TGJ Roundtable: 2016 MTV VMAs – Review

Published: Monday 29th Aug 2016 by Sam

Welcome to the latest TGJ Roundtable!

Over the years, That Grape Juice has established a distinguished voice that – whether loved or loathed – sparks discussion, debate, and on occasion drama!

Though comprised of seasoned writers who share a similar outlook on Urban Pop culture, the idiosyncrasies of the TGJ team members often lend for quite heated debates “behind the scenes” about the hottest topics.

Now, we give you a front row seat to the show. In a format similar to ‘The View’ or ‘The Real’, TGJ editors – Sam, David, Rashad, and Joe – get real in a very candid way.

Today’s roundtable topic is the…

 2016 MTV VMAs Review

Sam

For me, this year’s VMAs were a titillating touchdown with Beyonce and Rihanna as its undoubtable MVP’s.

Rih obviously watched the BET Awards and borrowed their approach to the Prince tribute, which if you remember was also split up and interspliced across the evening’s festivities.

In doing so, she was able to effectively and entertainingly celebrate the various layers of her sound and success narrative. The Bashment and ballad segments were especially enjoyable, as was her speech. It all legitimately had me wondering…why so hard on her?

And then I remembered attending the ‘ANTI Tour’ in London and watching her lazily go through the motions; which in turn reminded of Ms. Fenty’s primary problem.

She’s inconsistent and only seems to pull her finger out when she knows there’s weight of expectation. In reality, she’d be much more compelling if she insisted on slaying everyday.

To her credit though, her stage wins are becoming more of a regularity, so kudos to her.

Beyonce, as ever, owned the evening from a performance standpoint.

At 15-minutes long, her live rendition of ‘Lemonade’ re-affirmed her as this generation’s most daring, most bold, and most envelope pushing. Like, who does that? She does. And that’s what cements her brilliance.

I recall watching an interview with a manager at Parkwood following the release of the self-titled album. She said, moving forward, the singer was only interested in signing on to things she could do differently. Looking at her moves since then, from co-owning Ivy Park to showings like last night, it’s clearly a thread that’s been present in everything.

Already an icon, denying Queen Bey’s impending legend status is like denying water is wet.

Speaking of Pop icons, Britney Spears was a welcome surprise. Having fallen for the okey-doke one too many times, these days I go into her performances with zero expectation. But oh did she deliver. Sure her mic was off, but her energy and choreography were “on.” It’s warming to see there’s still mileage in her engine.

Elsewhere, Ariana and Nicki’s showing fell somewhat flat. Primarily due to Grande’s oddly shaky vocals. Kanye‘s rant was incoherent waffle and is beyond redundant at this point. Although I’d gladly sit through it again knowing that Teyana Taylor‘s epic performance in that ‘Fade’ video would crown it off.

Still, all in all, a great show with many a memorable moment!

David

Another awesome showing from the MTV VMAs! Going into last night’s ceremony it dawned on many music lovers that this year’s show could legitimately boast of having an all-star lineup. Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj.

Unfortunately, I’d say only three of the aforementioned acts lived up to the hype. The first? Rihanna. Undoubtedly under pressure to deliver performances worthy of competing with Beyonce’s the star broke ground by honouring her Caribbean roots with a set and tracklist built to celebrate the dancehall parties that birthed so much of what is trending in Pop today. Was it as groundbreaking as it should have been? No. Did it see the vocalist push herself out of her comfort zone to execute choreography and an enjoyable theme? Yes.

Britney Spears’ delivery of ‘Make Me’ served as another highlight for me. Though she’s far removed from the dancer she was when she first touched the VMA stage, her performance was a reminder that even at her worst she still stands head and shoulders above the choreography-shy newbies she’s often compared to.

Beyonce? Nailed it! Eagle-eyed viewers would have noticed her performance’s emphasis on water’s relation to fire (see blue and red lights during ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’) and the return of Anthony Burrell who joined the performer on stage to recreate their ‘Flaws and All’ ‘Angel meets girl’ piece at the end of ‘Pray You Catch Me.’ Quite interestingly, after years of coming under critical fire for being repetitive, it was Bey above anyone else who offered the most subversive showing of the night. Steering clear of her moves of yesteryear, the icon introduced MTV’s viewers to some of ‘Lemonade’s African-inspired imagery and a performance style rooted in contemporary Hip-Hop and Blues Rock.

As for Ariana? She should have spent more time in rehearsal.

Rashad

The 2016 VMAs were easily the best rendition of the show in years. Kicking off as promised with a show-stopping performance from Rihanna, the Bajan diva reminded every hater that she indeed was more than deserving of the Vanguard honor being bestowed upon her. By the time she performed her slower numbers, she proved herself worthy of every compliment Drake lent when he was presenting her the award.

The most anticipated performance of the night, Britney Spears, may have exceeded many-an-expectation but if you asked me, it’s all too little too late. Yes, she deserves all the praises she has received for stepping her game up lately. But, after ten years of making excuses for her absent gaze, dry a** hair whips, and Tinman-inspired two steps, the moves she is pulling now should’ve been done at least 5-7 years ago.

thatgrapejuice britney spears 2016 mtv vma

And, to disservice her by putting her directly after Beyoncé was simply a foul play by MTV to Brit and her fans.

