Rihanna Dishes On New Album / Admits Past Hits Aren’t Timeless

Published: Monday 16th Mar 2015 by Sam

It’s no secret. The campaign for Rihanna‘s eighth studio album has been a mega mess.

Defined by delays and so-so songs, the project has many scratching their heads as to whether the 27-year-old can deliver in the way her status calls for.

In a bid to reassure the growing group of doubters, the Bajan model opened about the rationale for the lack of release date. Per Ms. Fenty, she’s wants the record to be “timeless” going as far as to agree with That Grape Juice by inferring that her previous efforts weren’t.

Her words below…

The intriguing interview came during her press run for new movie ‘Home.’ Check out her chat with MTV:

Hmm.

We commend Rih for admitting that her past releases have largely been fast food music and that she isn’t looking to make a McAlbum again.

That said, given that her past formula has worked so well (on the singles chart), one has to wonder if she’s playing a risky game by reaching for “timeless” now.

To her credit, she’s squeezed a ten year career out of hits that shift her from point “A” to “B.” But because of exactly this one could argue she is tempting fate by trying to cultivate “artistic integrity” at this junction after building an entire career based on the opposite.

Perhaps that’s why ‘FourFiveSeconds’ sounded like such a try-hard tragedy. Greatness isn’t conceived in a boardroom, it’s an innate quality some have and others strive for.

It’ll be fascinating to see if Rih manages to serve up anything worthy of such status. If she does, maybe just maybe she’ll have a chance of reaching the plateau of those who enjoy charts success, critical acclaim, and a discography that’ll far outlast them.

Your thoughts?

I on know about Kanye producing the album, but I just HOPE Rihanna can produce a good body of work like Beyonce’s discography.
Sh!t, even Ciara’s first two albums are timeless.

      • KING RIH March 16, 2015

        What did I just read?

      • Lake Erie March 16, 2015

Even though I’d disagree with only 2 of her albums being timeless. But you sir @KING RIH just read the truth. 😉

      • FutureCIARA March 16, 2015

        And will have to DEAL!

      • CBookem March 16, 2015

She’s growing up. She wants that Adele 21 album and grammy

      • Lake Erie March 16, 2015

        Yes!!! @FutureCIARA

I just knew sooner or later Kanye would headline Glastonbury… Let’s see what Noel Gallagher says about this…

    • OMG Logic!!! March 16, 2015

Disappointing that Glastonbury is staining itself with him.

  3. KING RIH March 16, 2015

Not timeless but everybody and there mama was tryna copy the we found love sound as well as what’s my name.

      Essentially

  4. The Beysus Impact March 16, 2015

Rated R could possibly be considered a “timeless” album…

    • BeyRihLiyah March 16, 2015

      and GGGB

      • The Beysus Impact March 16, 2015

Well yea that’s her 2nd best album to me and that was probably her best era…

    • Royalkev March 16, 2015

Rated R is definitely her best album! Loud & GGGB were her best eras so far!

  5. BeyRihLiyah March 16, 2015

she is growing and she is progressing and I am proud of her

  7. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

TGJ loves to talk about “fast food music” and “McAlbums” when they stan for ThotYoncé. Lmao anyway, It’s great that Rihanna has grown so much musically. I have absolute respect for her.

  8. 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

Please, what of retardyonce is timeless?
    .
All the s*** she does is boring, all the s*** she wears are boring, all her tired weaves are boring.
    .
She’s sucking cammel D 9-5 to stay alive. Howcome?

  9. #TeamTinashe Stan March 16, 2015

Is she stupid is what comes to my mind. Why devalue your own past work? I mean sure you can devalue “Shut Up N Drive” but come on!

Anyways, I do believe she is on the course to making a good top to bottom album for the first time EVER imo!

    • BeyRihLiyah March 16, 2015

b****** shut the f**** up if she doesn’t feel like her past work is timeless than that’s how she feels tinashe will never deliver anything timeless so shut up

  10. Molly March 16, 2015

She has a cute discography but alot of those #1s are forgettable the fact that Beys flop songs make more impact than Rihs hits is hilarious sorry navy. ki

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

But Beyoncé’s songs are trash if Rihanna’s are. Is Single Ladies not a tragic ghetto mess? Sure it was impactful but why are her little fans (*cough* Sam) acting like she’s releasing some type of superb music like let’s not.

