Backlash: Shirley Caesar Under Fire For Defending Kim Burrell & Slamming Gay Marriage

Legendary ‘Hold My Mule’ hitmaker Shirley Caesar probably should’ve held her tongue if the fiery backlash that ensued after her vocal support of fellow gospel songstress, Kim Burrell, is anything to judge by.

The Grammy winning gospel pioneer – who was the center of the late 2016 viral #Unameit challenge – is seeing her name fly atop headlines for not only condoning Burrell’s highly publicized, anti-LGBT sermon but even going so far as to slam Pres. Obama for the legalization of gay marriage.

She may have served us beans, greens, potatoes, and tomatoes over the holidays, but now Twitter is serving her something else.  See it all below:

Lord knows they are about drag pastor Caesar. Y’all know she is old and her heart may not be able to take this lasting she’s about to get. She might be 2017s first victim

    • LISA LEVINE January 5, 2017

Listen ladies, gays, straights etc… 2016 spew so much hate, Trumps racist following, glass ceiling, low self-esteem on our black kids, and now “OUR” black churches attack the gay community. Hate, its all Hate. They are successfully turning us against each other. Both ladies are OVER-WEIGHT, how would they like it if a Preacher said, IF YOUR FAT YOUR GOING TO HELL AND DIE. Tell these old school B_itches to have SEVERAL SEATS and STFU.

      • XoMoDe January 5, 2017

You have the audacity to speak on hate, then throw out comments about physical appearance (i.e. them being overweight.) So, really, it’s all bets off. If you can hate, then they can hate. People kill me resorting to name calling, after the other person was being disrespectful first, and thinking it was a justified reaction…while still having the gall to still be sanctimonious. All you just did was expose that you were already looking down on the other person for whatever reason, and was waiting for the first opportunity to use it to lash out, and are really no better a person than they are. And being overweight isn’t cited as a sin, but homosexuality, on the other hand…

  2. Elsie January 5, 2017

Well I been heard rumors about ms Caesar salad being lesbian

  3. ShakaZulu January 5, 2017

Who cares…They ain’t the only ones who don’t care for gays let’s just move on…

    • Lana Del Fan January 5, 2017

The Bible should’ve stayed in year 100 when it was published (I don’t know what year it came out).

      • truthteller January 5, 2017

Perhaps you should tell that to your fave who identifies as a Catholic.

  4. XYZ January 5, 2017

I wonder what all those people expect from closeminded religious singers…they are some religious weirdos who are making the world the way a book tells them

    • truthteller January 5, 2017

Except that “book” as you refer to it actually says (at least in the New Testament) to love others and be tolerant. Plenty of religious people have free will you know.

      • XYZ January 5, 2017

And on the other hand the book preaches so much hate. That’s the tricky thing about religion. While it preaches some kind of love and togetherness, it only recommends it for the people who are just like you, or are living the way the book/religion tells people to. All of the others, that are not living as it is told, can be hated, suppressed and be treated like s***

      • truthteller January 5, 2017

Really? I’m no bible expert but I must have missed the part in the New Testament where Jesus preached hate or supressing others

  5. Molly #Stargirl January 5, 2017

    Lol

  6. Jasmine January 5, 2017

So these gospel divas get hardly any attention by national media, but now all of a sudden they say something ANTI-LGBT-AGENDA and they get a bunch of attention. Seems like the lgbt is giving them more attention than they need. Whatever happened to being above hate? When you are above hate you do not let negativity affect you. People should treat this like water off a duck’s back. There are much more important things to tackle like the economy’s improvement, jobs, foreign affairs, and keeping Trump in check than this nonsense.

  7. IG: @mixedboy January 5, 2017

It’s not always about “who cares” or “move on”. That’s been the problem for all these years. These bible thumping people have been using “scripture” to ostracize countless folk for years and years and years. ENOUGH! We’re not putting up with it anymore. Shirley Caeser, Burrell or whomever else can get it. BTW I always thought Shirley was a lesbian. No!?

