From The Vault: Keyshia Cole – ‘I Changed My Mind’

Published: Sunday 9th Aug 2015 by Joe

Keyshia Cole’s debut single is this week’s From The Vault selection. ‘I Changed My Mind’ serves as today’s pick.

Produced by then-man of the hour Kanye West and written by Cole alongside John Legend, ‘Mind’ sees the songbird take back her love from an unfaithful companion. As it was customary at that stage of his career, West relied heavily on the use of samples, in this case a Dr Dre selection which itself uses a portion of Solomon Burke’s ‘Get Out Of My Life’.

The launching single off the singer’s ‘The Way It Is’ album, ‘Mind’ sadly didn’t set the charts alight in similar fashion to other material such ‘Last Night’ or ‘Let It Go’ and had to settle for a peak position of #71 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Benny Boom took charge of bringing the song to visual life and delivered a video that saw the chanteuse parade around her block as well as confronting her cheating boyfriend after finding out about his infidelity. Mr West can be seen in the clip alongside Cole.

Artists such as Keyshia are very rare in this day and age; she’s an artist who doesn’t compromise her sound and brings much needed grit to the R&B genre.

And while her recent releases haven’t rouses the masses, we hope the songbird hasn’t gotten to that point of no return where the masses start singing back to her “I changed my mind, I don’t love you no more “.

While only time will tell whether Ms. Cole can make a successful comeback, we’ll keep rooting for her – as she’s an undeniable talent.

This is one of my favourite songs from her. Her first two albums were the best in her discography, the third was ok but it was the beginning of her decline.

I still listen to Just Like You. I don’t skip any tracks…truly a gem!

People can say whatever they want about Keyshia, but she slayed from 2005-2010. Three platinum albums and one gold. Many artists cannot say the same….

Keyshia has always set herself apart from the other artists. It’s that raw FEEL and emotion that she exudes which is why her music has always gained attention to her r&b/soul audience. She has #1 singles (7) and sold platimnum albums. I’ve been a fan since the beginning and I’m hoping that this new album which will be her seventh will showcase growth and evolution.

People like to throw shade and come at her but to be honest she’s one of the best that has came out in the trend of r&b. I think she should get back to the basics and revamp because she has that it factor. I feel like this next album will get her back on track. I’m rooting for you Keyshia!!!

Signature Keyshia. I fell in love with her when this song dropped and again a couple years ago when I put it back in rotation. She lost me a little bit after “Just Like You” but I have to disagree with the masses, as “Point of No Return” was a true Keyshia Cole classic. I’M STILL checking for you Keyshia, I just need some heat like this here. And some more Heaven Sent.

I loved this song the first time I heard it in 2004. I was instantly hooked! Great song! “Kanye West on the track” lol.

  6. That’s … Hot August 9, 2015

I was really into her music back in the day, her first 3 LPs were some of the best in the R&B field. Her albums were so solid, her catalogue was consistent, she delivered each time. But, damn, then she really lost her way and I’ve lost my interest … her most recent album was unlistenable. Really hope she’ll make a comeback, but I have my doubts.

Somebody believed in her either Kanye west or the record label! I remember this song being out for 6 months before people catching on to her.. I just listen to this album today and yesterday..

My gay anthem for love in this crazy lifestyle is and forever will be “We could Be” of this album.

The Way It Is is a modern-day classic. sometimes charts don’t mean ish cause this song ‘flopped’ yet everyone remembers it and a lot of Keyshia’s later stuff might have had better chart success but itsn’t as remarkable as this song.

Keyshia Cole is without a doubt a very s*** songstress, but it appears she will be putting her sexuality on the back burner for a while, as she recently took a vow of celibacy. Get the Latest Urban News, Interviews and Videos from VladTV Daily!
