With the help of a ‘Clueless‘-inspired music video and performances delivered to a number of major television platforms, ‘Fancy’ crossed the 4 million units mark in the US this week, standing tall as one of 2014’s highest selling singles as it show no signs of slowing down in 2015.
Pulled from her debut album ‘The New Classic‘, ‘Fancy’s success marked the start of a promising career for the rapper in the US, following a string of jams that failed to impact the charts and leading the way for numerous hit singles released by the star last year.
Indeed, 2014 also saw Azalea rock the charts with the Ariana Grande-led ‘Problem’ and the smash hit singles ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Beg For It‘, the latter pulled from her latest body of work ‘Reclassified‘, which opened with less than 13,000 units sold when it was released last November.
In other chart news, August Alsina‘s ‘Testimony‘ creeps towards sales of 250,000 units after reaching the 205,000 unit mark back in September, while Cheryl Cole‘s ‘Only Human‘ shows little to no sign of growth as it remains below the 30,000 unit mark in the UK two months of its release.
Meanwhile, Elijah Blake‘s latest EP ‘Drift‘ sees 2,590 new purchases made in the last week push it to sales of 14,911 while worldwide sales of Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Ultraviolence’ sit pretty at the 1,241,000 mark!

If you want to make this competition of who’s QUEEN… measure their success the accurate way, consider those numbers! Fancy reached 4 million last week but congrats to Iggy! I never thought this song would blow up so big but when it was first released it did reach top 30 on iTunes and stayed in the top 50 for the week before it was released to radio or had the video. I know the timing couldn’t have been better with Problem dropping. Fancy definitely left its mark.

Not impressed. Her album should be at least double platinum, but is still struggling for Gold status. Lousy. An album that doesn’t do even a quarter of the sales that one of its singles does makes a statement about how the public TRULY views the “artist”. Anybody could have made “Fancy” and had the same success with it. She’s not special.

Only 3 albums went 2x platinum last year. Hit singles don’t lead to equal album sales. It’s been that way for over 10 years, since the rise of iTunes. It has gotten even worse due to streaming. Stans put so much focus in album sales as if they are all that matters when the reality is they are quickly becoming obsolete. The New Classic was the most streamed album if the year. It just shows you this generation prefers other methods of enjoying music.
Bragging about streaming is a joke. That’s like being a fan of a poorly selling graham cracker and saying “…but it was the most sampled cracker at the supermarket”. Like it matters. If Iggy’s album had a lot of streams but weak overall sales, then that makes me think people weren’t impressed enough by what they heard to buy it.
Here you all are again acting like sales haven’t plummeted even further since Spotify became popular in the US. The proof is right there. Streaming jumped by like 100%+ this year alone while album AND single sales both dropped double digits. How were songs in the top 10 last year only selling 75-80K a week? Spotify, VEVO, and maybe Pandora are exactly why.
