Report: Ariana Grande & Jessie J To Remake ‘The Boy Is Mine’

With ‘Bang Bang’ still blazing the charts, it’s proven that Ariana Grande and Jessie J make for a winning team.

As such, it’s little surprise that the powerhouses look set to reunite next year. However, it’s the track they’re alleged to be teaming up for that has many jaws on the floor.

Full story below…

In a new interview with Hits Daily Double, hitmaker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins revealed that he’s currently piecing together a greatest hits project that will compile new versions (as well as some originals) of the many smashes he’s produced.

Confirming the involvement of Grande and J, Jerkins seems to announce that the duo will duet on a remake of Brandy and Monica‘s 1998 smash ‘The Boy Is Mine’:

What else is coming up for you in 2015?
Next year is my 20-year anniversary and I’m doing a very special project. Some originals as well as reimagined hits. So for example, I’ll do the “The Boy Is Mine” with Ariana and Jesse J. Sam is doing “It’s Not Right It’s Okay” by Whitney Houston, which Sam told me was the song that made him want to sing. When I asked him if he’d be a part of this project he was like, “No one else can do that song but me!” Sam’s the truth. He has a great heart and he’s genuine. His music speaks for who he is. This is a project I’m really looking forward to.

Since its release, ‘Boy’ became a global smash, selling 3 million copies in the US alone, and earned the ladies a Grammy Award.

Needless to say, its re-recording – even if for a compilation – will certainly attract the attention of many and more over, create high expectation.

And while we’re sure some sects are ready to rip the remake shreds based on the idea alone, we’re actually keen to hear it. For, both Jessie and Ariana are two of this generation’s most promising voices and both (especially Jessie) have showered praise on Brandy and Monica before. As such, we’d see it as more of a tribute than a disservice.

    Love the original better…

    • Sarah November 11, 2014

But You haven’t heard the remix yet?

      • Kayla November 11, 2014

Right, like why is this new generation so stupid snd negative. Artists always remake classics. Whitney, Mary and Mariah did covers of classics. Beyoncé covered classics. R Kelly, Aaliyah, etc… And sometimes the remakes are just as successful. It breaths new life into the song

    • Mark111 November 11, 2014

Doesn’t matter, that song was HUGE and even Bran and Mo couldn’t do it again.

    • Lisa November 11, 2014

So not impressed with ARIANNA’s nasal vocals; she seems like a fake MARIAH CAREY without the iconic hit songs, with out that heartbreaking lower register, without the song writing abilities. We still have MARIAH why not show her love. Whitney is gone. MARIAH and CELINE are the best singers in the business now

      • JOHNVIDAL November 11, 2014

        @lisa
        I agree.

  2. Mimi Carey November 11, 2014

No, just no. A screamer and a whiner. Why can’t people just leave the classics alone?

    • justme November 11, 2014

I’m with you jessie j maybe ariana no her voice I guess will be Brandy but no like don’t ruin a classic. That’s just how music lovers feel. We will always remember the original. No matter who sings it.

  3. Kitty Puurrzz November 11, 2014

Monica & Brandy are R&B legends of their own right… I can’t wait for Mo’s album. She’s been working and experimenting with this new sound.

    • Sherry November 11, 2014

I love them both. They are jewels.

  4. KingCalio November 11, 2014

    Lies…..Leave it alone…

  5. Diamond Princess November 11, 2014

Ummm… Why folks always gotta mess SH!T UP?!!! No disrespect to these talented ladies but HELL NO!!! Classics need to be left alone. This reminds me of when they remade ‘We Are The World’ B*******!! Even Bey & Jay didn’t wanna be a part of that crap. Why producers always wanna recreate their global hits? Are they not talented enough to create new ones(Quincy Jones..Rodney Jerkins)? Ya’ll look desperate as f$@!

  6. Alex November 11, 2014

They are good singers but they shouldn’t touch that song.

  7. SMH November 11, 2014

Sam Smith covering Whitney sounds kinda interesting…

    • Everyone’s A Critic November 11, 2014

Damn straight! Sam is King of vocals

  8. Mark111 November 11, 2014

Jesses is a great singer tho, she sat on a chair with a broken foot at the VMAs in 2011 and did covers in between commercial breaks and killed them MINUS Scurbs, she did a bad job on that one. I get that classic gets covers, but this will not work.

  9. Beysus November 11, 2014

I’ve not even heard the original…

    • Mimi Carey November 11, 2014

      Shut up f***** troll

      • Beysus November 11, 2014

        Hmmm no…

  10. Mimi Carey November 11, 2014

    -listening to never say never-
    Classic Album!!!

    • Sherry November 11, 2014

Angel In Disguise is my favorite Brandy song ever!!!!

      • wheresmyjizzle November 11, 2014

        I second that

      • Credits November 11, 2014

Iiiiiiiiiii love you!!!!! I would never do the things she did! Take your heart and run away with iiiiiii–iiitttt!

  11. DanYiel Teflon November 11, 2014

Ill pass on any Remakes although I’ve heard Sam do “Whitney Houston” songs in his key & their nice!!

