Billboard Hot 100: Lady Gaga’s ‘Perfect Illusion’ Misses Top 10 With Debut

Much to the dismay of Little Monsters, ‘Perfect Illusion,’ the long-awaited comeback single from Mother Monster Lady Gaga, didn’t exactly scare the competition away upon its recent Billboard Hot 100 debut this week.

Released September 9th to mixed critical review, the dramatic tune has (as of time reporting) accumulated nearly 17 million views on Youtube – a sum that certainly helped its moderate premiere placement on the singles chart.  Add to that sales of 100,000 first-week downloads (week ending Sept. 15), 8.3 million first-week U.S. streams, and 22 million in airplay audience, the Hot 100’s top 10 may have eluded ‘Illusion’ its debut week, but – with the debut of its official accompanying music video tonight –  there may still be hope…

Via Billboard:

“Perfect Illusion” debuts at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Oct. 1).

The lead singles from Gaga’s previous two solo pop albums both logged higher entrances than “Illusion” on the Hot 100. “Applause,” from ARTPOP, started at No. 6 in 2013, before peaking at No. 4, and “Born This Way,” the title cut from her 2011 album, opened at No. 1, where it spent its first six weeks, marking the longest reign of her three leaders (as well as the 1,000th Hot 100 No. 1 all-time). “Applause” began with 218,000 downloads sold and “Born,” 448,000 (the latter sum representing the seventh-best digital sales week for a song to that point, and the third-biggest debut).

Gaga lands her 23rd career Hot 100 entry. Of those, “Illusion” is her 14th to reach the top 15 (and the first since 2013). She first appeared on the Hot 100 dated Aug. 16, 2008, with “Just Dance” (featuring Colby O’Donis), which became her first No. 1 in January 2009.

Man, I miss the original Lady Gaga! 🙁

    • Miguel September 20, 2016

She used to b a threat to bee

    • maurice September 20, 2016

I somewhat agree — her electro-pop was so unique and diverse at the time when the digital era really kicked off.

Now, she’s gone to a different direction, more artistic-like, in my honest opinion. If the album bombs, however, I’m sure she’ll be back to having her entire album produced by Red One.

I’m surprised that she wouldn’t use the one song she has with red one on the album as the lead single. All in all, I’m looking forward to her next effort.

  2. Steven September 20, 2016

Not surprised, the song sucks…. another flop era for gaga

  3. Sam September 20, 2016

And people were squawking that its no:1# on iTunes. iTunes isn’t the official chart

  4. SMH September 20, 2016

Still a great debut. Some artists nowadays can’t even get a top 20 hit without hype and gimmicks. Even with that they still can’t crack the top 10.

    • BEY>RIH September 20, 2016

Literally every major popgirl sold more first week than gaga and cracked the top ten or top 15. So who are you shading?

      • SMH September 21, 2016

Like I said, every other major pop girl used hype and gimmicks to crack the top 15. Learn how to read.

Poor dat, only 7 years into her career and she’s doing those numbers. I don’t think anything can save her at this point. Kunty Perry will suffer the same fate too when she releases her next album.

    • BuyGLORYONitunes September 20, 2016

Yeah I mean people come and go I guess. She should not have waited sooo long to release new material.

      • Dem Lessers September 20, 2016

You’re right, she shouldn’t have spaced her releases out the way she did after BTW. She got too cocky after BTW did good numbers despite mixed reviews, when she should’ve release around a year and a half after and let other people write songs for her because she was clearly running out of ideas after TFM. It’s sort of sad because she had the potential to be a music ledgend but fxuvked it up with her pretentiousness and self absorption.

Where is Britney Spears “Glory Hole” on the charts?

      • Dem Lessers September 20, 2016

Heffa, why you in my reply box?? With 20 years of being a leading artist in the industry and icon status, me and the rest of the Brit Army don’t need to prove anything. You keep celebrating your desperate fave making up lies on her husband to sell records tho. We’re unbothered.

      • BEY>RIH September 20, 2016

Sis glory-hole not make me squirt can be found on the charts. Hopefully gaga’s album won’t drop 80% its second week.

      • BEY>RIH September 20, 2016

        Nor*

  6. Terny September 20, 2016

And then she free falls to #59 next week… Ki

      Tbh

  7. M September 20, 2016

Sadly, I think #15 will probably be the range that this song peaks around. It’s currently in free-fall down the iTunes chart, and already out of the top 50 which isn’t exactly great for a song that’s not even 2 weeks old yet. And I don’t think this video is really going to be “epic” enough (at least in relation to the bar she’s set for herself with videos) to really save the song either.

