Chart Check [Billboard 200]: Lady Gaga Makes History With New #1 Album ‘Joanne’

As we reported here, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Lady Gaga is leading this week’s Billboard 200 with her quinary opus, ‘Joanne.’

Featuring hits ‘Million Reasons,’ ‘Perfect Illusion,’ and ‘A-Yo,’ the album – released October 21st – leapt right to the top of refreshed charts this week.  As the chart triumph comes as Gaga’s fifth run over the Billboard 200 (over four official LPs and a re-release), the ‘Applause’ singer may due a round of such for seeing her name penciled in history books for the feat.

Keen to find out why?  Tuck in below:

Via Billboard:

The album’s 201,000 launch is the fourth-largest debut of 2016, and the second-biggest for a woman. Ahead of it are Drake’s Views (1.04 million), Beyonce’sLemonade (653,000) and Frank Ocean’s Blonde (276,000 units).

Gaga is the first woman with four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in the 2010s. She passes Beyonce and Taylor Swift, each with three during the decade. Among all acts, Justin Bieber and Drake lead with six Billboard 200 No. 1’s each since 2010, while One Direction and Kanye West each boast four.

I’m not a huge Gaga fan but I’m so proud of her.

“Joanne” is the new…… “Bye, Felicia”!!!!

      • Arianator November 1, 2016

She is promoting Joanne like crazy but.. They say too many cooks spoil the broth and that might just be the case with the latest single from Lady Gaga, which had a helping hand from a roster of superstar songwriters and producers, including Mark Ronson and our very own Kevin Parker. As Gaga recently revealed, Parker, whom the pop superstar called a “musical genius”, came up with the original concept for ‘Perfect Illusion’, which was then given the pop machine treatment by Ronson and BloodPop, with guitar courtesy of QOTSA’s Josh Homme. Ronson has of course manned the boards for the likes of Amy Winehouse and for his own string of star collaborations, such as ‘Uptown Funk’, which was a smash around the world, whilst BloodPop is perhaps best known for producing for the likes of Justin Bieber. With all of this musical muscle, you’d think ‘Perfect Illusion’ would be breaking chart records around the world, but reception to Gaga’s comeback single has been relatively lukewarm on the critical front and even more so on the charts. As critics continue to ponder that strange affected accent the singer puts on in the chorus, which turns ‘love’ into ‘la-a-a-v’, the song has failed to make much of an impact on the international pop charts. It’s done alright in France, where it debuted at the top of the French Singles Chart. But it’s probably worth noting that the French have relatively low standards for a Number 1 single – ‘Perfect Illusion’ sold just 2,820 copies there. Expect more discounts pretty soon.

#1 in 5 countries. When your songs flop and disappear from Billboard Hot 100 the week your album came out, you sold them for $0.69 cents and $3.99 on Amazon.

Lady Gaga just seems… boring. The arbiters of think-piece material don’t seem to care about her anymore, and even more worryingly, nor do the social pages and gossip blogs. She’s fading into a “meh”-ness that goes against her whole body of work. Here are a few reasons why:

        1)Her videos are boring.
        2)She’s sort of normal now.
3)HER ART/MUSIC HAS BECOME BANAL SENSATIONALISM
        4)HER MYSTERY HAS GONE.
5)GAGA AND HER RECORD COMPANY SEEM DESPERATE.

WW sales: Madonna, Rebel Heart 315,000 (debut).

WW sales: Lady Gaga, Joanne 314,000 (debut).

Call her flop all you want but she’s still slaying. Congrats to her!!! She accomplished a lot within her 8 year career

    • Fixed November 1, 2016

200k from the US sales. 100k around the globe.

Yes, it is not doing well at all.

      Try Adele’s 25 sales

    • LemonadeTeaBag November 1, 2016

That awkward moment when Monsters are celebrating her 170k pure sales.

      Bye gurl…. 😀

    Lame accomplishment but ok.

    • ERICA November 1, 2016

We’ll see if Flopanne can keep its sales as it’s tumbled from the top 10 all over the world.

In the UK it peaked at 3 and is now at 14, ouch!!!, and all of the singles have flopped, a big fall from glory, still it’s good news that fans buying multiple copies have secured a US number one, sadly it doesn’t give a clear reflection sales, but other artists just sell one copy per time, also Amazon had it for sale for 3.99, which no other artist did, shame she can’t just sell fairly like her peers like Beyonce, Adele or Ariana..globally.

She is now a local artist.

  4. cocobutta November 1, 2016

Cool for her that she went just over the 200,000 mark.

Good for her that she’s not one dimensional musically

  5. HailLegendBeysus November 1, 2016

    Congrats to her!

  6. Meme November 1, 2016

They hate on her but I commend her for taking risk. She could easily do the same formula over and over and over like Beyoncé does and play in the safe zone, but instead she pushed her creative ability. Beyoncé is the only artist that gets a pass for giving us the same performance format, same sound, and same wardrobe from single ladies was release in 2009. Beyoncé literally shows no growth between 2009-2016.

    • Haters Gon’ Hate November 1, 2016

Beyoncé – no musical growth? When did she attempt Country on her previous offerings? When did she tackle the media obsession with her and make a pro black song in her previous offerings? How is the album “4” sonically similar to tracks like “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and Lemonade overall? You are literally pressed liked a heavy flow sanitary towel on day one. Sit down.

      • Meme November 1, 2016

lol at y’all making it a big deal that Beyoncé made a pro black song, SHE IS BLACK. And secondly, formation had 1 simple line that reference the Jackson 5, all of the other lyric were a bunch of hot mess. And let’s be honest she only used the mothers of the movement/pro black to promote her era. She’s an opportunist. She clings to whatever is popular when it’s convenient for her. I would have preferred her to be pro black when she wasn’t releasing an album.

