Iggy Azalea Talks “Black” Music, Elvis Presley & Misogyny With ‘Vanity Fair’

Weeks before she’s set to attend this year’s Grammy awards ceremony, ‘Beg For It‘ rapper Iggy Azalea has revealed that she is confused by the heat she is currently facing for performing what she has called “black music.”

Speaking to ‘Vanity Fair‘, the entertainer opened up when quizzed on claims that the criticism she was facing was misogynistic, comparing herself to the likes of Macklemore, Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones.

Read below…

Via ‘Vanity Fair’:

‘People have said I’m not real rap or real hip-hop,” says this year’s four-time Grammy nominee Iggy Azalea, “but I don’t care if people think I’m pop or rap. Everyone interprets music differently.” The nearly six-foot-tall Azalea (born Amethyst Amelia Kelly) grew up in the small town of Mullumbimby, New South Wales, and was always inspired by rock and roll and rap. At 16, she told her parents she was going on vacation, traveled to Florida, and never went back. After years of struggle and disappointment, Azalea, now 24, had massive success last summer with her catchy, ubiquitous hit single “Fancy” and No. 1 debut album, The New Classic. Here, she talks with Lisa Robinson about fame, shoes, and sex tapes.

Lisa Robinson: Do you think it’s weird for a white Australian girl to be a rapper?

Iggy Azalea: Well, I never thought it was strange. If you go back to the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley and Eminem—they’ve all basically done black music. I felt this wasn’t that far from what we’ve seen in music history over and over again.

Do you think the criticism aimed at you is misogynistic?

Well, they don’t say that stuff about Macklemore. So, yes, I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina.

With work on her new album underway, one can only hope recent events encourage Iggy and her producers to create a cohesive body of work that sets out to do one thing and one thing only…

Tell her story.

For, if her album sales tell us anything it’s that the general public isn’t completely sold on the story she’s been selling so far, but will be sure to jump on board if the rapper delivers a collection of brilliant Urban Pop tracks detailing her journey from New South Wales to the top of the ‘Hot 100.’

Some writers and producers we’d love to see the chart topper team up with to create said “real” album? Rick Rubin, Linda Perry, Ester Dean and ‘Who’s That Girl’ chanteuse Robyn.

Do you agree?

  2. BOOBIE January 7, 2015

BOY BYE! Everyone DRAGGED Macklemore when he won those Grammys. It has nothing to do with the fact that you’re a woman. It’s because you suck!

    • truth (icki is on the radio cryn cause THEPINKSHIT Flippidy flipidy FLOP!!! January 7, 2015

Exactly what world does she live in Macklemore was drag up and down the Internet all of last year how quick people forget and LOL at her using Eminem the Rolling Stones and Elvis Pressley as examples will we all know they stole black music

  3. BOOBIE January 7, 2015

And I love how she refers to rap and hip-hop as “black” music

    • New classic January 7, 2015

But wasn’t all of black twitter calling it “black music” when she was catching hell??? Now that she refers it as that y’all still mad???

    • Carlitos January 7, 2015

Haven’t you heard, all music is “black music.” Y’all try to take credit for everything.

  4. Beysus January 7, 2015

    Crap… Girl bye…

  5. Lobe January 7, 2015

It’s not a problem she use black music… It’s just that fake southern rap voice makes it seem like she’s mimicing the culture.. like it’s just that easy.

  6. Rima January 7, 2015

Funny because black people label hip hop as black music lol

  7. Rima January 7, 2015

I don’t see this chick going anywhere anytime soon

    • FAF January 7, 2015

      Right she ain’t nowhere now

  8. Wheresmyjizzle January 7, 2015

    Haters keep seething

  9. #TeamTinashe Stan “Midnight Sun” January 7, 2015

There is a lot of contradictions within the “black media” but that’s another story but I’ll give Iggy a pass because we all know she was getting HOT before “Fancy” and I’m not an Iggy fan. And in my opinion “Fancy” is a hip hop/pop record it doesn’t matter if you are not a fan of the broad or whatever the case might be. And if dhe is nominated for a grammy for “Best Hip Hop album” than that’s a problem.
    Anyways……

    • I STAN(D) FOR TALENT January 7, 2015

What a coincidence, I’m listening to ‘Blackwater.’ It’s amazing and somewhat better and more polished than ‘Aquarius.’

