Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 2005 #FBF

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week, we’ll run back a decade and get our krump on to Grammy winning R&B bad boy Chris Brown‘s inaugural hit ‘Run It.’  Bursting onto the scene in late 2005, the club banger – produced by Scott Storch & Sean Garrett – introduced the music scene to a promising stageblazer from Virginia. Quickly drawing comparisons to the likes of a young Michael Jackson, Brown’s smooth footwork and hot bop glided him straight to the top of the Hot 100 for a five week stay (his longest to date).

This week in 2005 would see the last of its tenure before a brief dethronement by Billboard queen Mariah Carey.  Tuck in below to see what other familiar names you see in the top 20 this week 10 years ago:

Mariah is Timeless . Blank .

  2. Mariah The Legend December 25, 2015

MARIAH IS QUEEN. AN ICON. A LEGEND. MANY PEOPLE CAN ATTEST TO THIS INCLUDING THE MEDIA and artist who she inspired to sing like Beyonce. She a true queen unlike Beyonce whos called an iconic only by her delusional flop stans. kiiiii. I CAINT!!!

    • Tyler Makiavelli December 25, 2015

Still carrying the weight of that L on your line backer ass shoulders huh? Like fan, like fave lol

  3. Mariah The Legend December 25, 2015

    chris was cute

  4. JOHNVIDAL December 25, 2015

Mariah always slaying left right and centre.
That hot 100 list from 2005 wasn´t that good already though. Music started its decline around 1999-2000. The best things in that top are preobably Mariah and Madonna and neither were at there primes or anything.
Only good thing about the current list is Adele. The Justin beiber thing is devastating. Thanks Adele for blocking him so many weeks.

    • #JACKIE December 25, 2015

      Please stfu your annoying sis.

    • Cough Cough December 25, 2015

Check on it, by Beyonce is way better than That Madonna yoga song. Stop it.

      • OMG Logic!!! December 25, 2015

That “yoga” song samples a timeless song by ABBA. Timeless. A word Thighyonce will never see attached to her stripper thot music.

      • JOHNVIDAL December 26, 2015

Sorry but no. That album was Madonna´s last amazing album and is pretty much a masterpiece for dance music. Check on It is the usual Bey and others sound of the mid 00s. Old already.

  5. Tyler Makiavelli December 25, 2015

He had so much potential SMDH. The lighter the berry, the dumber the juice!

    • S****** Blonde December 25, 2015

      • S****** Blonde December 25, 2015

      • Tyler Makiavelli December 25, 2015

        And…
Quite frankly , I don’t give af Blondie

      • King Mark111 /.\ December 25, 2015

        Oop! Got em!

  6. King Gemini December 25, 2015

Wow I actually didn’t know Chris had a number 1 before I think his albums are underrated especially fortune, that was a timeless album. He’s a true artist and although his vocals while perking aren’t always up to par Chris brown actually sings very well. Does he have any more number 1 singles ?

    • Tyler Makiavelli December 25, 2015

      I think he’s had multiple but idk…

    • King Mark111 /.\ December 25, 2015

Chris Brown couldn’t sing after his balls dropped. Male Britney Spears. Mariah’s Studio vocals son.

      • Cough Cough December 25, 2015

Don’t forget Chris: Rihanna’s resident fist, as well.

    • Danny Bey December 26, 2015

Only two: “Run It” & “Kiss Kiss” f/ T-Pain

  7. King Gemini December 25, 2015

I can see that people don’t like Beyonce here but honestly, sales only aside her cultural impact not just on pop music but popular culture in itself can not be denied. I honestly just don’t get you people here spread so much hate. Always with your personal opinions and think that the only thing that matters is sales. Sales do not equate to your star power or relevance at all.

    • blue December 25, 2015

beyonce gets hate on here, but i believe she is also one of the most beloved on this site… Also this is about chris brown not bey

    • Memz December 26, 2015

      Elaborate on her impact.

    • JOHNVIDAL December 26, 2015

How was Beyonce specially hated here in this post? Madonna got more hate than her in this post and only because I mentioned how great that album of hers was.
It´s nobodies fault than when we revisit charts Beyonce´s catalogue doesn´t shine compared to some others. Don´t worry, she´s better than Chris Brown definitely LOL

  8. MUSICHEAD December 25, 2015

Mariah had a stellar 2005! The Emancipation of Mimi was the top selling album of the year and earned her 3 Grammys. One of the greatest comebacks of all time! I can play that entire album and not skip a track.

    • JOHNVIDAL December 26, 2015

It actually is the greatest comeback ever.

  9. King Mark111 /.\ December 25, 2015

There were only 6 White acts in the top 20. lol Laffy Tafy was the beginning of the end of Hip Hop. And for some reason, R&B would follow the trend.
    .
Chris Brown was being called the next Usher, not MJ. This was frist after the Confession Massacre. His first and Kiss Kiss would be his LAST #1. Rihanna blocked him so many times in 2008 for that top spot, lol.

    • S****** Blonde December 25, 2015

      You’re obsessed with white people.

  10. King Mark111 /.\ December 25, 2015

The ATL sound (as you can see on this chart) was IN in 2003 to 2006, hint why Ciara ever had a chance, Mariah CLINGED (as she always do) to JD’s D. She would later cling to The Dream, Nicki, Gucci Main, and Rick Ross, fail and try to return with JD and fail at that as well. Let’s not act like it was Mariah and her old @ss 90’s clings made her comeback. Bow Wow even had hits with JD at this time, so don’t.