    • Slay_Hive March 16, 2015

I can’t believe I actually agree with you! Lmaoooo

  11. rihanna used up w**** March 16, 2015

That song DID NOT GO number 1 in any major marker. It took a while to peak as high as it did in some. Bookmark me. SHE IS DONE!

    • rihanna used up w**** March 16, 2015

SHE is done! Her movie being number 1 in the UK? There is no film being released over there and It is a kids movie. They tend to do well. Let see if she can sell a movie with her real face showing. She will peak at 10 years. 2005 – 2015. After, she will free fall.

    • LB March 16, 2015

It has been three years, where is your favs album or does Calvin Harris still have a gag order on his music?

  12. LB March 16, 2015

LOUD is most definitely timeless even though she may not feel it. It is one of her most iconic eras to-date, hit after hit after global iron clad hit, back to back.

I’m glad she is hungry for it this time around, this album will be her best to date and I am so here for it. I cannot wait.

    • TheElusiveLamb March 16, 2015

I think GGGB then Loud are her most memorable eras. She did everything perfect with non-stop hits during those eras.

      • LB March 16, 2015

        I agree

  13. AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

It’s like I said on the Britney post but reworded: If she’s gonna come back to the game she needs to make music for herself and music she feels will have longevity. What’s already a plus for Rihanna is that she is mentally stable unlike Ms Spears, and she still has time.

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

Typical beyboon worried about queen Britney. Haha

      • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

LOOL and you’re concerned with me why? @Slayriah you’re a disgrace to the Lambs

      • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

        You’re a disgrace to humanity b*****!

      • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

oooooooh burn, you really got me there @slayriah, recycling my own words. Very original! Stay pressed and concerned with me instead of prepping for your SAT’s bittch

      • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

SAT’s? girl sit down with that wack ass attempt at dragging me. You brought my fave into this when this has absolutely nothing to do with her. Btw, you are trash and most definitely a disgrace like the rest of the BrokeHive.

      • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

And you’re still responding cos? Okay, yh, wow, cool, whatever, I’m quickly losing interest in this. Have you got something drag-worthy to say or you going to continue wasting both our times. LOL please don’t be wishy washy as if you’re attached to s****** via umbilical cord, and I believe you were the first to mention Beyonce on the Britney post that had nothing to do with her when you made the REACH and said Britney was more talented than her. LOL then you back-pedalled and said Britney USED to be better than beyonce which was even more of a self-drag.
Now, if choose to continue to respond and embarrass yourself further… make it worth my while sweetheart.

      • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

Wait…what? Honey you are reaching for the stars! You’re clearly forgetting what was said on that Britney post because I don’t recall saying those words. You’re pathetic and delusional for trying to twist my words. Seriously you’re nothing but a weak basic ass Ho. I said that a young Britney was much better than a young Beyoncé as a performer. Beyoncé was not that great on the stage before Sasha Fierce era. Stop being pressed. If it’s not true then you wouldn’t be so pressed and fixated on something I said over a week ago(?). Log out move along ashy

      • AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

LOL! Not good enough Slayriah quit wasting my time, how is it twisting words? LOL and when did 4 days become a week ago, I’m certain there a 7 days in a week but correct me if i’m wrong dear. SCREAMS So you can’t count and you can’t spell, I guess I was right bout those SAT’s boo. Quit exposing your ignorance!

“She was a phenobemonal performer in her prime. She was actually WAY better than young Beyoncé that’s for sure.”

        *
The only person who is weak here is YOU, since you’re behaving like a dumbass pressed emotional k*** and you decided to jump in my reply box because I mentioned your emotionally unstable fave. LOL yeah i’m pressed when you’re the person continuing to vie for my attention today.
Well take some notes from Britney and do what she couldn’t bring herself to do… give the f*** up before you lose your sanity.

  15. The Beysus Impact March 16, 2015

Out of those 13 #1’s, I can only think of 5 at the very most that will be memorable: Umbrella, LTWYL, Only Girl, We Found Love, and Diamonds

    • Tyler March 16, 2015

      Only Girl?

      • The Beysus Impact March 16, 2015

Yea I’m being generous. Got to have something from Loud. Either that or What’s My Name…

  16. LB March 16, 2015

I’m also glad she is making music for herself, she has grown a lot in this industry and sees herself in a new and different light.

