Watch: Tinashe Rocks ‘106 & Park’ With ‘Pretend / 2 On’ Medley

R&B newcomer Tinashe stopped by BET’s 106 & Park yesterday and seemed keen to prove why she’s here to stay.

The singer, whose debut album ‘Aquarius’ arrived in stores this week, took to the stage to perform the set’s two preceding singles ‘Pretend’ and Summer smash ‘2 On’.

Peep the 21-year-old dance up a storm after the jump…

It’s understandable why she performed ‘Pretend’ as it’s the current single, however that performance was – quite literally – all about ‘2 On’.

The choreography and the conviction she expressed while delivering it earn tens across the board. More than anything, it re-affirmed why the Californian native (whose name means “God Is With Us” in Zimbabwean) is on-course to become one of the year’s most notable break-out stars. Werk!

  10. #TeamTinashe Stan “Aquarius” NOW In Stores October 7, 2014

YESSSSS!!! That’s how you SLAY EM!!
    QueenTee is incredbilw like wow!

    • BeyRihLiyah October 7, 2014

great album ive been reading the wonderful reviews they been comparing her to janet , Aaliyah(even though I don’t see it), jhene aiko and the weeknd

      • Mark111 October 7, 2014

I see Janet (sound and theme wise) and Jhene, but not Aaliyah. I hear Mya more than anything. Maybe they mean Aaliyah’s risk factor, or being able to sing “loud”, but choose the laid back rout.

      • #TeamTinashe Stan “Aquarius” NOW In Stores October 7, 2014

        Yay! Thanks!
You know I’ve always compared Tinashe to Aaliyah’s last edgy album and Myà although everybody forgot about her and I don’t get Aaliyah at all with this album too. But “Bet” is definitely Tinashe’s Janet Jackson “If” moment for now.

    • Molly October 7, 2014

I also seen where they compared this knock off ho to Queen CiCi

  11. NOLIES October 7, 2014

Her album is very good and she’s (probably – off the top of my head) the best R&B female dancer to debut in the last 5 years, but I don’t care for her live voice.

    • Mark111 October 7, 2014

Streeter and Mila J can dance as well. I’m glad R&B has new and fresh meat, I’m tired of the old flops that you wish and want them to bring it, but fail every time (Ciara, Brandy, Kelly and so many more). Out with the old, in with the new.

      • NOLIES October 7, 2014

Who wants to keep the old? Aren’t you the one always complaining about Aaliyah and her deserved credit? Mila and Sevyn are cute.

      • Mark111 October 7, 2014

Again, you’re confusing old and classic. Aaliyah gets her credit, that’s why the Pest floods her post and videos with hate.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

Aaliyah Stan’s are generally the ones who hate on Beyonce. They can’t stand to see her shine because they ‘think’ Aaliyah would have been ‘potentially’ better had she not died. That’s the truth. And people like you, who throw shade at Beyonce all the time don’t help.

      • Brian310 October 8, 2014

Most Aaliyah fans I know like Beyoncé so idk where you got your facts from but they are wrong if anything mist people say Aaliyah woukd have been to Bey what Prince was to MJ.

    • Skyfall October 7, 2014

      True

    • Mark111 October 7, 2014

I know! She’s everything Beyonce lies about, a writer, producer and an artist.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

You need to stop trying to shade everyone unnecessarily. You stan for Aaliyah and Rihanna two of the most basic ‘style over substance’ artists to ever grace the industry.

      • Skyfall October 7, 2014

        Death!!!

      • Beysus October 7, 2014

        SHUT IT HO!!!

      • Mark111 October 7, 2014

Aaliyah and Rihanna take risk and are/were always on some next level ish. You’re mad cause Beyonce time and time again is exposed on talking, I mean being inspired from some other artist. You don’t have a dog in this race hooker.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

@Mark111 Next level of what? Like I said, style over substance. Not impressed. There’s nothing risky about Rihanna and her pop music either. Beyonces surprise album was more risky than anything Rihanna has ever done in her entire career besides shaving off the side of her head. When even that’s been done before,

