One week after its arrival, Ariana Grande‘s ‘My Everything‘ has topped the Billboard 200, now standing as the US’ highest selling album of the week.

However, with multiple smash hits to her name this year, there’s no doubt the number of units it moved will part opinion today, with some set to congratulate her for outperforming her debut LP ‘Yours Truly’, while others may find the digits a little unimpressive for an act as widely celebrated as she is.

What she did?

Find out below!

168,000 units.

‘Hits Daily Double’ reports:

The album, which bowed at 168k, was pumped up by multiple major TV looks, including MTV’s VMAs, and massive radio play and big sales for “Problem” f/Iggy Azalea, which hit #1 at both Pop and Rhythm, “Break Free” f/Zedd and “Bang Bang” by Jessie J + Ariana +Nicki Minaj. It follows her 2013 debut full-length, Yours Truly, which raked in 138k in first-week sales last year.

So, baring the 182,000 units Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Ultraviolence’ moved without a ‘Problem’ or ‘Bang Bang’-sized hit in mind, we ask…

Did Ari underperform?

Not bad, after so many flops this year, these are good numbers. She may be a Rihanna and have to release annually. (That would be bad for her voice tho)

    • LB September 3, 2014

I can already hear the voice damage on the album, she is trying to hit those notes her voice cannot allow her to hit.

She’s heading to Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis vocal damage territory, only at a rapid pace.

      • vague September 3, 2014

Please provide specific examples where her voice sounds damaged on My Everything.

And I do see annual releases in her future, she is pretty much churning out hits, so she might be an annual release hit maker type of artist.

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Why did rihanna release annually? She didn’t need to imo.

    • Rihboy September 3, 2014

But unapologetic sold 238 000 in its first week. With only diamonds as the header?

    • Del Bey September 3, 2014

Excuse me you little parasite bottom, if this was lana you would drag (or try) lana done more than this b**** with no promotion and no exposure and you want to drag, shut your ugly trap from now on giving this girl props. K

    Damn she a flop

    • Sean September 4, 2014

Man, I think it’s idiotic how the entire US media tore down Gaga to a pulp for pulling in 253k, when the biggest buzzing artists this year all pulled in less than her.

      – Iggy – 52k
      – Lana – 182k
      – Sam Smith – 166k
      – Ariana – 168k

I’m no fan of Gaga’s, but I do think that the media owes her an apology. It’s like they got some sick and twisted rise out of running her into the ground. And yet nobody thinks of any of these other numbers as being subpar.

There needs to be an article about this on Billboard.

  3. doubline47 September 3, 2014

Cute number for her! But the album is already boring to me after 2 weeks of listening

    • UGH September 3, 2014

      It’s only been for a week…

    • GaGa’s Tampon September 3, 2014

      bootlegger

  4. LB September 3, 2014

First of all, I enjoyed the album, it was all over the place, unstructured and a rollercoaster ride without a coherent destination, but enjoyable non the less.

Secondly, I don’t think making the comparison with Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence is a fair comparison, Lana is in a niche market and moved 1 million units of Born this way, compared to hardly 500,000 units of Yours truly in a saturated pop market; Lana is expected to move over 100K easy considering the niche which is the market she is in.

On the other hand, Ariana is in a highly saturated, highly competitive pop market, which is difficult for any artist to succeed in, even with hits. If we are to make a fair comparison, we should compare Ariana with her competitors. 168,000 is not a bad figure compared to,

Selena Gomez – Stars Dance – 97,000 units

    Demi Lovato – Demi – 110,000 units

    Zendaya – Zendaya – 7,000 units

with only Miley outdoing her with over 200,000 units of Bangerz (Can’t be tamed sold about 300K till date).

So yes, she did underperform but this is an improvement from her previous effort “Yours truly”. Granted the album is off to a slow start, but with any race, it’s not how you start but how you finish. Listening to this album, Ariana does have the hits to keep the momentum of this album going.

    • LB September 3, 2014

      *Born to die

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Totally agree. People need to keep in mind that Ariana is really only a year old. All of her peers were well known and had fan bases. This is very solid for her second release. Teenage dream tease.

      • LB September 3, 2014

That is a good point, the others have been around longer, save for Zendaya, and she had to build from her base of Yours Truly, only a year after release with no hits from that album.

I guess the issue people have is in comparison to the promo campaign, the albums are not reflective of the effort put in; but these numbers are decent IMO, she can still build from this and score her first platinum album.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

She better release love me harder as a single. I’m also here for one last time. She has so many choices on this album that it can easily be a teenage dream/loud type of album. She has scooter too, who will push it til it’s dead.