That break was good for her, she is coming with her “Ray of light” moment and I am here for all of it.

  17. 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

    Rihanna’s most iconc/timeless songs:
    1)SOS
    2) unfaithful
    3) umbrella
    4) take a bow
    5) rude boy
    6) only girl
    7) what’s my name
    8) cheers (drink to that)
    9) we found love
    10) where have you been
    11) diamonds
    12) stay

  18. TheElusiveLamb March 16, 2015

I love that she’s growing. I don’t think her songs even have time to become timeless (bc of the short lived eras), but I think Umbrella, Diamonds, maybe We Found Love (¿), and maybe Russian Roulette (¿ One day ¿) are going to be extremely timeless. R8 seems to be promising as well as the Home soundtrack and movie. I know the movie will be cute. My niece and Goddaughter are going together. #R8

This should be a lesson to everyone, take school seriously. An education has got value not only to society, but to your own mental stimulation, lest you write like the person above.

Not only does this person confuse sale with sell, but this person also confuses well with where. How you function in a civilized society is beyond me, but then again the ghettos of Atlanta are not exactly civilized are they.

  20. tits mcgee March 16, 2015

And who does produce timeless hits in this age? Not many. She has hits are well crafted and we know the words to for 7+ years. Good enough for me.

  21. Jay March 16, 2015

I’m excited to hear this “American Oxygen” joint.

    This is the new America…..

  22. AnnaMaeKeatingsNewWig March 16, 2015

I feel like Rih is having an identity issue with this album – she wants it to be a game-changer and she wants to showcase a stripped-down raw version of herself. But the main concern is that she’s reinvented herself and her style so much that she’s unsure of what direction she should go with, and she doesn’t know how it will be received.

    • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

I have to agree. The roll out on this project seems confused. Like she is not sure what direction to go.

I could see the seamlessness and confidence in previous eras.

  23. Slay_Hive March 16, 2015

The rihtards may clown Bey for not having a #1 single but Bey recognizes her position. She can do whateva she wants. While the other girls have to cling to the Calvin Harris and David Guetta’s of the world. At the end talent always prevails. Hopefully Rihanna doesn’t flop. Fast food singles and fashion are her claim to fame.

    • Beauty March 16, 2015

Rihanna actually REJECTED a Calvin Harris produced record he submitted to her. He produced it, and (I think) Tinashe wrote it. Rihanna rejected the song. I think he had a few others in mind for her too. And she wasn’t interested in those either. Rihanna never spoke on it, but Calvin did. He seemed pretty pissed about it too! Almost as if, “how DARE she turn ME down?!?!”

      • RihHive March 17, 2015

He didn’t seem mad to me. He was just speaking about it matter-of-factly. Rihanna is just not going EDM in this era and he knows it now; no hard feelings. Afterall, Rihanna was his introduction to mainstream America–how can you ever be mad at her?

  24. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

She has also improved so much vocally. She’s been sounding great especially since 2013? She clearly is serious about her craft and music career. Give her the respect she deserves and stop hating peasants. Rih is here to stay!

  25. 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

Fast food singles hey? But didn’t the camel riders single “flopping hurts” run cold on the charts faster than fatyonce could finish her kfc bucket?

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

I doubt that song even charted on the bobbing under hot 100 chart so there was no point in mentioning it. Lmao

      • LB March 16, 2015

Taylor, Justin Timberlake and Adele can chart both singles and albums, but Beyonce doesn’t care about singles, she is an album seller even though her albums have sold about as much as a singles artist 🙂

    • KeKe March 16, 2015

Let’s not forget the flop that was XO
Which also served as one of the main singles
The hive can support trashy songs like 7/11, Partiton and Drunk on c** but pay songs like Pretty hurts and XO dust just shows their taste in music

      • LB March 16, 2015

They did kind of redeem themselves tbh, I mean flawless did flop, let’s not forget that.

      • RihYonce March 16, 2015

Hate to admit it but your right lol I thought XO/ Pretty hurts would be huge smh

      • LB March 16, 2015

Wait, a cover charted higher than the original song? FLATLINES!!!!!

So the hive will support ratchet incoherent garbage like 7/11 but will not support Pretty hurts, they have lost all credibility when it comes to music.

