If you thought the 350-400k The Weeknd‘s new album, ‘Starboy’ was set to top the Billboard 200 with next week was something to gawk at you’ll be even more impressed by his Spotify streaming figures.

That’s right, the ‘Earned It’ crooner has earned a new spot in digital history books as he’s dethroned pop prince/fellow Canadian crooner Justin Bieber‘s one-day streaming record.  To put this into context, Bieber’s latest album, ‘Purpose,’ was streamed over 36 million times from November 13 to November 14th, 2015.

The anticipation for ‘Starboy’ has exceeded that:

Via EW:

“Spotify’s continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming,” Monte Lipman, chairman and co-founder of Republic Records, wrote in a statement.

Starboy was released debuted Nov. 25 via Republic Records, just a day after he debuted a short film called Mania featuring most of the album’s new music. By Saturday, he broke the streaming record.

While we await the official figure, just the magnitude of that level of interest from consumers is sure to help The Weeknd exceed his initial 400k prediction.

I thought Drake Stoll held the title for that. Some of these streaming records and numbers seem shady just to get people to listen

the streaming numbers that are most often released by Spotify and Apple Music are balloon figures. the numbers do not at all represent the true and accurate streams for a particular artist, album or song. these stats are released to BRAINWASH the mainstream listener into believing that “everyone around them” is listening to music that they themselves “need to listen to too in order to not be left out”. this is how marketing operates. if a consumer can be made to feel like EVERYONE ELSE is listening to something or using a certain product, or buying a certain brand, it can encourage that sole individual to jump on the bandwagon. so, by exaggerating streaming numbers to this degree, real people will actually long on to stream — therefore creating REAL numbers that come close to reaching the false/marketing ploy stats.

      Straight Facts!

and while I certainly LIKE “the Weeknd”, this particular album is NOT good. anyone who has supreme musical taste, especially in the contemporary landscape of our music industry, will honestly attest to this album being sub par. this isnt a matter of opinion. FACTUALLY, this album simply does not reflect the growth of this particular artist — and actually pales in comparison to his previous work.

His album is ok. But I guess hype is what sells records nowadays, not the music.
