Fresh Details On Mariah Carey’s “Nearly Finalized” Return To Sony Music Surface

As reported earlier this month, Mariah Carey is believed to be extremely close to inking a deal with to Sony’s Epic Records.

The news has many in the industry buzzing, as not only would it signify the diva’s triumphant return to the umbrella that launched her career, it comes at a time when her status as a charting artist is in limbo.

Interestingly, the latter has reportedly factored into negotiations.

Details below…

Billboard shared:

Just months shy of the 10-year anniversary of The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey and Antonio “L.A.” Reid are prepping another kind of comeback. According to multiple sources, the 45-year-old singer is returning to Sony Music through Epic Records, where Reid has served as chairman since 2011.

A nearly finalized multi-album deal would see Carey’s first new material through the label since 1999’s Rainbow, beginning with a greatest-hits set to coincide with her upcoming residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. (An Epic representative declined to comment.)

Although Carey left Sony on tumultuous terms — she signed a four-album, $80 million deal with EMI’s Virgin Records in 2000, eager to distance herself from ex-husband and former Sony Music head Tommy Mottola — there are plenty of reasons why rejoining makes sense now. Doug Morris, current chairman/CEO of Sony Music, brought Carey to Island Def Jam in 2003 when he was running Universal Music Group. Reid, then head of Island Def Jam, oversaw her Mimi-powered 2005 comeback. Joey Arbagey, a collaborator of Carey’s during the making of the six-times platinum Mimi, is now executive vp A&R at Epic. And of course there is her massive Sony catalog: Carey’s seven studio releases, a live EP and four hits packages have sold a combined 43.9 million albums, according to Nielsen Music, including the septuple-platinum Music Box and Daydream. Her output for UMG, which spanned six albums, has sold just 9.7 million by comparison.

According to an insider privy to terms of Carey’s new contract, her recent turmoil, which includes a pending divorce from husband of six years Nick Cannon, scared away most other suitors. “Sony’s was the only deal on the table, and it came in far lower than she expected.” How low? Carey “was asking for a $3 million advance; she didn’t get it.” (Carey is represented by attorney Donald Passman, who didn’t return Billboard’s request for comment.)

Intriguing, particularly the last part.

We could go into the pros, cons, and all in between, but we’ll save the keystrokes and instead put our hands together in prayer as that’s exactly what Mimi needs.

Judging by the “alleged” $3 million advance that she lobbied for, it’s clear she still sees herself as a viable charting act and the suggestion that she didn’t get it means she quite literally has to prove herself in today’s climate.

Thankfully, it seems the team waiting for her at Epic look like the right fit on paper.

      • SMH January 30, 2015

You can sit. Janet doesn’t need to crawl back to her old label and follow other hasbeens to vegas. You stan for katy perry, so why are you even talking?

LOL BYTCH PLEASE, NONE OF JANET’S ALBUMS EVER SOLD 58K, EVEN DREAM STREET SOLD MORE LOL. NOW SIT UNTIL KATY PAYOLA CAN MATCH EVEN ONE OF QUEEN JANET’S ALBUM SALES LOL

      • Al February 1, 2015

Janet’s already signed for Vegas like Mariah. Janet’s completely irrelevant. Mariah is a has-been, but she at least has a presence.

  7. Slay_Hive January 30, 2015

Why is she so thirsty for commercial success? It’s time to let it go and just make music for your fans. See, that’s the reason Barbara Streisand can still get a platinum album.

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) January 30, 2015

This is the 2nd time I caught your weak ass clinging to Barbara. Trash h** stop worrying about Mariah and go fetch B***** a #1 single.

      • Slay_Hive January 30, 2015

LOL Girl you mad ain’t ya? Bey doesn’t need a number 1 single. She’s still able to get platinum albums like Barbara 😉

You’re calling Mariah thirsty, yet you beat The Elusive Chanteuse fanbase here to comment. As I said before, keep living through Beyoncé with your slow ass left eye.

      • Slay_Hive January 30, 2015

Yes she is thirsty. All her insecure ass does is chase after hits. Honey nobody is living through Beyonce nor do I want or have to. Stop living through Mariah. You about to have a damn stroke because I called her thirsty, and take that Mariah pic down and put up a pic of your big ugly black ass face b****! I’m sure you won’t though! 😉

it doesn’t matter where she harpoons herself now. she’s washed up and over the hill. the GP is not here for anything new from her. nobody’s gonna buy anything “new” by her. MIMI was her only hit album at Universal. the others either underperformed or bellyflopped. all she’s worth is for what USED to be not what is NOW.