      • Iamdiego March 16, 2015

Let’s not act like Beyonce had Pop radio support (and she hasn’t since 2010). They play what they want to play and Rihanna was giving them what they wanted non stop for years. I feel like they will only have 1 black female dominate (#1’s) on the hot 100 and Beyonce has had her time. Rihanna might be bored with it now.

  26. NENE March 16, 2015

Will her vocals be timeless this go round? I remember hearing Ri’s first album and thinking she had SO MUCH vocal potential. Here ten years later, she’s gotten better but not by a lot. Minimal growth. I wish she would put down the cigs/weed, stop drinking and partying so much and just go away for a year or 2, focus on her vocals and new sound and come back with POKEMON EVOLUTION greatness. But after seeing her 10 year growth pattern, that isn’t happening. With that said I DO LIKE RiRi though and I have come to love her for what she gives me: great workout/clean the house/get ready for the club/drunk dance music….. Bish you better not deprive us of your bread and butter. Stay in your lane, girl!

    • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

I love your write up better than the writing in this post! Nice work and nothing but facts.

  29. TheElusiveLamb March 16, 2015

Anyone want to tell me why Lil’ Kim BeeHive and Beyoncé BeeHive going in on each other and Beyoncé’s BeeHive posting bees on Raven Symone pictures????

    • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

Lol! What’s going on Bey/Bee hives? Do tell!!!

      • LB March 16, 2015

      • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

But Raven said she wasn’t coming for Bey. Just paying homage to the woman who technically was the 1st queen bee with a hive.

Is this why whole reason the Beyhive is upset? Was something said before this?. Because this alone doesn’t make sense..

      • TheElusiveLamb March 16, 2015

Oh I was trying to understand what was going on. Well as much as I don’t care for Lil’ Ming or her fans, she is right. Lil’ Kim fans were called the BeeHive and she’s always been referred to as Queen Bee, but her stands for Queen of Brooklyn and Queen B**** (Debut track). Oh well. Stans will be stans.

      • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

@Elusive Exactly right about stans. It’s not that serious. Oh well.

  30. christinastherealtalent March 16, 2015

YASSSSS This is the Rih I’ve been waiting for! But seriously, it shouldn’t take you 11 years into your career to realize this. Most true artists realize it by their 3rd or 4th album, not their 8th or 9th. They find their own lane within the first 5 years of their career, not 11.

    • Rihboy March 16, 2015

She is still young tho most people by there 9 th album are way over 45 so please stop.

      • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

That’s because most of them have not released an album 9 out of the 10 years of being an artist. DUH.

  31. Rihboy March 16, 2015

I aprecise her honesty!! I disagree partially because I feel like diamonds, we found love, umbrella, and take a bow are timeless songs. However as an unbiased Stan I understand. She is referring to the s&ms and only girl in the worlds. Good for her. I’m only expecting good things from r8. The era promotion has me in the dark a little, but I believe the lengthy wait will be worth it. I’m assuming the album will drop during March madness seeing that the tour is this year. I’m anxious.

  32. RihYonce March 16, 2015

I’m glad that she’s trying to find her identity, she does have a memorable album “Rated R” & “GGGB” was memorable albums I can just feel that R8 is going to be different from her & I’m Excited this album looks like it’s going to be her “4” , but yall coming for Beys hits is weak because she has more platinum selling singles on one album that’s your favs , yall always come for Bey like sit down , nothing is going to change the fact that she’s the hottest chick in the game still after 18 years let that sink in , who’s hotter than the Queen? ……. I’ll wait

  33. RihYonce March 16, 2015

I’m exciting for R8 , hopefully she still has some good uptempo hits tho , not too much slow songs , but either way I honestly think I’m going to like Rihanna can do no wrong

  34. BeyRihLiyah March 16, 2015

        It ain’t critically acclaimed music…

      • LB March 16, 2015

But she’s acclaimed for her style and fashion, which is why she won a fashion icon award. Perks of having a huge brand.

      • 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

Fashion is more acclaimed than being known for shaking your ass and popping your p****

      • The Beysus Impact March 16, 2015

        The delusion…. I thought she was a singer…

      • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

No actually. It was on urban radio.

