In a somewhat odd development, Mariah Carey is opening up about her new “surprise” album.
Though, one would, could, and should be forgiven for wondering why the diva is divulging details, it appears there’s rationale to the randomness.
Details below…
Speaking in the latest issue of Billboard Magazine (which hits stores next Monday), the 44-year-old confirms that her 14th studio album will be delivered in a way much different to prior releases.
Carey revealed that the “surprise” element will manifest in the fact that the LP’s title, tracklisting, artwork and music will all be released at once via to-be-announced digital partners — with a physical retail release expected the following week.
Speaking on the unique roll-out, which will naturally draw comparisons to Beyonce’s last December, Mimi said:
“I have to be the one that announces this, especially the title,” Carey says, noting that the album takes its name from a “personal possession of mine that’s part of an entity that I’ve had almost all my life.”
Additionally, as well as stressing that (contrary to rumors) the album will not be her last, the married mother of two acknowledged the lack of success the project’s singles have enjoyed thus far. Indeed, despite ‘Beautiful (ft. Miguel)’ becoming a bonafide hit by peaking at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 last Spring, subsequent efforts ‘Almost Home’, ‘The Art Of Letting Go’, and most recently ‘You’re Mine (Eternal)’ have failed to catch fire.
Regarding the rocky-road the set’s singles have treaded down, an except from the feature reads:
Carey will cop to a few of the pre-release singles not doing as well as past hits, pausing to note that 2013’s Stargate-produced “Almost Home” was intended for the “Oz, Great and Powerful” soundtrack. “You would think I would be all about the singles-driven situation, and I am in a way, but with this particular album I want my fans to hear it as a body of work,” she says. “This is my life since we last left off. Just picture a dot dot dot, and then here’s the album.” {Source}
Again, interesting.
Given all that’s transpired prior to the LP’s release, this could either go amazing well and serve as quite the redeemer or tank terribly. At this point, the pendulum doesn’t seem to be swinging strongly in either direction.
The project’s initial success will ultimately hinge on the roll-out. Who is the “digital partner”? How much exclusivity is it being given? Will it be a Beyonce-like takeover with all banners globally plugging the project?
Long-term, the material will have to connect with the masses. In Mariah’s predicament, it’s the music that will give the album arms and legs to maintain beyond the launch window.
Perhaps most importantly, though, Ms. Carey will need to stop with the almost comical live performances and really WOW people again. It’s her strongest card and one she hasn’t been playing for years. Put simply, she’ll need to do away with the cringey lip-synching and dresses that are clearly designed to distract from lacking vocals, and really truly wow people with her voice. “The” voice.

Mariah Carey was drowning in a sea of alcohol – that’s the tragic secret behind her shocking recent mental breakdown and hospitalization. The s*** songbird went on a nonstop booze binge for days before finally collapsing and being rushed to a psychiatric hospital by police in late July.
Mariah’s publicist stated she was hospitalized because of “an emotional and physical breakdown”, but that is only part of the story, an Enquirer investigation has found. “Mariah’s drinking was totally out of control,” revealed a close pal of the singer. “She drank around the clock, switching from champagne to hard liquor, and guzzling anything she could get her hands on.
She drank until she passed out. All she wanted to do was drink. Shortly before her collapse her staff got her up and ordered her breakfast in a desperate attempt to get her ready for a scheduled appearance at a Long Island shopping mall. But Mariah refused to eat and instead cracked open a bottle of champagne, insisting, ‘This is what I need to relax – this will get me through the day.’
Then as soon as she got into the limo on the way to the mall, she insisted on drinking brandy. By the time she got to the wall, she was incoherent and her publicist had to grab the microphone out of her hands to stop her.”
Five days later, after the well-publicized breakdown in a New York hotel, she was rushed to the psychiatric unit of Northern Westchester Hospital Center. She then left there and went into rehab at the posh Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Conn.
But the diva’s alcohol problem has been gradually developing over the past several years, says another insider. “At first, Mariah would only take a few sips of wine or champagne at different functions just to be polite. But slowly she began to drink more and more and few glasses turned into a few bottles. She started bringing wine into the music studio to record and telling her manager it helped keep her vocal chords pliable,” according to a pal.
“She’s also been drinking two bottles of wine a night for much of the last year, and in recent months, she’s increased that amount to drown her pain from her breakup with Luis Miguel. Mariah knew something was wrong and she did try to sober up by going to AA meetings with a girlfriend in Pacific Palisades. But it didn’t work because as soon as the meeting were over, Mariah and her girlfriend would drive home and drink wine.”
However, since entering rehab, Mariah has much improved. “It’s amazing how in just a few days Mariah’s spirits have elevated,” said the insider. When she was first admitted she was suicidal, but she’s already very positive. Added the insider, “She’s fast becoming the old Mariah we all know and love. She will be attending drug and alcohol classes to learn more about her problem. Hopefully in a few months Mariah will be as good as new.”

Its kinda narrow-minded to say this is a ‘beyonce’-type release. It’s not. This is the way album releases went before the internet & social media. A release date would be given, then no more details until the actual day of release. Beyonce’s release was a total surprise, but even then it wasn’t anything groundbreaking because David Bowie had already done the ‘surprise album’ a couple of times in the past. Its refreshing to know that Mariah is going back to her roots in a sense, and releasing her album the way it was done in the past. At first I was worried, but now I can see her having success with this album. Can’t wait!