    • Stephy. January 30, 2015

Katy Perry is gonna suffer from this BIG TIME too. Her face is already aging & the bit* could NEVER sing. She only hanging on cause she’s young. BASIC perry will NEVER achieve the same success Mariah has… So Sit DOWN FAGGGGG…

      • darkhorse15 January 30, 2015

lol i love that i obviously touched a nerve. the power of my words. i ruined your weekend by pointing out what a collossal hasbeen & flop that middle aged clown MC is and i’m laughing my a*** off becuz of it. KP is relevant in 2015, MC is NOT! seeeeeeeeeettthhhheeeee!!!!! 😉

      • Stephy. January 30, 2015

BASIC PERRY STAN, Your words holds NO power honey. Also, you aren’t talking to some DELUSIONAL Lamb. I am very aware of Mariah’s drought (although LEGENDARY) career. Who cares about 2015??? This is considered to be the WORST music era in HISTORY! And, don’t even get me started on Basic Perry’s whack ass “music”… That’s clogging air-waves 24/7… She cannot sing live PERIOD. She’s gonna struggle the OLDER she gets. And, I will make sure to have BEYONCE’s Superbowl playing while the STRUGGLE (that is yo fav) is muted! BYE

  10. Kemar (@S_C_Jr on Twitter) January 30, 2015

I hope everything works out for her. Mariah is a true talent. As she’s proved many times, never count her out. Every time she falls, she gets right back up!

    • Al February 1, 2015

When?? She got up only one time and that was ten years ago.

  11. Stephy. January 30, 2015

Listen, Mariah is DONE on here on these streets. These kids aren’t buying no MC albums or singles. She made a fool of herself last Christmas… And, the only way she can return, is if she has some type of HUGE hit single that’s undeniable.

What I want is a 25th Anniversary release of her debut. Clive did it with Nippy’s first album when she was alive. Tommy’s daughter found Mimi’s unreleased material. Demo’s & songs that date all the way back to 1985. I want that. I’m not here for today’s music in general. And, definitely not MC’s new “Music”… I just HATE the sound of today’s music & all she’s gonna do is follow that on her next album. Her best bet is to slay Vegas (with her background singers/backing tracks)… And, release old material & footage. Or, release DAMN good NEW music that people CANNOT ignore. There would be NO reason in her keep releasing albums… That no ones even buying. Also, that soprano voice ain’t coming back. Once its damaged its gone forever. Just ask Whitney’s doctor. She needs to start recording music in her new ALTO vocal range. Stop recording songs as a soprano & singing them live as a alto. Makes no sense whatsoever.

With all that being said, Mariah is still a Queen. Love her FOREVER!

When You Believe – Whitney Houston Ft. Mariah Carey

    • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

I love that song. I wish Mariah wrote a song for them to have sung together before Whitney left this world. I hated how they mapped out stuff and Mariah was on her period when they sung it live. STILL I envy the crowds that heard them two on the same stage together.

  14. DTG January 30, 2015

Pathetic when instead of moving forward, you have to crawl back hoping to recapture what used to be. LA Reid was still heading IDJ when her short-lived “comeback” started to flicker out. What’s following him around like an abandoned puppy supposed to do? If she’s gonna regress she may as well go w**** herself to Tommy again. The public heard what she’s been offering lately and decided to not bite.

  15. JDE187 January 30, 2015

Get out of 1995. The past ain’t coming back. Mariah is now old and over the hill and isn’t even respected the way Streisand is to still sell without hits. She better hope Vegas doesn’t flop as bad as that last album of hers so that she can keep up with Nick’s alimony payments.

    • Who? January 30, 2015

He is actually getting nothing in the divorce. There was a prenuptial agreement he signed back in 08.

  16. 2nd Taylor Swift Stan (so ready for the 1989 Tour to slay me hard) January 30, 2015

Ooh! MC, the butterfly, better get it! I’m so proud of her. I already know her weaves gonna be moisturized and completely on point. I just hope that every show will be sold out and that the setlist will have Boy (I need you) cause I’m tired of her paying it dust just because it was one of her FEW flop songs. Lets just hope her prerecorded vocals are great too.

  17. Indie January 30, 2015

Why would a personal divorce scare people away from signing an artist? LOL that last part was obviously the made up shade, Nick Cannon is cool but there is no one on the planet who bought Mariahs music cos he was her husband!