      • Fresj November 1, 2016

This coming from a Gaga stan? The queen of gimmick generic based music? Lady Gaga is the one who hasnt shown any musical growth between her debut and now, sans the jazz album. If anything musically Gaga regressed.Joanne is without a doubt her worst album yet! I dont know why Gaga fans keep trying to come for Beyonce, they simply arent on the same level. One is on the way to legend status, while the other is just lucky to still have a fanbase.Beyonce was bailing out alot of the black Baltimore protesters, while alot of people were just paying online lip service. So how is formation a gimmick or pandering? You sound stupid and pressed Some of you blacks will sit and demean all of the black artist and in the same breath put white artist on a pedestal.Just ?…

Instead it just went on about Formation! LMFAOOOOO!!!

    • Meme November 1, 2016

I went on and on about formation because…well formation was the closest thing to even a slight hit. Rihanna non single S** with me was more rated than Beyoncé 1st single lol. Took a whole HBO national premiere and still couldn’t get a hit. Chile bye

      • HailLegendBeysus November 1, 2016

Your comment and the reply had nothing to do with singles. But how Beyoncé albums sound sonically similar to one another for you to come up with the conclusion that she’s shown no artistic growth since since 2009.
        .
But we see how you couldn’t answer the question so you jumped on a rant about Formation and then continued to turn the conversation by jumping on about singles ???
        .
But we could careless about singles because Beyoncé is the Hit and it clearly shows! Her album and tour is sold! Frihanna on the other hand couldn’t do either of the two with a hit! ?

  8. Rosie November 1, 2016

What happened to #Navyexit or whatever lmao? They ran back in here and been hiding behind Gaga for the past week or so to try to get their kiis in since Beyoncé stomped on IG Model in every department.

Congrats, I was wrong about its success in the US. The second week drop is around 75% instead of 80+, so it’s holding up a bit better than usual. Unfortunately it’s bombing worldwide.

    • HailLegendBeysus November 1, 2016

They never left, which is why all these random troll accounts popped up in their absent, but miraculously disappeared when they returned. ???

    • JOHNVIDAL November 2, 2016

Rosie girl, how many times have you listened to the album already? 🙂 I know you love it. It´s your kind of music. Wasn´t she going to do less than 100k? Wasn´t Michael Buble going to outsell her first week? Too many questions. I´ve seen it is doing way better than Michael on itunes now in second week too (although you are the real expert on Gaga not me, so correct me if I´m wrong 🙂 🙂 :)).

  9. LOL November 1, 2016

Your album… as the same price as a Mc Chicken and a bag of Doritos.

    🙁

  10. Lakeesha November 1, 2016

It’s flopping right down charts now and in Europe which is outside the US its’ just a disaster flop!

  11. JOHNVIDAL November 1, 2016

100k sales worldwide..nothing to be proud off. A disaster.

  12. Danzou November 1, 2016

TranAnne won’t go anywhere but if it does I’ll be surprised. I can see it going gold honestly but the album is still crap. Better than fartpop but still crap.

  13. Snf November 1, 2016

    Oooo y’all mad ???

  14. Lake Erie November 1, 2016

Gone head Gaga! The haters are definitely pressed I see. SMh. Gots to give credit where it’s due. No gimmicks.

  15. lalalalaaaa November 1, 2016

Just okay sales. I expect 350-500k after that 3.99 discount on Amazon. Of course she is promoting it like currrayyzeee…nothing to be proud of.

I doubt it is going to get a Gold status before SuperBowl.

  16. LemonadeTeaBag November 1, 2016

Monsters are celebrating her 200k sales on Billboard 200? OMG…

    😆 😆 😆

  17. ZZZ November 1, 2016

    • Ihaterihanna November 6, 2016

But anti stayed in the top 5 longer and had a #1 single. Lady Gargoyle won’t see it

  19. @ASAPicon November 2, 2016

I wonder how she will tour and perform the songs from the album… i had such a great time at the artpop ball, that the new sound she has is so different, Im not sure id enjoy a show with those tracks being performed as much as I enjoyed Artpop Album & tour.

  20. King B November 2, 2016

For her standard, it’s doing alright. Depends. If she didn’t tumbling out of top ten in the next 4-5 weeks, then its doing better than expected. As for the Navy, instead of commenting about album quality, y’all shud just listen to S** With Me or S&M.

  21. YOLO BNE November 2, 2016

Some folks on here scared to accept they thought joanne was gonna tank and it didnt. Not saying its anything groundbreaking but its doing well yall need ti stop bluffing. Get with it you h***. Stupid ass haters

S** with me is a good quality song just because the lyrics is hot does not mean is not quality.

Congrats Gaga. I start to enjoy the album after few listening but i know it won’t last a month just like artpop did with me.

  24. Blue Ivy Rod November 2, 2016

BEAT Rih in every department but yet her album has yet to be seen in the top 20. TWO smash hit singles, opening numbers of a million then gave away those copies to fans as a giveaway then selling another 1.5 million and garnering over billion streams? How is that a flop?

    • Ihaterihanna November 6, 2016

  26. Jasmine November 2, 2016

I would be happy for her if she was not so thirsty. It is not fair to compare album sales between Lady Gaga and Beyonce, Taylor Swift, or Adele because the latter are not so thirsty that they have to discount their albums to $1 dollar for their albums to sell. Gaga’s latest album was sold for $3 bucks. Nobody slashes prices that low unless they are thirsty, ie desperate, for sales. When Gaga stops acting so desperate and has a successful album without gimmicks or desperate price slashes then I will give her props but for now her thirstiness prevents me from congratulating her on a number 1 album because I feel she cheated to get it.