    • Niko Ramos September 3, 2014

I agree its not a fair comparison. Lana and Ariana are in different markets. I was expecting higher sales to be honest, but still great sales for her and the market and audience she is targeting, and its a #1 album. And also lets make not that she topped her previous sales, so if she is bettering herself that’s what really matters. But damn I’m reminiscing the days when albums sold 1.000.000 in their opening weeks (Britney’s ‘Oops’ Album). Exciting days and moments for pop music!

    • SURPRISE…….(DEC.13) September 3, 2014

Long story short!!!!! The number is kind of a flop,it did not do the kind of numbers i was expecting from her, i mean d girl had like three of the biggest hits on the chart all at once, in addition with the amount of promo she did….Even katy did not have this much promo for teenage dream before it came out except for her hits. if she did over 200k dat would have been better. But hopefully d album has a slow burn effect..

      • Proud-Arianator September 3, 2014

girl bye! you clearly don’t know what you are talking about Katy had tons of promo (Graham Norton show and David Letterman) and two number one hits prior to the release of her second album under capitol records
California girls was voted the song of the summer at the time but it still went and did double plat

      • Proud-Arianator September 3, 2014

but im glad you believe in her 🙂 Xoxo

    • sirkross September 3, 2014

s*** that grape juice should hire you!

  5. SipTheTruth September 3, 2014

Gaga and del rey sold more first week and they were called flops.

    • Mark111 September 3, 2014

Del Ray isn’t a flop, but a slow seller. Gaga is a flop to jer own standard. This was the 3rd album in (4th if you wanna count Fame Monster as an album, her fans goes back n forth on that)aand you’re already flopping? Plus her previous album sold a million (actually sold a million, unlike thay other artist that fans tries to chop up as if she sold a milli in the first week, but only sold 991k on tje 10th day of release) the first week while ArtFlop is still stuck at 700k while her peers (Katy, Miley and Beyoncé) all passed 1 million in sales. Plus the $25 million promo, tour, flashing her ass at the vma. Yea, it’s a flop.

I’ll give you this, Invincible sold 10 million WW and is MJ’S flop album, while Usher praised for pushing 10M in the states. The difference is one’s standard was 30 million while the other was the peak of their career. Grande can do these numbers and it’s fine, but if these were Beyonce numbers, after doing no less than 300k, then it would be a decline to Beys standard.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Gaga also was too polarizing with the album/promo this era. It didn’t help that her competition was a generic appeal to the masses (katy) and a controversial former Disney star (Miley). The campaign was effectively dead in December. Lotus-tease.

      • Mark111 September 3, 2014

Funny cause Gaga was both of those things in her past era. Poor girly man, Katy out pop her with more catchy songs and Miley took all of the shock from Gags. Mind you, Miley non ass got more attention at the vmas while Gaga was running around bear ass in the stands. That what happends when your whole carrer relies on a meat dress.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Hmm I disagree with anyone saying that gaga is over. I don’t think it’s ever over when you can sing and perform like her. I’ll just take this as a 4 or rated r era. The songs weren’t radio friendly at all. And I’m screaming at these katy singles absolutely flopping now.

      • lets be real September 3, 2014

boo don’t forget that btw million a week sale was due to it being sold for 99 cents like a Wendy’s 5 piece nugget, ok?thanks

      • GaGa’s Tampon September 3, 2014

but lets agree that ARTPOP is definitely a trash album no amount of promo can save it now at the end of the day you can be the biggest pop star on the planet but if you release material that people don’t agree with then don’t be surprised if you sell less then expected

    • GaGa’s Tampon September 3, 2014

Hey it’s better than giving away your album for free on google play

  6. SHANIQUA September 3, 2014

FLOP. FLOP.FLOP. Sold less than ARTFLOP in the first week LMAO poor ariah grande.

  7. Eloviano September 3, 2014

3 top hits(2 of which were top 5 singles) Problem peaked at no2, Break Free at no4, and Bang Bang at no 6. Hèll she performed at the VMA’s, multiple TV shows, magazine covers, you name it,she did it. And she can only debut with 168 000, that’s just an increase of 30k from her previous album, which is nothing to brag about. And stop trying to divert attention to Lana Del Rey,because Ariana flopped, you tried it.

    • Eloviano September 3, 2014

      *3 Top ten hits

  8. UGH September 3, 2014

Not necessarily a flop, because the industry is used to pushing 33k-65k on average, debuting top 10 on the Hot 100… this leads LB with a good point… compared to her peers, she did well, however with the budget and prono campaign they used for this era, she underperformed, but didn’t flop… believe it or not, there is a difference.

