Frank Ocean Ineligible For 2017 Grammys / TGJ Weighs-Up Why

Frank Ocean sent shockwaves throughout the music industry when he returned with visual LP ‘Endless’ and game-changing album ‘Blond’ following a four-year hiatus.

Unfortunately, those waves won’t be felt at the Grammys.

Find out why Ocean’s been flatlined below…

While both lauded projects were released in August (before the September 30th deadline), neither were submitted for the 2017 ceremony.

The move has surprised many, as the singer was billed as a front-runner alongside Adele, Beyonce, and Drake.

It’s also seen debate erupt as to why both projects were omitted.

We’re less surprised by ‘Endless,’ which has caused chaos in the major label system. Indeed, many will recall that Ocean used the “visual LP” to complete his deal with Universal Music, only to release his “true” sophomore set ‘Blond’ independently days later. Both roll-outs took place on Apple Music exclusively.

That move saw UMG’s head action an immediate end to streaming exclusives from Universal artists.

And with there being potential for legal ramifications, it’s not altogether odd for ‘Endless’ to have been left off the voting list.

The absence of ‘Blond,’ however, does raise eyebrows as it was serviced by Ocean himself.

Did his team, as some sources are saying, simply miss the deadline? If so, was it an oversight? Deliberate so as to make a statement? Or perhaps not in their power due to drama behind the scenes?

Who knows.

Despite the Grammy acknowledgement (or lack there of), both ‘Blond’ and ‘Endless’ are adorned with acclaim from critics for their sonically pleasing sound and vulnerable lyrics.

Surely, that – paired with the fact ‘Blond’ is third best selling album of the year – is a win in itself?

Your thoughts?

Maybe he feels rewarded from just the praise or just wants it to be about the music and not the accolades

  2. S****** Blonde October 18, 2016

Some people try to make good music just for the accolades, others just for the sake of it. The Grammys are not as respected as they once were, not by the public nor by real musicians. The event has turned into a competition between popular artists, in the 90’s artists like Taylor, Beyoncé and Drake wouldn’t have been nominated for album of the year, not even making a ‘Born to Run’ type of masterpiece, standards today are, let’s just say…different.

It’s not their fault that their competition is talentless and makes forgettable music. Adele, Taylor and Bey are the only mainstream artist who makes body of work and can sell millions.

      • Datredd23 October 18, 2016

You forgot Rihanna hun her album is almost 3x platinum. With or without streams Rihanna has already sold millions and was ahead of the pack in the digital age now she’s ahead of the pack in the streaming age

      • Danzou October 18, 2016

She said the competition is talent less then had the nerve to mention Taylor in the same breath. If we banking on talent for a grammy we may as well just leave the thread.

      • SMH October 19, 2016

You talk about talentless competition but mention Taylor and Beyonce?
        Your credibility is officially dead.

Some people like to live in the past. Nothing that the current artist do will satisfy them, no matter how good they are. I mean, we have all around performer like Bey who sings, dances and has an amazing visuals and artistic visions and yet she is still incomparable to the likes of Madonna, Whitney and Janet according to them. When in reality, she is much superior than them.

    • Heyyyyy Yaaaaa October 18, 2016

You’re totally delusional!! Bey cannot compare to Whitney or Madonna. It’s all about impact and depth of artistry. Bey has found her niche but she’ll never be that ‘unique”. Wait till a new artist comes out with a new unique psychedelic vibe that will shut everything down you’ll see what depth really is.

    • SMH October 19, 2016

Beyonce superior? Lmfao. Spoken like a truly delusional beyonce fan. Janet, Madonna, & Whitney have 3-4 decade legacies that are still influencing and giving birth to female recording artists. When beyonce can boast a 4 decade career, influence an entire generation of female pop stars, and finally stop struggling to compete/keep up with Rihanna, then you can talk. Until then, you might want to keep your delusions to yourself.

Anyways, is Coldplay eligible for AOTY? People seems to forget bout them.

I think he isnt worried about Grammy’s at this point in his career. Frank seems to be a different type of artist that just loves to release music. With that being said it helps him not to be oversaturated in the market.