  12. Ricky November 11, 2014

    what in the actual hell?

    You gotta be kidding me?

  13. Call me what you want November 11, 2014

Ariana will be Brandy and Jessie will be Monica

  14. ChrisFierce November 11, 2014

Rodney Jerkins better sit his hungry ass down somewhere! Let The Boy Is Mine stay a CLASSIC and recorded by ONLY Monica & brandy!

  15. Cupid November 11, 2014

This will be interesting to hear. I love Ariana’s voice when she takes time to prenounciate her words. I think this will sound pretty good.

  16. #TeamTinashe Stan “Aquarius” Now In Stores November 11, 2014

See…… this type of sh!t now. SMH!
I told y’all these labels have already LEARNED the black musical formats and now there ready to use their white artists and have them take over HipHop/R&B.
Now I don’t have a problem with white artists I enjoy every music out there but I just know these record labels have AGENDA’S that they’ve been ready to fulfill.

    • #TeamTinashe Stan “Aquarius” Now In Stores November 11, 2014

Although the idea of Ariana doing Brandy’s part is quite interesting and I think might work but I don’t know about Jessie J…

    • BeyRihLiyah November 11, 2014

but Ariana and Jessie both mix r&b ,pop and hip hop into their music and you say the labels are trying to put white artidt in r&b and hiphop well somebody has to do them general because TUNAFISH FLOPQUARIUS isn’t doing any moves/justice in r&b

    • Selenator November 11, 2014

      Ariana Grande isn’t white though.

  17. Sherry November 11, 2014

Interesting because both of them stan for Brandy. Ariana will probably end up singing her parts. I agree w/ the consensus that the song should be left alone, but hey…

  18. christinastherealtalent November 11, 2014

Oh hell no! I love Jessie and Ariana but no! You saw what happened when Brandy and Monica tried to do that sequel.

    • @PrettigurlrockD November 11, 2014

That was a different song and they were both past their prime so that’s why it didn’t pop off. So I hardly call it a sequel.

  19. Bey Advocate November 11, 2014

Now Bey and Rih would be good…put aside your hate for the both of them and think about it….Bey might have to dumb down her vocals but it would definitely be entertaining.

  20. skyfall November 11, 2014

    not here for it.

  21. Lmfao_Hoe November 11, 2014

Ladies I love you both. But hell no !! Leave this classic alone. Like damn this is why everyone is saying theses artists of today aren’t original. Make yah own original s***. This also proves the 80s,90s, and early 00s were the last golden eras of music.

  22. Dante November 11, 2014

People forget that Whitney Houston covered a classic “I will always love you” by Dolly Parton. People had no problem with that!

    • Danny b November 11, 2014

Bc her version was better and she made the iconic

  23. @PrettigurlrockD November 11, 2014

Mimi Carey said the truth. They both can sing but I don’t know how well they will pull this off but we shall see.

  24. Rosie November 11, 2014

Ariana’s 12 year old stans have no idea what this song is.

Let’s talk about how Marina is kinda slaying out of nowhere. Now completely free from that trash label 679, FROOT (album) is #7 on preorders alone in the US, and the song is #34.

    • Dem Lessors November 11, 2014

What, you like Marina! She bankrupt 679 so the label ain’t that trash, they put all their finances into her. Anyways stan for a b**** she’s still with Atlantic/Neon Gold.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZzcY7ASQno

    • Rosie November 11, 2014

Yeah but they were terrible with promo and handling the era even before they were bankrupted. Not to mention they didn’t give Marina complete creative control. Now she has both a budget and a label who actually cares for her.
Neon Gold>>> I wish they did a deal with Columbia instead since most of their artists seem to go there after their “indie” phase. Atlantic is probs the worst major label after Epic.

  25. MJ November 11, 2014

I like Jessie J a lot. Ariana is a good singer also. But a remake of The Boy is Mine? No ma’am. Classics can be remade. And sometimes the remakes are better. I don’t have a problem with people trying. But I don’t think their voices are suited to the song. And Ariana came out covering Mariah’s music. No shade, but she needs to find a sound of her own and really find her own lane before she worries about covering other people’s music.

  26. Dossome November 11, 2014

I’m used to Whitney,Mariah and Celine taking on covers and at many instances doing better job than the original so obviously I expect to be underwhelmed by these two,not here for it..sorry not sorry

    • JOHNVIDAL November 11, 2014

I agree. Some people are so damn good and special that they can outdo songs that were already classics (meaning it´s sooo difficult to make the public accept the new version). But Mariah (Without You, Endless Love and more), Whitney (IWALY, Greatest Love of all) and Celine (All by my Self and more) are those kind of b******. They are impacting. So they could do it. These girls are not on that level.

