Brandy Sues Record Label For Trying To Force Her To Sign “Terrible Deal”

Wonder why it’s been four years since Brandy last released an album?

Sure, there’s been TV shows, Broadway, and more, however there’s another reason; one that the Vocal Bible has been silent about…until now.

Per a shocking new report, the R&B veteran has been at loggerheads with her former label.

The tangled web is now so volatile that she effectively has been rendered unable to release new music — unless inking a new deal.

Via Court House News:

LOS ANGELES (CN) – Pop singer Brandy sued her record label for $1 million Tuesday, claiming it refuses to let her record or release an album, to “bully” her into signing a contract that will let Chameleon Entertainment double dip at her expense.

Brandy Norwood sued New York-based Chameleon Entertainment and its owner-CEO Breyon Prescott in Superior Court.

She claims Prescott, who also works for Epic Records, is trying to double dip: force her to sign with Epic and release her records through Chameleon, so he can profit twice.

She demands $1 million in compensatory damages, plus punitive damages, for intentional interference with contract, interference with business relations, and business law violations.

Norwood, 37, claims that Chameleon is contractually obligated to record and release her albums but refuses to do so unless she signs a “terrible deal.”

She says Prescott is doing this in “a blatantly unlawful attempt to bully Norwood into signing a new recording and distribution agreement containing terms far worse than her current agreement. Defendants have made clear through their actions and words that, unless Norwood capitulates and signs this terrible deal, she will remain ‘trapped’ with a label that won’t let her record or release music.”

Represented by Allen Grodsky, Norwood says Prescott’s “outrageous actions are based on nothing more than greed.”

“Prescott owns and operates defendant Chameleon and is employed full time by Epic Records and head of urban A&R,” the complaint states. “The new recording and distribution deal that he is trying to force Norwood to sign is with Epic, which allows him to ‘double dip’: if Prescott can force Norwood to sign the new deal, he will profit both as an owner of Chameleon and through bonuses and other benefits he will get from Epic.”

Given this “despicable conduct,” she says in the complaint, she has “every right to terminate, and has now terminated, her recording contract with defendants.”

In the most literal sense of the word…wow.

Suddenly the delays, evasiveness, and the murmurs we’ve been hearing all make sense.

Sigh.

In any case, B-Rocka is one of modern R&B’s most enduring talents. As such, we hope there is a speedy resolve; one that will bring that long-awaited LP to fruition.

  2. MUSICHEAD March 30, 2016

I’m so glad Brandy is FINALLY putting her foot down. People don’t realize it but Brandy was never dropped from RCA, she was forced to leave when Breyon took a job at Epic forcing everyone signed to his imprint to leave for Epic as well. Breyon mishandled Two Eleven as well as Jamie Foxx’s last album. Brandy deserves better! #FreeBrandy

    • AJ March 31, 2016

Wasn’t Brandy also formerly married or engaged to Bryan Prescott? No wonder she wanted out…

      • Yo mama March 31, 2016

No, her ex fiance’s name is Ryan Pres…(something). Lol not the same person.

These damn 360 deals, y’all see what happened to JoJo. Smh, ready YOUR CONTRACTS. She’s too talented for this drama

  4. MUSICHEAD March 30, 2016

Starz please be patient with Brandy. Yes, Beggin & Pleadin was released on Slayana records but Breyon and Epic is why there’s no video and no radio adds. Let’s hope they’re willing to settle sooner rather than later.

    • Royalkev March 30, 2016

I know, I heard that B&P was already shot with such a slayful concept! I’ve been waiting around hoping that this video sees the light of day. Now I see why there’s a delay. I still hope it happens down the line. Better late than never!

  5. IG : @mixedboy March 30, 2016

Poor Brandy. R&B Royalty! These money hungry labels are a mess.

  6. Fred March 30, 2016

Someone mentioned about a 360 deal. There’s honestly NOTHING wrong with a 360 deal. A traditional deal can be shady just like any deal can. ALWAYS read your contracts and have an ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER read it as well. I have a 360 deal with my artists and they don’t have ANY problems whatsoever. They had their own entertainment lawyers look it over. We negotiated on what was what and I made sure they were getting a really great deal. Integrity is a must in business. It’s too bad that Brandy had to go through this.

    • Teflon Boy March 30, 2016

Hi Fred, what’s the name of your company/label?

  7. Coolness March 30, 2016

Damn, this is sad to hear ?. Beggin’ and Pleadin’ was released early this year and almost four months later, it’s almost like it never happened. The business side music can be so shady.

  8. FC/JC March 30, 2016

Wow, so much greed….. cant trust these record labels and management.
Which way do you go at this point?
I hope she wins her lawsuit!

  9. CodeRed March 30, 2016

How did Brandys last 5 flop albums do on the charts????

      • Danzou March 30, 2016

Lol brandy albums have been top ten her whole career. Two eleven sold just over 150000. Put it down went platinum. So shut up.

    • Real..Just.Real March 30, 2016

How is she expected to sell without a supportive label that select the tracks and have the overall say?

  10. Kemar (@S_C_Jr on Twitter) March 30, 2016

I hope it all works out Brandy. I was wondering what was taking so long for new music. I hate when artists get taken advantage of. That’s why I’m starting law school in the fall so I can practice entertainment law. Enough of these greedy companies! Dragggg him/Chameleon, Brandy!

