New Song: Tamar Braxton – ‘Catfish’

Tamar Braxton is back with an ironically titled new single – ‘Catfish.’

The track’s arrival falls on the day its parent album ‘Calling All Lovers’ was supposed to be released; a fact which is sure to raise eyebrows.

Nonetheless, the singer, reality star, and TV host is pressing on with the roll-out of the catchy cut, which precedes the LP (now due October 2nd).

Though a mid-tempo, the song marks a departure of sorts from the ballad-driven sound of previous efforts ‘Let Me Know’ and ‘If I Don’t Have You.’

Take a listen below…

Authentically refreshing.

Naturally, the track’s title paired with Tamar’s trademark shenanigans, suggests a ratchet-flavoured number awaits. However, in its place, is a breezy, contemporary, and altogether alluring song that doesn’t sound like anything presently on Urban radio – a great trait given the monotony that is today’s “turn up” climate.

After the dud that was ‘If I Don’t Have You,’ this has us amped for Ms. Braxton’s album again.

Hot.

Hmmmmm…. She has such a great voice but her material is always lacking.

    • toohotfortv September 10, 2015

Its tc… he’s a great singer but, only an average songwriter and bc hes such a great singer, artist are very easily “fooled” into thinking the complete songs are good. Its only bc he’ll sing the hell out of a demo and gas the performers into thinking they’ve got a hit. Smoke and mirrors.

      • music85 September 11, 2015

That explains it. I knew it was something but I couldn’t quite put my finger it.

      • toohotfortv September 11, 2015

and can i just say, that “don flex” part could stand to be stacked and stereo-ed (at least on the 2nd hook out). I understand what they’re doing here though. they’re going for lowest common denominator appeal. sometimes you have to dumb it down. and with that in mind, it’s a somewhat smart move strategically. also, i actually enjoy tamars voice in this subtle place.

Is this her new single? Tell her to keep it.
It doesn’t sound “single worthy” but I feel it’ll be one of those tracks on an album that will set the tone well without being released as a single.

    7/10 for me.

    • CherylSoldierr September 10, 2015

      Oop

    • A&R September 11, 2015

  3. Tamartian Stan! K. Michelle who? I don’t know her! September 10, 2015

Yes, Tamar! Sis, et it and work that ponytail for the gods, honey! I wan’t that hot sugar. I want a piece of something sweet all night. I can’t wait until this album is released. The cover alone slayed me all the way to ICU in the nearest hospital.

Sidenote: Congrats to Toni for going platinum in the U.S. again after all these years. It just goes to show that when you stick to your formula, you can’t lose and you’ll always have fans.

  4. J-Mar September 10, 2015

This is Garbage Worse Tamar Single I Ever Heard. Not Even Single Worthy Sounds Like A Fill In For The Album.

  5. DanYiel Iman September 10, 2015

  9. BGKC ???????? September 10, 2015

TGJ is so backwards, like…wyd? How do y’all call ‘IIDHY’ a dud and this song a bop?

This track is the definition of a filler on an album and NOT single-worthy. It doesn’t even have a BRIDGE.

    It’s a chop for me.

    • slaysurfavs September 10, 2015

Like they fail to realize her singles let Me know & iidhy have both went top 10 on urban ac! Pretty good for an r&b artist

  10. Stephy. September 10, 2015

#random…. I know it’s a lost cause like fetch, however, I’m still waiting on her to give Let Me Know the promotion it deserved. Now that was a hot song. Yesssss I feel it, like you feel it. ????????????????

    • Crazy September 10, 2015

Looooool I still rock that until this day…it’s my ring tone, notication sound etc…it just makes me want to roll all over in my bed lol

    • Navy Gravy September 10, 2015

I can actually shake My a** to this and that makes me love it even more

  14. First timer September 10, 2015

I like the beat. I don’t care for the lyrics. I think she can do better.

  15. Crazy September 10, 2015

I love it…it gives me this 90s vibe n I can relate to what she says…nice Tamar plus I can bump this into my car..I feel like this album going be throwback vibe

  16. Rated R September 10, 2015

While although not striking as a Single-worthy song , this song is smart because of the feeling you get while listening to it . Picture yourself in your car and this song comes on, the first thing you hear is the beat an infectious 90’s beat with the lines ” baby I know the real you” and ” don’t flex” being said over and over again. By then end of the send you might want to reply because of the beat . The lyrics repitition are a play on radio trends but doesn’t come off as generic . Thinking in the scheme of other songs this choice right makes sense now if we were in the middle of summer maybe not but we are transitioning to fall so it’s content makes use of the moment . I think the song is a grower it’s not a traditional Tamar in your face vocal performance, I believe the song will be sold to people once paired with a video that matches the urban-esque feeling of the song. Just my opinion

  17. Geo September 10, 2015

I like the lyrics, but the track/production doesn’t fit! It too much ???? an I love all of Tamar music

  18. StrawberryMuffin24 September 10, 2015

I like it cause it’s so Tamar I’m feeling this song and Let me know but she didn’t even put that on the album wtf?!

    • toohotfortv September 10, 2015

Yeah, I didn’t love “let me know” but its odd for it to not be on the album.

  19. #JACKIE September 10, 2015

    This sucks.

  20. LB September 10, 2015

Pretty repetitive, I liked it but then it got annoying.

  21. Eddie September 10, 2015

    “Authentically refreshing”‘?

She sings, “Baby I know the real you” more times than I can count. Over and over and over again.