    • Jasmine January 5, 2017

Only weak people would really be bothered this. Someone’s words should not have that much affect on you.

      • XYZ January 5, 2017

But someone’s word has always suppressed the LGBT community. People become (rightfully) angry when somebody uses the word n****. But all of a sudden they should be ok when these dumbfucks are calling out the LGBT community? This community fought hard for their rights, they fought hard to be treated like normal human beings. They weren’t allowed to love or moreover show their love just because those religious people felt awkward bout it and forbid it. So I’m totally getting why they are freaking out.

      • Jasmine January 5, 2017

XYZ if you think black people are not still called n***** then you are mistaken. At the end the day we still have to brush it off and live life. The same for the LGBT. It’s okay to get upset if someone’s words are against your agenda but let’s not lose sight of what is really important. There are still way more important things for the LGBT to handle than giving these people a national platform they don’t deserve.

    • Terry January 5, 2017

REALLY!? No one owes PEOPLE who happen to be gay anything but respect as a person!

In the Bible homosexuality is seen as UNATURAL! S** was designed between man and woman to make gee let me think MORE PEOPLE! So anything to the contrary is unatural!

The only judge is God so I think everyone should just let Him do the judging. We just owe everyone respect. We do not have to like or agree with the behavior.

      • Nique January 5, 2017

        This.

  8. Fancy BISH January 5, 2017

I ‘m so tired of some of these entitled Christians thinking they have an instant gratification card to Heaven…SCREAMING! Kim Bottom Of The Burrell and Shirley Caesar Dressing put their pants on one leg at a time like everyone else! And they put their hair on one wig at a time! So glad they are exposing their stupidity! I support Ellen’s decision…Ellen said HELL NO like Sofia on Color Purple lol…and if Miss Kim doesn’t get her act together, she will be doing meet and greets at the swap meet soon…and singing at Piggly Wiggly!

  9. Credits January 5, 2017

Is this the entire video? Is she telling Kim Burrell that she should have said it 4 years ago? Sounds like some shade, like b*tch you’re late! Lol–not that I condone these messages. She just wants some press.

  10. Kiii January 5, 2017

Good. People who think like Kim and Shirley need to be dragged for being so hateful.

    • Jasmine January 5, 2017

No they don’t. These two were in their own churches and they can say what they want. Someone in the audience recorded this and posted this online. People that are “dragged” have gone on social media and started something but in both cases it was the LGBT people starting social media wars against women whose message was only intended for their home congregation.

  11. Wonder Woman January 5, 2017

    @Donzou come get your gran

  12. FASHION_ICON ~ Anti&Lemonade January 5, 2017

I think everybody should be able to express their point of view…if Lgbt people want to be seen equal to straight people they have to accept being criticized. Because why gay people can give their opinion on straight and not the opposite ?
I know lgbt people endurered hating crimes since ever…but thats not something that gonna stop tomorrow. The day gay people will accept being criticize and will not care, that day they will stop justifiying themselves and stop the “victim card” and actually live their lives.. and knowing they have the law by their side. Homophobism will reduce

    • RCR81 January 5, 2017

Ummmmm this isn’t an opinion – It’s hateful abuse! People have accepted Homosexuality but they don’t have to agree with it (and this is fine!).However, some Christians (and others) think they have a divine right to abuse others and this is NOT OK

      • XoMoDe January 5, 2017

Who did these women abuse? They stated their opinion. No gay person died, was sent to the ER or lost a dollar from their bank account because Burrell and Caeser decided to say how they felt. Too many in the gay community are big ass babies, want the world to coddle them and act like the walls are caving in on them when they run into someone who even looks at them sideways. Grow the hell up, you overgrown toddlers. No one has to like you, or even pretend to. Playing the victim isn’t compelling, it’s annoying. Keep it up though. The overblown, hypersensitive and unnecessary reaction just compels more people to side against you on these issues.