  11. Smoove Jones March 30, 2016

She’ll be fine. She actually already filmed a video for B&P it should be release any day now. She’ll be performing at BET’S Black Girls Rock too.

  12. ASipOfBrandy March 30, 2016

Brandy better do like Beyonce and Ashanti and start her own label. These major labels ain’t s*** that why I’m staying independent! C’mon Top Billing Entertainment, llc

  13. Localica AKA HOEnica BKA Monica March 30, 2016

Brandy Will Be Fine. Her Bank Account Is Healthy. She’s Only Suing So That She Can Release Music. It’s Actually The Same Situation Lil Kim Was In A While back.

    • cocobutta March 30, 2016

The only local thing around here is your moms box, when she chose a local s**** doner to birth u with. Then you have the nerve to have that avi like Bey is not the best to do it on stage these last 5-10 years. DISRESPECTFUL!

How about coming off your neighbours wifi and slip back to the crack house u belong in u tired fish lip ashy heifer.

      • Localica AKA HOEnica BKA Monica March 30, 2016

Oh yeah…. I forgot, FLOPica SKA noMONEYca!

    • Get up March 30, 2016

If Monica’s broke, what is Brandy.

      Monica’s net worth= 15M
      Brandy’s net worth= 12M

So at the end of the day, they’re both worth more than you and your family combined.

Fyi, didn’t Sam expose you a couple of months back “BeyRihLiyah/ Ok”. Trolling bum b****.

  14. ???Chile, take this “Itty Bitty Piggy” to the market and make sure you hold her hand while crossing the street!??? March 30, 2016

I hope she pulls through out of this. I wanna see her win because she’s too much of a Veteran in the industry to be going through this mess. Hopefully, she’ll be in the clear cause I need her to deliver another “Slower”, “Put it Down” and “Focus”.

    • Real..Just.Real March 30, 2016

Yes for the slower and focus part.. but most importantly shes already a winner

  15. cocobutta March 30, 2016

I actually thought she was with RCA still.
Such a shame but glad she wise to what was trying to go down from label thief Precotts (with an s).

To my true Monica fans (who don’t just pop out the wood tombstones with their crusty non avi’s) let’s support Bran and champion justice. I hope she get more than that milli.

R&B needs a lot of JUSTICE period with these non singers junk fooding my charts with diddy bops auto tuned for the gods while we have true vocalist left like side pieces by non productive labels.

Darling I want KFC not Morleys (my London peeps know what I mean)

  16. Royalkev March 30, 2016

This is why I can’t stand labels anymore! Coin up(at their expense) B-rocka and do your next music venture independently from this point on! These labels are doing the most and they expect veteran acts to lay down like doormats so that they can walk it out all over them! I’m sure they forgot that Miss Sonja Norwood is Bran’s second pair of eyes overlooking the small print. I really hope Brandy can teach these bullies a lesson by funding her next project on their dime!

I am disappointed that this probably means no new music for a while, but I’m a true fan and I’d rather wait until Bran is satisfied with everything on the business end. Brandy’s a lover, not a fighter, but I’m glad she’s not settling for less!

  17. Queen Of Sheba March 30, 2016

    Who?

    • You know you’re thinking it March 30, 2016

You don’t know Brandy? She’s a 90’s has been artist with no musical impact who’s career lasted 4 yrs. Her last 4 albums flopped, leaving her to sing in empty stadiums, and on Subways. I forgot, in the middle of all this, she killed an innocent woman and got away with murder.

  18. ♊Mølly♊ March 30, 2016

    Idk ha

Sad to hear about this for the Starz who have been waiting on a new album from Bran. Hopefully this can be settled very soon.

Does this mean we’re about to have another “Toni Braxton bioptic” on lifetime ?..

  23. ka March 30, 2016

brandy know the biz.shes not a newbie to the game.Has seen and heard it all, so she can see what game is being played and not falling for it just for a hit album/single. Go Brandy he’s acting like your new to the game and a helpless female.

  24. Rihboy March 30, 2016

One of my top 3. Favorite song: when you touch me. The vocal bible needs to paid higher than plenty of these artist at the top now. Including my own fave. Better, quality r&b music. She can do any genre as well. I never understood why she wasn’t at the top. Now I understand . They pretty much taking advantage of her. When you have some of these contracts you have to do triple the work to see anything for yourself. I’m so glad rih owns her masters, and has branded herself in several industries. Because the music industry seems to just leech off of their artist.

    • cocobutta March 30, 2016

Wish i could hold you, just for a little whileeee, let meeee, I…

Yes yes loving the taste and choice of song. #Justice4Brandy

  25. What Now March 30, 2016

Why are record companies so f****** shady?

  26. king March 30, 2016

As long as she been in the business. She should own her own label by now

  27. Kitty Puurrzz March 30, 2016

    It’s a Beyonce/Rihanna world & if Trandy thinks she’s getting her spot back she’s highly mistaken…

    • Joë Moon March 31, 2016

Guess that means your faves have no spot. That read wrote itself. Don’t do this for a living.

  28. ka March 31, 2016

Brandy and Monica first album are classic 90’s young R&B

  29. Tran anti no honey love time but it okay girl March 31, 2016