    Try: “Ridiculously repetitive.”

    • toohotfortv September 10, 2015

I guess she really really really really really really really really really really knows the real him. Smh

  22. RihYonce September 10, 2015

I like the beat but she lost me with the content, but I don’t like how the faded the beat out , it could’ve been a decent song

  23. Only1Voice September 10, 2015

This album will be the only album Everrrrrrr to flop faster than both C-Error’s Jackie and Mariah’s Me… I Sound A Mess albums… TaMAN has released 3 back to back foolish ass single, and then had the audacity to release her album the same day as the years most anticipated album Janet’s Unbreakable… Lord, I see why Toni fired Vince, he has no idea how to market an R&B artist… Yuck, this song sucks hard #%¿¥…

    • MUSICHEAD September 10, 2015

      “Me…I Sound A Mess”? Lmaoooo

  24. Theman September 10, 2015

It’s a nice track. The retro sound is awesome.

  25. Chile, leave my weave at the door and don’t steal it like those broke ass barb stans September 10, 2015

Lol! Go in, Tamar, sis! Damn, she said he didnt have any gas money or a pot to p*** in. Kii! And on top of that, his broke ass in flexin in front of folks like he has it all and flopping around town like a foolish ass catfish. She better go in and expose his tea!

On the other hand, I hope this isnt her next single because I’m not sure I can see her performing it and it being successful on any charts. She should pick another song.

  26. MUSICHEAD September 10, 2015

I have been playing “Let Me Know” everyday this week. Tamar’s voice is stunning. But this new song she just released is gon get her dropped from her record label, lease, uber account, credit card company, frequent flyer account, email and anything else she has ever signed up for. This song simply sucks and will be the end of this album. Que the remix please!

  27. What now September 10, 2015

It’s kind of cute, but I would never listen to it on repeat. I did like Let Me Know & even thought If I Don’t Have You was a nice retro throwback tune. I now how curiosity n the album, so I’ll preview it on iTunes and decide from there. I c u Tariah.

  28. cocobutta September 10, 2015

The Catfishing-ish concept is a cool one but the “Don’t Flex” started to jar me.

Think the second verse should have had same formula as 1st verse structure just so had less of that Don’t Flex bit as its so prominent throughout rest of the track.

Beat is excellent the vocals are sweet on verse imo.

I get it overall she wants us to all be on to our fronting friends and lovers saying “Don’t Flex” cus “baby! I know THE REAL you”

  29. A&R September 11, 2015

Oddly, I love the track and production… Its the content. The lyrics and song’s lyrical structure is off. Tamar sounds hella good and approach is freaking on pernt. Damn, she got shorted on this one. This woman. Is really a vocalist and just reminded how much actually singing well helps when recording. Who wrote this?! Smh damn, they messed her over. That’s wrong, man.

  31. JT September 11, 2015

Tamar… wyd? And where is “let me know” on your album?

  32. Danny Bey September 11, 2015

Now before the bandwagon Janet stans come for me, let me just say that I stan for Janet as well. But I have to be honest, how do yall call this song an “album filler” and boring, but praised the f*** outta “No Sleeep”?? They’re essentially the same vibe. Nonetheless, I like
This song. Gives me 90s teas.

    • MUSICHEAD September 11, 2015

Same vibe, different content. No one is saying this song’s vibe is bad. It’s the content that’s the problem. No Sleeep is far more superior than this Catfish mess. And why is it even called Catfish? The lyrics aren’t even related to the meaning of the word.

      • Danny Bey September 11, 2015

It’s obviously a metaphor. The song is about her partner acting out not being himself in regards to their relationship. Hence, the term “Catfish”, someone pretending to be someone that they’re not. Don’t know how that could be so easily missed when it’s an obvious interpretation. Which is actually what makes the song interesting. But I digress.

      • Danny Bey September 11, 2015

And if you ask me, the content of No Sleeep is more bland and basic than Catfish. “I miss you and when I see you we’re gonna f*** all night” versus “Stop acting like youre not person I didn’t fall in love with in the first place”…..

  33. ~The Arcade~ September 11, 2015

I was cracking up when she was singing the “don’t flex” bit lol. But I like the song, and agree with Sam its different from ‘urban tunes’ these days… its very Tamar.

  34. mr.m September 11, 2015

    HOT!!! so smoothy and catchy
These new generation comments are disgusting!
The song is a TONE .. Would like it more with some killer vocals like “all the way home” ..
    anywho go Tamar!!

  35. IcyOne September 11, 2015

Shouldn’t these idiot 2nd term Bush babies be back in school now? This is superior to like every song currently out and is the way music SHOULD sound. Well done Tamar.

  36. Tamartian baby September 12, 2015

No SHADE but this song REALLY is not good! I’m not sure what Vince & Tamar are doing but I def expected to her a true R&B smash single for her 2nd release especially if anyone is trying to bring back R&B. This “catfish” is not catchy at all. I’m disappointed.????????????????

  37. Tay Tay February 12, 2016

Even thought this song is subpar at best, the funny part is WHO she is referring to and how (partially) true these lyrics are. But what’s even funnier is how she’s failing to admit how lame she was when she was with him. No Shade, Just Facts.

PS….before all you Tamartians try to drag me for this, I Actually like most of the music she puts out and dvr all of her reality TV moments. Even though she’d spit in my face if she could. #whyuSTILLmadoveraDECADElaterthoboo