      • 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

She is a singer that has been iconised by the fashion industry. Your fave is known as a glorified stripper. How is that part of the music industry

      • LB March 16, 2015

She is a singer, which is why she has got 13 #1 hits, she is also in fashion and her brand is huge there. She has a diversified brand, multi-faceted artist.

    • Tyler March 16, 2015

No, Rihanna’s legacy would revolve around her using Chris Browns fist for relevancy. So…

    • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

Speak for yourself. Beyonces legacy will be as one of the greatest performers, Rihanna’s will be for her fashion. We all know which ones more important as a music artist.

      • LB March 16, 2015

Rihanna has got 13 #1s she’ll be known for having the bigger brand. That is why she can dominate both music and fashion.

      • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

Beyonce brand is bigger than Rihanna’s which is why she makes more money off it. She beats Rihanna at everything besides singles. Everyone knows this. Rihanna has 13 songs to top the charts but they both have the same amount of generation defining songs.

      • LB March 16, 2015

Rihanna has 13 #1s, 6 platinum albums, sold over 150 million records, received a music icon award, received a fashion icon award and has grossed over $100 million on tour.

Beyonce will only be known for her entertaining ability, Rihanna has branched out and diversified her brand portfolio.

      • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

Beyonce has sold over 100 million records, has 20 Grammys, A legend award, 5 consecutive #1 albums, Over $300 million worth of Tour Gross, 4 Multi platinum albums, and a career spanning almost 2 decades so far. What has Rihanna branched out in that tops Beyonce besides fashion? Last time I checked, not every music artist needed fashion.

      • LB March 16, 2015

And what is wrong with Fashion, Rihanna has branded herself there and is huge, which is why she received a fashion icon award.

Beyonce tried the fashion thing, I mean you cannot pretend Hood of deadwrong did not happen, it failed because Beyonce is not fashionable.

That said, Rihanna’s brand is still huge in the music business, which is why she has sold more records than Beyonce. In fact looking at how well Rihanna’s music is still doing and how many records Unapologetic sold compared to Beyonce, Beyonce has got little to no chance to catching up to Rihanna’s record sales.

      • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

In never said there was anything wrong with fashion. But it has nothing to do with musicality. I asked you what has Rihanna branched out in besides fashion that makes her portfolio so much more great? Yes Beyonce has experimented with fashion, but as a hobby. She does not not lean on fashion nor is she heavily image driven to sell herself as an artist. She’s had pretty much the same look since 03. Rihanna had to work twice as hard and release double the records close together to outsell her. It’s a certain type of exposure. I’m sorry that does not make ones brand bigger. Bigger brand is demonstrated in real investment, like Touring.

      • Tyler March 16, 2015

Since when was Rihanna’s brand, as a whole, bigger than Rihanna’s? Do Rihanna’s Tours gross more money than Beyonces? No. Do the movies that she stars in gross more than Beyonce’s? No. Does she earn more money with MAC than Beyonce does with Loreal? No. Is her deal with River Island more lucrative than the one that Beyonce has with H&M or Top Shop? No. Does she make more money with Vito Coco than Beyonce does with Pepsi? No. Does she make more money, on average, than Beyonce does? No.
Is Rihanna the highest paid black entertainer since MJ? No….Beyonce is. So what are you talking about?

      • Rihboy March 17, 2015

Rihanna will be known for both she has sold more records and has more number 1 songs! Following as a fashion icon. While bey will just be remembered for two stepping to single ladies, marrying a llama, and faking birth.

      • How Many Drinks March 17, 2015

NO ONE cares about receipts in reality. But their receipts botu thrive in different areas. Thats just a quote when talking about legacy. Mariahs sold more than Whitney, does not mean shes bigger. The fact Rihanna sold more simply because she has more does not put her above Beyonce in any way shape or form. Beyonce will be remember remembered and still be able to sell Tours when she 50, because she is an acclaimed performer. Rihanna is fashion. She has no stand out musicality talent.

      • How Many Drinks March 17, 2015

Death @ the last sentence. If thats the case. Rihanna will be remembered for getting her ass whooped, sleeping around and having minimal talent. Beyonce and Jay Z will remain the most famous and powful black couple in showbiz.

      • Naomi March 17, 2015

Two stepping to single ladies (whatever that looks like) is better than p**** patting to stripper songs.

  37. Tyler March 16, 2015

Look! the real FKA Twiggs…Oh, never mind its just Rihanna.

    • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

      Lol. Very funny b****! 🙂

*Point’s my box of KABOOM cereal at you with two hands*

  38. B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare March 16, 2015

“Rated R” is heads and shoulders above the rest of her discogrpahy, in my opinion, but the fact that she was able to create such an album in a regular “Rihanna cycle” speaks volumes.

She’s taking her time now. I respect this. But I don’t want her to feel any immense pressure to produce an album that screams “hey, look at me. I’m being ‘artistic’ etc….Take your art in new and interesting directions, definitely. But I hope it feels authentic to her. And guess what, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a sure fire Rihanna bop! You know, those songs that say “This is unapologetically (no pun intended) a Rihanna song!” I hope she brings those as well.

This is my most anticipated Rihanna album ever.

    • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

Has everything you wrote. TGJ needs to give Cough, Cough and yourself staff writing duties.

      I actually understand everything y’all write. 🙂

      • tits mcgee March 16, 2015

        **yes to everything

        This special check is annoying

  39. WINTZ March 16, 2015

I still listen to Rated R on repeat.

  40. Sherry March 16, 2015

The word “timeless” is thrown around far too much on this blog. I have forgotten almost every hit single released over the past few years. That’s just the society we live in. EVERYTHING is quick, accessible then pushed to the side for the next hot thing. Rihanna’s songs aren’t any less memorable than any other current artist and that’s the truth.

  41. 내가 제일 잘 나가 March 16, 2015

*20 years later, a reporter sits down for an interview with blue waffle*
    .
Reporter: so Blue Waffle, interesting choice for stage name. Could you let us know why you chose it?
    .
Blue Waffle: I chose the name blue waffle because when I signed to the record label, they told me to #BeyInspired. So I watched a recording of my mom spreading her legs in front of me at the grammy’s.
I was like “damn” is that her lips or sun dried salami

  42. LB March 16, 2015

What will Miguel be remembered for, if people still remember him at all. Keep on hating from outside the club buddy.

  43. LB March 16, 2015

I think Miguel will be more remembered for his wrestling move. At least he has a career outside music because that isn’t working out for him.

    • FutureCIARA March 16, 2015

      I DIED!!!!!!!!

    • Mark111 March 16, 2015

      *Goes to bed* Goodnight! lol

  44. OMG Logic!!! March 16, 2015

To her credit, I felt that Unapologetic had quite a few good songs. She doesn’t have to give up making good singles to make good music. Most of Queen Mariah’s hit singles have stood the test of time because there was both quality and timelessness there.

Having said all this, Sam shouldn’t be so hard on Rihanna. The only memorable songs Thighyonce’s ever released have been Crazy in Love and Single Ladies, and she’s been at it longer.

  45. How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

Coming for Miguel like that does not offend me. I love his music and artistry nothing will change that. He can flop as hard as he wants. He’s still a better artist than Rihanna will ever be.

  46. B2B March 16, 2015

I know they did not come for Pretty Hurts when the 3X platinum, Grammy award winning Drunk In Love out charted the Kanye west/ Paul McCartney assisted 45seconds… And stay, and pour it up, and beautiful, and can’t forget to remember you, and guy. Just know when the “Queen” promotes, she puts your favS to shame.

    • LB March 16, 2015

Did it go 3x platinum because of streams, when did it cross the 2 million sold mark?

      • B2B March 16, 2015

No it did not go 3X platinum because of streams, but I’m pretty sure streams were accounted for just as they are for every other artist… *side eyes 45S chart position*

  47. KeKe March 16, 2015

Loool cling to Beyonce because Miguel has no valid receipts you can hide behind

    • SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) March 16, 2015

      Lmfaooo!!

  48. LB March 16, 2015

LMAO Keke, that’s not true. If he ever does decide to become a pro-wrestler, he has got a receipt he can show to the WWE producers.

  49. How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

I’m not clinging to Beyonce, she’s been one of my faves way before Miguel Lol.

  50. Royalkev March 16, 2015

Wow, that was really honest! I respect Rihanna for that. I totally understand wanting to reach your full potential as an artist. She’s getting older and I think she’s maturing. I think she’s recognizing that and starting to over think. You don’t have to record a bunch of depressing songs to appear to be deep or artistic. I get “rebel” and “fun” when I think of Rihanna and she shouldn’t feel pressured to take herself too seriously.

