April Fools Day may be a week away, but it appears some are getting in on the fun early.
Over the course the last decade, Rihanna‘s music has been just as notable as her so-so vocals, pitiful performances, and crass social media antics.
As such, it’s little surprise that many let out a roar of laughter after it was announced today that the 27-year-old is set to be honored for…”inspiring young people.”

The Roc Nation star will receive the Western Hemisphere Entrepreneurial Award specifically for “her inspiration to young people across the Americas”.
RiRi will be presented with the tribute at the Summit of the Americas in Panama next month. There, Barack Obama and other leaders in North America, the Caribbean and Latin America, including Barbados’ Freundel Stuart, will discuss the region’s pressing economic and social challenges.
The award is being given by the Young Americas Business Trust, an arm of the Organisation of American States which is arranging the summit.
Speaking on their surprising selection, The Trust said:
“[We have ]selected Rihanna for this prestigious award because of her highly successful track record in music, her ability to remain at the top of her profession for so many years and because of the example she sets as an artiste and businesswomen”. {Source}
Kudos where it’s due – it’s a good look. Especially with a new album on the horizon.
However, we can’t be the only ones side-eyeing the logic (or lack-thereof) being demonstrated here.
Rihanna’s record of hits are undeniable, yet there really is something to be said for honoring someone for “remaining on top of their profession” when so much of that is tied to antics that a) have little do with actual talent and b) have been slammed for being detrimental to youth.