  13. Reign January 5, 2017

Everyone has the freedom to express their RELIGIOUS view. Funny that all the people pressed are the ones who scream ‘pro-freedom of expression, liberation’ but can’t handle it when a black woman expresses her own belief.
If you don’t like it, simply don’t listen to it!

    • xedos January 5, 2017

but you cannot scream fire in a movie theater when their is no fire. How are you going to hate on one set of people, but get mad when the KKK hate on you? If they have right to bash gays ,then the KKK should have right to spew their hate also. hate is hate .

      • XoMoDe January 5, 2017

F*** the KKK. Every person of color should be real enough to know that the KKK is going to say what they say in their circles, and that crying about it won’t stop them. It’ll just embolden them, because now you made it obvious how much power their words have over you. Just reconcile that there isn’t anything you can do about their opinions and mouths, stay away from that circle, and you’ll be good.

      • Terry January 5, 2017

So the KKK has a right to TORTURE and KILL black people right? These 2 issues are not the same! I don’t see thousands if not millions of gay people being hunted and mistreated based on the COLOR OF THEIR SKIN! You can hide a sexual relationship, you CANNOT hide the color of your skin! Smh

  14. Danny Bey January 5, 2017

We’re only 5 days into 2017 and I’m already drained by what’s consuming the headlines. Between Mariah and this, I’m so tired.

  15. xedos January 5, 2017

Gandhi was right ” love your Christ dislike the Christians”

  16. Robert Robinson January 5, 2017

Why are these people upset with those who don’t believe in their lifestyle. Lol They feel guilty and know that what they are doing is wrong. It’s no secret that the Bible speak out against that lifestyle. Whether you be gay, a liar, theif, killer, r*****…All sin…But the gay group is the only one think otherwise and try to get people to accept their lifestyle. If that is what they choose then live your life and stop trying to get people to believe in something some are strongly against.

    • Tori January 5, 2017

Because majority of them are Christian who come from/ live in the church and have been enabled for so long it’s hurts to hear it’s not right. These are the same ppl who were leasing Kim and Pastor Ceasar just in December. But now that both ladies have spoke against their lifestyle, they feel guilty and betrayed and are playing the victim. I mean, call a sin a sin. I don’t see any ppl trying to get America/Churches to recognize murdering ppl or rapping ppl a lifestyle, nor lying & stealing but ppl still live that way and when preachers speak against it the “queens” and “the girls” are amening but not that were talking about homosexuality ppl are coming from everywhere hurt.

    • Chileplease (first and only bih) January 5, 2017

First off, it’s not a LIFESTYLE. People love to discuss the things they have absolutely no understanding or feeling of and if you aren’t gay, bi, trans, etc., then maybe you should just not have an opinion on the situation. I’m tired of straight people thinking that gay people need their acceptance. They don’t. Gay people just want to be treated equally and not ostracized the way they have been for centuries.

Secondly, gay people don’t choose to be gay. That’s an outdated, antiquated way of thinking and if you do think that way, then when did you choose to be straight? (if you really are).

      • XoMoDe January 5, 2017

“I’m tired of straight people thinking that gay people need their acceptance.”

        ——

I’m tired of gay people acting like straight people owe them their acceptance, or respect. No one has to like you.

      • Terry January 5, 2017

Ostracized? NOOOOOBODY HAS TO LIKE YOU! And the same goes for the Christian community! Some people have never stepped foot in a church or read the Bible ( meaning actually devoted your life to studying it!)

Christians use the Bible as a guide. It teaches about the natural order of life! Man and woman…. I mean none of us would be on this earth if not for that. So that’s a fact. Anything beyond that is unatural and everyone does not have to like or agree with it!

But this doesn’t mean we get to mistreat PEOPLE who happend to like the same s**. The only thing wrong with Kim’s message was the way she did it. Some things were just harsh.

