It’s that time of year again!

Indeed, the air is still buzzing as today brought with it the highly anticipated 2017 Grammy nominations unveiled, per usual, via an announcement special weeks before the actual showing.  But, what also comes with the ‘per usual’ announcement are the jaw-dropping surprises, snubs, and all out “shut-outs” that accompany the annual spectacle.

Always a heated debate-starter, the coveted tally saw the likes of Zayn Malik, Janet Jackson, Future, Nick Jonas, and more all go without mention while others, some fans believe, weren’t mentioned in the correct categories.

In the meantime, tuck in below for our list of 2017’s Grammy surprises and snubs:

beyonce-thatgrapejuice-snubs-2017

Surprise:  The leading nominees are all artists of color (Beyonce – 9, Drake – 8, Kanye West – 8, Rihanna – 8, Chance the Rapper – 7)

Surprise:  Justin Bieber – normally shunned by the academy – receives multiple nominations across major categories (including ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’)

Snub:  Nick Jonas & Zayn Malik shut out completely

Surprise:  Chance the Rapper wows with historic 7 nominations for his stream-only album, ‘Coloring Book,’ including ‘Best New Artist.’

Snub:  Zayn Malik (who was technically ineligible due to his stint with One Direction) and Alessia Cara omitted from ‘Best New Artist’ category

ttttt

Surprise:  R&B’s new(er) kids – Tory Lanez, Bryston Tiller, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ro James, PARTYNEXTDOOR – all nab nods

Snub:  R&B’s bigger names – Chris Brown, Monica, Usher, and Alicia Keys – all shut out

Surprise:  Beyonce nominated in ‘Best Rock Performance’ for ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ and Rihanna’s ‘Kiss It Better’ nominated in R&B song category

Snub:  Legendary shut out – Janet Jackson (0 nods) / David Bowie (shut out of major categories)

drake-kanye-west-640x480

Surprise:  Kanye nabs 8 Grammy nods despite history of consistently shading the Grammys

Snub:  Drake‘s ‘One Dance’ (easily the song of the summer) completely omitted while his ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ co-star, Future, also completely shut out from nods.

Surprise:  Solange‘s ‘Cranes in the Sky’ nabs R&B nod

Snub:  ‘Cranes in the Sky’s parent album, ‘A Seat At the Table,’ released on September 30th, 2016 (in time to be nominated this year), was omitted from nominations.  Due to the date of its release, it is most likely ineligible for 2018 nomination.

Janet snubbed just like Whitney was in 2009 smh. Some of these nominations really surprise me. What makes Beyoncé a Grammy favorite? They really love her. I’m surprised Rihanna got so many nominations.

    • Kris December 6, 2016

Because Beyoncé is the GRAMMYs and is the only star we have that does it all and delivers quality work…

      • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~ Tyler December 6, 2016

Okay ladies now let’s get inFORMATION!
Prove to me you got some coordination!
Slay trick or you get eLEMONADEd #BARS ?????

      • #ispeakfacts December 6, 2016

        @Kris

And that is why the music industry is so fked up! We have no future whitneys, mj, prince, etc. Ppl is so hung up on star power they forget about its about the music! As much as I respect Beyonce her lemonade album was not that great… the music was no better then Rhianna’s album. The only difference is she hid the music with a musical film… instead of ppl focusing on the music they focus on the visual. Great way to sell an album but the music is still basic! Adele definitely deserves album of the year and but Bey does deserve best video and music performance!

    • ? December 6, 2016

      Lemonade is overrated as hell

    • ? December 6, 2016

Seat at the table >>>>>>>>>> Lemon water

    • ariana December 7, 2016

gonna be the last Grammy for black artists.
      Longlive Trump!

  2. truthtea December 6, 2016

Im just here for Adele snatching every b*tches weave!

    • Kris December 6, 2016

Girl… the most overhyped artist of the 21st century… Hello and 25 was not that great. Mediocre to be exact

  3. RealNegro December 6, 2016

Seems fair to me. The Grammys got it right. Album of the Year is between Adele and Beyonce and not Bowie and Radio head.

  4. Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

The only sub is Anti not getting AOTY. The rest are fine in my book. Britney, Gag Gag and Katy all flopped. I don’t even remember Nicki nor Zayn’s songs. The only surprise is that Mya got a R&B album slot. Didn’t know she released an album.
    .
Anyway, Anti won’t win Best Urban Album because Minutemaid is nom and it’s up for AOYT, if it’s in the top 5 albums, then it will win the smaller albums cats. Other than Monica not getting one for Code Red, the other “big” R&B singers can kick rocks. I’m proud the the artist with the most noms are Black.

    • Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

Your petty shade aside…MIND OF MINE BY ZAYN IS FAR BETTER THAN PURPOSE. The boy can actually sing and has a bit of soul in his voice. I loved that album.

      • Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

It put me to sleep. So far he’s a one hit wonder.

    • Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

Stop focusing on the hit….THE MUSIC WAS GOOD AND FAR BETTER THAN PURPOSE. ZAYN IS A VERY GOOOD ‘STUDIO’ SINGER. HE DELIVERED BETTER VOCALS THAN JUSTIN.

    • HiJamon December 6, 2016

She has a good chance of winning. She lost to Pharell last time, and everyone thought she was going to get album of the year. Plus Rihanna is nominated in the R&B song categories, while Beyonce didn’t receive a nomination, which is surprising, since she always gets nominated in that field.

  5. Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~ Tyler December 6, 2016

Samsung be like:”Hello! Welcome to Samsung customer service , how may I help you?”

Rihanna be like:”So yall can buy me a platinum certification but not a Grammy AOTY nom?

    • Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

Rihanna still on the pea sized brain?

      • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~ Tyler December 6, 2016

Your fave’s album didn’t make the cut! Don’t be mad cause you can’t sit with us. Get over it hahaha ?

      • Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

Yet you’re the one posting comments about it. With made up conversations in your head, there’s a word for that, delusional. 🙂

      • Amerikkka’s Most Wanted ~ Tyler December 6, 2016

Stfu and get your mouth off of this d*** b****! Btw how does it taste ?

  6. Kitteneyez December 6, 2016

F*** the f***** up grammy committee for snubbing Chris Brown Usher Britney & Selena ?

  7. Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

Blackstar blew up the day he passed that just happend to be the same as the forst week of release. Icon? Sure, but stop the fakeness. Same with Price, you guys didn’t buy any of his newer releases.

  8. Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

Someone trying to milk this because he knows in a few days it’s back to 20 comments a post at the most.

    • Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

I know right…..i can see what they are doing..LMAO. EVERYBODY HAS TO EAT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. NOT U CLOCKING THEIR TEA…

      • Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

lol, it’s obvious. Strike while the iron is hot I guess.

    • Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

U CAN’T BLAME THEM…BUT ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS. THEY WANT THAT ‘CAKE CAKE CAKE……….’

  9. La Perra December 6, 2016

Rihanna definitely deserved Album Of The Year in my opinion for Anti. Aleesa Cara not being nominated is definitely a snub.
Alright for the people of color dominating and producing great material and entertaining the masses. This year was definitely a trifecta between Bey, Rih, and Aubrey.

    • LOL December 6, 2016

LOL. Deserved? LMFAO. Please take several seats.

  10. Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

I am bummed..A SEAT THE TABLE did not get more nominations. THAT ALBUM WAS AMAZING, MAYBE IF SHE RELEASED IT EARLIER, IT WOULD HAVE GOTTEN MORE NOTICE FROM THE GRAMMYS. THAT ALBUM WAS AMAZING AND I HOPE IT WINS BEST R&B PERFORMANCE…..IT DESERVES IT BETTER THAN THE OTHER NOMINEES.

  11. Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

What would S****** be nominated for?? BEST ROBOTIC PERFORMANCE, BEST CHIPMUNK IMITATION OR BEST ‘LIVE’ VOCALS??? I’M CONFUSED..

  12. Mark111 /.\ December 6, 2016

I’m not even hating on Kool-Aid, it’s where it should be. It’s Views that I disagree with. JB had some hits on his album I guess, but at least tried something different for him. Drake has no growth, then again, I never heard the album more than twice.

    • Surprise..(DEC 2013) December 6, 2016

Agreed…VIEWS FROM THE A*** is trash…i was hoping chance would get that spot. Again, having hits does not determine if an album is good or not sis. JB had hits, but his album was trash……A SEAT AT THE TABLE SHOULD HAVE REPLACED IT

  13. East African girl December 6, 2016

Hey Samantha, it’s immature to celebrate coz AOTY in Reality Random white dude or Becky is going to WIN #facts

  14. kwinzy December 6, 2016

I’m pulling for the underdogs Solo, Chance & Fat Joe/Remy to cop they well deserved grammys.

  15. Ms.. Lilli December 6, 2016

Y’all forgot about Mya’s album #Smoovejones being nominated for best rnb album category as a surprise.

  16. IStan4Rihanna. December 6, 2016

Rihanna received “8” nominations altogether, and the second most nominations of the night.

    .

Technically speaking, you could argue that she was “snubbed” for ‘Album of the Year’, but I always knew there was a chance that she wouldn’t receive a nomination.

    .

She’s absolutely fine. The real snubs go to Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Fifth Harmony, ZAYN etc.

    • King B December 7, 2016

I think those artists deserved to get snubbed.Theres nothing groundbreaking on their record.