Without going on and on about what’s already been said, Bey’s performance was not only the performance of the night, but it easily goes into her top 5 of her entire career. This is an amazing feat for someone 20 years into her career who has set the standard for what constitutes good performances over the last 13 years.

Joe

Can y’all join me in agreeing that this was the best VMAs in years?

Wow! From the get go, last night’s extravaganza looked like Pop’s biggest night on paper. It was a stacked bill. And it didn’t disappoint.

First things first, it was very interesting to see how MTV not only managed to get both Beyonce and Rihanna on the same bill, but also gift them “15 minutes to slay” each.

Since Rihanna caters to many flavors, it was clever to split up her time in 4 different segments. And with Bey being all about servicing bodies of work, telling stories… and selling concert tickets, the full-on quarter hour she was awarded was put to good use.

Both ladies were fantastic on the MSG stage. Neither serviced anything we hadn’t seem from them before, yet still they played to their own strengths. Spectacle and vocals for Mrs Carter; fun and charisma for Ms Fenty.

Sadly, Ariana and Nicki couldn’t replicate the fierceness of their newly released ‘Side To Side’ video. All that bike movement had Ari sounding shaky. Still, singing live is always commendable. Especially when other components are factored in.

A great segue-way to Britney Spears.

As of late it seems the diva is regaining her past abilities, both musically and visually. And last night she seemed on a mission for the world to see she’s “back.” A mission she achieved. For the most part.

For me, it could have been perfect, if it wasn’t for the unapologetic lip-syncing. She looked “present” and “woke” and her chemistry with G-Eazy was off the richter. But that “not-even-pretending-to-sing” nonsense won’t stick in 2016. I’d highly recommend a solid pre-record for her future performances.

Still, “it’s Britney Bitch, as we can see on iTunes at the moment where ‘Make Me’ is #2.

kvma2

Alicia Keys’ beautiful poem, the overall camaraderie that seemed to be reigning, and Kanye’s upbeat attitude were warm touches as well. But was I the only one thinking MTV did Taylor wrong by placing emphasis on THAT particular line in ‘Famous’ any time ‘Ye West was seen or mentioned? Overkill.

Nonetheless, MTV redeemed themselves from last year’s mediocre madness thanks to an A-list line-up of artists, who delivered show-stopping performances. There was a palpable air of one-up-man-ship, which was a treat for the viewer. I’m so here for that flavor of friendly competition!

Honorable mention for the dark horse of the show: Teyana Taylor. What a SLAY!

Rihanna last performance was cute . Sam I’ve been saying that for the longest. Overall I think Rihanna came thru. Solid performance. Her speech was so cute. I think her and drake looks cute together!

Every news outlet is say Beyoncé stole the show last night. She is the Queen!!!!!!

    • RICHIE_RICH August 29, 2016

That’s all their taking about . Our black queens Bey&Riri with a hint of Brit.

The Black girls are winning !!!!!!!

    • IStan4Rihanna. August 29, 2016

I definitely think that Beyoncé edges out Rihanna in overall media praise for her performance but I am still pleased that they are the TOP 2 being recognised by most. I adore them both so much (although I’m a bigger fan of RiRi). 😉

Richie I read a while back that you’re a fashion Gurl so would you pleas explain the direction that Beyonce is taking when it comes to her Red carpet and day wear like I get its fashion but please school me.

    • Sam August 29, 2016

Thats to be expected from news outlets, i’m more interested in what the people are saying (and not on this blog)

  2. Mark August 29, 2016

    1. Rihanna had the best performance of the night period! I dont care how much the pest try to shove her down on thoughts. Her angles where on point and choreography was detailed.
She came to rock. She is definitely ready for the SB.
    2. Britney- What was Britney doing?.You don’t have to watch the performance to know it sucked. The pics of her was a mess. She doesn’t know her angles anymore.
3.Beyonce-What’s new with this woman? Same ol hands on the hip and poppin her chest routine. The pest are very predictable like their fav. She is all front loaded hype. The singles will fall flat next week.
    4.Ariana Grande? Yawnnnnn

    • Vivi August 29, 2016

      Spam Removed.

    • Marley August 29, 2016

How can you say that about Beyonce doing the same ole thing, but rihanna gets on stage and still sings flat notes?….lmaoooooo

  3. IStan4Rihanna. August 29, 2016

Rihanna and Beyonce RULED the night and the various publications are there to prove so.

    .

What’s interesting is that I’ve been frequenting multiple pages online about the VMA’s last night and YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE the amount of racist, hate-filled comments I’ve seen towards both Rihanna and Beyonce with quote a few coming directly from Britney fans/stans; Black women dominated yesterday evening and the disgustingly bigoted, White, internet trolls cannot handle that.

    .

Nonetheless, once again, Rihanna and Beyoncé were the best of the bunch; both are living, breathing icons of the 21st century pop scene and they both deserve immense praise and credit.

    .

P.S: Both are the only acts to now have TWO VOTY awards and a VANGUARD. #BlackGirl’sRock.

    • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

Not surprised at the racist comments. You should see how they’re dragging Colin Kapernick (is that how you spell it) for refusing to stand during the national anthem due to injustice against blacks. They’re wishing death and everything on the man.

But I agree with your stance on the VMAS

  4. S****** Blonde August 29, 2016

In my honest opinion they all sucked, the oversexualized performances, no clothes on (almost naked), nothing but women desperate for attention. And they still wonder why they aren’t respected in the industry as men are. THEY ALL SUCKED.

    • Career Ender August 29, 2016

There are certain songs which Rihanna and Beyonce didn’t sexualise
      .
Otherwise everything is now overaexualised, including most male lizzards you stan for
      .
Its hard to slay the stage classy with vocals only
      .
Your Dead fave was too extreme is sexualising perfomances, so lets not!

      • JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

        Career Ender
I´ve been growing respect for you lately. And I agree with your comment. You´re right, it´s hard to slay teh stage in a classy way only with vocals. From this generation only Adele does, and the last ones to truly do it were Celine, Mariah and Whitney. Beyonce has never had that power, and well, non singers obviously cannot do it 🙂 Don´t hate me 🙂

      • BEY>RIH August 29, 2016

Bey most definitely has enough power to perform a song without dancing/ selling s**. She is a better vocalist and singer than adelephant and has numerous reciepts of her being the best mainstream vocalist in pop today. I suggest you to watch her performace of listen on Oprah. Amazing.

      • JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

        BEY<RIH (I agree LOL)
What a buthurt stan. Where did I say Beyonce can or cannot do it? I said only Adele is doing it. Are you going to deny that? LMAO 20 or 30 million albums sold with each of her albums with "only" singing on stage. The ones I said that cannot do it are the "non-singers", a group where I didn´t put Beyonce. So relax. That said, no, I don´t think Beyonce could have had a whole career with just that alone. Her voice doesn´t move people in that way. She has other things, don´t be mad.

    • FASHION_ICON ~ Anti&Lemonade August 29, 2016

Say the Madonna fan …my god

      • Ayyseify August 29, 2016

Kii a madinna fan speak about oversexualized… homegirl ??

      • Ayyseify August 29, 2016

        Madonna **

    • JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

      S******
I agree with you. But it is also true that coming from one of Madonna´s biggest fans… 🙂 🙂 🙂 All in all you know I understand your point. It´s true that there´s a lack of variety and that everybody oversexualizes everything on stage now. That´s the problem, everybody and all the time.

  5. MsYonce August 29, 2016

Beyonce came thru she had the best performance don’t matter how much shade you try to throw she had the best period

    2. I think Rihanna was second it’s solid for Rihanna standards. It wasn’t what everyone said it was gonna be at all but good for her.

    3. I finally got to watch Britney’s performance and I’m disappointed as hell she didn’t come thru at all

  6. nico August 29, 2016

S****** blonde lol is apart that’s clear

  7. MsYonce August 29, 2016

Rihanna isn’t known for her performing at all although she has some cute moments. All the hype they were giving Rihanna’s performance before the show gave people high expectations. Throwing out words like ” Legendary, most iconic ” etc and it was nothing of the sort. They should have just let Rih do her thing

    • Hmmm… August 29, 2016

Yes. The same thing happened with her comments about being “timeless”. She said she wanted to make timeless music and weeks later released bbhmm. And now you had people hyping this performance like it was going to be groundbreaking, and it wasn’t. It would’ve been received differently if her expectations weren’t already set, like that. She needs to let her performances speak for themselves. Rihanna is way too inconsistent to have her performances hyped before hand.

  8. King B August 29, 2016

I read that there’s about three million tweets about Yonce last night. Who needs meat dress, snake wrapped around you, Robin Thicke, dissing other artist when you have talents?

  9. Fancy BISH August 29, 2016

Britney’s nocals were on fleek last night lol

    • Misdemeanor August 29, 2016

      ??????. Girllllll

  10. King B August 29, 2016

I didn’t know that P**** Patting is a brand new choreography from Rih cuz Mark surely think it’s a brand new moves.

    • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

She wasn’t p**** patting during her performances. She actually executed the moves really well

    • Cold August 29, 2016

It wasn’t p**** patting she did the 3rd move in her arsenal v***** vogue

  11. IStan4Rihanna. August 29, 2016

    @KING B.

    .

Beyonce managed to score 2.2 million tweets on Twitter overall; Rihanna scored 1.8 million tweets.

    .

Beyonce was the most mentioned artist on Twitter and Rihanna was the most mentioned on Facebook.

  12. B2B August 29, 2016

B proved that she is not in the same league with the others. Male or female it make no difference. She literally performed tf outta her segment yet did so with ease. It like something unreal for an award show and I still wanted more. After Formation I could have watched the rest. It was so good I re-winded it to watch again because that cant be life!

  13. King B August 29, 2016

Queen B and Rih rules the night tho!

