Jermaine Dupri Weighs In On Katy Perry…For Mariah Carey

Fickle.

Thanks to the music industry’s fickle nature, ‘seasoned’ acts oft find their positions in today’s world questioned at the first sight of a younger, hotter and seemingly more exciting alternative.

In 2006, much to the horror of both she and then partner Jermaine Dupri, the campaign for Janet Jackson‘s ’20 Y.O’ found itself dominated by a then 25 year old Beyonce, as the media questioned Jackson’s ability to compete with the stage-blazing chart topper.

Indeed, by way of the comparisons, the album’s trend-kissing material and 2004’s ‘Super Bowl’ fiasco, ‘20′ cowered in the face of ‘B’, selling 297,000 units in first week…two weeks after the latter moved 541,000 copies in the very same market.

Then, Dupri sought out to remind the world that the ladies ‘weren’t on the same plane‘, and now- eight years later- history repeats itself.

Whose legacy Jermaine has been forced to defend this time? Mariah Carey‘s.

All those hits and she can’t even chart on itunes? JD better wake up and smell the coffee and lower his ego because this new Mimi album is going to flop like crazy and her ego won’t be able to take it

    • soulmusiclover April 6, 2014

who cares?? she’s a legend with numerous classics! she has done enough for music! don’t disrespect real artists with real talents please!

    • soulmusiclover April 6, 2014

who cares?? she’s a legend with numerous classics! she has done enough for music! don’t disrespect real artists with real talents please! katy’s music is a joke ! idgaf about her topping charts or whatever! she’s not an artist, her music has no substance whatsoever! get the quarter of mariah’s talent, songwritting skills and classic music befor opening your mouth!

  2. OVORobbie April 6, 2014

Worrying about the past when he should be looking to the future. 200 million isn’t much when everyone knows about the payola dude.

  3. Mark111 April 6, 2014

When this album flops, JD will get ALL the blame. Just like with Janet and they have a point.

  4. BeyBeyKing April 6, 2014

Facts are facts but this is why Mariah’s head is so big and why nobody likes her anymore. MJ never had to remind people about his sales because we KNEW what time it was ALL the time. The fact is that Mimi can’t sing like she used to and can’t make music like she used to so she clings to the past because it’s all she has going for her.

  5. Benji April 6, 2014

Lol why is it anyone associated with Mariah always seems so pressed and insecure lmao. No matter what receipts they throw around they still come across insecure af about her legacy. It is what is get over it. Mariah really mustve been seething over that Katy Perry shade on TV.

  6. Rosie April 6, 2014

LOL Jermaine Durpi? What is this, 2004? No one cares about him anymore.

  7. cake like lady gaga April 6, 2014

This site layout is tacky, like something I would expect from a canadian developer or on a Lame Drunk Rey webpage.

    Ugh sam, fix this mess!!!

    • Rosie April 6, 2014

      G.A.Y. Worldwide iTunes:
      #312 United States
      #340 South Africa

  8. WeAreLambily April 6, 2014

I’m so happy TGJ remembered what happened back in 06 because the same thing is happening now. JD’s ego is so big that he can’t see when he’s been beaten. Janet flopped because she can’t sing and instead of accepting it he made her believe her career was as it was in 93 and that was wrong.

Her head got so big that she shaded B on the Angie Martinez show and ended up flopping harder than a fish out of water and hasn’t put out an album since then.

Ignore Katy and the haters and GET TO WORK. Stop thinking about what Mimi did in the 90s because a new day has come!

  9. KatyKadet April 6, 2014

Loooooooool! The insecurity is so real.

  10. My Gums Tho(aka Teacher) April 6, 2014

I think I love you! One of the few on here that knows the difference between then and than. Yaaasssss! Thank you!

  11. QueenCeline April 6, 2014

It all makes so much sense now. Mariah knows exactly how she sold that many records and how easy it was for TM to sabotage her when he signed Lopez so she has a complex about younger it girls because she knows how easy it is for people to forget about her.
Poor thing, no wonder Nicki had her so pressed on Idol.

  12. smh April 6, 2014

How is it ignorance? Katy broke Mariah’s records, therefore dethroning her on that chart. Those are the numbers, the end. S*** like this is why Mariah is so damn insecure and won’t grow up and act like the legend that she is. Stop looking at what these new artists are doing today and focus on putting out good material.
No one can take away from what you have done as an artist, so why you mad? Chart records are there to be broken.
In a few years Rihanna is going to snatch that Most #1s record from Mariah (and eventually from the beatles too), but does that take away from their contribution to music? No. You are a legend, Grow up.