  6. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 October 18, 2016

Honestly his album wasn’t all that, however I’m excited to see how “25, Lemonade, Views, and Anti” fair out once the nomination are finalized!

  7. Bish in Africa October 18, 2016

He clearly doesn’t give a 2cent about the Grammies

  8. Danzou October 18, 2016

He don’t care and he shouldn’t. The Grammy’s is for white people.

    • BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 October 18, 2016

Really? Is that why Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Jay-z, Michael Jackson rank among the MOST AWARDED artist in Grammy History. I swear people are soooooooooooo ignorant!

      • Danzou October 18, 2016

Yeah you stupid b**** because WHITE PEOPLE LIKE THEM DID YOU NOT HEAR WHAT THE F*** I JUST SAID! !!???? I didn’t SAY that only white people win I said that the grammys are for white people which they ARE. Go defend your oppressor somewhere else h**.

Maybe he will submit something from Blonde next year. Competition is thick this year!

    • Credits October 18, 2016

      ^^right.

  10. King B October 18, 2016

@datredd23 She’s ahead because she’s competing with the likes of Ariana, Ellie, Demi, Selena and Meghan. Notice how Beyoncé’s 2013 release can have a billion streams even though it was released one year later. I’m not going to mention her past albums that got 200- 600++ mil streams, which according to y’all are forgotten, no impact whatsoever. Furthermore, for the biggest superstar on Earth with 14 number ones singles, I would expect to have sales>streams. She’s not new. She’s a veteran like Bey who is still relevant and thus not selling a mil is considered tragic.

    • LOL October 19, 2016

LOL IF THAT’S TRAGIC THEN HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT DRUG DEALER’S S**** STILL NOT REACHING 20 MILLION TOTAL US ALBUMS SALES AFTER ALMOST 15 YEARS YET? LMAO AND DON’T BRING HER DESTINY’S MAIDS’ SALES INTO THIS, NOT HERE FOR BUG INFLATION LMAO.

  11. Heyyyyy Yaaaaa October 18, 2016

@datredd23 Rihanna has good hype music I’ll give her that but she’s not and will never be known for having some type of “body of work”. I’m sure she’s well aware of that..look how 4 5 seconds wasn’t hyped up the way Wirk was. People don’t take her seriously as a real artist and she’s knows it that’s why she had to sell s** and a very raunchy image(BBHMM-Work). Sorry you tried it! Now on the mainstream success she has that on lockdown I’ll give it to her!

  12. Thando October 18, 2016

Beyonce is more than Whitney and Madonna?!?! LOL LOL LMAO lol what do Beyonce’s worker bees smoke in that hive of theirs? Whatever it is, it’s some strong hashish. She’s a great performer but her entire discography is blown away by Whitney’s debut album, her entire discography is blown away by Ray of Light.

I agree with the above comment that musical quality is no longer what it was. Musical quality if objective I agree BUT the personnel who get a record deal is objective. Thus the view is correct because it seems as if anybody can get a deal these days because record companies want to mold “artists” to make money even though they have questionable talent. Just get someone s*** who can hold a note (eg Rihanna), and scout the most chart-friendly producers, songwriters etc.

In the last 10-15 years very few albums deserved the AOTY awards, and its getting worse. Nobody with even a feeble knowledge of music can tell me that Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in a key of Life” or Fleewood Mac’s “Romours” can be placed on same pedestal as Taylor Swift’s “1989”. So I agree, ever since post-Miseducation of Lauryn Hill the Grammys have been a popularity contest not a night when fellow musicians recognized the best efforts of their colleagues, and I don’t see that culture ever returning.

PS This Frank Ocean dude seems to not give a f*** about a whole lot of industry s***. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t submit intentionally LOL

  13. Ciah’s Turtle October 18, 2016

this album was grammy worthy any fxcking way

  14. dydy972 October 18, 2016

Blond does not need a grammy because it’s bigger than a grammy award. He provided sounds that people will talk about and rejoice for decades to come

    • LOL October 19, 2016

LOL DOUBT IT, THE SHYT HAS ALREADY PLUMMETED DOWN THE CHARTS AND IS ALREADY FORGOTTEN LOL

  15. Kwinzy October 18, 2016