  14. MsYonce August 29, 2016

Overall the VMAs were boring as hell I thought it was gonna be lit but the show as a whole was really boring. Those hosts were annoying from start to finish

    • Ayyseify August 29, 2016

B*tch!!!! I was over the host! They weren’t funny at all… MTV f’ed up big time with that

    • Wash yo mouth pls August 29, 2016

like who TF were they lol? They need to chill with these Twitter/Insta celebs

  15. Mel August 29, 2016

    I loved Rihanna,only reason I watched.The End.

  16. #TeamTinashe Stan August 29, 2016

I just want to say if there was ever a time to STAN for Beyonce was last night! I’m not her biggest fan but do get excited when I hear performers like her are performing at an award show as singers/dancers are always the best part of the show (imo).

Although Beyonce OWNED the night and put on her BEST performance ever but why did she get more TIME (Over 15 mins) than the lady who was being celebrated for the vanguard?
I actually don’t appreciate Bey for crucially and most consistently slaying tf outta last night like it was her “Vanguard” moment when it was not!
She and MTV were wrong to give her over 15mins as Rihanna should’ve been the only one getting that time.
Historically it kind of cements Beyonce’s way of always trying to overshadow the girls around her clique.
She should’ve made this night to be Rih’s night but wanted 15 mins too(Rih didn’t even do that).

    • #TeamTinashe Stan August 29, 2016

P.s I’m not hating as the word “Hate” doesn’t suit me well but I am just confused to why Bey got more time than Rihanna when she should of gotten the same time she did for the BET Awards.

She literally upstaged her and put on her BEST performance I ever saw.
      HASHTAG: #ThatsNotCool 🙁

      • FASHION_ICON ~ Anti&Lemonade August 29, 2016

        It’s your point of view.
        I see nothing wrong.
For me Rihanna was the best and Beyoncé second but beyonce had a vision and its a coincidence this year mtv honored Rih too.
But for sure Bey like some competition and actually that’s why Rihanna was that good too last night because of bey
It was really Mtv Rihanna vs Beyoncé awards

    • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

Yeah I said that last night too. That was disrespectful of them to give her 15 minutes to perform. That was wack nobody should have gotten that kind od time other than Rihanna. I think thy did that obviously because her performance was one of the most anticipated ones and they wanted the vieweeship but that was wrong period.

      • Coolness August 29, 2016

Why don’t some of y’all being quit being fake and passive aggressive please? Talking about Bey went out of her way to upstage Rihanna. SPARE ME! The latter actually chose to break up what would have been approximately a 15 minute set into four segments. Beyonce on the other hand, was given the opportunity by MTV to do whatever she wants – much like Kanye, who ranted for about 8 minutes with his video debut taking an additional four minutes. So where’s the outrage in his case?

All this talk from the Navy criticising Beyoncé simply confirms the point I’ve been making about for years; she’s a passable talent who garners praise for everything but her talent. Every time I see her perform, there’s all this talk about the looks she serves, the hit song itself and the ‘I don’t give a f**k attitude’ she exudes on stage. Last night simply showed the world that talent, ambition, dedication to ones craft will always come out on top. Bey simply performed to the excellent standard she’s set for herself so why didn’t Rihanna bring her A-game? Well, maybe she did and that’s the best y’all will get out of her.

      • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

No ones being passive aggressive. A 15 minute performance should not been given to anyone…PERIOD besides the recipient of the award. That’s the same time frame Beyonce had when she performed when she received the award so no, its not fair she gets that much time dedicated to her performance point blank period. I think she has an ego. And to be honest, she’s a good performer but it was nothing groundbreaking so y’all can cut the noise and the hype. Most of her performance weve all seen before only y’all stans think its groundbreaking.

Rihanna came out shaky but i think she redeemed herself in the end. The dance hall theme slayed, she always does good on Diamonds and Love on the brain and her slower tempo songs.

  17. Gloaria August 29, 2016

Beyonce a jealous b**** came to take Rih’s night but failed so hard cause Rih came much harder in her 4th performance. Viva Legend.

  18. FASHION_ICON ~ Anti&Lemonade August 29, 2016

While some are hating. There is no deny of the bosses Beyoncé and Rihanna…how can you get a 15 min perf like nothing ? How can you perform 4 times like if it’s your concert ?
Honestly Mtv just show us that the 2 biggest female artist right now is indeed Queen Bey and Bad gal riri .
Riri has so many hits she too versatile and show to every snakes and hyena that she can sing very good if she want..throw a dancehall party if she want… dance make some.choreo..
Bey the visual were stunning but i only liked the end of the perfomance (dont hurt yourself and formation) the beginning was boring and i ve seen all her perfomance during her tour so i was a bit annoyed but she slayed
    Britney Spears bye
    Nicki Minaj bye and bye
Ariana Grande boring and flat vocals hmmmm
There were two unknow artist the girl have a nice voice …
I feel like Drake and Rihanna thing it’s publicity…
Beyoncé gonna receive the illuminati comments again man even myself i doubt right now …

  19. Ty August 29, 2016

In all honesty Beyonce is the highlight of these shows 99%… Her dedication to her craft is unreal everyone else just does these half assed attempts or rely on lame gimmicks. Rihanna I don’t expect much from her performances so I can’t criticises her too much. But I do lowkey think mtv did Rihanna wrong this was supposed to be her night but she ended up sidelined by Beyonce.

