From The Vault: Christina Milian – ‘AM To PM’

Published: Sunday 5th Jun 2016 by Joe

Christina Milian‘s debut single ‘AM To PM’ serves as this week’s From The Vault pick. Join us as we journey back in time to when the beauty was one of her generation’s most promising up-and-comers.

Produced by Swedish maestros Bloodshy & Avant and written by the then-19 year old in 2001, it was the first taste of her self-titled debut.

With its Pop-Urban flavor, it introduced the masses to the singer “Christina Milian” as opposed to the MTV VJ. It reached the 27th spot of the Hot 100 in the US and #3 in the UK.

‘AM’s visual was helmed by director extraordinaire Dave Meyers and featured Milian scheming her way out from the family home to go party with her friends. Honing in on the era’s near necessity for “performance,” the clip boasted synchronised choreography and a dynamite dance-break too. All very early 00s.

Granted the whole affair was coated in dollops of Disney realness, it made for wholly enjoyable (and memorable) video.

Ms Milian never quite became the Pop star she was poised to be; which is a shame if you ask us. She ticks all the boxes requisite for break-out stars at the time – radio-ready music, serviceable vocals, a stunning look and engaging visuals.

Still, when all is said and done, the one thing that C. Mili is not is a flop – as evidenced by her arguable omnipresence in music, TV, and cinema.

This song used to SLAY, but she gave a watered down Mya tea and the GP didn’t connect. *plays Dip It Low*

    • King Mark111 June 5, 2016

I always thought this song was a rip off of May’s Free.

      • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

Wasn’t this song released before “Free” by Mya, or least around same era meaning it was recorded at same time unbeknownst? Regardless this is way better than “Free” to me.

    • One in a Milian June 5, 2016

      Who connected with Ciara?

      • Junior in Jamaica June 6, 2016

        @MusicFan103

This has nothing on Mya’s FREE. Dancing does NOT stand a chance for one!

    • Junior in Jamaica June 6, 2016

Very watered down Mya lol. She was in Mya’s “Best of Me” with Jadakiss too.

      • Music103 June 6, 2016

Honestly I don’t even recall the “Free MV. But I was speaking of song it self. I don’t care for “Free” by Mya.

This was when Def Jam tried to market her as Britney Spears. She was all over the place, and not in a good way. 3 years later she would s** it up as a Beyonce and later get street like a Ciara. Crazy how her and Bey are allegedly the same age. (and she turned down a song called SOS, some other artist picked it up and it becomes her first #1 hit. One of many to come.)

    • Jamon June 5, 2016

I would never understand why she turned down SOS and went with “Say I” as her lead single. She’s still very talented though, decent vocals and can dance her ass off!!

    • Career Ender June 5, 2016

what does her and Bey allegedly being the same old in years have to do with this post?
      .
      Marikos?

      • King Mark111 June 5, 2016

That your fave looks 10 years older than her peers and ages horribly.

    • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

Interesting analysis. The “AM to PM” was very Urban but still very Pop Britney like. Video style almost reminded me of the “Crazy” Britney MV. Yeah the “Dip It Low” era I could see too. Such a damn shame she let go of the song that basically catapulted Rihanna to the high heavens of Pop music too. Are you saying her “Say I” / ‘So Amazin’ era was her Ciara one though? Not sure if I see that as much as the Britney and Beyonce like eras.

    • RihYonce June 5, 2016

Beyoncé hasn’t aged since she first stepped on the scene . Stop being a delusional it’s really getting sickening how much you hate somebody that don’t even know you ! How do you look tho ? Oh ok

      • Meiz June 6, 2016

Stop lying. She looks like a granny now.She ain’t ageing well

  3. RihNavy June 5, 2016

    Flop.

    • One in a Milian June 5, 2016

The only flop here is you b****

  4. Slayty Perry (Prism’s 5 Billion Streams) June 5, 2016

She always seemed like a Discount Ashanti to me. There was nothing distinctive about her.

    • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

      LMFAO! Too funny.

I think she should have played up on her being Latina early on in her career, that would have aligned her to be the biggest Latina and take over where J.Lo left off, but instead she branded herself as a black R&B singer. I didn’t find out she was Cuban till in the last 5-7 years, def didn’t know in the early 00s she was.

      • krist June 6, 2016

She did play up being Latina early on and when Dip it low came out it was, “I’m black y’all!”

  5. BIGGES AALIYAHFAN June 5, 2016

I miss videos like this. My childhood. Sigh.

    • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

I know, its such a lost art. The 90s into the early and mid 00s had just great music videos and music in general. I think now there is less care for good music videos because they are on demand and not played on TV, so why spend as much money or effort for an art people don’t tend to view in droves as they used to. I miss my youth though. Such a great time to grow up. Millennials STAND UP!

  6. The Kpop Guy, Matt~ June 5, 2016

Damn. Isn’t this the Kim possible song?

    • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

That was “Call Me Beep Me” but her, yes.

  7. #formulation ?☕ June 5, 2016

    She is s*** af

  8. MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

Back in the day this was the jam! I wis that she took more care and pride in her music career rather being a TV personality. Like why didn’t she use The Voice to re-springboard her career as a vocalist rather than as a reality star/personality? I advent heard her most recent EP she released BUT there was a song snippet she released called “Zipper” that was hot AF and should have been released. This was around 2009-2011 ish.

The sad thing is “Dip It Low” and even this “AM to PM” on a Pop/Disney route showed she could have success and win. I mean even her Ja Rule “Between Me & You” duet was a major hit that lined her up for success.

Get your ish together Milian. You sing, dance, act, are pretty, stop be such a C-list celeb when you can at minimum be a B lister.

  9. Smoove Jones June 5, 2016

Free by Mya came before A.M. to P.M. Free was better. This was cute but a bit cheesey too. She always came off as a Mya, Ashanti, Beyonce clone.

  10. The Kpop Guy, Matt~ June 5, 2016

Mess. Just read the other posts and the no life having trio of ass kissers really can’t help but seek attention and stir shít randomly to try and get over.

    • RihNavy June 5, 2016

      Keep it.

  11. Credits June 5, 2016

There was just nothing about her that set her apart. Nothing distinctive about her voice, sound or look. Her counterparts at the time, ashanti, Beyonce and amerie each had their own thing going for them.

    • MusicFan103 June 5, 2016

Probably this is what it was. Why I think she should have owned the Cuban American thing. Nobody else has even owned that since Gloria Estefan, so she could have been the 2000s version.

  12. Yes June 5, 2016

In my delusional head, Christina is better than Beyoncé and another Beyoncé put together.

  13. Gee June 5, 2016

Christina is said to have f’ed for tracks and she became more known for her relationships rather than her art. To honest with the right material and marketing she have been a star but then again nothing about her stands out other than she is very beautiful but nothing more.

    • MusicLife June 5, 2016

She fvcked with nearly every producer or record CEO she was aligned with. Even her film costar Nick Cannon, The Dream, Dre of Cool and Dre, Lil Wayne, and there were a few others too. It’s sad too that she always mixed business with pleasure because she only in the end ended up fvkcing herself (over).

  14. Jay June 5, 2016

    That dance break was lit.

  15. Credits June 5, 2016

She falls in a category with Nivea, commercially speaking. Nivea has a great voice though. Both were featured on hot songs and had one solo hit but could never really pop to the masses. This is interesting lol considering that Christina dated both nivea’s exes.

    • MusicLife June 5, 2016

You mean Nivea’s baby daddies. I was waiting for Milian to get pregnant by Wayne to make it more strange. Still could happen easily though.

    • MusicLife June 5, 2016

Also in the category, Tweet, Truth Hurts, Sharissa, Shareefa, … Maybe even Lil Mo.

      • Credits June 6, 2016

Naw, don’t do my girl tweet like that lol. Her first album went gold and she was featured on multiple hit songs with Missy Elliott. But we can add Brooke valentine. On another note, shareefa’s album was underrated, I still listen to it today, she sang about that hood struggle man…

      • MusicLife June 6, 2016

Credits I did enjoy Shareefa singles.

I only know of two tweet songs where she was featured too. Not multiple ones. I liked her back in 2002

  16. king June 5, 2016

This used to be my wish. This was back when christina had good music. And back when she used to slay

  17. Junior in Jamaica June 6, 2016

She will forever regret turning down “SOS” that Rihanna hit out the park.

Then again…she probably would’ve murdered it with her airy weak vocals. Rihanna added that little something!

Christina knew well what she was doing, because she couldn’t deliver it. 🙂

    • MusicLife June 6, 2016

She must regret it yes. But she turned it down because it was too Pop in her opinion

  18. Coolness June 6, 2016

The 2000s were really the list decade of R&B, lol. So many artists with BOPS but then fizzled out quickly. Think Mya, Tweet, Amerie, Mario, Bobby Valentino, Lloyd and many more. As far as the 2000s were concerned, I thought Christina Milian was one of the most gorgeous girls in Urban/Pop music – right up there with J.Lo and Beyoncé. However, she didn’t really have something about her that stood out. On her first album, she was the Urban Britney Spears and then on her second, she was styled as a Beyoncé-esque s*x pot and on her third, she was giving a Ciara tea. I hate that she’s become this bird who screwed herself over because of the men she dated. Still, When You Look At Me is one of my favorite songs ever.

  19. What Now June 6, 2016

I used to love this damn song! She’s a very beautiful girl with a good amount of potential talent, but she never connected to the GP. I really never understood, but it is what it is. Those Dreams child support checks will take care of her for the 13 years and that is more than enough time to get a new baller.

  20. Reddish tran ivy blokz Need UK timelyyou June 6, 2016

    Nice song
