Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week In 1998 #FBF

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we say “hello” to ‘Goodbye’ by 90s pop group The Spice Girls.  The first single the group ever released as a quartet (post the departure of “Ginger Spice” Geri Halliwel), the fab foursome stormed the Hot 100 this week with an impressive #11 premiere of the pop ballad.  A gem found on the group’s third album, ‘Forever,’ ‘Goodbye’ may have been greeted with fanfare following the hoopla of Geri’s exit, but that favorable response was short-lived.  Going on to be the Girls’ last top 20 run (to date) on the Hot 100, the tune peaked at the same position it debuted.  Yet, despite its short run in the upper rankings of the Billboard singles chart, it endures nearly two decades after its release as a fan favorite of the group’s list of colossal hits.

A timely ode as this week saw pop’s currently reigning girl group, Fifth Harmony, become 4th Harmony (for lack of better terms), tuck in below to remember the time in 1998 when the Girls said goodbye to Ginger…

Brandy, Britney Spears, Monica, Cher, TLC, Destiny’s Child & Christina Aguilera would go on to dominate the #1 spot for the first half of ’99.

LOL YOu know the sate of mainstream music is bad when even a Spice Girls song sounds kind of good compared to most songs now. I loved so many songs from that girl Jewel btw. It´s fun looking at these past lists and seeing her there cause she seems to have been totally forgotten. But she had such god songs during that time. Of course nowadays it would be impossible for anyone to chart with taht type of “slow” and quality material.
Also, R Kelly´s best song, Shania, Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow… and then Lauryn Hill and all the black girls. And teh groups! Real diversity and quality.

  8. THE REAL December 24, 2016

Wow. Such an impressive list of hits. 1998 really was a golden age time period in pop music.