  9. Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

Gaga is a huge ass flop transgender… How can you be a miley cyrus lessor a 21 year old disney kid?? Flop flop flop mini Mooriah is flopping like crazy

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

The kii is that artpop actually outsold bangerz ww with virtually no hits or promo after November.

      • Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

Kii is that bangerz outsold that fad in the biggest market ever US

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

By 300k? I’m sure gaga made more money overall.

  10. CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

This is only a “flop” because of the amount of promo she got. But people should keep in mind that teenage dream did about 190k first week with two massive number 1 singles preceding it in a much better album selling era. Ariana will be fine if she consistently promotes these singles on the record. She doesn’t need to be a rihanna (rihanna doesn’t either imo).

    • Mark111 September 3, 2014

Rihanna needed to pull a “Rihanna” because unlike her rivals (Beyoncé and Ciara) (mind you, this is 2005) her album didn’t sell nor last long enough to keep her name out there, hell she didn’t even have a name, she was Pon De Replay girl and then 6 months later became the SOS girl. It was a smart move to drop a 2nd album 6 months later because it saved her from being a one hit wonder with a dance hall summer song (there were twins and some other chick in 2003 and 2004 with huge summer songs, but were forgotten by fall, people thought Rihanna was no different). By 2007, people forgot about A Girl Like Me (mind you, all these albums were good) so her most iconic era came next. GGGB and Umbrella made her am international star, the era lasted 2 years (a re release the following year.) After that, her 4th album was supposed to of came out early 2009 called Dark Angel, but the whole Chris Brown thing happend and pushed everything over to the fall. She came out with her best album to date Rated R. Now Rate R didn’t have any dance songs thay people wanted from GGGB, so it was only right to bring Loud (in her words, the perfect marriage) and thay era was huge. I feel that she cut Loud era too short with TTT. TTT should had been a Loud Re release imo. And then she cut TTT era too short with Unapologetic. I think she really wanted to get away from def jam at the end.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

What do you think rih’s numbers will be this era? I feel like she should be doing at least 350+ now.

      • Mark111 September 3, 2014

I’ll say 250 to 300K. The Roaches will laugh, but a year from now, it’ll cross the 5 million mark WW. This next era will be big, because who else is here? Swift will have huge numbers, probably another million the first week. Plus for the first time since 2009, we miss Rihanna. So it’s gonna be big.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Adele. I also feel like Bruno will be coming out soon. But tbh I feel like rihanna has transcended this katy, Miley, Ariana level. I feel like she should be able to do 500+ like gaga, bey, swift, Adele, justin, etc.

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Also, I just caught that Ciara shade. Death!

  11. Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

3 top 10s and so many hits but you’re still selling 100K+ I don’t have the time

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

It’s only her second album tho. She’s only had a year to build on her nickelodeon fan base.

      • Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

        The promo she had tho

      • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Teenage dream had the same promo and debuted w slightly higher numbers. It’s all about the base.

  12. Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

    FLOP

  13. Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

    Mooriah Curse… Lol

  14. black September 3, 2014

    Not surprised… #next

  15. CT September 3, 2014

This wont out sell artpop tbh maybe this will get a gold certification in japan…next year..

  16. #TeamTinashe Stan (PRE-ORDER “Aquarius” Now On iTunes) September 3, 2014

Ihonestly like her but I really think her and her brother has been pumping her up too much right now were she now has built this conceited “Don’t touch me” ways about her lol. In other words she is starting become a Diva/B****. I really want her to win because Im about that 1993 life lol but the Diva attitude needs to go and old Ariana “humbled” one needs to come back!

Just watch her interview on Power 106 andthe Today show were she ignores and pushes a fans hand lol.

    • Stephy. September 3, 2014

Awww.. She’s becoming a mini Diva Mariah too huh?

      • OMG Logic!!! September 3, 2014

Mariah goes out of her way to stop for her fans. Don’t compare her to this little peasant clone.

    • #TeamTinashe Stan (PRE-ORDER “Aquarius” Now On iTunes) September 3, 2014

*her team and her brother 🙂

She’s becoming a little fake here and there 🙁
      http://youtu.be/Wwv3R547Tjw

  17. Stephy. September 3, 2014

The album has become forgettable to me… I’m not even hating on this child neither. Why can’t young stars these days create albums that last longer than 1+ year??? Its like albums these days just come & go… Smh…

ARIANA GRANDE’S NUMBERS ARE DECENT, THO IT WILL STRUGGLE FOR GOLD. CONGRATS TO HER!