  17. Kiii December 6, 2016

Besides Adelle & Bey, the pop category is a straight mess. The pop category always allows these artists with trash albums & no aristry to get nominated, it sad

    • JOHNVIDAL December 7, 2016

Yes teh rest of the nominees are terrible.

  18. Roc December 7, 2016

Anti, A Seat at the table >>>> Lemonade

  19. @ASAPicon December 7, 2016

Wow, Rooting for MYA! And Remy Ma! Those were shockers

  20. King B December 7, 2016

There’s nothing surprising about This Is Acting. After listening to the album, I was sure that the album will nominated for Best Pop Vocal categories. However, she was indeed snubbed in the main categories. I thought Cheap Thrill has a chance for SOTY or ROTY and the album for AOTY. Demi Lovato get nominated however, really surprised me! This put her above the other Disney artist like Selena. And congrats to Kelly Clarkson! More than a decade later and still competing with the newbies.

  21. King B December 7, 2016

If 1989 can win, Purpose has the chance too

  22. Thando December 7, 2016

    “Hello, its me….”
For once I’m going to stay up late and watch these grammy awards (hopefully I don’t fall asleep at work the next day) and then I’m gonna come and read the comments on this blog to watch what’s next in the Rihanna’s beehive VS Beyonce’s beehive saga. The comment’s section will be sheer ENTERTAINMENT as always LOL! You guys are so invested in this I cannot wait for February. Looooooolll in fact I look forward more to the comments than the awards themselves.

  23. GurlWepa1989 December 7, 2016

Beyonce nominated in Rock?!?! Seriously, that’s a biggest BS ever, just because it features Jack White does not make it Rock. Kanye was so right about her!! Anyway, Adele will slay the sour Lemonade.

  24. Jon December 7, 2016

I, at the very least, expected a Best Pop/R&B Vocal Performance nomination for Usher’s “Crash”.

    • JOHNVIDAL December 7, 2016

Thankfully it didn´t come. He´s been nominated more than enough throughout the years for mediocre releases, while other R&B artists (or pop) never, absolutely never get nominated (Mariah Carey for example).

      • Jon December 7, 2016

Mediocre releases? And you’re going to allude to Mariah’s most recent releases not being ‘mediocre’? Usher may not be doing as well as he used to but at least there are still hits – and that’s with good reason. The guy has talent. The guy can sing.

  25. TheBeysusImpact December 7, 2016

    ANTI-GrammyWorthy….

  26. cocobutta December 7, 2016

Well the most surprise I got was seeing MYA grace the nominations.
As much as I enjoy certain songs on Code Red it wasn’t a grammy worthy album for me.

Think Ushers song Tell Me is one of the best R&B vocals this year and my girls Anchor.
Though honestly I’m surprised Needed Me is in as that song is much a do about nothing track and vocals wise.
One Dance ROBBED and so was Alessa Cara.

  27. BarrzOverEverything December 7, 2016

Happy to hear Mya received a nomination, her smoove Jones mixtape, album, or whatever it is, Was actually really good, if your into smooth r&b, Mya’s voice is incredibly refreshing.

  28. Y’all Poor AF December 7, 2016

A Seat at the arable could’ve gotten nominated for Best R&B Album too and Cranes could’ve nabbed a Best R&B Song nomination. Monica, Usher, Alicia and Maxwell didn’t deserve anything for their albums. I’m actually surprised Closer isn’t nominated for Record of the Year and that One Dance got completely shut out everywhere even tho I hate that song. Make Me was cute but didn’t deserve anything and Perfect Illusion could’ve gotten a Best Pop Solo Performance nod. ANTI is NOT worthy of AOTY when every other album nominated sold its US’ sales total in the first week. Half of the album is completely fillers, the only really good songs are Work, Needed Me, Kiss It Better, Love on the Brain, S** with Me, Woo and Desperado. Views was trash, only had like 7-8 good songs, Coloring Book should’ve been the rap/hip-hop album to be nominated for AOTY. 5H definitely deserved a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nod for Work From Home. Ariana’s nominations aren’t deserving at all. Sia’s definitely are and her team should’ve pushed Alive more because that song could’ve been a top Record of the Year and Pop Solo Performance contender. More than likely that random white man will win AOTY

  29. Torrance December 7, 2016

All I know is Fantasia got nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance and might just snatch that trophy!!!!

LOL! The last of the GREAT singers….smh

She in good company with Jill and Lalah.

  30. Smoove Jones December 8, 2016

Biggest surprise is Mya. Totally unexpected but long overdue and well deserved.

    • Junior in Jamaica December 8, 2016

I am sooooooooo happy for her!

  31. Junior in Jamaica December 8, 2016

Can we talk about how HAPPY I am for MYA and her “Smoove Jones”? That Independent hustle finally paying off!!

    That’s MY GIRL!!
