Watch: Christina Aguilera Soars With ‘Stormy Weather’ On ‘Take The Stage’

Christina Aguilera has been the subject of murmurs of late thanks to rumors that she’s left her longtime label and moved to Universal.

While there’s no official word yet on that, what is for sure is that Xtina rocked the stage when performing on an ABC special last night.

‘Taking The Stage: African American Music And Stories That Changed America’ was filmed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; the showcase featured music, dance and dramatic readings by a wide range of talent – such as Aguilera.

She took on ‘Stormy Weather’ by Ethel Waters and her powerful performance awaits below…

Say what folk will about Xtina, she still possesses much of the voice and skill-set that made her a household name.

Now, if only she’d leverage that towards new music.

If indeed Aguilera has switched labels it’d explain the border-line crazy delay in releasing the follow-up to ‘Lotus’ (which turns 5, yes 5, this year).

Because, as much as we value the artistic “process,” we have quite literally seen (over and over) how lengthy gaps between poorly performing projects and their successors rarely fares well for the latter.

We wish her the best.

In any case…

Yass! Queen, now gimme that new album.
Off topic: Bionic is so phucking underrated. It’s so phaggotty, and I liiiiive for it.
    Christina, bless me again.

    • LISA LEVINE January 13, 2017

Good Morning Goats. She sounds harsh. Her lower tones are cute but the Highs sound strained. Her voice sounds like a great aged voice. No shade

    • Lmfao_Hoe January 13, 2017

S** for Breakfast is my s*** off that album along with a few other tracks too.

      • LISA LEVINE January 13, 2017

S_EX FOR BREAKFEST IS HOT, ANOTHER UNRELEASED GEM

Christina can stil saaaaaang BUT she needs some vocal control and to give creative control to management in order to be great again. She has what it takes to be big again. She just needs to come back down to earth and stop living in the world where she thinks she can get by just because of her raw talent.

    • Legendtina January 13, 2017

Tbh I think that because she can get by on raw talent it has made her complacent. She never rushes music but she seems especially in no hurry. It’s not hard to see why, she was collecting massive checks from The Voice and got paid millions for single performances over the last 2 years.

  3. Weezy Tha Goat/Zayn is ? January 13, 2017

Christina’s career wasn’t supposed to end so quick. I think her attitude over shadowed her tremendous talent.

    • mr.m January 13, 2017

And you stan for a one hit wonder, 3 months career twink who can’t even hold a mic and perform live?
      hmmm…

    • LISA LEVINE January 13, 2017

Honey, i’ve met Christina Aguilera. She has an attitude problem. Stank at best. Is it little woman syndrome or just is she a d*****. The voice behind Loving Me 4 me, soar, walk about, Beautiful does not sell records because her team can’t stand her and neither can her label. ATTITUDE adjustment, you are not Aretha Franklin boo.

      • mr.m January 13, 2017

        lol you’re just dump af.
she had a worse attitude during her stripped/b2b eras and those were her BEST eras.
Mariah has an attitude, Madonna, Rihanna …. and they all sell +++ millions of records. ITS ALL ABOUT EGO, FIRE, POWER AND PROMOTION. bye h**.

      • Christian January 14, 2017

Honey, I met Xtina back in 2010 and she was absolutely nice and kind to me and my friends…Those attitude rumours are so 2002, so move on..

  4. mr.m January 13, 2017

    THE VOICE OF OUR GENERATION.
this tone, soul, richness, and power are irreplaceable!
+ Her low register is PURE GOLD
Wish she could record a full low key deep song <3

  5. Legendtina January 13, 2017

Did I hear a sustained D5 in that performance? Christina’s voice has honestly gotten better with age in my opinion. The Golden Pipes are still intact and have gotten a darker timbre over the years. She did that, and brought the house down! Standing ovation for a true talent!

As for leaving RCA, it’s about time. Lotus’ rollout was messy and Christina doesn’t seem to be a priority on the label. RCA as a whole seems capable of pushing one act at a time. Shame, it use to be such a strong label. But Christina definitely needs a new one and I hope the jump to Universal is what is needed to get that album rolled out. I don’t care how it sells, I want an album and tour. This has been her longest hiatus and a few collaborations and performances here and there aren’t cutting it.

  6. RCW January 13, 2017

    No ma’am! This isn’t 2002…I need her to get a vocal coach…she hasn’t grown vocally at all…smh

  7. Beyonnaise January 13, 2017

    When will lipsyncé?

    • mr.m January 13, 2017

      lmao!!
      never.