    • Mark111 September 3, 2014

Year? Most are forgotten after a week. Who’s playing AKA? New Classic? I would name more, but I really cant recall anyone else releases. It’s a singles age now and that’s not a bad thing because that’s tje only format that is selling. Sad but true. Look at the top 40… how many of those artist sold a million albums with the record thay charted? I’ll wait….. very few.

      • moe September 3, 2014

i still listen to AKA honestly this album is her best . too bad didnt manage to have a hit else it would have sold moreee. next is BOoty with iggy . let s see i have hope in this single . JLo still got it

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

But these days I think it takes multiple eras to get to that point. I think iggy can get to the point where she’s going platinum. Lorde and Macklemore are the only new pop-type acts that I can think of that did otherwise.

  18. Proud-Arianator September 3, 2014

    FLOP!

  19. CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Also, Lana didn’t flop. UV is going to do a million ww very soon. Lana will probly be doing 10k a week for the next two years. That’s just how she sells. I also can’t believe that over 60% of her sales are international.

    • GaGa’s Tampon September 3, 2014

apparently it has reached the million mark according to some article I read a while back by the way was listening to 3 Words earlier on I cant get enough “Heaven” and “Make Me Cry”

    • Me September 3, 2014

UV has reached 1 million already.

It is still the highest selling female album of the year.

NO ONE has beat lana yet.

  20. Proud-Arianator September 3, 2014

    It’s her sophomore album
Still tryna find her signature sound and identity
And she’s slowly being discovered by many fans all over the world
She’ll be fine if she constantly promotes this album
It’s better to start slowly and work your way up to the top as opposed to starting on the top and come crashing down 5 years into your career

    • OMG Logic!!! September 3, 2014

A product like her doesn’t have a “signature sound and identity” lmao the reach.

  21. Musika September 3, 2014

Give her a break. She’s still pretty new to the music scene. Only managed to release a debut album last year with 1 Top 10 single. She’s no Gaga, so don’t compare her like that and assume she’s a flop.

  22. #Dismissed September 3, 2014

I expected this album to do big numbers tbh. Problem was a huge single, bang bang and break free are both at the top 10. But we’ll see how it’ll turn out to be. Good luck Ari.

  23. CzarM September 3, 2014

These numbers are mediocre — especially considering she had three songs in the top 10 at once. All her camp knows how to do is lure people to the songs themselves, but struggle are compelling an audience to her. Another ‘singles artist’ who the public doesn’t trust to be worth their whole $10. And that’s the bottom line: who really wants to buy an Ariana Grande album? A single, sure whatever…but a whole album by her, no thank you.

  24. Dem Lessors September 3, 2014

Okay, here’s what went wrong. S*** second single, them really bad performances, that story about the meet and greet. Next album they need to give her consistent material, usually when a new artist breaks out their second single succeds the first on Billboard. She needs to spend a year polishing them live vocals or at least use some more backtrack and just sing on the verses. All these random press stories made her sound desperate too, that lie about her ex being gay, her mum thinking she was going to be a murder…like wtf, all her PR was stilted or negative, Fire the publicist! I think she can still do better next time round, she should release again next year do a Rihanna.

    • Katy Cat September 3, 2014

What went wrong with britney jean?

      • Dem Lessors September 3, 2014

Don’t worry Hun, it helped promote her Vegas residency where she got 27 million for doing around 5 shows a month. That’s why her net worth is $220,000,000 and Katy’s is half that. Hustle game on point!

  25. Belladonna1363 September 3, 2014

Why do people think that just because you have a hit song your album is just going to sell? If an album is going to sell in today world its going to need…..dare I say it………..BornThisWayPromo. Lol ( Gaga did do some things right back in her day) The first 3days of your album being out is the most important. She should have had her album commercial play during the VMAS & then on Monday she should have went on Good Morning America & then had a MTV speacl about the making of the album come on that night & should have had commercial for the special shown the week be4 the VMA’S. and then on Tuesday Do A big show like Dancing With The Stars & then Late night With Jimmy Fallon. And the next day Ellen & the next day some other show. And this is why you she come out in the Fall so you can go on SNL be4 your album week is up. She did everything to late, Having a number1 Song will do nothing for your albums first week sales Look at Rihhanna,Katy & Nicki yet Taylor Swift had big first week numbers with out a number1 song, So did One Dierction & So did Beyonce & Kanye West.