    • JanetXone April 6, 2014

Thank you dear. You spoke the gospel truth. Mariah holds onto records because she is insecure about her voice and it’s starting to show.

    • FAF April 6, 2014

Y’all are speaking too soon. Rihanna has 13 #1s she still needs 5 more.. thats a lot.. thats not like 2 songs

      • Metzo April 6, 2014

But Rihanna has 13 #1’s less than 10 years on her career. MARIAH has 18 in 20 years. I think Rihanna will break Mariahs records of #1’s.. Just Sayin’….

    • Tyler April 6, 2014

Katy Perry broke ONE record. ONE record. ONLY on the pop chart. by ONE week. I’m sick of these younger artists and their fans thinking they can dethrone artists who have drastically CHANGED the industry. Let’s see her sell 200 Million and attain 18 #1 hits on the hot 100. Break THAT record and we’ll talk.

Mariah is insecure. YES. But if you watched the end of the video where they play Dark Horse side by side with another song, you would see how basic and recycled Katy Perry’s music is, Jermaine proves it RIGHT there.

So enough with SAM and some of you people here trying to make Mariah Carey out to be the next Janet Jackson. Because we know the only reason we’re having this conversation is because Mariah is the only older artist who has proven that she can still get a hit in today’s industry (i.e #beautiful). Mariah Carey has proven her relevancy time and time again when the odds have been stacked against her.

So we’re all the waiting to see if it happens again…she’s merely one hit away from being back on top. She just needs to focus on MUSIC. NOT diva-ness.

      • ronnoc April 6, 2014

i believe you found mariah’s problem in that last sentence… she will never regain her relevancy because she will never stop with the entitled, diva persona. people aren’t here for that s***, the end.

  13. Lana Del Slay April 6, 2014

Damn son, you are SOOOOOOOOO insecure.

  14. WhenItComesToBey April 6, 2014

So sad, so VERY sad. Your new single can’t even chart on itunes but you’re worried about something Katy Perry said that was ACTUALLY true. Quincy NEVER EVER had to remind people about MJ’s credentials because that would have been tacky but it’s so clear that Mariah is STUCK IN THE PAST because her yes people are JEALOUS of the new girls.

  15. Anon April 6, 2014

I’m about to do a test on here y’all, this s*** isn’t spam but press 1 beneath this comment if you wanna see what happens when I type Trey Songz is gay on here.

    • LaLopez April 6, 2014

Girl stop, we already know what will happen.

    • AubreyOSlay April 6, 2014

It only works when you put in the link to that Lipstick Alley story. Watch.

      • HistoRih April 6, 2014

Can you not? And what kind of horrible people are you? Why do you care about what Trey does in his personal life?

  16. Anon April 6, 2014

I’m a singer/rapper and former member of “Songbook Ent.” Trey Songz imprint, managed by Troy Taylor (He wrote “Holla When You Need Me” and many other of trey’s records). I was a part of Songbook ent. in 2006, around the time Trey had begun recording “Trey Day”. I recorded a few records at Songbook studios, at Troy Taylors house in a small city in Texas, and observed Troy and his relationship with Trey and Brandon Hines. Before I was even a part of Songbook, Troy asked me alot of weird questions about my future over the phone and even asked me about my sexual preference. I told him I’m straight and he said I need to be sure of that because this industry can make you do things you “wouldn’t normally do”. He asked the same bizarre questions to my producer, which struck us both as weird, as this was just an example of the odd things he would ask of us. Troy says he saw Brandon Hines in the audience at a show singing the words to all trey’s songs and from there, Brandon would end up living with Troy. When I recorded at Songbook studios, Brandon lived in Troys house. They had a very bizarre relationship. He told me of Brandon and Trey going to the movies together and continued to make me feel uncomfortable with the way he spoke of the relationship between the 3 of them. His wife was NEVER home when I came over, but Brandon was always there, he even came downstairs in a towel the first time I was introduced to him. There are many up and coming artists Troy seemingly turns out, and he calls his little program “Troy Taylor University”, I had alot of odd vibes between those 3, when I saw the article on B*****.com about Trey and Brandon, I figured I should stand up and let people know it’s not a rumor, it’s 100% true and the reason I’m no longer with Songbook…

People should know Trey ain’t the ladies man people think he is, and anybody who gets “offers” from either of them to work with Songbook, don’t expect to excel in your career, it’s some weird homo trap he’s trying to get you in.