Anyway she is one of the greatest Singer Songwriters of all time, you know Hero she wrote when she was 17 and its one of the worlds classic and timeless songs! She is a lving legend , her last album wa remarkable and I’m glad that she now has her trusted team behind her to make sure she is promoted the right way

    • Terry B January 30, 2015

Labels won’t sign you if they feel your personal life will affect your work ethic. A divorce is a serious thing.

    • Al February 1, 2015

  18. JOHNVIDAL January 30, 2015

Anyway, Mariah is performing in Jamaica today, isn´t she?

    • Al February 1, 2015

Is she there helping to burn the gays to death?

  19. Terry B January 30, 2015

If they won’t even give her a $3M advance you know that contract is crap lol.

    • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

You’re talking like you even know what a contract or $3 million looks like lol

  20. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) January 30, 2015

So many haters and fake h*** on this page.

Anyway, Mariah continue to do what you do best which is making music. Again, I don’t see all these essays and career evaluations when JLo, Celine, etc are releasing music that aren’t flying off shelves yet when it comes to Mariah it’s an issue. Look at Christins Aguilera who’s still in her 30s; she’s not selling anything more than Mariah not making waves anywhere but on The Voice but why aren’t you fools calling that out? Mariah’s first record was released almost 30 years ago. No one says on too forever but her longevity is incomparable. Which other female could get a #1 and #1 single both after 18 years? Beyonce certainly can’t do it and she’s said to be “slaying”.

Anyway, if Mariah was “thirsty for chart success” she would’ve been EVERYWHERE promoting Chanteuse but she didn’t. The woman hasn’t even released another single since the album came out. It’s clear that you’re (haters/fake fans) the only ones who are bothered not her with all the stats and accolades.

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) January 30, 2015

      Stays on top forever*

    • britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

Beyonce’s last #1 single was the same year Mariah had her last #1 single and Bey was 27 years old and Mariah was 38. Tragic. Embarrassing. Overrated

      • DeCarlo’Fung January 31, 2015

But the difference is that Mariah’s last #1 hit was her 17/18th! Bey just reached her 5th! Let’s use our brains please and stop being delusional!

      • DeCarlo’Fung January 31, 2015

Oh you’re not shading Mariah so i take that back! lol

      • Al February 1, 2015

Mariah bought her #1s with iTunes coupons and Payola. She had a fit when her fans didn’t make her #1 a few years ago.

    • LDN Chick January 30, 2015

Mariah certainly has amazing longevity but don’t imply Beyonce doesn’t just because she didn’t get a #1. Are you forgetting Beyonce can still get multi platinum albums, top that chart, her songs and presence is still undeniably popular in this industry and she’s outlived her peers (Xtina, Britney etc) so don’t be delusional.

      • britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

don’t be stupid, the album was overrated and fell off the charts like a month or 2 after release. Let’s not mention 1989 surpassed it’s album sales in just 2 months.. if anyone is doing the damn thing, it’s Taylor.. Beyonce’s sales are mediocre compared to her. She sells just as much as Rihanna, Perry, JT, & everyone out today. She ain’t nothin special

      • LDN Chick January 30, 2015

How am i being stupid when Im only stating facts. Name one other album last year that went platinum (let alone MULTI platinum) last year besides 1989? I’ll wait…

And comparing her to Taylor doesn’t change facts of what I said so you can stop clinging now because Im sure Taylors sales are better than your faves too.
And no her album did not fall off the charts after 2 months RECEIPTS for that please? Because last time I checked she was certified 2x plat after 4 months.

      • britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

Bangerz, Prism, 20/20 Experience all went platinum.. even My Everything. Music was stale in 2014 so she was the only one, but then Taylor showed Beyonce how it’s done and how it feels like to actually slay. Stop being delusional

      • LDN Chick January 30, 2015

No I said last year fool. Just sit down and stop calling me delusional when you don’t even know the point I am trying to make it has NOTHING to do with Taylor Swift who has a great audience. Im talking about Beyonce as an artist having longevity despite not having a #1 single… Get it? Please explain where I am being delusional by stating those facts? Or are you just mad because I mentioned s****** who ran her course after Circus. Beyonce>>>>All her peers of her generation in terms of longevity.

      • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

The FACT that Mariah has seen artists as phenomenal as Whitney Houston to basic ass Katy Perry speaks on itself. No Mariah album is not certified, but it can easily be turned around.

      • britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

do you suffer from a brain tumor? Britney only had one flop era, that doesn’t mean she is completely over. And no I did not get your point because it was embarrassingly a flop delusional point. Beyonce’s only popular in the US.. you rarely heard any of her songs from her last album play anywhere else in the world lol

      • LDN Chick January 30, 2015

Lmao keep clinging to the hope she can make a comeback. Literally no one gives a f*** about her anymore. Just face it shes done, Beyonce outdone every year since 2003. And thats funny because I am from London not the US and she is huge over here. When her Tour came everyone was after tix.

      • LDN Chick January 30, 2015

And do you care to explain how my point was flop and delusional? Where are the lies about Beyonce maintaining good longevity after 18 years? The only flop delusional point is you thinking Britney will happen again.

  21. britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

Thank god. I’ve been waiting for a move like this.. She finally stopped working with flop Jermaine D, yea they made gems back then, but they didn’t take music seriously, it was all fun & games. LA Reid will for sure so anything possible to get the queen her 2nd massive comeback. I smell a good comeback and possibly her 19 #1 single. It’s possible & I have faith in her! Plus, she looks amazing!

    • SMH January 30, 2015

You seem to forget that Jermaine Dupri is the one who produced the majority of her hits and her last comeback album, not LA Reid.

      • britneyraycarey January 30, 2015

But they aren’t taking it serious anymore. It’s all fun and buddy buddy like type of business. I want her to get to work b**** and become like Barbra. I at least want her to be 58 and still have a #1 album on Billboard

      • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

        A) JD CO-produced her later hits, not majority.
        B) However, I do agree on the LA Reid comment. He is awful. I don’t even think he has it in him to bring coffee back from Starbucks. He just is eh. I’ll never forgive him for scraping Skydiving off the Memoirs album

      • Stephy. January 31, 2015

JD did NOT make majority of her hits BYE

    • Al February 1, 2015

LA tried to give Jennifer Lopez a comeback. Flop. He ain’t all that. Look what he did to Janet.

  22. LDN Chick January 30, 2015

Well good for her I guess.

  23. gina January 30, 2015

I think Basic Perry stans need to keep quiet until her combined album sales can match Mariah’s combined SINGLES sales.

  24. FixItJesus January 30, 2015

Mariah appeals to a lot of different audiences…pop, R&B, adult contemporary…but those categories are dominated by Taylor, Beyonce & Adele in terms of sales. I feel like she’s more than capable of making quality, Grammy worthy material, but I don’t know if she can push the same numbers. I think she’s more than worth a $3 million advance though.

  25. Beysus January 30, 2015

“the album was overrated and fell off the charts like a month or 2 after release.” <— Yea sure even though there was absolutely no promotion for it… *throws tea everywhere*

    • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

Why are you here? You try so hard to fit in with the American BeeHive, but even they don’t claim you. You are the Farrah Franklin of the BeeHive… you are just here to fill in the shoes until the REAL bad b****** like Metzo & Richie Rich come in. Go sit down and blow air under your kilt.

  26. Theman January 30, 2015

Forget a three million dollar advance. Mariah is “IT”. This last era was just all over the place. She’ll have a strategy for this album, she’ll bring fresh producers. She just needs to revamp everything & try some different things. She should also go for a more uptempo sound & do a few surprise collabos that are r&b/pop driven as opposed to HIPHOP sounds.. You don’t have to appeal to Just kids to see success. She’s been counted out on many occasions, only to rise like an authentic artist that she actually is. People who’s favorite artist can’t score one number one hit are void..

  27. Theman January 30, 2015

Billboard has become a trashy gossip site. They just toss SHYT out there..

  28. Theman January 30, 2015

Adele & Taylor have nothing to do with Mariah, although they all cater to different audiences it’s different. Mariah is the most successful female artist ever !!!! Nuff said..

  29. TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

Interesting. I will hold my peace until after I finish watching her in Jamaica tonight, even though I need to say, if she can get $20+ million for like 15 shows a year in Las Vegas, then I know she can get $3 million for an album advancement. That is all.

  30. Beysus January 30, 2015

“Why are you here?” Why are YOU??? F*** outta here…

    • TheElusiveLamb January 30, 2015

If you have something to say, say it directly to me b****. You see my name, click reply.

  31. Beysus January 30, 2015

    LOL

  32. Theman January 30, 2015

Furthermore, Mariah doesn’t have anything to prove.. But all of the girls that you feature on this dusty blog that can’t go gold do. Write articles for those people.. You take on Mariah like she’s a science project, trying to dissect every damn thing. Help these other chicks score a hit single..