      • Mark111 October 7, 2014

Beyonce sound wise has brought NOTHING new to this genre. Her style (or lack of) is nothing new. Nothing on her self title took risk. Everyone she worked with worked with Rihanna way before. (Drake, Sia, JT, Timberland (I wonder who brought him on to the scene?), Dream and working with her pet camel has been played out since 03. Plus you’re mixing risk with hype. What risk? Another album with two first singles (a pop and an urban single) with a video for every song. Did I just name I Am and Be-Day/4? Run while you can, cause I’m not the one today PEST.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

@Mark111 What genre are you speaking of? Because in the 2000s there was no other female who bought R&B infused pop music to such a mainstream scale besides Beyonce. You either had R&B songs or pop songs. What has Rihanna bought that’s so ‘new’ to the genre that has not been done before? Let’s see this|
        X does Pop, R&B &Caribbean music (2003 – 06), Y does Pop, R&B &Caribbean music (2005 -07)
        X goes from Urban/Pop to Pop(2008), Y goes from Urban/Pop to Pop (2010)
        X goes back to R&B roots(2011), Y goes back to R&B root (2012)
X does an animated film (2013), Y does an animated film (2014)
        X drops a special album with 17 special bonus features (2013), B does a concept album (2014)

So what’s so original about Rihanna in her music that hast been done before? She does nothing but ride the waves of underground up and coming trends in music, or trends that are already there. Aaliyah bought nothing that Janet didn’t already bring to music either besides tomboy STYLE (once again).

And yes the album was a risk are you SERIOUS. It paid off. That could have gone majorly wrong, there was no lead single, no airplay or anything. It was just dropped out of no where. No one could have predicted that many people would invest in her album. No one. According to the fangs in 2011 she washed up, dated and no one cared anymore.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

What ‘sound’ is Rihanna associated with that SHE bought to the table? What? because all I get is an artists jumping back and forth from genre to genre when it’s continent. Beyonce, always tends to have R&B undertones in all her albums. Even her most pop, IASF. Her upbeat are generally associated with brass instrumentals and drum sounds. (Crazy In Love, De Ja Vu, End Of Time etc) That is a typical ‘Beyonce’ sound.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

        convenient***

      • LB October 7, 2014

Why is Naomi pretending like Beyonce doesn’t wait to see who Rihanna works with first before she adds them on her basic music?

Have a stadium of seats, better yet, go perch on that couch and watch Beyonce’s concert nobody cared about on HBO.

      • Naomi October 7, 2014

And why is LB pretending like he was not one of the first with his mouse at the ready to click purchase on ITunes on December 13th 2013 of that ‘basic’ music. Wrong or nah? And how about you perch in that pigeons nest and wait for that basic album to drop, where is it? I thought she’s been working on it since before Diamonds Tour? I’m getting de Ja Vu here, except the sides have switched.

      • Brian310 October 8, 2014

Aaliyah in her 7 years was more innovative and original than Bey in her 17 years so let’s not start a fight you would lose again and again and her music far exceeds Bey’s, she didn’t change the music scene like Aaliyah did in the late 90s. Aaliyah was inspired by Janet but unlike Bey she was able to still be herself and be inspired without copying the artists she looked up to.

      • Naomi October 8, 2014

@Brian. I dont see this major impact or change from Aaliyah you speak of. Beyonce has had far more impact on pop culture and those are just facts.

  12. Skyfall October 7, 2014

When did Ciara sell 30 million records ?

    • Mark111 October 7, 2014

I just spit out my drink!

      • Skyfall October 7, 2014

Death! When I say that I had to stop, scroll up then scroll back down. I thought my eyes was playing tricks on me.

    • NOLIES October 7, 2014

She probably made a mistake and meant that Baby Future has 30 step brothers and sisters and that Ciara’s last 4 combined almost reach a million

    • LB October 7, 2014

I think he meant 30,000 records, aren’t those Basic instinct (the self shade) numbers?

    • cocobutta October 8, 2014

I’m on my no.37 London bus in stitches. Lmao at these comments.

  13. BeyRihLiyah October 7, 2014

#DEATh Tinashe has this Ciara fan seething did this delusininal hoeeee really say Ciara has sold 30 million records WORLDWIDE!!!!!!!!! LMFAO

  14. Naomi October 7, 2014

Not a fan of her vocals but she has great charisma on stage and her album is really good so i wish her nothing but the best!