It’s funny, I think her sound hasn’t been fully tapped into very often. She keeps it too surface (with music like: ‘SOS’, ‘Shut Up and Drive’, ‘Umbrella’, ‘S&M’ and ‘We Found Love’). I always felt like she didn’t care about those songs. Rihanna has an interesting tone and I don’t feel it’s necessary for her to go country either to get critical acclaim. I wouldn’t put her in a lane, I just think it’s best for her to do what’s more natural for her. My favorite ballads from her are: ‘Now I Know’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Take a Bow’. I believe her on those songs! Still, she sounds right at home delivering cuts like: ‘Rude Boy’, ‘La La La’, ‘Breaking Dishes’, ‘Cockiness’, ‘Birthday Cake’, ‘Cheers’ and even ‘Where Have You Been’, ‘Disturbia’, ‘Love without Tragedy’. Rihanna clearly wants a breakthrough! Times like this you have to be clear on who you are as an artist. Evolve with your sound that’s been cultivated and take that to the next level.

  51. LB March 16, 2015

Anyway I have to run kiddies, and remember, in order to avoid sounding like a r*****, or worst, Slay_hive/Prismatic, pick up a book every now and then.

  52. FutureCIARA March 16, 2015

LOUD was my fav era from her, She better get back to the basics! I feel like this album will underperform to no surprise.

  53. Skyfall March 16, 2015

I skip right past the article as I do with most of Scums right ups, Rihanna opinion doesn’t matter the GP does. Diamonds is timeless, We Found Love (song of the decade) is timeless. Rihanna is far from finish #R8 and HOME will slay.

  54. kingbeybitch March 16, 2015

This s*** sounds so familiar isnt this the same thing Beyonce said before releasing g her best album 4 hmmmm. She said she didn’t care about the hits but when 4 sold less than IAM y’all called it a flop. I want to hear what she’s been cooking up but I’m curious to see what her sales will be like and what her Navy will say “IF ” she underperforms.

    • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

Lmao yesss! Roc Nation got her watching and learning. Just like I read one stan saying the other day she doesn’t care about hits this era. Play Déjà Vu.

      • kingbeybitch March 16, 2015

Lmaooo Ikr girl but believe me if this album underperforms she’s going bad to a Loud era

      • kingbeybitch March 16, 2015

Lmaooo Ikr girl but believe me if this album underperforms she’s going back to a Loud era

  55. Tabby March 16, 2015

Everyone knows this besides her delusional fans. Popularity at the time does not equal timeless. Just look at umbrella which is her biggest hit. That song already sounds dated as hell and I rarely hear of anyone covering if or it getting played seriously and it hasn’t even been 10 years.

    • hives scared of R8 March 16, 2015

Umbrella will always be timeless.Just bec

      • hives scared of R8 March 16, 2015

Umbrella is her signature hit! It is timeless.I didnt know a song that is covered a lot is considered timeless.I think the main reason why its not covered often is because Rihanna is the only one that can sing her songs.

  56. hives scared of R8 March 16, 2015

SAM!! Stfu. How is 45s a try hard when its not the typical dance music pushed in mainstream?? Your article is a damn struggle bit ch.I hope you see my comment!!

  57. kingbeybitch March 16, 2015

@How Many Drinks Beyonce has 5 legend awards

    • How Many Drinks March 16, 2015

I only know about the one she shares with Michael Jackson.

      • kingbeybitch March 16, 2015

A legend with DC( World Music Awards) a Billboard Millennium Award, another legend award from the (World Music awards as a solo artist), Mj Vanguard award and one from the (NRJ awards which is in france)

    • coolness March 16, 2015

You forgot that honorary American Music Award Usher presented to her in 2007! I think she was the first female to win it.

  58. Beauty March 16, 2015

Actually, Rihanna just sounded more like a woman who is transitioning from a 20-something young woman into a 30-something woman. Not all the things you did in your twenties you’ll do in your thirties. A lot of her songs are high-energy fare that she probably just doesn’t have the physical (and emotional) stamina to create and sustain on stage for an hours long concert anymore. Also, by her being in the business for so long and experiencing a very public beating and humiliation caused by it, I’m sure she’s actually a lot “older” than her years so it seems plausible that she may want to try something a bit more mature and not so dancy this time around. Whatever she does, I’ll support it. No worries here. And I actually LOVE “FourFiveSeconds”!