    • L21480 January 31, 2015

“Doesn’t have anything to prove” is what stans of HAS-BEENS say after they repeatedly flop and it becomes painfully clear they are incapable of ‘proving’ anything anymore. If Mariah’s drunk, lunatic washed up ass has nothing to prove then it’s time for her to retire. For as long as she insists on trying to sell her bland, boring off key forgettable new music that nobody cares about to the public for profit then that over the hill Trix rabbit DOES have something to prove. Too bad the only thing she keeps proving is that no one cares anymore.

  33. Gee January 30, 2015

Whatever said deal is worth it’s more most will ever see. I’m sure with publishing copyrights songwriting and production Mariah’s doing just fine financially. To add to that her Vegas Residency Mimi has old money and her net worth rivals some if not many of today’s pop stars. This move back to Sony has been in motion since LA left Universal also this will help her gain all copyrights ownership to her back catalogue so if anything besides her love of music this was more a business move.

    • Cough Cough January 30, 2015

Mariah is worth more than every Pop star besides Madonna. She is the richest black female entertainer

  34. Meteorite January 30, 2015

It’s completely asinine how some of you commenters sound. Just because an album does not go to number 1 or have a string of hits, does not mean the album or artist is a flop. Quality always out lasts quantity, and time has always proven that to be a fact. More so it’s sickening how some of you try and take away an artist accolades as if they need to prove something to you personally. And if you only like an artist because they are “Number 1″ then I am sorry, I find you shallow, immature and ignorant. Music is supposed to be about the soul and the way it makes you feel and think way you think, not who’s phantasmal face is the flavor of the moment. Enjoy music for what it does for you, not because the media says so.

You people are hilarious. A year ago you swore that last flop album was gonna slay lives and to say that didn’t happen is the understatement of the year. Mariah’s next album is going to flop, no matter what label she’s on. Bookmark me. She’s over and not coming back.

I would be worried if I was a lamb. I’ll say this way, when an artist can’t sell anymore alive, ALL of their old music will once they’re dead. I smell MJ and Whitney.

Why would you say such a thing mark

      • Mark111 January 30, 2015

I’m just saying, these labels are shady. They’re not making any money, so they’ll go there to get an artist to sell again. The same label that MJ called racist and a devil (Sony) is the same label that now owns his catalog. Releasing albums, having tours all while the man is dead. Better take a second look at Clive with Whitney as well.

Your stupidity rivals that of Rihanna’s vocal ability. Tragic

The only reason she didn’t get a $3 million dollar advance is because Epic cannot afford to give artists a $3 million dollar advance. LA Reid burned a lot of the label’s money since he got that position and they needed a cash boost to ensure the label is liquid. They can no longer tosh out cash in droves until LA Reid has got a cash cow on his hands.

That said, Mariah Carey is one hit away from a major comeback. She is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, one of the best producers of all time and one the greatest singers of all time. She is simply one of the best record artists, in every sense of the word, of all time. No one comes close to Mariah’s artistry and ability, she exceeds her peers on all counts.

This is a good start for Mariah, she has experienced a lot and will put it all in the music, she will release something revolutionary and I cannot wait to hear it.

This played out cow can sign with as many record labels and record as many more albums as her goner voice can struggle to croak out but a commercial comeback is not happening. Not only is the milk spoiled, it’s curdling at this point. She better hold tight to that desperate Vegas gig and hope they don’t quickly realize what Virgin Records and American Idol did after she signed on the dotted line… that’s she wasn’t worth the money.

The delusions are real in this comment section. I remember telling a lamb like two years ago,Mariah was going to flop and I got called every name in the book. People talking about she’s “IT” but artist that are it dont sell less than 100,000 worldwide with an album. Also Mariah isn’t the best selling female artist, Madonna and Celine have sold more than her with way less #1’s.That’s not to take anything from Mariah, Mariah is a legend and should be respected, but trying to use Beyonce as a rebuttal is just stupid. In this day in age ,besides the terrible music being pushed, it’s literally the fans that make people not even want to give an artist a chance because these fan bases are so over barring. People act like you can’t like more than one artist also, which is seriously hurting music sells.Time will tell, maybe Mariah will slay again , maybe you won’t either or she has earned her place in history as one of the most talented vocalist in mainstream history. Let’s not even get into people calling Britney Spears a legend, when she’s far from it, she’s a talentless product that a certain demographic ate up until they were full, hence why she’s so young sitting in entertainment limbo,Vegas…