At the end of the day, I just don’t think the song was that good to begin with. Hence the issue she’s having now. The song reminds me of an opened can of Coke that you left out for a few hours and then you went back to drink it and it was flat and blah. No fizzle, no excitement, just kinda blah. You can attach the coolest names in music to a track, but if it’s not good than it’s just not good.

Is it so difficult to outsell a Free Single aka Formation’s first week sales?

  9. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 September 20, 2016

Why do people want Gaga to fail so bad? I like the song & I’m looking forward to hear a more stripped down version of Gaga. Her vocals on this songs slays most of your favs with the exception of few!

  10. Weezy Tha Goat/ Zayn is ? September 20, 2016

15 is still really good. I’m not a big fan of the single choice but I want GaGa to make a comeback.

    • Molly #TheMostRelevantBitch September 20, 2016

#15 would be Really good for a Ciara,Tinashe, Jlo Sevyn etc… Even Selena songs debut in top 10.

      • Weezy Tha Goat/ Zayn is ? September 20, 2016

True but GaGa peaked too soon. She’s. it in her prime anymore so this is still good for her.

  11. dahell September 20, 2016

I really love Gaga but let’s be honest and admit this is her worst lead single ever. And I thinks its mostly because of the repetitive lyrics on it. I hope the album will be great and of course the Florence’s collaboration will smash.

  12. RihYonce September 20, 2016

Sorry to be off topic but my girl TEAIRRA MARI IS RELEASING HER EP IN NOVEMBER!!!! This girl is talented and glad she’s finally using LHHH to promote her music because she’s the only one who actually has talent in all of love & hip-hop. I want her to win so bad her music is going to be good that’s for sure ??

    • TROSE September 20, 2016

LOVE THIS SIS THX FOR UPDATE HER LAST MIXTAPE SINCERELY YOURS WAS EVERYHTING!!!!!

      • RihYonce September 21, 2016

You’re welcome! She said the EP will be midtempo with a 90s smooth R&B feel .

  13. RihYonce September 20, 2016

What ever happened to the music video ? Maybe that could possibly help. Even though the song is kind of forgettable she could’ve debuted it along with the video at the VMAs if she wanted to get a top 10 hit that’s dumb on whoever is in charge of her marketing team . Now there aren’t any relevant award shows coming up until the Grammys so idk how she could shake this

    • Onyourwrostday September 20, 2016

      Ama’s

  14. Kwinzy September 20, 2016

Like I said before… If Gaga’s team really want this Joanne era remotely survive they’d put out a promo/buzz single. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten tired of a song after only 5 listens…

  15. iSpeakTruthNoFallacy September 20, 2016

From a radio deal and multiple interviews to push its release to a repetitive catchy hook penned by Uptown Funk curator Mark Ronson, Perfect Illusion had all elements of the music industry formula for a smash hit. Sadly for Gaga such case isn’t so as this proves that it is indeed not easy to garner a #1 hit record especially as many like diminish its worth. This further proves my point that I have been exclaiming for so long now that pop music is officially dead and Lady Gaga is its murderer. Personally, I really enjoy Perfect Illusion as its a song I can get drunk to in a white club. Furthermore, I appreciate Gaga taking a risk with this song; it’s inventive and she tried which is what I deem to be important.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 21, 2016

And the conclusion you get to that Gaga killed pop keeps making zero sense.

  16. ! September 20, 2016

She’s the Avril Lavigne of this decade

Crazy 6 years ago Gaga was stomping on the likes of Rihanna, Bey, Katy, Onika etc… Now she can’t even keep up with Megan Trainor. ? The decline

    • #JACKIE September 20, 2016

      Kiiiiii

    • BEY>RIH September 20, 2016

Gaga was HUGE from 08-11, but bítch Bey, Frih, Katy, and Nicki were slaying during that time period. (IASF&Teenage Dream)

Payola will save it, her team must have planned something, they won’t make the same mistake they did with ArtPop + Gaga is very calculated, she loves fame and attention more than money.

    • JOHNVIDAL September 21, 2016

You are mistaking her with Madonna.

  21. Kyle September 20, 2016

Still pretty good debut! Idk why some of you are shading this debut that’s better than some of your faves lol..

  22. Chillitsjustpizza September 20, 2016