Yet I do not expect anyone not a part of the Christian life to get it and THATS OK

  17. Tori January 5, 2017

Gay ppl are so irritating, I love them but b****** you knew what this was when decided to live this life style publicly. MOVE ON. And the church is going about this ENTIRELY WRONG, if you want to save someone from the spirit of homosexuality, preach to them, DONT condemn them and kill them because then you run ppl off and create an awkward space. Homosexuality isn’t a natural way of life but if that’s the path a person wants to take, b**** does that fall on you or them? And the ppl on Twitter “dragging” Pastor Ceasar WILL reap what they showed, you never speak against a pastor no matter how you feel. They are the same ppl posting p*** and their unwanted b******* homemade s** videos up and down social media but wonder why some ppl live in disgust of them. Some gays make the entire LGBT community look bad. The world don’t treat gays equal for obvious reasons but once the church decided to say something it’s a problem because that’s where most of them are. If the church, of every nationality, would’ve remained strong on the word this problem wouldn’t be. But they embraced them in the wrong way. Instead of praying for them and teaching them they enabled them and told them it was okay to be gay and now they want to condemn them all. Kim & Pastor Ceasar as well because 9/10 their glam squad is majority gay men.

  18. B_Roni January 5, 2017

As a gay black male, I will honestly say this is why I keep to myself gay people as well as those that are straight are sometimes foolish. As some e stated above, what do you expect? You think these folks gonna stop believing in what they believe in. That’s like telling someone who believes in another god to stop. :It’s their religion. This has been going on for years. You might as well stop listening to these folks and gospel. Cause majority of black Christian gospel diners feel as both of these two feel. Everyone acting like this is something new. Just stop listening to or supporting those artist if you feel that way. Jeez it’s that simple. Twitter attacks will solve nothing. Black christians esoecually are like azalea banks when it comes to their religion. They not letting it go.

  19. RCR81 January 5, 2017

We get it – These two women hate gay people and think we are perverse.
That’s their opinion and they are entitled to it. People have accepted homosexuality and this is a step forward, however not everyone agrees with it which is their prerogative and acceptable to most people.
Acceptance and agreement are two different things.
What I cannot stand though, is the fact that these two women have spat out some particularly poisonous words and abuse towards the gay community, trying to force their negative opinions upon others and they should be more responsible in making their views public.
Also, the Gay community should not be fighting back by attacking all Christians – This is equally as disrespectful! Not all Christians hold the same beliefs and I for one have plenty of Christian friends who do not have a problem with it.

  20. Kmilan23 January 5, 2017

Wtf Shirley Timple say? No the problem is you church folk preach against us so loosely tearing us LBGT communities down old h**, y’all church folks mad now that we have a bigger voice then back then, you church people wonder why not everyone goes to church, your just as “sinful@ then we supposedly are

  21. Justafan January 5, 2017

    Ms Caesar…you are exhausting.

  22. Confised January 5, 2017

So, my big question is why are these women even preaching in Church? According to multiple passages in the bible, it is sin:

1 Corinthians 14:34 – The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.

1 Timothy 2:12 – I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

Now, while I certainly do not agree with this, I feel it is worth pointing out.

Maybe it is a demon that is possessing them to violate biblical law like this? Or is it just simple hypocrisy?

    It is all so confusing!

    • therealist January 5, 2017

DEBORAH – Judges 4:4-5. Deborah was a Judge for both civil and criminal cases. The children of Israel came to her for judgment. She was the chief ruler of Israel for 40 years, giving orders to the Generals and all the army. She did the work of an evangelist, prophetess, Judge, and a preacher. God gave her authority over the mighty (Judges 5:13).

Mark 16:15, “Preach the Gospel,” is to ALL believers, and to all the church of Jesus Christ. The command to “preach the Gospel” is to both male and female.