  15. #TeamTinashe Stan “Aquarius” NOW In Stores October 7, 2014

Hol’ on. Wasn’t @Molly from “The Big Comfy Couch” a fan of Tinashe before? Why the flip fllopping act now?

    • BeyRihLiyah October 7, 2014

because tinashe is about to outsell both of its t***** favs

  17. Revolution October 7, 2014

Cute but something about her is corny.

  18. LB October 7, 2014

First of all, I fuqing hate her one stan on here, annoying as hell. Plus her shade level is about as solid as FutureCiara’s d*** when smashing a girl.

Moving on, I love love love this album, WILDFIRE and FAR SIDE OF THE MOON are my jams.

Slay a bit Tinashe. Not Tinashe doing better worldwide than Ciara though. Ciara did have some cute songs in her 4 year career, not gonna lie.

  19. LB October 7, 2014

Tinashe gurl though, that pic is very Rihanna

    • Naomi October 7, 2014

      The reach.

  20. RICHIE_RICH October 7, 2014

She has that it factor!!!!!!! Her CD is real cute too, work bish!!!!!!!

  21. CherylSoldier October 7, 2014

Yeasss, her album is fire too!

  22. Ozzy October 7, 2014

Im on board!!!!! This girl put out an amazing album and I was one of the doubters who was surprised by how good it is! I wish her the best and there are a couple of promising options as singles. The girl can really sing beyond what you hear on 2 On and the production is solid as well.

  23. LB October 7, 2014

LMAO….Must be my time of the month or something…I am listening to Beyonce’s horrible music and I’m kind of getting my life…Pink is the flavor solve the riddle….

    • Special Delivery October 8, 2014

Because that album is better than anything basicanna put out

  24. D October 8, 2014

Idk what yall don’t understand.Whether it be Ciara or Kelly or Brandy or Mila J or Jhene Aiko, female R&B is NOT SELLING LIKE IT USED TO.Yall keep calling these women flops but none of them are pushing 150k and up first week.None at all.Old, new or indifferent.Mariah didn’t and she’s a damn legend.Calling everyone a flop is getting old.And it doesn’t help any of yalls credibility as far as forming a valued opinion on music.

  25. LiveLoveLaugh October 8, 2014

Ciara is multi-platinum selling, grammy award winning artist, songwriter, performer, entertainer. A very talented chick and trendsetter making millions. You pathetic haters comparing tinahe to Ci, and she hasn’t even accomplish half of what Ci has. At least Ciara has accomplishments, and success unlike you bums who sit on their butts all day hating and leaving your negative pathetic comments on blog sites.

Comparing sales, states, but you bums have no accomplishments of your own to brag about. poor you. smh!

    • LiveLoveLaugh October 8, 2014

  26. MisdamenorFan October 8, 2014

    No.

  27. ann October 8, 2014

There is nothing original about Tinashe, or Jasmine V the next Ariana Grande, they are just a part of that “new”crop of RnB. Those in their 30s by industry standards are getting old. So here we go with the younger Rnb female artists who are pretty much recycled with the same producers as everyone else! The producers, rappers, who feat on those songs are all good therefor there are no bad RnB/pop RnB albums people, not just white people, need to support the artist! Im rooting for Tiara Thomas btw!

  28. FutureCIARA October 8, 2014

IM SORRY! She cute or whatever, but I have to READ!

Not yall giving it up for those basement House Party dance moves that Ciara was doing during the Goodies era, and making it seem as if she was “Slaying” choreography!
The dance moves were basic as fukk and can be executed by the thottiest thots that comment on this blog.
Aside from that those pre-recorded vocals were on point, as well as her live voice.

On another side note, The host was probably seething as she had to introduce Tinashe, because her music career hasnt done anything as of yet.

  29. LIL’ KIM IS THE G.O.A.T. October 8, 2014

    SLAAAAAAAAAAAAY B****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Rihboy October 8, 2014

Vocally underwhelming, but she definitely has some moves. I felt like she could have really sang sang pretend! Guess she is saving the vocals for the right performance. How mariah doing tho?

I wasn’t jumping on board at 1st but after hearing the album stream she convinced me.
She has more to her sound than I originally thought.
Her TGJ made me like her and this performance is WAY better than the one she did on Wendell Williams.

The other influences she has in music showed up on Aquarius.
Well done on getting my coins