  20. iSpeakTruthNoFallacy August 29, 2016

I got to see the epitome of the meaning of #BlackExcellence last night. Rihanna gave some serious choreography while showing how multi-faceted she is with each performance, and I love seeing her growth. Plus, I love the aesthics of each performance especially the first one. Those four performances are my favorite of her career! Yonce came in and killed the stage. She continues to prove that she is the best performer of the millennial generation. Both females continue to further etch themselves in the stone of music history. The video for Fade was really dope too! Teyana killedt that video, and Future was cool too Commas is my jam!. Key and Peele were mentally challenged and just straight up annoying. In the end, the VMA’s further show that at the end of the day, 2016 is the year of the black music!

  21. The Kpop Guy, Matt~ August 29, 2016

The reason that i was not present last night is because beyonce reached into me and snatched me from the inside out. i had to gather and rih evaluate my myself before i could comment on here again.

that said, i was right about yesterday. rihanna gave me hints of gimme more ’07 teas when she opened. she did ok but was ultimately drowned out by everybey else.

I love that nicki and arianna look like they have a relationship like kunty and rih.

    britney improved since the bbma

Lastly, i’m glad GAGA and CL weren’t there. so many careers ended last night, Gaga is prepping a comeback and did not need to try and compete with that and CL would have ended in the USA before she even started

    • JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

To be expected from Rihanna 🙂 I agree with all your points.

  22. Pop August 29, 2016

Beyoncé slayed the night. Even Rih was shook after she performed. Rihanna only had one good performance and that was at the end.

  23. School August 29, 2016

I was bored all night! Nothing fresh from ANYONE!

  24. Kyle August 29, 2016

Britney’s performance was fun energetic & great dancing. Y’all gotta admit she did good & slayed! Beyonce was just over the top, Rihanna wasn’t good I’m sorry but her last performance was on point! The rest, Eh who cares?! Lol

  25. MsYonce August 29, 2016

That new choreography Bey added to Formation snatched my soul she should at that part to the tour

    • Tori August 29, 2016

Yeah, I knew i wasn’t going crazy. There’s new choreography in Formation and she used some of the choreography fr Formation video in Sorry if I’m not mistaken. I really hope the new setlist for the tour follow the steps of this performance. I think she should perform all 12 songs in their exact order as well as adding her old songs as they fit the theme to follow the break up/make up theme of the album. That would be dope as hell.

  26. MsYonce August 29, 2016

So Bey’s performance was over 15 mins and Rihanna performance altogether was a little over 12 mins ????? I didn’t know that tbh

    • Metzo August 29, 2016

Lol. The music industry put Bey on such a high pedestal and i understand why. Rightfully so tbh.

  27. Misdemeanor August 29, 2016

Nicki debuted her new child berthing hips in that blue dress. I see you NicKIM

  28. Kels August 29, 2016

When Beyoncé said dust to side chicks I know Rihanna got a little queasy

    • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

Why? Its not Rihannas fault her husband cheated on her.

  29. cocobutta August 29, 2016

I loved the opening. I got my BASHMENT LIFE and said a RiRi bad it up to rass.

Beyonce just gets it on stage. Too many say “Im inspired by MJ” but yet can’t even deliver the bare minimum of visual excellence. I enjoy her voice but it’s the stage presence that truly does it for me overall. SHE ON FIRE!!!

Dunno if a coincidence but Bey and Ri have been in quite a few places country wise at more or less the same time.
    England, France etc….
Great move by MTV getting them both on same bill and extra kudos to Ri for knowing she dat bish that can step up.

I liked Brit but not her performance slot placing.

    {sidenote: Is there something wrong with Brandy? Acting real shady snakey on the gram.}

    • iSpeakTruthNoFallacy August 29, 2016

Yes! Rih brought the entire Caribbean Sea to the VMA stage. Plus, Rih stepped up to the plate and was not scared of Beyonce

  30. Mel August 29, 2016

Goes to show Beyonce is a narcissist and selfish, nevertheless with all the theatrics, when you listen to her songs, they don’t sound good, but I love Rihanna entire Anti album, cause its amazing. The awards Beyonce got were not deserved, but given her only because of her name,as was that long performance, and still I’m more interested in Drake and Rihanna hug, kiss and Rihanna’s beautiful speech, always tryna outdo somebody else is selfish and tired and unbecoming for someone who’s been out so long, needs a slice of humble pie

  31. Pop August 29, 2016

Rihanna sounds horrible and her moves are very stiff. It’s almost like she takes her fans for granted and don’t give AF about them. #sorrynotsorry. She had 3 times to get it right.
I know ya’ll that stroke face she was making trying to hit those notes in “Needed Me”.
Bey stayed her in one performance.

  32. The Great Lacefronce. August 29, 2016

Beyonce has no class she asked for a 15 minute slot because QUEEN RIH was getting the Vanguard award and she was JEALOUS her rival is getting the same award! She is so bitter and vindictive and THREATENED . She HAS TO do the visual thing the LEMONADE SONGS dont stand out on their own .thats why she needs a CIRCUS to perform .

