Tinashe is playing no games with her plan for superstardom.
The singer has unwrapped the video for ‘Bated Breath’ from her debut album ‘Aquarius’ and revealed that she financed it herself.
Speaking to W about the six hour shoot, the 22-year-old said:
“It wasn’t a big production or anything.
The label didn’t finance the video, so she decided to take things into her own hands. “I don’t like to sit around waiting for people to do things for me. So when I know my label’s not going to produce music videos, I’ll either make them myself or I’ll find people that I think are cool and reach out to them directly. I’m like, ‘F*ck it. I’ll just do it.’”
The singer describes the Stephen Garnett visual, which was shot in the Mojave Desert, as “grungier” than past efforts.

This is the second consecutive video where there’s been a deliberate deviation from what the masses want – which is more ‘2 On’ esque songs, visuals, and choreography.
We’re all for artistic versatility and ultimately dig her album for that. However, at such an early stage in the game, it’s about supply and demand and it’s clear no one, no where asked for a near-nine-minute video of randomness in a desert. Especially when she has a blazing single impacting radio in the form of ‘All Hands On Deck’.
Needless to say, the video for the latter needs to arrive pronto.

To be honest, I think the biggest factor is “how much you like the video”, but how much “you respect her for putting out the video on her own?” It’s a sad state of affairs where artists, who are supposed to be representws by major record labels have to create videos on their own time, but that is how the record industry is now. Trust me, If she had it her way, she would have spent the label’s money on a multi-million dollar video, but that is not the reality. On the visual tip I like the video, but on the artistic tip, I respext Tinashe for taking stock in her own talent, and I encourage other artists to do the same. How many artists do we feel had amazing albums, but no promotion? No videos? It’s because of money hungry record labels. Nowadays the independent route is the best, because you may not get the fancy videos (and debt to the record label, because they get all their money back) but you get to give your art the full appreciation and support that it deserves. Way to go Tinashe, that was a BOSS move and it will pay dividends for you in the future.

And I only say this bc although she’s artsy it’s not her strong suit. She appears to be the girl that’s drawn to that but hasn’t ebodied it yet. She’s young so I’m sure she will as she mature.

When I began reading this article, I could only admire this woman’s hustle in getting her own video shot. And when I read the hate in Sam’s post, I reflexively got myself ready to like this. Then I watched this boring, though artsy, video and listened to this slow and tiresome song. I agree with Sam’s assessment — NO! Her money would have been better spent on a more interesting video for a more commercial song.

To the people who stay current in what is going on in music….This song is a James Blake rip off. Am i the only one who hears it? This beat sounds like his song ‘wilhem scream.’ But her vocals are not eerie and hypnotizing enough to get the same effect that james does. But hey, maybe Tinashe is inspired by him which would mean that she has good taste. As for the video, she gets points for originality with the pilot gear and all in that beautiful dessert accompanied by the rewinding effect.