      • Dossome November 11, 2014

And who can forget Saving All My Love,It’s All Coming Back To Me Now and I Still Believe? These women took on classics and made them even bigger classics

  27. izzym November 11, 2014

This seems like a good idea for them to collab on a remix of the song. It will gain them more buzz and people will discover there new albums if it’s successful. It makes sense that these two would do another collab especially since they’re on the same label. Jessie’s new album shouldn’t be flopping and I heard masterpiece will be the next US single. It’s confusing though because I thought Burnin’ Up was the current single?! As for Ariana, her team should find more ways for her to promote My Everything, before The Honeymoon tour begins. We’ve had so many performances of Problem & Break free, she should perform Love Me Harder & Break Your Heart Right Back if she gains more promo slots on TV! Looking forward to see her Jingle Ball performances & the new Christmas album she’ll have coming out. If only her & Mariah could collab but the shade clearly won’t allow it.

    • wheresmyjizzle November 11, 2014

what you say makes sense. however I have mixed feelings. guess we’ll see how it goes.

  28. Dem Lessors November 11, 2014

Ok. Maybe a live performance of the song but not then selling a studio version. They can’t.

  29. missdiva November 11, 2014

Nope..not here for it The Boy Is Mine is a classic..Monica and Brandy are legends and should remake it themselves and perform it live too! ONLY WAY TO GO…

  30. BeyRihLiyah November 11, 2014

hmmm this is interesting i’ll preserve judgment until I hear it … and besides this is right up Jessie and Ariana’s alley because they mix r&b,pop, and hip hop into their music which is urban pop

  31. VH1access Blog November 11, 2014

WTf? no.. I’m not here for it. That’s like Miley Cyrus re-making an Aaliyah song.

  32. ASIPOFBRANDY November 11, 2014

NO! JUST NO! Rodney why not record the song again with originals? If this is going to happen as it looks like it is Jesse J should do Brandy’s part and Ariana should Monica’s part.

  33. Brandy And Monica Must Stop This! November 11, 2014

    Must they ruin everything….

  34. xedos November 11, 2014

Let sleeping dog lie . Certain songs need to leave alone.

  35. Indie November 11, 2014

Lets be real, If Rodney Jerkins gets 2 white girls to re-do Brandy and Monica he will lose his black card for good, and thats the bottom line, I can guarantee you that since this has now become news, there is no way this duet will happen between them 2 Mark my words

    • Selenator November 11, 2014

      Ariana Grande isn’t white.

  36. Suxmycockiness =0 November 11, 2014

This will be a screaming mess =/r

  37. garden ridge November 11, 2014

It’s not my first time to pay a visit this website, i
am visiting this site dailly and obtain pleasant facts from
    here all the time.

  38. Stephy Tha Lambily November 11, 2014

Can’t find any classic hits of their own… So, they gotta cover REAL classics. Pathetic.

  39. TheElusiveLamb November 11, 2014

This just shows the sinister industry is on a MISSION to replace these artists. They need to leave s*** alone and flop with their own music.

    • Serena B November 11, 2014

Goodness I know right! What’s next a remake of Lady Marmalade?!?!?

  40. Selenator November 11, 2014

I can’t with you bitter old school fans b!tching before the song has even been recorded! No one is trying to replace anyone, have a seat. Current artists have been covering classics for decades, that’s what adds to its legacy. Look at the song Hallelujah. Its been covered so many times no one even knows the original singer lol. That song is more of a classic then The Boy Is Mine. I love how the same old school fans who complain that this generation has no vocalist are the first to tear down the artist who try to fulfill the role. Get over it.

  41. Donnell November 11, 2014

Amber Riley and Naya Rivera covered it on glee and actually did it some justice. We have to take it for what it is. At the end of the day classics will still be classics. A cover won’t hurt.

  42. Gogo November 11, 2014

If they remake this song especially while Ariana and Jessie is hot. I have a strong feeling this song gon top the charts again.

  43. Credits November 11, 2014

Nope. Bran and Mo’s names are the only names that need to be attached to this song. Darkchild should enlist bran and mo for a part two if anything. Given the current climate for black artists in r&b/soul formats, this will kind of come off as if Ariana and Jessie are taking what is there’s, the biggest song of their career. It’s just too early. Bran and mo are still recording and are still amongst the top vocalists today. They still perform it when they are together and This new edition could take away from that.

    • Danny b November 11, 2014

      THIS.

  44. Why?? November 11, 2014

It’s way too early in their careers to be remaking such an iconic song.

  45. Danny b November 11, 2014

I think classics should only be remade if there’s the slightest possibility that they could be better than the original. I.e. Whitney’s I Will Always Love You, Mariah’s I Still Believe, Christina’s I Turn To You, etc. otherwise, if a song is already iconic bc of the song and the artist that originally sings it, there’s no reason to remake it. Yall remember what happened to that horid Waterfalls cover? Nuff said.

  46. Serena B November 11, 2014

WHAT?!?!?! WHY?!?!? What’s next a re-remake of LADY MARMALADE?!?!?!? #ICANT

  47. NOLIES November 12, 2014

HELL NO! Please no. I don’t think anyone is here for hearing these two b******. One is Whalehanteuse clone who sounds like Big Sean or one of her other 6 exes d*** is caught in her throat and the other is a XXLTina clone who over sings everything. The two untalented c**** who sung it at first irritated the f*** out of me. The song is terrible and old. Get over it. Find something generic and new to ‘sing.’