    DONT @ ME with lies

    • Mr.StLaurent August 29, 2016

      ????????
Don’t come for Queen Bey unless she send for you !!
Rihanna did good for her, the last performance was the better one.
And Beyonce don’t need to ask for perform, they ask her to.

Beyonce overshadow Rihanna…. Like always. Deal with it ??

      • The Great Lacefronce. August 29, 2016

But no one knew the words to any of the songs how did she overshadow the QUEEN AND YOUNGER RECEIPIENT OF THE AWARD ???? when she asked the crowd to sing along it was dead silence ???????????

    • Tori August 29, 2016

She didn’t “ask” for anything! MTV “ask” her to be there. They also told her, & Kanye for that matter, the could do whatever they wanted. The only difference is that they gave Kanye a timeslot and didn’t give her one. And did you not hear the audience singing along to “Sorry” and “Hold Up”? You & Drake’s scripted speech are full of s***. How come Rihanna didn’t put as much time and effort into her 4 performances like Beyonce did for her one performance? Why didn’t she premier a hot ass video like Kanye and TT? All of her performances were B******* and the sad part is that she was giving all she could. I’m not even a Rihanna hater, as a fan of both ladies I can honestly say that Rihanna was the artists getting praised for her name while Beyonce actually worked her ass off for 15 minutes and 56 seconds, that why she was told to do whatever she wanted and when her next album drop, they’ll probably give her 20 full minutes while Rihanna gets another under 5 minutes performance slot.

  33. Mel August 29, 2016

Rihanna could get on stage and drink coffee and I still like her better than beyonce, used to like b way back before she reveal her true self,I couldn’t wait til she off my TV screen

  34. Kyle August 29, 2016

Britney’s performance was fun energetic & great dancing. Y’all gotta admit she did good & slayed! Beyonce was just over the top, Rihanna wasn’t good I’m sorry but her last performance was on point! The rest, Eh who cares?! Lol

    • Ayyseify August 29, 2016

Grit was a hot white southern mess…. STAWP! Grit mic was off notice when g-easy touched her face while she was in her “falsetto” she said no but the mic mysteriously didn’t pick it up. Kii

  35. #TeamTinashe Stan August 29, 2016

    Teyana Taylor killedt it!
A lot of white news outlets were getting heat for saying something like “The girl in Kanye’s video was on MTV’s “Sweet Sixteen” click the link blah blah” but I understand it as there is ALOT of people that don’t know what a Teyana Taylor is.
Teyana Taylor isn’t even that big of star yet but black people were acting as if she is. She doesn’t even have a top 40 hit or anything right now so she is considered new to the GP. So I understand!
Her album is dope so hopefully Kanye invests more into her for her album as I heard she’s having problems with Def Jam records.

  36. Cinnamon Girl August 29, 2016

Rihanna was wack. No talent at all. Poor thing. Beyonce showed why she’s QUEEN

  37. LB August 29, 2016

Rihanna came through, I like that she divided her show into 4 segments which signify her career and catalog of music, we got almost all flavors of Rihanna, it was great. Plus she had to cut her songs short because she has so many hits she couldn’t perform them all.
    ,
Beyonce was good too, I was entertained.
    ,
Britney, I think I’m going to pass on that one.
    ,
Overall I only cared to see Rihanna, and she delivered.

  38. Ayyseify August 29, 2016

Rihanna and beyonce! That is all

  39. iSpeakTruthNoFallacy August 29, 2016

Donald Trump supporters are all mad on Twitter about the VMA’s, but they just mad cause last night proved that black culture currently reigns supreme. Y’all act like any of those wonderbread poptarts could keep up. Hell, Britney couldn’t even keep up. So, we for sure know that no Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, or T Swift could even sit next to them. Shoutout to both Rih and Bey. I now have performances to watch for an entire year!

  40. Wash yo mouth pls August 29, 2016

Question to the Beyhive and others
Which televised performance do you reckon is BEYONCE’S worst/unmemorable

    • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~tyler August 29, 2016

I’ve never seen her put on a “bad” performance. Beyonce’s really consistent. Wbu?

    • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~tyler August 29, 2016

Beyonce said f*** Riri and her award lol ????

    • Cold August 29, 2016

Id say early dc she is where you’ll find her worst

  41. LB August 29, 2016

As someone else mentioned, why ask for a 15 min slot on someone else’s day, so Beyonce us the one who has a problem with Rihanna and not the other way around.

    • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

Exactly and yesterday the hive claimed rihanna was intimidated before the show started. It looks like its the other way around to me since she tried to compete with Rihannas time frame

      • LB August 29, 2016

        True

    • Hmmm… August 29, 2016

If Beyoncé wasn’t a threat and has no hits with the same tired performances like the navy always says, what does it matter? According to Navy, nobody remembers Beyoncé’s performances. So what does it matter? Chile, wipe the egg off your face and keep it moving. The navy is just mad that whenever Beyoncé’s in the room, no one cares about Frih. Maybe she’ll have better luck next year when Bey goes back on vacation.

      • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

Bye faag. No ones mad about that long funeral peeformance. The point is, she feels the need to compete with rih not the other way around.

      • LB August 29, 2016

Navy isn’t mad, just pointing out what a horrible person Beyonce is and this shows that she is a snake behind the scenes.

All that playing to the gallery to show what a genuine person she is is all a well collaborated act.

The point remains, whether it was Kanye or Taylor or Madonna performing, non of them would have asked for a 15 min slot on someone else’s night, because they have respect for other people, something Beyonce could learn a lot from.

Your fav has a lot of growing up to do, she just showed how much of a child she is.

      • LB August 29, 2016

Exactly Keri, Beyonce is doing the absolute most and going all out of her way to try and compete with Rihanna who is not even thinking about her.

She is pathetic to be honest.

      • Keri Qween August 29, 2016

        Lb they’re in denial hun

The only reason she felt the need to perform for 15 minutes is because Rihanna was there. She didn’t perform that long at the BET awards. Why because Rihanna wasn’t there. And like you said its still tacky of her to do that on someone else’s night. She is pathetic. Thumb down all yall want IDC.

      • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~tyler August 29, 2016

The Navy is salty af! That’s why Frih’s dancer released Beys set list before the show Lol. Beyonce is the better performer hands down, no question about it . If Rihanna would invest in a vocal coach and stop smoking cigarettes, maybe she too would have had the stamina/vocals to perform for 15 minutes straight *gulps lemonade*

      • Hmmm… August 29, 2016

No one’s mad? Are you sure? Because the trail of foam you’ve left up and down every BeyMA post says otherwise.

  42. ???????Chile, take this “Itty Bitty Piggy” to the market and make sure you hold her hand while crossing the street!??????? August 29, 2016

OMG! What a freaking night! When Rih came out in the “urban” 2000s outfit with the durag, my mouth dropped to the floor. That Caribbean segment was everything, though. She curved Drake yet again, even when he looked so damn good last night. Bey was absolutely amazing too.

  43. ???????Chile, take this “Itty Bitty Piggy” to the market and make sure you hold her hand while crossing the street!??????? August 29, 2016

Lol. The whites are so predictable. I knew that they were gonna be seething to death all of last night and today about Bey and Rih’s performances being long. Last night, we were even lucky to get a taste of Pop Rih, Dancehall/Caribbean Rih, Urban/R&B Rih, and Ballad Rih. They better be grateful and shut the hell up with all that hatred.

  44. Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~tyler August 29, 2016

Beyonce said f*** Riri and her award lol

  45. chileplease August 29, 2016

Chile please is right…yall love to play that race card..yes i am black and gay….the blacks target and trash the white artist if it has nothing to do with beyonce…its a shame and disgusting how yall bash britney now…everyone did great!the whole show was great….you guys have to do better…

  46. JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

Well, Beyonce had the best performance of the night obviously. As expected. I mean, it´s not like we are in the days when SEVERAL big artists could give big showing of different types (dancing, vocals, whatever). Now pretty much Beyonce is the only big performer. Obviously nobody sane expected different and nothing different happened. She was the best.
Rihanna I´d say she´s in that path of doing her best to date, she seems to do it at awards shows. Quality wise it was similar to the Billboard awards performance: mediocre. She can not do better than that. And we know it. See *rent´s explanation of why Rihanna is basic in the following video.
Seeing some Rihanna fans mad cause another performer stole the night is funny. Beyonce is better give it up. That´s why they can trust her and give her the time they or she want. Like I said only big performer. Gaga would be the only other one if she hadn´t disappeared and stopped having the mainstream pop success that is required to have all these basic trolls talking.
No, Beyonce´s artistry has never moved me. She lacks in that department. I´m not into her (although she has vastly improved with her last 3 albums). But boy is there any doubt that at this point she is above all those other people on that stage that night?
I still haven´t seen Britney. Not that I care. But if she did better than usual then good for her fans and for her.

KIIIII Sam is coming for you hunny, that vid is gonna get blocked

      • JOHNVIDAL August 29, 2016

LOL yes but I love that video. Nothing but truths 🙂 They hadn´t blocked it some other times I had posted it.

      • Annalise August 29, 2016

DEATH! he got rid of it and said “Spam Removed”!! Sam is PRESSEDT!!! Anyways I love it when He-Who-Shan’t-Be-Named drags Rihanna with his lil Caribbean accent! Sometimes it’s a bit OTT but still hilarious!

      • JOHNVIDAL August 30, 2016

Yes totally hilarious. he almost always is on point anyway. Hilarious or not.

  47. B2B August 29, 2016

So y’all mad that Bey performed a segment of her visual album at the Video Music Awards… Where she was nominated for 11 awards? And not to mention she made the show! And made took a career high home and set a record… Better be glad she didn’t perform lemonade in full. Cause everyone was here for it! She said slay trick or you get eliminated!!!

  48. Annalise August 29, 2016

There are too many IDIOTS on here! Can everyone get a grip please. Being honoured at an award ceremony doesn’t mean that the entire 3 or so hours will be solely about you. The Slavi are just mad that Beyonce killed Rihanna’s night with one performance and walked away with the most awards ever. Beyonce consistently gives 150% on stage. To say she should hold herself back just to make other mediocre performers feel good about themselves, is just plain IDIOTIC… to say the least!