      • #TeamTinashe Stan “Midnight Sun” January 7, 2015

I said the same thing. It’s more edgier and would of been a perfect debut album.

  10. Iggy, Queen of the pre op trannys January 7, 2015

Not only is she a whack lyricist, she also dumb as a brick. i got nothing from this interview except the he has a new v*****. and i recall Macklemore getting the same amount of criticism but he never played the victim like she did.

    • remy January 7, 2015

but who’s checking for your dried up fav who voice was gone before her prime.

  11. mike January 7, 2015

    I agree!

No one went after Eminem but suddenly they found an easy target and went after her. I do believe it ws because she was a woman and strangly enough the attacks happened as soon as madame nicki was releasing her album

  12. Rima January 7, 2015

People come after iggy cause she’s a female

  13. New classic January 7, 2015

I don’t see the problem with her getting nominated for best hip hop album. I mean it was a rap album. Childish Gambino is also nominated in that category and have y’all heard his album?? Nothing near hip hop. It slowly turned into a frank ocean album at the end but y’all wanna give Iggy azalea s***??? If anyone is killing hip hop it’s yung thug, migos etc who rap about Molly, weed and killing ppl. Bye.

  14. lollipop January 7, 2015

Iggy: wahh i have a mangina so don’t pick on me because i’m a wack rapper and deserve a free pass at least Elvis had talent… f*** outta here!

  15. Kitty Puurrzz January 7, 2015

Her next album will SLAY. Mark my words.

  16. sorry,not sorry January 7, 2015

Eminem never played the pitty card, he let his talent speak for him when will Uggly?

  17. Wendy January 7, 2015

is she still crying? i’m over it.

  18. S****** Blonde January 7, 2015

All this fuss isn’t because she’s a woman but because she’s white. Eminem, Macklemore and any causasian person who make “Black” music has suffered the hate of the black community, except Elvis, he was the one who put Rock ‘n Roll in the map, it didn’t even had a name before him, this music was mostly unknown by most americans, only people from the south (white trash/blacks) were aware of that genre [which wasn’t created by blacks only], it was a fusion of many genres, including Country music, is all an evolution like Blues and Folk music together created Jazz. To be honest whites don’t care about this, you don’t see us attacking black artists who make the so called “White” music, like country for example, all this is redundant since almost all music genres roots can be traced in Europe, who were the musicians of the world in the classical era?

  19. RatedR January 7, 2015

But when She did Talk about her story in “WORK” the song that gets overlooked , no one was saying it then because it was a urban hit . But because one of her songs transitioned into pop , here comes the hate . Ppl act as if IGGY hasn’t worked hard all last year and before it’s not like she just blew up , fancy was not an instant hit as it was already out before it blew up (three months to be exact) and it was the third single . She has perfected her craft and states she is into growing both on stage and lyrically . I think the flack she gets is unfair and could be called reversed-racism. Everything is not white or black and everything is not racist . Just give her a chance to grow and better herself – instead of trying to bring her down and trying to get rid of her , then complain that there is no other female rappers other than Nicki.

    • New classic January 7, 2015

P E R F E C T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ppl tend to forget THIS IS ONLY HER FIRST ALBUM. People are still get tuning introduced to her. Nicki had a buzz YEARS before she dropped and she was everyone’s song. Iggys still growing give the girl a break

  20. cus im a lady January 7, 2015

i don’t think she will see the success of “fancy” again people are on to her gimmicks

    • k January 7, 2015

      people love Rihanna

  21. Anaconda blu January 7, 2015

But when will she prove all the critics wrong?

  22. xedos January 7, 2015

N***** are hypocrites. How many black countries do these rappers tour? None. They all go to white countries to get white money. Why they think it would not influence white artist.?
They want the white money, but they don’t want white people do the music

    • God January 7, 2015

and how many of the white artist tour those black countries?

    • Jansel January 7, 2015

How many black people actually spend money? Why wouldn’t they tour the white countries? They need to make their money back after their own community illegally downloads their album.

  23. Natalie2 January 7, 2015

she’s starting to come off as a cry baby. either toughen up and get a thicker skin or quite because the criticism is only gonna get worse

  24. 2 lumps January 7, 2015

i don’t think people will ever forget those mean hurtful tweets she tweeted a few years back….

  25. Merril Owns January 7, 2015

Love her. Hopefully the new album is ratchet from top to bottom.

