For Mariah Carey and her legion of Lambs, today is the day.
Almost five years have passed since the diva’s last LP hit stores and seven since she released a commercially successful effort. However, today sees the 44-year-old make a bid to reverse her fortunes with the arrival of her 14th studio album – ‘Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse’.
Given the dizzy heights of her star, anticipation is naturally high for the project. Yet, more than any of Carey’s past opuses, buzz for the ‘#Beautiful’ led set comes with a side-helping of caution.
After all, the album has suffered a myriad of missed release windows dating back to 2012. Then, of course, there’s the endless list of preceding singles – few of which managed to impact the Billboard Hot 100 (or the Bubbling Under Chart, for that matter). To rub salt into the proverbial wound, hope was further dashed when an exciting “surprise” roll-out was scrapped in favor of a traditional release.
Put simply, a mucky mess.
And yet, the mother of two has staged remarkable clap-back by delivering her strongest body of work since 2005 mega-seller ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’.
Boasting production from the likes of Jermaine Dupri, Mike Will, Hit-Boy, and Big Jim Wright, ‘The Elusive Chanteuse’ skilfully sews together the soulful sounds that have underpinned many of Mimi’s brightest musical moments. The result? A sonically stellar backdrop which allows “that” iconic voice to take centrestage and shine bright. Indeed, despite decades of acrobatics having shaved power off the songbird’s famed range, Mariah still possesses an unparalleled ability to soar to vocal heights that still astound.

I streamed it on spotify. It is a great album. Kinda picks up where ‘Emancipation’ left off. My favorite track is ‘Meteorite’. Only downers would be ‘Thirsty’ (too obvious that its supposed to cater to the younger audience), and ‘One More Try’ (NOBODY can touch a George Michael song except George Michael).
I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Absolutely amazing album. Expected nothing less from the Goddess of vocals. To answer the question though no, I don’t expect the masses to go out and buy good music. Adele was an error in the matrix that I don’t see happening too often in today’s market.

I bought the album on Google Play this morning to listen while I’m at work. It truly is a masterpiece. It shows her as a person, instead of a diva. Yes, there diva moments (hence the title), but you can see there is a very likeable, silly person behind the heavily OVERBLOWN diva image. 10/10 (The interlude-like connecting the songs is a good look)

The Ray Of Light, because its nothing but the truth & speaks volumes about life as human & as an individual. Something about that album is haunting, spiritual & scary all at the same time. Almost, like reading “THE SECRET” by Rhonda Byrne. The album is not as in dept about life & law of attraction as “The Secret” but it gives me that type of vibe. I also, like how the songs flow together. The production is sick & ahead of its time.

So hard! Anyway, Mine is probably The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson. I loved that the songs were so relatable to me at the time and had a message of loving oneself through life’s hardships. Plus, it’s production and lyrics are stellar. I can play it over and over again. Other picks include D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar and Aaliyah’s AALIYAH.

Wow, where is Craig David these days? He was dope when he came out in 1999. I loved that album too. It was voted second best album of all time behind MJ’s “Thriller” by the UK public.

I will be purchasing. Granted, I’m not a Mariah fan per se. I do have her greatest hits, Daydream, Butterfly and The Emancipation of Mimi but I listened and I really enjoyed it. My immediate picks were Faded, You Don’t Know What To Do, Meteorite, Camouflage and Money. Sure, her vocals are not what they used to be but she sounds great nonetheless. I have a lotta respect for Mimi and I hate that people give her sh*t because she doesn’t sell like she used to. Ffs, she’s been at it for 20+ years. If you cannot respect her art at least give credit to her LONGEVITY because at the rate at which some of these new girls are going, they won’t be heard of 5 years from now.

But I bought the physical copy in target where it was a huge banner of the album cover so I do believe how people are saying it’s out of stock. This is Mariah’s first orginal work this decade. But meteorite and money are my faves right now. I do like the George Michael cover she stuck to the original and didn’t overssing it. But don’t worry once Mariah’s hits that world music awards stage her sales will bump up some more. Then she has an nbc special on Friday! The exaggeration is real! Mariah’s album is no better than alot of recent releases including Beyonce’s. Doesnt surprise me though,especially when the people saying it, are talking about basic ass albums are classics. Someone even said I Look To You better than today’s music and that album was a steaming pile of vocal damage mess!
This album will struggle for gold and fall off the charts quickly like last time, even though its a solid body of work. I can see its a wrap winning for Best R&B Performance in feb! Her and Mary did that!

I absolutely agree. Mariah is far more relevant today in her 25th year in the business that than her peers from the 90’s like Celine, Janet, Madonna or Whitney(for obvious reasons…). To compare her to these artist in their 20’s like Ariana or someone like Beyonce when she far past her prime is honestly flattering to me.
I bought my copy on Amazon a couple hours ago. She hasn’t sounded this good since the early 90’s TBH. Little Miss Ariana is probably running to redo her whole album because of how amazing Mimi sounds LMAO. I like her music but can’t take those weak, lack of enunciation ass vocals that she delivers. Like b****, clear your throat and pronounce LMAO.