The author of the letter also sent evidence to prove that he was indeed part of Songbook.

    any new tea?

    • Tremangel April 6, 2014

      What’s your problem?

      • DeruloDiva April 6, 2014

        That story isn’t true though.

    • Keri Krew Kween April 6, 2014

Enough of the B.S “Trey is Gay” stories. No one is buying them. Stop trying to make your fantasy a reality. He’s not gay. And if he was we don’t care.

  17. VisionofMimi April 6, 2014

    Thanks a f****** lot JD. Thanks a f****** lot.

  18. cake like lady gaga April 6, 2014

The real mess is the f*** removing my first comment.

Yes Sam, the writer of this post tried too hard. This post is more tacky than tacky itself.

  19. CherylSoldier April 6, 2014

Death at the delusion. Screaming at
Dupri’s flustered responses. If she wants to
Compete with today’s girls, she needs to
Make better music. Focusing on the voice is gonna
See her flop harder than Candice Glover

  20. Skyfall April 6, 2014

Mariah still has selling power as well,(with the right songs of course ) when Ariana Grande song The Way came out on radio everyone (who didn’t know who she was of course) thought it was Mariah Carey, and most people went to purchase with the thought of Mariah in mind. The single sold on the fact that it sounded like Mariah and then the hype around her being the “new” Mariah after the hype did so did her sales no other song peaked in the top 10 or top 20 and her album is struggling for gold and has already fallen of the BBHOT 100 even Tamar is still on there. Mariah would of been platinum by now

    • Keri Krew Kween April 6, 2014

Lol! Ariana’s album has been outselling Tamar’s album on a weekly basis since day one. The Way was a hit because it was her lead single and her most promoted song. Last time I checked it went 2x platinum months after the MC comparisons started. Baby I went to #1 on iTunes and peaked at 21 so that’s not really a flop. She paid that song total dust and neglected the 3rd single too. Her album is struggling because of poor management. Tbh, I blame Bieber. They share the same manager and he was too busy trying to save Journeys from flopping to push Ariana right. But notice how the hype came roaring back after that AMA performance?

  21. JOHNVIDAL April 6, 2014

Why are you guys so desperate to insult people? This guy is giving an opinion in an irrelevant show, and for that you have to call Mariah Carey or any person who likes her insecure??? If anybody was wrong it was Katy Perry when she shaded Mariah, she was feeling herself too much, but it really doesn´t matter cos Katy loves Mariah probably, it was a moment, and you people should forget things like that. Like enjoy the music and stop the stan wars, you are missing a lot.

  22. JOHNVIDAL April 6, 2014

This new TGJ lay out is pretty nice (small avis aside), but are the thumbs up and down buttons working at all. They don´t work for me.

    • Rosie April 6, 2014

      They work on mobile.

  23. Theman April 6, 2014

Y’all are a bunch of idiots. This man was correct. Mariah has longevity. Katy did not dethrone MC she can’t.. Mariah is not a new artist.. Katy is a hot recent artist. Her number ones are cool but she isn’t moving too many units with them.. Mariah dominates on all facets.. Y’all are haters, and just try to slander Mariah’s greatness for simple ish.. Mariah is that chick.. All MC needs is a huge radio hit.. She sold her records through her enormous talent & hard work.. ITunes isn’t always really the biggest factor.. JD was absolutely on with this.. Lol @ Bey stans, get her another hit..

  24. FAF April 6, 2014

So are you insinuating that he was wrong for saying theres no comparison between Beyonce and Janet? Janet started black pop music for females.

    • Avi April 6, 2014

Janet did not “start” black pop music for females! LOL
How old are you? Before there was Janet, there was Diana, Donna, Tina, etc., etc. Janet didn’t do anything bigger than what Whitney was doing at the same time.

      • FAF April 6, 2014

^THOSES ARE NOT POP STARS TINA SINGS ROCK LMAOOO DIANA SANG SOUL MUSIC WITH THE SUPREMES.. WHITE PPL MADE IT INTO POP BUT IT WAS NOT SONICALLY POP . THAT WAS MOTOWN

        how old r u hunni ?