    • Cough Cough December 25, 2015

Girl shut up. Mariah works with who she works with because she likes to experiment with different people and see what the outlook is when she puts her input with another persons. Unlike your fav who does nothing but have things handed to her and prepackaged, which is evident now that she’s trying to actually be apart of her music and its tragically delayed, uninteresting nowhere to be found on the release list. You stay critiquing with a talentless b**** in your shrine.

    • OMG Logic!!! December 25, 2015

No no sweety. People cling to Mariah. A Goddess clings to no one but herself. I know you’ll never know the feeling of that because you stan for the most basic of trash.

  11. credits December 25, 2015

Awe look at chris when he was young and healthy…in other things, Canadians are taking over billboard!!

  12. Arianator Barb December 25, 2015

Soul survivor and Stay Fly are my SHIIIITT!!! I love me three 6 and Jeezy.

  13. S****** Blonde December 25, 2015

Terrible top 20, the only good songs are those from Mariah, Madonna, Eminem and Sean Paul, the rest are mediocre and forgettable.

    • OMG Logic!!! December 25, 2015

So many racist Blacks on here that hate on you purely because you’re White. Hypocrites.

      • Danzou December 25, 2015

So many racist whites shooting up churches purely because they’re black owned. hypocrites.

    • JOHNVIDAL December 26, 2015

Very similar to what I said. These people refuse to understand that the 00s decade was already weak compared to 80s and 90s.

  14. Lake Erie December 25, 2015

Chris Brown!!! I liked Breezy at this time but i became a fan for his album “Exclusive”. That album is “Timeless”. I still play it sometimes today. Every now and then I wonder would he and his career have a different result at this point, had that incident not happended. That really didnt shun me away that much, it was is evolution to redundently talk about s** and portray to be “hood” thats cringing. But nonetheless, he’s put out alot of fire ive loved.

    .
SIDENOTE: Dumbest comment/post to CLING this site for profound approvement. If that’s the case, then Aaliyah clinged, and Rihannas career WAS and STILL is a CLING and current hangingly on a thread.

  15. Danzou December 25, 2015

Are we really gonna ignore the fact that white people are white washing the industry? Lol there’s a reason TGJ does these rewinds. The only people who act like they don’t know what’s going on is white people. I mean c’mon just look at that top twenty compared to ONLY ten years ago? It’s b*******. I personally don’t support white artists. Because if Latin people can have a “Latin Grammy awards” then why should black people allow white people to get Grammys in OUR culture? Why should I support white artists but black artists have to accept not being played on top 40? I mean seriously when did it become ok for top 40 to ignore R&B/soul music? Why aren’t black EDM artists being marketed? Wtf?

    • Barb-wire December 25, 2015

      ^^^ This!

    • S****** Blonde December 25, 2015

Latin people are not an homogenous group, that’s why they can have their own Grammys, besides, their music and language are different.

      • Danzou December 25, 2015

That’s not the point you idiot. If Latin people deserve to have their own industry(which they do) then white people need to exit out of our industry as well. Barry gordy created our industry so we could sing about what we were going through(racism, discrimination, oppression, etc). Not a white man. But sure enough once Motown was created, white people saw an opportunity to take something that wasn’t theirs like they do with everything. White artists were performing in states that didn’t allow black performers to perform and that’s where the white washing started. White people were traveling America pretending to create sounds that came from Motown. Elvis for example was the most successful one. He stole Chuck berry style and was considered the king of rock and roll.

      • OMG Logic!!! December 25, 2015

You’re trying to argue with someone with an IQ of around room temperature. Don’t bother Blondie.

    • OMG Logic!!! December 25, 2015

Maybe Caucasians should have their own version of the BET Awards or the Soul Train Awards? Oh wait, ya’ll would 5hit up a storm if they dared so much as think of such a thing. Racist f ucking hypocrites is what all of you are.

      • Danzou December 25, 2015

They do have their own version. It’s called mtv you ignorant b.itch. Michael Jackson was the first black artist to make their rotation. Or did you forget? No one is being racist, there’s no such thing as racism towards white people. You’re not oppressed in any way. Stop replying to my comments without doing your research. If you don’t have any receipts then stop trying to exchange information with me. I will read you every time.

  16. KingMe December 25, 2015

I miss this era of music!!!! every genre had quality hits that even in this day sound better then what’s out now. No one was afraid to go left & experiment instead of chasing the same sound.

    • JOHNVIDAL December 26, 2015

Every genre? No, in 2005 there was a lack of diversity already.

  17. Meteorite December 25, 2015

Goodness time flies!!!! I was a freshman in high school when those songs were blaring out my headphones!!!! That was the beginning of the end for music sadly.

  18. HailBeysus December 25, 2015

I see the Queen slowly creeping up to snatch that #1 spot for 5 consecutive weeks with Check On It YAASSSS!!!

  19. @JanetCIARA_ December 26, 2015

Dont even understand how that twink has not 2 but 3 lazy singles in the top 5… The market is so different and its sad

  20. Chile, leave my weave at the door and don’t steal it like those broke ass barb stans December 26, 2015

OMG! “I’m Sprung” was and still is EVERYTHING GLORIOUS AND JOYFUL! Honestly, it should’ve been T-Pain’s first Hot 100 #1 because HE TOLD THE TRUTH in the lyrics and that song is Grammy worthy, in my opinion. Some women out here REALLY DO have some men going crazy with that voodoo kitty cat they’re serving up these men.

  21. another taken day something ain’t wrong December 26, 2015