  49. Reality August 29, 2016

I just got done watching the VMA’s and as predicted it was indeed a dull affair. And anyone who thought it was amazing is delusional. With the exception of Beyoncé, who upstaged and out shined everyone, I didn’t miss much. It was good to see Alicia Keys talk about peace and sing a lil. Britney Spears was still stiff and didn’t do anything to stand out. Rihanna was…I don’t even know. She wasn’t bad but she wasn’t great either, just ehh. The overall energy was was none existent and my word what the hell was up with those host?! I remember when the VMA’s was tantalizing and full of drama and controversy and every artist brought it on stage and everyone came to hangout. The VMA’s like MTV is nothing more than a joke.

  50. FC/JC August 29, 2016

Britney was overshadowed, Completely…. I knew it

  51. Blue Ivy Rod August 29, 2016

I loved both of Rihs and Bey’s performances. I thought Rih improved and can’t wait to see more growth, Beyonce was great but I thought she would have done something different this time around. It felt like I was watching something from her Mrs Carter and Formation tour in one. She brought a lot of energy so it made it even better. I feel like both Ri and Bey did well to expand their artistry and do something different, I loved the part when Bey went awf and when Rih brought the whole of Bardados on stage. Things like that will be iconic and things that people will rememeber

  52. Blue Ivy Rod August 29, 2016

Rih’s performances lacked the energy but I do think she is trying and learning to become a better performer in terms of dancing and stuff. Give Rih 2 more years and she will perform much better. All and all if Rih keeps up improving like this then I can see her do his Super bowl or the next. What y’all think?

  53. Oldie August 29, 2016

Honey the shade of it all is some people think Twitter trending is an accomplishment.

Come through with some vocals, some talent, some showmanship at least man. How you gonna get the top award of the night but be upstaged by the “local hoodrat Bey who hasn’t had a hit since 1999”?

How you gonna call yourself a savage and embarrass yourself with struggle vocals this far into your career?

Most embarrassing are the fans. Girl, if I stanned for someone who 10 years into her career STILL struggles to f****** sing a song, I’d be humiliated for myself. Do better. Get yourself some standards.

  54. Blue Ivy Rod August 29, 2016

You do know that Beyonce lipped throughout that whole performance right? chill.. with the Rihanna hate, its not that serious, both females did great and were onm another level than other performers. Rih has a long way to go but I do want to say that this is the most dancing shes did ever and im happy she did so she could prove she can carry the superbowl.

  55. #JACKIE August 29, 2016

Rihanna SUCKS on stage. She has absolutely no stage presence or charisma. I cringe every time she hits the stage. Beyonce SLAYED. I don’t remember Britney or Ariana at all.

    • JOHNVIDAL August 30, 2016

Same analysis as me then 🙂

  56. Stephy August 29, 2016

Beyonka slayed, period. Rihanna did awesome too. The rest was forgettable.

    • Blue Ivy Rod August 29, 2016

MY fav part of Beys was when she went awf and start cussing like a rockstar! That was so dope to me..

Rih’s highlights were def the caribbean wall and her final performance. Overall for a performer that is deemed “lazy” she did a great job, it may have been overshadowed by BEy but Rih was far from the worst act on that stage last night, and had multiple performances which made it weird how the other acts couldn’t get their one and only show good

  57. Mark111 /.\ August 29, 2016

Rihanna gave us four very different sets that was nothing like her tours. That other girl gave y’all Formation and the same crap in 2014 VMAs. Beyonce was pointless and directionless. No message, no theme, just a mess and boring.
    .
Rihanna opened and closed. Gave us dance in the first show, culture in the second, s*** in the thrid and vocals on the final show. I been saying it and Drake repeated it, Rihanna is RIHANNA. She doesn’t need a gimmick or an alter ego, she’s just herself.
    .
Brit did well, Kanye needs speech classes, Doughnut Licker and spinning top looking Nicki SUCKED.

    • Honey G August 31, 2016

No message, no theme, just a mess and boring !! Girl bye. Leave that sh*t for Rihanna.

C’mon you guys are like “yes Rihanna showed us how versatile she is” but the fact is she sang SO BAD, those notes were weak AF except the “ballad part”.
This is why her arenas or stadiums are empty AF.

Most of the navy are blind and deaf. Period.

  58. Valerie August 29, 2016

Lmao the Navy is salty because Beyonce once again stole the show. Stop crying about a 15 mins performance had it been 1 minuite it probably would have still been better than all 3 of Rihannas wack performances put together. Yall acting like the world doesn’t know Beyonce is just better than Rihanna on stage and there is no comparison no matter how long you get.

  59. Nowqd Reddish tran ivy blobukz Need UK timely Ukuno eremixi August 29, 2016

    Nice

  60. Michael August 31, 2016

Personally, I preferred Rihanna’s performance. Love a lot of her songs. Beyonce’s I didn’t really like one song and it was just all too much.
    Lamb4Lyfe!! 🙂