      • Avi April 6, 2014

Idiot. Diana Ross was NOT generally “soul music.” Aretha was soul. Patti was soul. Natalie Cole was soul. Diana Ross was pop. She doesn’t even have that kind of voice or performance style to pull off soul music. Most of her hits were lightweight ditties that were as catered to pop for her time as Janet’s were during hers. Again, how old are you? If you think Janet started ANYTHING in that regard, then I have a burning bridge to sell your dumb ass. It’s late, get ready for bed. You have school in the morning.

  25. FAF April 6, 2014

Idc, I’m glad he spoke up. the world needs to see music comes from black ppl my boo – ci used

crunk music which ci did, now u got white ppl trying to be ratchet

u got ppl discrediting janet but listen to beyonce.. where do u think beyonce got her inspiration to be a global star from?

    ppl need to research HISTORY

i dislike kim bc she’s catty, but i still understand she (and many others) helped female hip hop go WORLDWIDE

da brat was the first female rapper to go platinum

    • Rihyeezy April 6, 2014

But lil Jon started that crunk music.
Stop tryna include Ciara in stuff. She can’t sit with us

      • FAF April 6, 2014

^ LIL GIRL, PLZ STOP RESPONDING TO ME.. I DONT WANT MY COMPUTER TO GET A V**** U NAVI CARRY H*****

& SIS CAN EVEN RIHANNA SIT WITH HER PROLAPSED A***? LIL JON PRODUCED FOR CI & WORKED ON HER DEBUT

U Q***** ARE SO PRESSED OVER THE PRINCESS BEING THE FIRST ‘CRUNK N B’ FEMALE

        DONT BE MAD, UGLY 😆

        THERES LIFE BEFORE 08, F***

      • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) April 6, 2014

@Faf lmao. You didn’t have to drag her that hard. Loool

  26. Jewel April 6, 2014

Why are mariah fans always trying to force her accomplishmens down our throats. Its such a turnoff. That includes Jermain flopree. FACT is Katy DID surpass Mariah deal. Gosh. If its not that serious why getting mad?

  27. Tha truth April 6, 2014

He was right about Janet. She is pop royalty. She paved the way for beyonce. Beyonce lives in the house that Janet built. And where beyonce is now janet has already been. Beyonce’s greatest hits album would send people to sleep. Average music. Please bring back destinys child. At least their songs had a TUNE!

  28. Unbiased April 6, 2014

Please don’t insult Bey, she has given credit to the legends that have paved the way for her. She has cited Janet as an influence, MJ and Tina repeatedly! It’s not her fault Janet’s career plummeted after the Superbowl. I love Janet, but Bey is accomplishing things Janet couldn’t. Her current tour is the fifth highest grossing female tour of all time! The only black female artist on the list. The media was trying to push Janet out, by creating Britney(white janet) long before Bey came out as a solo artist!

    • JOHNVIDAL April 6, 2014

Hmm prices go up constantly. Obviously the recent big tours gross more than the big tours from 20 years ago! Are you serious? That´s why Madonna will always keep breaking her own touring records.
The same happens with films, Avengers and other recent supposed record breakers are not the most successful films ever, Gone with The Wind from 1939 is! Inflation my dear. You have to adjust.

      • Unbiased April 6, 2014

Inflate all you want. Point still remains Bey is in the Top five spot, Janet not in the top ten. Tina Turner’s highest grossing tour even outgrosses Janet’s.

      • Tha truth April 6, 2014

Too right. Janet’s ticket sales for the rhythm nation tour alone dwarf the mrs carter show and equivalent $$$ based on today’s ticket sales would be far higher. Let alone Janet’s other tours which were even bigger! As I said before where beyonce is janet has already been. She did it first and better.

      • Unbiased April 6, 2014

The house Janet built has been taken over, it happens all the time. Point still stands Bey has a 220,000,000+ grossing tour, Janet did not in her prime. If you inflate the MCWT in 15 years, it will be more than that. Janet didn’t build a brand like Madonna’s to be able to tour and sell out stadiums today. Bey will continue being a touring force when she’s out of her prime, which Janet can’t/couldn’t do.