Acts 10:34 – “God is no respecter of persons

Women preachers are a fulfillment of Bible Prophecy and another sign of Christ’s soon return to earth (Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17-18).

The Bible declares that women will prophesy: 1 Cor. 11:5, “For every woman that prayeth or prophesieth….”

God did not say that women couldn’t preach his word!!!!!!!!!!! You need to do more research!!!!

Those are receipts, and if you need more, I have more!!!!!

    • Jasmine January 5, 2017

It is not confusing. You purposely did not quote the numerous bible verses regarding the immorality and consequences of homosexuality. Why would someone else’s words affect you in the first place. Be strong and go brush it off.

  23. Thando January 5, 2017

The election of the racist, sexist and alleged r***** Trump has galvanized the fascist anti-gay vitriol of the Black church. Their getting more and more brave in flaunting their hatred. People always pop a vessel when you tell them that there is a massive anti-gay culture within Black people. Black people are top 3 of the most anti-gay, homophobic, intolerant, ignorant groups there are. They embellish their bigotry with their equally problematic religion. Religion is anti-human. The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species. Until you/we attack/have debate about the culture of glorifying ant-LGBTI culture among Blacks, this will never change.

  24. Thando January 5, 2017

Any person who takes moral instruction from the bible is an idiotic fool who doesn’t deserve a sympathetic audience but the harshest and most hostile criticism. I am convinced that religion is only for those who lack intellectual independence. The most stupid people I know are people who cite this rubbish book as a source of how to live life. Religion has enjoyed a pass for far too long. The genesis of ALL hatred is religion and all its paraphanalia.

  25. Linear January 5, 2017

It’s like this, if you try to TELL me what to think or police my language, them I’m going to double down on my opinion. You don’t influence my level of acceptance or even tolerance by trying to take me to task. That just inflames my original attitude. Now whatever I said that pissed you off before, I’m gonna say more. Gays don’t want equality; what they want is special treatment and total surrender. I’m not doing it.

    • Robert Robinson January 5, 2017

      Someone with sense speaking!

  26. Lerone Baker January 7, 2017

Hello world my name is Lerone Baker. I’m here to tell you do not pay Shirley Caesar any attention. She is only doing this to get some more attention and to stay alive in the music industry. Shirley Caesar is a Lesbian herself and is only doing this to make it look like she isn’t a Lesbian. If you look back over her career she has used several gay “GOSPEL SINGERS” to stay alive in the industry. Tonex/B Slade Who came out and told the world he was gay, O’landa Draper Who Died Of A***/H**, Kirk Carr, So called X gay Donnie McClurkin, Donald Lawerence, Bobby Jones and I can give about 20 more she has recorded with or sang with on stage with knowing they were gay. Shirley Caesar is a SOLD-OUT old church Lesbian she use to record with my Late Aunt Cassietta Baker George in The Caravans. I know this woman and “SHE AIN’T NO GOOD.” Shirley you need to sit you behind down and stop trying to “USE THE MEDIA” you have “NO RIGHT TO GET UP AND SPEAK OVER PEOPLE LIVES” you have no “HEAVEN OR HELL” to put anyone in. Last you are a Lesbian yourself. You were caught down on your knees in a “HOTEL ROOM PERFORMING ORAL ON ANOTHER WOMAN.” You are a hypocrite, you, Kim Burrell with her no dressing behind. You “BLACK Church HYPOCRITES” know me I don’t play and I will expose all you “FAKE BLASPHEMY CROOKS.” Once again if I see or here of anything like this again “I’M GOING TO CONTACT THE HEAD OF THE “LGBT community” AND EXPOSE ALL OF YOU PASTORS, EVANGELIST, AND GOSPEL SINGERS WHO ARE LIVING A CLOSET LIFE STYLE AND UP USING “GODS NAME AS A COVER.” I AM SICK OF YOU ‘BLACK CHURCH HYPOCRITES.” DON’T YOU PLAY WITH MR. LERONE BAKER.
