Mariah Carey may not want a lot for Christmas, but we’re hoping Santa re-gifts her voice back.
The diva’s vocals (or lack-there of) have been at the centre of ample debate since she set sail on her new tour ‘The Elusive Chanteuse Show’ in October. And though her overall vocal climate improved as the trek treaded on, a new performance tonight has re-affirmed that her road to recovery is by no means a linear.
Mimi was tapped to serve as the “major” attraction at this evening’s Christmas In Rockefeller Center event. However, her performance of her self-penned holiday classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ was attention-grabbing for all the wrong reasons.

It’s sad because on a “good” day, Ms. Carey can still sing many a young’un under the table. However, what the Ariana’s of the world seem to have over her these days is a key quality called consistency. Modern Day Mariah has made it routine to “slay” when visibility is minimal and yet bomb like this when the masses are watching.
She now sings with such trepidation, which is wholly unfortunate for someone whose voice and catalogue of classics continue to inspire generations.

I was there live. It was extremely cold outside..shivering cold. The audience absolutely loved Mariah she got the most cheers. She actually sounded pretty good aside from a few pitch issues.
On the other hand the audience was completely dead during Lady Gagas performance.

And Sam’s quest to HATE on Mariah continues smh. I thought the performance was solid. Her mid range was on-point, but she struggled with her upper register. It’s silly to compare her consistency with Arianna. Mariah has been using her voice non-stop for over 25 years.
I feel for Mariah. but this is no surprise, her doctors warned her about this during the ‘Butterfly/Rainbow’ era. Basically what makes Mariah Carey’s voice so special is the same thing that is going to destroy her; which is the nodules on her vocal cords. Singing through the nodules is what allows Mariah Carey to hit those high notes, but oversinging and not resting her voice enough over the past decade has really affected her voice – it’s a bit like when Adele damaged her vocal chords and had to have surgery for them. Surgery was always an option for mariah, but of course its dangerous and theres no guarantee she would be able to sing the same way.
She can afford to retire for sure, but I know Mariah loves what she does + she really clinging onto her career to distract her separation from Nick. I hope she rests her voice enough to pull off one more album, but she must definitely stop by 50.