      • Tha truth April 7, 2014

As mentioned Janet’s tours have all had higher ticket sales than beys meaning that $$ would be more based on inflation. It’s simple math. And when you start inflating beys tours in the future (which I’m sure you will do!) you will also have to inflate Janet’s. It’s simple math. And janet has been a touring force for 3 decades what are you talking about. Get back to me in 30 years and maybe we can’t talk. Joker.

      • JOHNVIDAL April 7, 2014

        @that truth
So sad people can´t comprehend simple concepts. See? People who believe Beyonce is the biggest thing ever and Avenegers the biggest film ever DO exist. So sad. They refuse to understand when it is explained to them. I don´t get it.

  29. Dontdoit April 6, 2014

It seems many of you confuse insecurity with reminding the younger generation exactly why she is revered as much as she is since many of you only respect sales. You children today are so quick to write off an ARTIST who has more sales, influence, talent, and longevity in the 2nd decade of her career than many of the entertainers you go so hard for. What many of you term “insecure” or “pressed” is indignation. itunes? Fool she has plaques for her accomplishments, u can keep itunes. I’m only a casual Mariah fan, but some of yall are just ridiculous. The disrespect is real.

    • Just sayin April 6, 2014

Its not going to work of you disrespect younger artists in the process. Young people aint here for it.

  30. Unbiased April 6, 2014

That’s the reason her album has been pushed back so much, focused on hits and competing with the younger pop girls. You are a legend! Just release music.

  31. cocobutta April 6, 2014

Mariah has a LEGACY and thats that!!!

  32. plot thicke April 6, 2014

I also don’t see why JD is so pressed about a comment Katy made weeks ago and has said nothing else about.
All this “all she needs is a big hit” is a bunch of bull. If Mariah and her people thought the album was going to sell, it would’ve been out by now. The problem is Mariah and her camp got super greedy they could’ve released an album around the time #Beautiful was still hot, instead they wanted another hit, a bigger one and a yr later we still don’t have an album as a result.
We might get an album this year, I doubt it though. Mimi is still probably mad Barbra Streisand out did her without a hit the last time she came out with an album.

  33. Truth April 6, 2014

It’s funny to me how all these fans count receipts for the artists that they stan for, yet if a Lamb does it they’re “clinging to the past”. Every artist that I’ve seen mentioned in this comments sections has had shady things said about them. For example, Rhinanna f**** for tracks, Beyoncé steals writing credits etc. Yet yall ignore that and just say Mariah used payola. Mariah has had many hits AFTER she left Tommy Mattola. She had the song of the decade for the 2000’s with We Belong Together. If she’s so old and needs to retire then why didn’t Beyoncé or Rhianna have the song of the decade ? They were both popular throughout the 2000’s. Yall just wanna hate cause it’s Mariah. Ibet whe you and your fave hit your 40’s you won’t think 40 is old anymore. Ageism at it’s worst.

  34. DGAF April 6, 2014

MC has spoken well of other artist. Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Mary J. Blige, Aretha, Patti, Glady, Beyoncé and Rhianna. What is she supposed to do ? Sit around and lick their assez ? Just cause she don’t sit around and talk about your faves constantly doesn’t mean she disrespects them. Grow up. Maybe YOU are insecure one here, not Mariah.

  35. Keri Krew Kween April 6, 2014

Records are meant to be broken so I don’t see the problem. Who cares? Katy is still a chart topper, Mariah still has her legacy. When Katy tied MJ’s record did that shatter his legacy? No. I don’t see any Katy stans bragging about it either. Mariah can’t compete with modern pop stars and she doesn’t need to. Certainly not Katy. I remember when she first started to pop off in 2008. Everyone thought Lady Gaga would be the Madonna/Britney and Katy was going to be the Cyndi Lauper/Christina Aguilera but I didn’t agree. Katy is the smartest girl in pop. She understands the game and plays it well. Everyone thinks she’s a ditzy puppet but I see through the fake act. She can be taken serious as an artist if she wants to, she has the musical capability. But she knows people arent checking for that so she sticks to making hits. Mariah is not it that spot anymore. She doesn’t need to focus on crafting hits to compete with Miley and Katy. IDC what anyone says, she has nothing to prove. I just want a classic album. F*ck the charts. Leave that to the current crowd.