      • BEY>RIH January 13, 2017

Bey would never sound as vocally strained as XXLtina…

  8. Coolness January 13, 2017

Okay, I will always appreciate Christina for giving me bops during the first seven years of her career (Genie in a Bottle – Back to Basics). However, I wasn’t so impressed with her vocal performance last night. She has a beautiful tone and with the way it’s darkened with age, she sounds more like a classic singer these days. She always goes overboard with the runs that have very little musicality to them. And in typical Xtina fashion, she ended the performance with a strained (and flat) belt.

    • Jason January 13, 2017

      Complete truth!!!

  9. RhiRocks January 13, 2017

Christina can’t compete with the girls right now cos she’ hasn’t really gained any new fans and her old fans just aren’t buying her music . And she for sure can’t compete with Beyoncé the only 90s star to still be relevant . She wants to do a collob with bey which she’s mentioned 100x but bey pays her dust probably cos of her attitude

  10. Sam January 13, 2017

True and raw talent, no autotune or pre-recorded vocals or backing track, ok so every note is not perfect but she’s a class act. Hardly anyone in the industry today can delivery a live vocal like that. Hope she delivers an amazing album.

  11. RCR81 January 13, 2017

This was a great performance and you can’t really fault Christina vocally but I think the days of her having a hit record are long gone. I get that creativity takes time, but she needs to stay relevant and think she is struggling to achieve relevancy at the moment.
Like others have said, she provided some quality bops back in the day, but that isn’t enough to keep her at the top and she needs people to buy her music at the end of the day.
I’m personally not here for it – I gave up after ‘Stripped’

  12. Haters Gon’ Hate January 13, 2017

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I love Christina but it’s her old material that has me anticipating what she’s gonna delive next. Vocally this performance just good but I wouldn’t want to listen to an hour of that if she say – did a live acoustic set – her voice is almost alittle too raw and unrefined to listen to live for an extended period. Sure – I know this was they key she chose for the song – but the belting and rawness just was just not it for me.

  13. Jason January 13, 2017

Ugh.. She’s so extra! What was that at the end? What she thinks is vocal flexing, only shows the damage that’s been done to her voice. Another singer who should focus on what’s left instead of thinking the voice is still in it’s prime. (Mariah, can you hear me?!) Someone get these girls a nice voice lesson.

    • JOHNVIDAL January 13, 2017

Mariah is way wiser vocally. Has always been.

      • mr.m January 13, 2017

        wiser my ass
thats she lipsync all her high notes since 2005?
Xtina sh!ts all over her. truth. sorry.

      • JOHNVIDAL January 13, 2017

Boy, Mariah control of her voice is one of the most unique treasures pop music has seen. What are you talking about? Xtina didn´t have control not even at her vocal peak. let´s not compare cause… I only said “wiser”. That´s all. Let´s just say their musicianship are just on different levels 🙂

  14. Kim.Kesha&Pam January 13, 2017

    Xtina sounded AMAZING! Period.

  15. XtinaChange January 13, 2017

Most people don’t understand, Christina doesn’t care about the fame, popularity or #1 hits…she’s been there, done that. That’s why she avoids most award shows and rarely post on social media. Her focus is her family. I’m sure the album will be a masterpiece. She’s truly a perfectionist and sometimes it doesn’t work in her favor. I hope and pray she receives the love she deserves once she drops this new music. She’s not Beyonce or Adele but she should be selling albums like them. The demand is there, the sales aren’t!

    • RCR81 January 13, 2017

      Everyone wants a #1 – don’t kid yourself.
She has talent but is no where even close to Adele.

      • mr.m January 13, 2017

        lol really?
I swear xtina is more talented than adele
adele is just more likable n got lucky
        she is sooo damn basic
xtina shiits on her vocally and musically.
If xtina wanted to be like adele, she would’ve kept her image from her debut album. clean soft classy mainstream songs and ballads. she could’ve been like celine dion. but she’s real n risky! she is experimental and don’t want to be put in a box. deal.

      • JOHNVIDAL January 13, 2017

Xtina like Celine Dion? In what world? She could have not. Her belting… just no. The peak of her career could have lasted longer than it did. But that´s all. Her voice doesn´t fit the Celine type of career.
Also, adele is a fantastic songwriter. To me her last album was adisappointing but I´m not going to deny her absolutel classics with universal appeal she wrote and sung for “21” or how great “19” was. xtina is too often all over the place, vocally and also artistically. She´s great, but overall someone liek Adele has ended becoming bigger for a reason. Nobody since Dion, Mariah and Whitney have had that type of universal appeal (that type of monumental appeal). Not xtina, not anyone. Except Adele. I don´t think she´s the greatest or anything. But let´s not undermine her talent.

