As we reported here, ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ rapper Kendrick Lamar was set to take flight to the top of album charts with his latest set ‘untitled unmastered.’

Appropriately named for its tracklist, which is comprised mostly of demos left on the cutting room floor of ‘Butterfly’ and other recorded ventures, the surprise project was predicted to hit #1 on the wings of 175,000-185,000 downloaded.

Already topping charts ahead of its physical version hitting store shelves and digital retailers on March 11th, see how close Lamar landed to the previously mentioned industry analyst forecast:

First Week Sales:  178,000

Via Billboard:

Kendrick Lamar’s surprise Untitled Unmastered project debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, earning 178,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 10, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 142,000 were in pure album sales.

With this accomplishment, Lamar becomes the third act this year (following Future and Drake) to have two #1 albums in a 365 day time frame.

Congratulations!

    Well, congratulations Big Bro. 😉

    .

The freestyle jazz and funk instrumentation on some of the songs is incredible and you’re absolutely otherworldly lyrically speaking – it’s a record full of spontaneity and I suppose that’s why I’ve enjoyed listening to it so much.

    .

The GRAMMY committee better grant you your third “AOTY” nomination (and possible win) next year. #IAin’tPlaying.

Its a compilation disc, it won’t be included in the aoty nominations

      • YOUR MADGEsty March 14, 2016

Yes it is. It is a compilation album complete with unreleased songs thus it is certainly still an ‘album’ in the traditional sense. Furthermore, EP’s and Mixtapes (consisting of seven or more songs) are also considered album’s and are eligible for album nominations, in whatever category depending on the albums genre, at the GRAMMY’s.

        .

P.S: Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster” was an EP; an extended play of songs recorded for “The Fame”, and it was nominated for ‘AOTY’.