  36. Mark111 April 6, 2014

Just now listened to the whole interview. He’s right, but that in all genres. Look at these boy bands now, do you remember the ones before? OK how bout the ones before them? In Black music, people try to dethron greats, on pop, they totally erase them. Where’s Christina Aguilera? Britney Spears? At least in black music, our legends stay legendary (except hip hop. Once you’re done there, you’re DONE (Ja Rule, Lil Kim, Nelly.) But in R&B, the greats always stayed thegreats.

Also, there’s a difference from career Vs career and current competition. You can’t replace MJ, Janet, Prince, Aretha, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, MJB and many others, but if they release an album around the same time as another or new artist, then yea, they’re gonna be compared to them. So MC will have to complete with the new girls, just like she was once the new girl and had to make her lane with ones before her (Whitney, Dion). Those girls was in the game 10 years before her, but they still stood their ground.

And it’s kinda karma, cause they did the same thing to Madonna with MC as well.

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) April 6, 2014

Delusions. Nothing you said makes senses.

  37. Touché April 6, 2014

I see no lies. Although I’m more concerned as to why ‘Dark horse’ broke this record out of all Katy’s songs. What was so special about that song in the first place? All her other hit songs seemed more catchy and interesting, granted they are still generic though.

  38. TJ April 6, 2014

But she did dethrone Mariah in that category. No one said she was more legendary than her. Just deal and stop being pressed. I don’t see MJs people, Whitney peoples, Janets people, Madonnas people etc doing the most like Mariahs people and fans do. Maybe its because they know there’s missing link there. Oh and another thing, for as long as Mariah releases music and tries hard to keep up with the young’uns (stripping in videos, collaborating with people who have young appeal etc) she will be compared. For as along as you release music you have something to prove, especially since you keep pushing your s*** back. Also dead at the singing comparison. Mariah can’t sing anymore dude.

  39. Realest April 6, 2014

    Mariah is legend

  40. The Boy Toy April 6, 2014

But didn’t Katy say Mariah inspired “Birthday”?

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) April 6, 2014

I think she said in one of her interviews that she wanted to make a song that sounded like Mariah’s first record.

  41. BITCHDONTWEARMYWEAVETHO April 6, 2014

I think Mariah’s album should be called TITANIC because b**** that album will sink on its release date!!!!!!

  42. Blue Ivy Carter-Rodriguez April 6, 2014

Who cares what Disney Perry says, the h** can’t even out sing a 12 year old kids bop vocalist. Her opinion and banshee/wedding singer vocals should be revoked and buried. Bye basic Perry

    • Stav April 6, 2014

Hey Slayriah. ~waves~ Back to using THAT name, huh? I see you remembered to punch in the right email addy this time. ROFLMAO!

      We ain’t forget…

    • Metzo April 6, 2014

Looll. SLAYRIAH is still here trolling yall!

    • Absolved April 7, 2014

After that humiliating episode last week, where you clumsily exposed yourself as a trolling fraud with multiple personalities and user names, shouldn’t you be somewhere hiding out in Siberia with your head hanging down? It’s hilarious that you’re back…posting under them both, and in the same comments section. LOL I can’t!

  43. Sass April 6, 2014

I didn’t hear of Quincy Jones having a meltdown when she tied that MJ record and people had the audacity to call her the female MJ. Jermima needs to sit her ass down.

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) April 6, 2014

But why are people blasting Mariah for what Jermaine said though?

But where did I blast Mariah though? In fact, where was Mariahs name even mentioned in my comment?

I’m not talking about you… I meant like the other people who left comments.

I’m not a Mariah Carey fan whatsoever, but JD actually made his point. As usual, the 7th grade bobble-heads here at TGJ see a headline and a slanted write-up designed to lure fools, and easily take the bait.

Dupri essentially said that when it was reported that Perry had broken MC’s total weeks at #1, some were ignorantly saying that she had “dethroned” her, and that’s what he took issue with. No one keeps their record forever; they are made to be broken…but even when that ultimately happens, the successor does not invalidate or “dethrone” the one they succeeded.

I hate that I’m defending Mariah, because I literally can’t stand her, but Katy Perry’s success in no way, shape or form eliminates or takes anything away from her (which is what most of you idiots are saying while complaining.)

He’s right though! You can’t dethrone Aretha, Michael, Diana, Whitney or Mariah….it is what it is!

But the nature of this industry now is to tear down our legends like they did Whitney!