  26. Geisha girl January 7, 2015

The thing is that Macklemore didn’t have industry help, he built everything from the ground up with one of his friends and never had the desire to be discovered which was very evident in his hot 97 interview where he said he was surprised Thrift Shop was even receiving airplay. The music has serious substance, the only track with even an ounce of the depth of songs like Wing$ and Neon Cathedral off “The Heist” are “Don’t Need Y’all” and “Work”

Every time she opens her mouth now it becomes more painfully obvious she’s only concerned with being famous and commercial. What honestly happened to the girl from Australia who was struggling when she came to Miami with nothing? She’s lost touch of EVERYTHING

    • Paulo January 7, 2015

so a distribution deal with Sony just fell on his lap? hahaha ok *sips*

  27. Paulo January 7, 2015

what she says is true because people are STILL letting Eminem and his mysogynistic b******* get a pass… however, while I wish that she proves herself a real rapper with her next record, she is STILL refusing to apologize for the s*** she said to Azealia on Twitter and that’s problematic. Can’t her boyfriend break it down to her or something like that?

  28. Paulo January 7, 2015

I mean it wouldn’t hurt for her to apologize out of respect for the black community. something so simple would change a lot of people’s perspectives on and about her.

  29. Flash80 January 7, 2015

Yawn. This totally talentless napper is tiresome. For a minute I was more entertained by her backlash than her music, but even it’s getting tedious now. Let’s just reconcile that Iggy is a machine-created, media-propped phony and wait out what’s left of her fifteen minutes.

  30. Mark111 January 7, 2015

Yawnnn. Girl, just make your music and shut up. Funny she wants to be called a rapper but fail to realize that ALL rappers are/were put to the test to see who’s real and the fake. Rather it was street battling, freestyling or now criticized on the web. But I’ll just state the female side of it. Lil Kim, Nicki, Foxy and all the other ladies were all questioned if they write their music or not. Missy on the under construction album even stated that she’s a MC, but people don’t think that she is and that was MISSY! Same with Hill, if anything it’s much easier today because all you have to do is trend on vine and you got a hit. Em was ignored for being White, wasn’t til Dre got ahold of him and gave him an IN. And you know what he done? Showed the WORLD that he’s one of the best. Even the media was in his @ss over his lyrics. So come again with the it being from twitter and blogs for you Iggy. If you can’t take it, go be a pop star and even they’re not taking seriously by most.

  31. @RealMattPhoenix January 7, 2015

This racist S*** needs to end omg.
    .
last time I checked, music wasn’t exclusive to 2ne1

  32. We Found Rihanna January 7, 2015

    Iggy is a FLOP!

  33. MISHKA January 7, 2015

“Do you think the criticism aimed at you is misogynistic?

Well, they don’t say that stuff about Macklemore. So, yes, I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vag*ina.”

Every rapper that has tried to sell pop music and dress it up as rap/hip hop music has been called out.

Hip Hop is not just a music genre, it is a community and authenticity is key. Yelawolf, Paul Wall, Marc Miller, Eminem have not been called out because they are authentic, original and talented. Malckemore, Soulja Boi, Nicki Minaj, Two Chainz, Malckemore and You, have been called out because you’re horrible untalented rappers who make pop music and dress it up as Hip Hop.

Just imagine what the community would be like if the Black Eyed Peas called their music hip hop? Exactly.

Iggy should just shut it and let the music T.I is writing for her do the talking, the more she talks, the more people find ways to discredit her, as if that were possible considering her music discredits her already; but then again when someone is digging a hole, let them dig.

    • @RealMattPhoenix January 7, 2015

I see what you did there mentioning BEP, everything you said is true when you put it in that aspect.
      |
But then as a not black person, would you tell me what the “hip hop culture” is though?
      |
Because since you’re saying people like BEP aren’t hip hop, then are you saying you have to be all about the thug life and 7/11?

  35. nicki will slay January 7, 2015

She won;t admit white privlage tho. If she can get a grammy nom then why not FLo’RIDA or PITBULL. She is that type of rapper so why can’t they get rap album nominations???????

  36. sinterklaas January 7, 2015

    • DTG January 7, 2015

Nope. If I’m gonna be subjected to her fake a**, then I’ll give my not so favorable opinion of her. When they keep her off my radio and off my news sites, then I’ll let it go. Until then…
