequences.

That being said, lightening doesn’t always strike the first time. So I wouldn’t be so quick to lynch them for these poor returns this time. But they better do more than 2x better than this with their next albums to make up for it…

  20. anonymous March 9, 2014

@Wizkey um yes these sales are decent for an R&B artist. machine or no machine, r&b does not sale anymore, it so selling more than 350k today is rare and good. most r&b artists couldnt reach that amount. everybody was congratulating Keyshia cole when she sold more 350k, but when Tamar and Ariana sold that, yall call it a flop.

  21. Antonio March 9, 2014

@Wiskey you sound dumb as hell. Usher, Ciara, Brandy, Monica, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and even Toni Braxton, all who’ve multiplatinum albums and #1 have seen huge sales decreases. 5 yrs, Girl on Fire would’ve sold in the 350k range in the 1st wk, it did only 160k even tho Girl on Fire (single) was a Top 10 hit on the Hot 100 and Alicia had a huge promo push, the album has only sold 725k to date and only another 750k internationally. Usher last 3 were all commercially disappointments, selling less each time. Looking 4 Myself is his best reviewed album and Climax was his most critically acclaimed single. It reached the Top 20 on the Hot 100 and spent over 10 wks at #1 on the R&B/HH charts and Scream peaked in the Top 10, but the album sold just 125k in the 1st wk and only 495k overall. Ciara had a decent promo campaign but had the highest charting R&B song of the year with Body Party and only did 60k the 1st. R&B is dead outside the Urban markets and even there it’s failing. That’s why artists like Fantasia, Ariana, Tamar, Keyshia, John, Weeknd, Miguel, Frank Ocean doing over 300k is praised

    WHO??????

  23. I digress September 22, 2014

R and B albums are not considered successful only if white America buys it…True R and B is celebrated in urban communities all over America regardless if white America appreciates it or not…both Tamar and Ariana had good albums. Tamar songs are catalogue worthy…she will be singing Pieces, White Candle, All the way Home, Love Nd War for decades as part of her catalogue…Ariana’s Baby I, not so much….I wish Ariana had her own identity other than a baby Mariah or this little girl with ribbons and ponytails tryna sing about grown folks business.