  26. moe September 3, 2014

aha so JLO and f****** both didnt sell good because of a top ten hit . that makes sense . i mean if jlo managed to have this amount of hits she necessarily managed to sell more than ariana . honestly i cant hear ariana s voice .

  27. Rihboy September 3, 2014

Sad to say bey has changed the rules of the game. Although i feel like ciaras team had the idea first with releasing snippets for each video. I think bey was inspired by that move and took it to another level. Hence the surprise release. So at this point people are looking for something along the lines of a surprise now. Which is why i believe rih removed herself from instagram. I believe its all apart of something to do with r8 release. She hasnt promoted it at all. Its nearing her usual release time and not a peep. I smell a surprise release without videos.

    • Absolved September 3, 2014

Rihanna hasn’t promoted at all because other, bigger selling artists are taking her week from her. Both Adele and Eminem have albums coming out the week of Black Friday, which is when she usually releases. But there’s no way she’ll dare compete against them. The silence is them scrambling to try and come up with an alternate plan for a “singer” who NEEDS that big shopping week but this time can’t use it because if she did she’d look like a failure as she’d be guaranteed to NOT outsell Hurricane Adele and Hurricane Eminem, which would set a negative tone for the entire promotion cycle of that album.

And a “surprise” release would be a PR nightmare because A) It would be her copying Beyonce, and everybody would say so…and B) Rihanna has always been a poor first week seller, so a surprise release from her would be disaster! There’s no way she’d pull that off as well as Beyonce did.

      Hmmm. Dilemma, dilemma.

    • MsLadySoul September 3, 2014

Basically. If not for Adele and Eminem’s recent release date announcements, Rihanna would probably already have a single out now. She’s has never been this quiet. It’s obvious that they’ve got her rerouting everything to avoid colliding with them. Taylor, Eminem and Adele have basically squeezed Rihanna out of this whole holiday season.

      • Rihboy September 3, 2014

Highly doubt she is hiding from anyone above. If rih were to release by surprise, it would get negative flack, however we know in her.case; positive or negative she still outshines. I believe if she were to release as bey did, she would probably duplicate or do better than bey. Just my opinion. Then while you issue out singles via the gp, issue the video instead of giving it to them all at once.

  28. Lady Flopga September 3, 2014

Beyoncé indeed changed the game.. I also feel like the GP wants that shock factor from now on

  29. justme September 3, 2014

No one wants to admit it Beyonce has changed the game. She said it in her documentary quick singles no one releases album any more giving you a body of work. Also I don’t look for a singles artist to do big album sales. Only big fan bases can do that. Of course from me knowing there are only two. Taylor Swift fans and of course the beyhive. They are the ones that buy albums sorry Navy you talk that talk u but you don’t buy albums. People say adele but that was one album which people keep talking about it. Usher had the same album sell like that and where is his numbers now. Those two artist are the only artist that are consistent with bringing over 300,000 the first week.

  30. Xena September 3, 2014

I can’t at people trying to pretend that these numbers are cute or passable. As oversaturated as Ariana and her pal Iggy have been over the past few months, their albums should have opened with 250-300k minimum. Low first week sales of an album with huge pop hits just goes to show that the GP is only checking for the song and couldn’t cares less about the name behind them. In other words, she’s not special. ANYBODY could have recorded “Problem” and gotten those same results. She’s not special. All this proves is that she doesn’t have a strong audience and is most likely a fad. If she attempted to headline a decent sized tour, it would be a disaster for her.

    • CherylSoldier September 3, 2014

Did you not read above where we said that she’s basically had a year to pull these numbers? A year ago she was an unknown nickelodeon star. What do you expect? Again, teenage dream did 190k w 2 massive number ones. Rihanna did 200k w loud, also w 2 massive number 1s

  31. FutureCIARA September 3, 2014

I haven’t heard the album, and honestly don’t care to!

I’ll hear it when I hear it chile…

Not a flop. Ariana Grande has an exclusively young fan base, like 20-25 at the oldest, and probably hardly any fans over 30. Young people do not buy albums. Her singles are selling huge, and that’s where her biggest successes will always be.

To put this into perspective, Weird Al entered the Billboard 200 at #1 last month with sales of 105k based on his online campaign, but he has fans dating back to his parody hits in the 80s. He has an older fan base who still buy CDs.

That logic doesn’t make sense. One direction, Miley, 5 secs of summer were some of the best selling releases

Why would anyone want to buy an album full of jibberish. The girl can’t even speak properly. Besides she’ll just release another album next year with a “new sound.” She’s a bland product and she will sell like one.