  59. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) March 16, 2015

well well WELL! HAhahahaa, the G**** just got a verbal slap in the face after all that bullish*t talk about how Rihanna is so “timeless,” yet your FAV even said she’s tired of those microwave hits lol! The G****’s foundation of beliefs keeps crumbling down….and by your own FAV lol!!

    • Blue Ivy Rod (SlayMaticThinksImSlayriah) March 16, 2015

But she still has more number ones and better record sales than Beyoncé, she can also dress and has acclaim in the fashion world. She is timeless as well as her music. Why don’t you just suck on @Slay_Hive c******* and shut up

      • ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) March 16, 2015

Please rewatch the interview, Rihanna’s tired of her own sh*t lol. #DEAL

      • Blue Ivy Rod (SlayMaticThinksImSlayriah) March 17, 2015

Her opinion cannot change the facts, her sales and impact rivals no other. Timeless music are only timeless if they transcend any era of music. Like thriller, crazy in love or umbrella. Just because you don’t like her music or think she comes out with mcablums, which doesn’t make sense in my opinion, however she has great songs and you need to deal

  60. Rory March 16, 2015

How can Sam say that this rollout is a mess??? She obviously has everything planned. She’s shot videos already for a reason

  61. Mark111 March 16, 2015

It’s normal for an artist to want to move forward and not stay with one sound or just their past work. There’s tons of Beyonce’s song that she don’t perform anymore, mainly off her first album. Same with MJ, Whitney, Prince never perform ANY of his classics, it’s all new music. You can tell what songs she loves and the ones that just hits. She’ll sing Diamonds, Stay, Love The Way You Lie with so much passion, and then she’ll just blow by Only Girl.
    .
So yes, make new music, pick out the many hits and classics you already have and keep it moving. You think Madonna is playing EVERY single she released? No, only the classic and on to the next new song.

  62. Casual-T March 16, 2015

Rihanna is taking herself too seriously. She will never be Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, or Barbra Streisand. Diana Ross still sings Baby Love, Stop in the Name of Love, and Upside Down in her concerts. Donna Summer sang Bad Girls and Last Dance right up until the end. Last time she toured, Janet included Nasty, Escapade, and All for You. Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with a HIT pop song, and on the real, I think Rihanna has some timeless hits — Umbrella, Diamonds, The Monster, and maybe a couple of others.

  63. xedos March 16, 2015

she has lots of timeless songs but the were never release to radio as singles.

  64. xedos March 16, 2015

rated R is timeless to me.

  65. Notafollower March 17, 2015

Yep she’s taking herself to seriously and over thinking girl lol

She picks descent dance pop throw away songs and that’s it i will give her team credit though they pick out pop dance songs they know pop radio will eat up.

  66. RICHIE_RICH March 17, 2015

I respect her realness. To me her best album is Rated R and best Era Loud. I live for miss RiRi no shade !!!!!!!!

She was the only other black chick to last in Beyonce world. Got to give her credit. Not being cocky or anything just being honest.

  67. Anon March 17, 2015

I love how TGJ makes it seem like the album has been delayed numerous times when we’ve never received an official release date. No artist would promote a movie/soundtrack while trying to promote their OWN album at the same time. Both Rihanna’s label and HOME’s movie company know better than to pit both projects against each other as it will affect sales. This is the campaign for HOME. If a new album is coming, it’ll be mid to late this year once the HOME promotion is over.

What happened to this site? You used to be so positive when it came to artists. Now it seems like you throw shade, especially at Rihanna, just to get hits. Not cool.

  68. Delonjo Barber March 17, 2015

If you hate her so much, why don’t you boycott her? If she’s such a terrible artist, why do you give her constant keyboard clicks? If she’s ruining the culture so bad and taking jobs from your better-singing girlfriends, why don’t you just say that?

I know why. It’s because, regardless your daily withering antics, her milkshake still brings all the boys to your yard. She makes you cash. And you hate to love her, baby. And that’s perfectly fine. But let’s just be honest about it. Okay?

  69. robyn March 17, 2015

I must say I’m sooo in love with what she has realesd thiz year, Towards the sun being my fave

  70. (Rihyonce) March 17, 2015