      • Legendtina January 13, 2017

Adele has success because her tone is enjoyable and she sticks to the same formula. She does not have the range or artistrty to compete with Christina. Christina wrote gems on Bionic, Back to Basics, and Stripped that Adele could never write. While you say she’s “all over the place”, I see it as a diverse pop star. And that’s the point: Christina is a pop star. Reinvention comes with the territory. Adele and Celine aren’t pop stars. Sticking to the same style every album works for them. But Adele could never see Christina’s level of artistry and creativity or possess her range.

      • JOHNVIDAL January 14, 2017

And who told you the artist that has the wider range in their voice is the best artist? You said it yourself, Adele´s tone is very enjoyable (I´ll tell you what it really is: extremely beautiful, and with THAT universal appeal). Xtina´s reinventions and artistry have been too all over the place, it´s not like she has been showing Madonna´s stunning evolutions. How many albums has Xtina released in 15 years? 4? I don´t know what to think about her artistry to be honest. I appreciate her. But Adele´s few universal classics is something that Xtina has never been able to write (not to mention I truly think Adele is more of a songwriter than Xtina, but anyway). I respect Xtina and was one of the few defending her here in this blog a few years ago when 98% just moked her for the sake of it, so in a way, all this convo is pointless 🙂 Cheers!

  16. Cough Cough January 13, 2017

Way too many runs that didn’t go together, way too many of the exact same runs she does on every song she sings, lots of straining and as usual trying to pretend she’s still a soprano when she is CLEARLY an alto. She’s struggling throughout the whole performance but she does have moments that she sounds good in the beginning. She needs to accept her lower range or else she will end up like Mariah.

  17. AmbeRussell January 13, 2017

I was reading yesterday that she signed to a new label. This might be the reason why it is taking her so long to release. She just signed it this past Dex, so she is going to holding out for a little while. Hopefully they will give her more support and treat her like a major pop act and not like a a leftover throw away singer.

  18. Chad January 13, 2017

I commented earlier and i need to clarify abit. I am a huge xtina fan. I am however realistic. She is beautiful and has an amazing voice. She however does not have a look or a sound and that will remain her downfall. If she doesn’t care for fame and success anymore then retire. but half assed efforts are not accepted. her only hope is to release an amazing album, promote the s*** out of it as she is not relevent anymore and focus on ballads and not club bangers. Go big or go home. We as stans of artists need to be real. Never accept mediocrity, no matter who the fave is.

    • AmbeRussell January 13, 2017

I will have to agree that her downfall is the lack of sound. She went to far left with eachbalbum w/o any in between the switch as far as sound
Britney changed her sound and image, but it was gradual. Black out had an urban sound, but in the zone was the lighter version of it, with rnb influence and producers to give her a pop and urban sounds.so we go to blackout, it isn’t scary to fans. B2b was too different to stripped which is different to bionic and lotus was just too much like the debut, but not in a good way.

I feel like she can do more than just ballads though. Ibwantbfun music from her, but a signature song. But she should have focused on her voice so she could have lived up to her Voice of the Generation title

  19. Theman January 13, 2017

Mariah belts higher & clearer. Mariah has been singing very well recently. Y’all sound stupid. Christina’s voice is there. A few lil adjustments will do wonders for her though..

  20. Chile Please!!! January 13, 2017

I love Christina….but there’s such thing as “Over singing” & she does it alot! Just because you can do the vocal acrobatics, you don’t have to do it through out the whole song. The other women that performed kept it cute, simple, but yet POWERFUL! She still my girl tho!

    • M January 13, 2017

I love christina too and always will but she definitely oversang a bit too much here. I didnt really understand what she was singing.

  21. Justifiedhot January 13, 2017

Just wow, I really hope Christina drops a whole new album this year, a legend like her in her prime, with that amazing voice, should be out touring. The sound would rock if it was a nod to back to basics or even her s*** image from stripped, or even a new image, which sets the bar for other artists like she has before. Would love her to duet with Mariah or Leona Lewis on a ballad. I saw her live 2006, one of the best voices I have ever heard. I was disappointed with the artwork and imaging around Lotus I think the label didn’t really let her shine.

  22. pat January 13, 2017

She definitely can still sing! Her choices and placements are just never completely right.

  23. joejoe January 14, 2017

There’s a reason why she’s called the Voice of this Generation. She may not be a hit maker these days but she will f*** Beyonce up vocally. Only thing Xtina does is strain her voice sometimes but as we all saw in the beginning of this performance she doesn’t have to if she doesn’t want to. She can be crisp and clean until she decides to do too much.

  25. GEEZUS January 17, 2017

If she goes to Universal…… SHE WILL BE A PROBLEM, everybody can say whatever the f*** they want to say about this woman but she is BLESSED by a being too powerful. Her gift is still there. She can still do it all.

S.B. Bionic was one of the first CD’s I brought ever in 2010..
